Good day all,
OK Can someone explain the benefits of 6.5 over 6.1? is it more stable? does it run faster? I am currently using PROven's ROM with 6.1. I love it. I am not a big fan of the look of 6.5 and would probably want to run it with Rhodiums TF3D on it. Is it worth upgrading if you dont really want the different interface?
Thanks in advance for any advice. I also apologize if this is somewhere (I am sure it has been discussed) and I just have not found/overlooked it.
Regards,
SoBBie
PS One last question... I noticed in a few ROMs that they are windows mobile 6.5 with both types of interfaces (the list of items and Rhoduims TF3D). Can someone explain to me how it can use both? would you have to turn off TF3D? is TF3D just one item in the list?
There are lots of benefits. One being that Windows Mobile 6.5 is now natively supports finger friendly swipes and gestures which are A LOT better then the TouchFlo gesture. Now you can swipe left/right to move through tabs, and everything is more finger friendly.
An example of this is the new Homescreen and the new Start menu. Many of the default apps have been rewritten to utilize the new finger gestures.
Also the menu systems have been updated to give bigger finger friendly areas to click on.
And it is pretty fast... really fast actually. Alot of the new OS uses transparencies and fade-in animations that really require a solid 2D performance from the graphics driver. I've found really good frame rates in games because of this.
It is heavily customizable too. All of the graphics are easily changeable. There are already a lot of creative skins coming out for WM6.5.
Overall it feels similar to WM6.1 but there are a lot of new toys to play with. The new native finger scrolling is fantastic and very "iphone" like. Once you play with Wm6.5 you'll never go back.
You can run all of your custom homescreens and such if you want... but I really like the default WM6.5 homescreen. Your question about running both the default homescreen and TF3D... I believe the answer is TF3D Detacher or using "Second Today". Using both would be overkill, since both do the exact same function (Weather, Shortcuts, Time, Pictures, Music, Calendar, Settings, etc).
There are some awesome themes though... I wouldn't jump to TF3D too fast. Check this theme out. It's what I'm currently using and it's awesome.

Not true of everyone. Personally I prefer 6.1 start menu and have not been able to find a way of changing the 6.5 one. To me 6.5 is nothing but a bunch of useless eye candy that's not worth the memory and battery drain. Even with disabling chrome and TF3D running nothing but a blank start screen battery still drains quicker. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
Best way to find out is to try it yourself and see which one you prefer
OK First let me say thank you for the quick response. I do see that TF3d and winmo6.5 have the same functions. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that view just Titanium? Doesnt that act like TF3D? cant that just be disabled and allow me to use TF3D on it. I personally like the TF3D interface better. I like to be able to see a few appointments along with the time and notifications. From what I have seen I would have ot tap on the cal to view any appointments... otherwise I would just see the word Calendar.... not very useful to me.
So I should ask this question, can we get windows mobile 6.5 with ONLY TF3d? and if you take away the "Titanium" (to me that is a today screen) what are the benefits of 6.5?
I hope that makes sense.
Thanks again for your response,

Yes I know trying is probably the best way. I, like you, do not like the layout of 6.5. to me it doesn't show me the information that I want and I dont know if it would (until I try of course). I was hoping that I could get 6.5 explained more and my first post didn't word it correctly. As mentioned above I was hoping that titanium was just a today screen (like TF3D) which could be turned off. If it is not (which is what it sounds like) then I will most likely stick with 6.1.
Thanks again for your advice.

I absolutely agree with wshader here. I spent a couple days with 6.5 and could not get over not having my old start menu, recent programs list, etc. It took more work to do the things that I used to do with ease. It definitely was pretty though.
The main benefits for me is the gesture improvements over touchflo. Touchflo just stinks in comparison..
I don't use TF3d or the new wm65 menus - spb mobile shell it's my primary shell, and all I need on here.. give it a try if you haven't..

I know everybody else didn't answer your question, so I will . Yes, you can enable TF3D to be the only home screen running, and "Titanium" is able to be shut off. You can put any home screen you want.
Hope that answers your question!

the above post is very *right* and very wrong at the same time...
1. the start menu is different and can take some getting used to, but it IS customizable
2. this dude either had a bad flash or is lying about memory and battery usage.....BOTH ARE GREATLY IMPROVED IN 6.5.
3. the best thing you can do it to flash a 6.5 rom yourself and try it out...
i personally love 6.5 and will not be going back to 6.1. the benefits far outweigh the flaws. i will note, that 6.5 does have one major flaw that noone else seemed to mention....
all roms that i have tried thus far have a "corrupt ringtone" issue, which will cause WMA files set for text msg notification/ringer to simply not play sometimes....i've missed many a text because of this.....a simple solution is to make your own mp3 ringers.

