StarCraft on Android! - G1 Apps and Games

Apparently somebody has been working on porting Starcraft to android right underneath our noses! Click Here! for screenshots.
This could be interesting.

Is it really that hard to write the word "starcraft" in the searchbox ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509691

I didn't see it down there; my bad. Is it really that hard to be polite?

well i can't wait until it gets done. i would never put my phone down again when it is lol

omgg this would be amazing when its completed! Id be willing to help, but im not a developer or anything lol

If we could get Starcraft on the G1 that would be amazing. And if thats possible it should be possible to port Diablo to the G1. Now THAT would be awesome.

Hmmm how is this legal? AFAIK, starcraft isn't open source and blizzard still owns the copyright

Someone was actually working on a hombrew version of Starcraft for the DS. Im glad someone is actually making one for the G1!!!

Its called a clean room reverse engineer, which is totally legal. As long as the dev. has no inside knowledge, if he codes the engine to be compatible, then it is legal (code wise).
However, he also would have to change names/text, and also regenerate all the image/music/etc content (as those are also most likely copy writted).
Now, in the end, the question really is will Blizzard care if he reuses names/graphics, and the answer is, probably not, provided he does not try to charge for it.

Right, but so far from looking at it all the graphics and everything look the same and he's currently calling it starcraft. Also I wouldn't be so sure about them not caring, if this picks up any kind of speed at all(which I think we all know it would if released to the public) Blizzard would likely shut it down and/or at the very least demand royalties. Even before it reaches release, I've seen major companies like Nintendo demand project be shut down for copyright reasons even though they're just small community projects. At any rate, I'll be interested to see if this makes it to release and will certainly play it if it does.

Well, but Blizzard isn't Nintendo.
And this only runs on Android... and as long as they have no plan for this this is not more than free promotion in my eyes. And luckily blizzard is very user friendly.. we'll see... anyway atm the project is stopped.

Blizzard WILL care. Starcraft is a very active game and blizzard is known for defending their copyrights. Even if they didn't, they are still legally obligated to defend their intellectual property.

You know ... this illustrates a great opportunity that could seize some momentum back to the WM side of the force, should anyone have the wherewithal...
There is huge demand for this and apps like it, however Apple is pulling a "Betamax" and restricting certain types of applications. That is the one big flaw in the App Store paradigm and one that could be exploited to WM's (or other OS') benefit.
It's up to us as advocates to point out this flaw, and up to talented programmer to provide the apps which we could point to and say, hey check it out. WM doesn't have any company deciding what you should and shouldn't be able to run on your device.

This has always been where WM shines... I dont want some hob nobs in Cupertino restricting content I want to see, use. I'm suprised they weren't bold enough to globally start banning "inappropriate" sites from Safari.
Everyone should support the dev of a universal WM marketplace where apps can be compiled and be easily managed.. WM apps are too scattered to find and should be sent through a "cab/beta sweep" to provide some consumer protections.. This market would be an optional portal for apps, not mandatory, but a point system tied to X-Box live could add some spice to luring users to install.

look up gecko. the newest beta just came out theres only like 15 apps at the moment but hes trying to make it just like the appstore is
I do wonder, however, why WM doesn't seem to have the developer base to be proactively coming out with apps like this and others, whereas iPhone is fairly overflowing.

Its all about the hardware... With Iphone its 1 piece of hardware to develop.. WM = hundreds of devices, so programs don't pass the grade for every model.. What would be good would be a marketplace that simply filters the programs based on the device. I hope gecko takes that approach as it expands into a full function platform.

I don't think bumping it up will help the software to get to the Touch Pro any time soon.

A humble request to app developers

Could you please stop putting the word "droid" into the name of your apps? I mean come on! You guys are coming up with the most ingenious idea for the software, and then fall short with naming it. Here's the hard evidence: http://www.cyrket.com/search?q=droid We get it, it's on the Android Market, so it's gotta be for android. So please, for the love of Linus Torvalds, make up an original name!
Hope everyone realizes that this thread is written as joke, and not to be taken seriously. We all appreciate the devs' hard work and dedication to the Android OS and devices it lives on.