Interesting, I noticed the same thing with my .wav ringtone. Must be the same issue. Good to know.
Back on topic - I agree with yerp, 6.5 is a keeper. No battery drain or memory consumption issues. Keep in mind everything is relative because of the number of custom roms and personal touches associated with each rom. Some battery drains and memory leaks are rom specific and not related to 6.5. Also, some programs just create havoc and have nothing to do with the rom. You need to test and stick with what works best. I have certain chefs I stick with, test others occasionally, but usually go back to the chefs I have had the best luck with.
I would agree to suppersobbie,
I love the classic WinMo today screen. It gives me a lot of information, ie: data traffic, appointment(s), and many more. It all completely basic, but necessary!
I have seen the Titanium Red Flaming theme, I forgot what it is, but it made me wanted to flash my rom.
I own HTC TouchPro, WWE rom, if I managed to flash my original TP, where can I download my original rom in case I want to reflashed it back to WM6.1?
I bought my TP in WM Store, it's official partner of Microsoft. the ROM is quite stable and everything work fine. Even it pre-installed with working youtube application,,, I will definitely missed this great rom if I flashed it.
I tried to google for this rom I had,,, but zilch,,, nothing shows up,,,
oh here, I found the kickass theme that made me to flash my TP, it called crimson darkness,,, haha it's not even flamming,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=506925
seriously I want this on my phone,,,
OK first let me say thank you to everyone that has responded... And yes I was looking to know if there are improvements overall, which from a few people they say yes. It is also good to know the ringtone issue which I am sure would get annoying.
From what I can tell I will probably start to weed through the 6.5 ROMs and give it a try. I may even try to "cook" my first rom because they are never build exactly the way you want them. But if it improves TF3D performance (guestures) and I can use TF3D and not use Titanium I will give it a try. Who knows I may even try the titanium for a little while and see if I like it.
I did try spb Mobile shell 3 and found I did not like it... I posted my response to MS3 somewhere but it was not what I was looking for and was not as impressed with it as many were (Oh and I was a HUGE MS2 fan, with Greatbal's touchflow theme ) The thing that I did like about MS3 was the response... it was very very responsive which I did like.
Well I do appreciate everyones response and thanks again for ALL the great feedback.

hah, me too,,, I dislike SPB MS 3.0 because it drains my fone battery for only about 16 hours,,, gawd,,, and I use my fone mainly for native MS pushmail, RSS download, and personal secretary,,,
I have found my original ROM, someone dumped it, surething that google is useful, and it will be more useful if you enter the correct stuff you want to find
Get ready to flash my TP,,,

by the way ENERGYROM 3.0 looks very good, comes with TF3D and no titanium, packed with tools, but if You want to try titatium then You have to look to other roms.
Bottom line for me is it IS faster in my opinion that 6.1 and the battery is MUCH better.

Hummmm Energies ROM removed Titanium.... interesting.... Well I just flashed RRE ROM with manila (didn't realize it was not TF3D2 Rhodium but installing that now). Yea I played with Titanium for about 10 minutes this morning... NOT impressed at all. There is no info on the screen. to me it is kinda lame. I am sure you can configure it and play with it to make it a little better but TF3D2 works for me.
I will see how the Rhodium installs on RRE Rom and if I like it I may shoot over and try Energy's ROM. I have read that Energies ROM is a "Ferrari" and it eats up battery so not sure I would want that. even if the performance is better it would have to be significantly better for me to stick with it.
Thanks again all....