Why can't we use droid? lol, seems pretty original to me (in the context of the market). I don't see two transdroids, or mutliple piggybank droids. If it bugs you that much, just don't open the market anymore. lol
I kind of agree. To me its the same as as video games coming out being called Playstation Shooter, XBox Fighter, Nintendo RPG. It tells you what its for and sticks it to the platform. I understand that devs are developing for the Android but there are other platforms, whether you like them or not and especially those apps that are worth some money, it would be nice to see good work spread across the board. Having a name that would fit better on all platforms would be better imo. That or you recreate it with a new name for the new platform but then it becomes less recognizable. Everyone knows what God of War is and when they hear it they think one thing. But who would think Bank of America if they named it Bankpod and Bankdroid?
(just my thoughts so don't go getting all upset about it)
what about the "A"?
I'm still waiting for a golf game named AHole. What about Hemherrdroid? I suppose they could be offered as a package, too.
I'm torn. I lke concise app names, I like them to say what they do, and I guess it's good to know what platform. Can you do all those at once?

will cyanogen ever start making roms for eris?

chances are that he wont make a rom for the eris. i want it too, but the only thing you can do is just wait and see. he probably knows of all the people that want his rom so no use in bugging him, which could cause him to not come here and port it for us.
LOL I was at work and all day I was planning on asking this same question when I got off!!
Probably not, few years ago Google had issued him cease and desist order as result of early release of market app in his ROM before official launch. Ever since that day he was not allowed to included anything that are Google's, e.g. IM, Map, etc... even the driver for GSM itself, in fact he had to write his own driver to work with GSM signal, it's like asking him to do CDMA as well. Only thing we can do is have someone to port his release, using his framework and such and that might just work.
Feel free to ask him to give you his source code so that you can port it over to eris, I'm sure he'll be more than happy to do so.
I don't think he would. Right now he's only releasing N1 and G1/Magic roms because he owns a N1 and I think his wife and friends own G1's. Maybe if someone gave him an Eris then he would start? and I think he recently included the Motorola Droid because someone else ported his rom to it and I guess he continued the dev process, but don't take my word for all that lol. And if anything just ask him on http://twitter.com/cyanogen
By the way, I think this should belong in the General and not the Themes and Apps forum...
It looks like someone contacted him about it looking at his twitter he either needs to get an eris or a dev that has one to work out a port.

look man this Frame is probably in junior high if hes taking the regents like he said a little while back and as of he has created the hands down best Eris rom. Hes a young adult whos running circles around most of us. Hes going to give the rom out for free but if he wants to give some appreciation to the people who have helped support him, so be it.
If in about 200 pages of forum posts on Evil Eris this is only issue you have with him, I think its fair to say were not on the dawn of the Sith empire of greed. I think he probably said something a bit hastily and it shouldn't be blown out of proportion.
Once again Thanks frame for making the best Eris rom. I think i say this for tons of people, we appreciate the work you do and let us know anything we can do to return the favor!

where i like frameworks rom .... i would definitely disagree as to what may or may not be "hands down" the best rom ..... what is the best depends on the users likes, dislikes and needs .....
donations ...I have nothing against them .....
but there are alot of developers here that work just as hard .....
so the only thing that i see is clearly hands down the best....is the Android community and the openness of it which brings alot of choices

CyanogenMOD is a very small light rom that is super fast, looks really nice, has OTA updates, and is just really sleek and slick.
Cool SoCalSpecialist,
Sorry I didnt mean to come off hard, but I didn't want this guy to take heat He works to hard to be putting up with it. And I agree with you "best rom" may not be the right phrase, but I think "rom to beat" in a number of different categories would be a fair thing to say
And a note on the community. The Android community is awesome. I am currently working on getting a CCNA and a MSCE, but as soon as that's done, I would like to come back to Xda and get more involved as a developer Everyone here who develops is inspiring to those of us in IT with ****ty jobs Reading this forum helps me keep my sanity while getting support calls from people who don't know how to re-size windows.
Thanks again Frame and everyone else who is part of XDA!

Android. The theif.

Doesn't anyone find it odd that we are paying out huge sums of cash for a Linux based OS that is free to use?
Because the cost of the handset doesn't factor into it at all :face palms:
I mean they handed us a broken toy and we fixed it for them with no pay and they sold it back to us as an update, now we are fixing it up more. Hopefully when Android 114.6 rolls out some devs. will for a union of some kind and make some cash from big business instead of settling for the 2.99 that their brothers and sisters are downloading.

But who is it that decides the devs have been screwed. Is it you? I think that honor goes to each individual who bought the phone. You don't get to determine that someone else has been screwed just because your panties are in a bunch over something related to your phone.
The cost of a non open source operating system on a phone is going to be so heavily subsidized, I'd be surprised if the additional cost was more than a couple of dollars/pounds/whatever. Bottom line is that you're just paying for the device whichever route you take.
Also consider how long android has been out, it is definitely the quickest maturing mobile platform around. Anyone remember the state wm was in at this age?
Edit: I think the developers would rather be "screwed" as you put it in order to bring about progress in a timely manner. That's what open source is all about!

First off, that's a toaster I want.
Second off, you're absolutely right. It's not about the money, it's about taking your phone to the next level and being able to say you were the one who got it there first. I and thousands of others have nothing but respect for these developers and a lot of us give them both props and donations for their work. I'm sure the donations are nice, but I doubt there are many devs on XDA who started writing ROMs and compiling kernels because they thought it would make them rich.
Don't understate the motivational power of random people coming into your thread to say "Your work is awesome, keep it up, and how cool would it be if it did this too?" For some people the respect is all they need, since genuine respect can't be bought, it can only be earned.

[Q] Is there a world building app for the Xoom?

I was wondering if anyone is aware of any World Building Apps for the Xoom. Preferably one that I could sync with an application on my PC, but it isn't required.
My specific use would be for creating a world for a story I am writing. Although I could think of a few other uses as well
@Mythico: I know it may be obvious to you, but most of us have no idea what game/system you are talking about.
World builder as in Minecraft I guess.

I am actually not refering to any game/system. I am looking for a generic world builder. I am writing a story for a book and would like to find some tool to assist/layout the world I am creating.
If there isn't a generic one then I am fine using that is designed for a specific game even though I have no intentions of using it for said game. It doesn't need to be to detailed. I am more using it for a rough sketch/reference point.
Do you have an example of the type of software you're referring to on another platform?
First thing I thought when I saw the title was how much I want SimCity on this tablet.

Unfortunatly I don't have any example as I have had troubles finding something for my PC/Mac. I mean I could technicially could use paint, but would prefer something a tad more complex then that
It doesn't need to show elevations or be 3d or anything like that. Although if it is something complex it is welcomed. I just want something to be able to tell this is where a house, castle, mountains,or forest is. So that I try and rough idea of the layout of the world. That and so I don't send a character into a forest that doesn't exist.

I've never heard or seen of such a thing, and as a prolific amature writer, I've never considered the need for such a thing either. I either visualise my fictional world in my head, or I make notes.
Try pen and paper. Sometimes, technology gets in the way, y'know?
minecraft is supposed to be coming to android soonish.

I have thought about that but would seem quite tedious to use for that purpose

It is what I do now. I normally just make a mental note or if need be a physical note somewhere. It just got me wondering if there was an application that could allow you to layout everything. Sounds like I may be stuck the old fashion way. Plus as you said sometimes it can get in the way hehe
You want THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE to give you that tip mate.
here we're only geeks we can probably point you to a landscape of silicon and sodering iron, perhaps a mountain of T5 screws and T6 Pine trees, clouds full of mp3's... just sayin.
what tha **** is this guy talking about?! First we figured one out in Sim City now he says thats wrong because he is writing a book but doesn't know how to because he can't write it with a world app, that both doesn't exist on Android or PC/Mac.
Here's a hint, you want to create a world that you can't write with a paper n pen take up drugs. Closest thing to you making sense.

What is with all the hate seriously. First I didn't say I couldn't write it with pen/paper. I am just looking a tool to assist and help when needing a quick visual reference. I will just stick to pen and paper, was just curious if such an app existed on the android market.
Everyone Else - Thanks for the help guys. It looks like good ol' Pen and Paper for me. Its been working so far, so why fix it if it isn't broken right?
I heard you can get epic mounts at level 40 in World of Warcraft now, is this true?