Here's my 2cents.
I liked the Touchflo3d, including the Rhodium etc. I kept loading it on my roms. I made cabs to fix annoyances etc. Customized stuff etc. Bottom line is TF3d is another wow app that fails at organizing my stuff. I wanted all the appts etc, easier way to customize my inportant info. But in the end it drained my battery, froze up, if I disabled it, everything ran faster plus freed a ton of memory. File explorer worked 100 times faster since I didn't have 5000 added files to my windows folder and the list can go on.
CHome displays my today stuff much nicer than 6.1 did. With a few add on's, I easily and light on files/memory now have
Pictures
Music
Phone
Voicemail
Favorite People
Weather
Time/Date
Text
EMail
Calendar w/appts etc.
IE w/favorites
Windows Live
And more comes out daily for widgets for your own needs.
It works super fast, no crashing, low memory, looks great with your own backgrounds etc.
In the end, I dropped TF3d and I'll never ever go back. I've since deleted all the cab fixes and stuff in the kitchen to install or waste my time with TF3d.
Just my 2cents. Good luck in whatever you decide on.
Did I mention that with the latest release 21222 so far, it is the fastest OS on any HTC i've ever owned & by far the absolute most stable. IMHO
supersobbie-
Cooking your ROM is probably the best thing you can do, it'll be faster than alot of the cooks ROMs. Like I said before, PM me, IM me, whatever, I'd love to help you cook your own ROM.
noellenchris was right, 21222 is the best I have tried so far, it's fast, and it is the most stable out of all the builds
Question. I flashed a 6.5 rom the first day I got my phone and tried for about 30 minutes to install opera mini but was unsuccessful. As that was the program I use the most, I went with a 6.1 rom so that I could have a working phone since I didn't have time to test 6.5. So question is are you able to install opera mini on 6.5? If so, I'll give 6.5 a spin again,
Thanks.

I'm not really gettin used to touchflow yet and I'm checking out other options. So... Lets get down to business:
The things that bugs me in touchflow are:
1.the todayscreen not being able to show more calendarevents.
2. the sms screen, the whole layout really
3. The mediaplayer
4. The alarm, every aspect there as well
I know that there are substitute programs for most of these problems BUT as I have to go in and select the appropriate program I fail to see the advantage of Touchflow..
The things I love with Tf3d are its speed and beautiful graphics and they will be soarly missed if I would go with another shell.
Are there any other touchfriendly options?
What are the pros and cons with Spb mobile shell 2.0? Especially regarding these issues!
Yours sinceraly
Adis Hardis
Sorry but I think you're a bit lazy. Why don't you just download a trial of spb mobile shell and see for yourself?
To be fair, I think he wants opinions..
SPB Software always rates highly in my books, I used to use the Shell on my Hermes. My girlfriend used to hate it, as it restricts access to the main features of the phone unless you kill it off.
But I guess if you tweak it to how you want it, then you never need to access the back end of the phone, pretty much like the HTC one I guess.
SMS's are visible (at least the count) on the main screen, and link direct to the pocket outlook folder
Media player - There's non built in, so again it's just a link.
Urm, Alarm again is built in.. Unless you put SPB time on??
Guess its worth a try! There's plenty of support on their forums, and hundreds of themes for it
I'm no expert in these areas but can I install spb without uninstalling? (and loosing all the settings and so forth). Cause thats my main concern!
Lazy or not, thats what forums are there for in my opinion, to get input and help...

Ps
Thank you MikeSel
Yeah you can, there simply 'today' plugins so you can disable one, and enable the other.. Make an informed decision and then dump one if you like.. Or just keep both, and leave one disabled
Have fun, and give me a shout if you get stuck!
Nice, I'm on it, thanks for your help Mike!

i just recently installed SPB mobile on my diamond and i love it a lot more then TF3D. I thought TF3D was great at first, but it a shame it's not configurable even with TF3D advanced config etc installed. Only the very basic functionality is available. It does look very good though and maybe the future could hold great things for it. But for now and the near future SPB mobile is the winner for me
-it's better and more customizable
-it's got lot's of good plugins
-the latest version got guestures like touch flow
-runs smooth as silk
-great animation without slowdowns
-all of the functions are easy accessible
Tried spb 2.1 for a week, but changed back to tf3d.
For my use, tf3d its enough and mobile shell, is atm a bit slower than tf3d and i dont like the default look. And with a better looking vga skin its slower than the first versions of manila, so i stay with tf3d.
Hi everybody, I recently got a Diamond2 and found that the enormous amount of expertise and help available at xda-developers have really helped me enjoy this phone. The phone is not locally supported by any carriers or retailers in Canada so the availability of these forums have been a real help. I've run through most of the issues I've had with the phone (really like the Pro2 Interface better but was way to bulky) but have a few remaining that I haven't been able to find satisfactory answers for, hope you guys will be able to help.
I've downloaded and played around with what seem to be most of the prerequisite softwares: Advanced Config Tool, Klaxon, Changescreen etc. and have also made a couple of registry modifications to enable TF3D rotation and things like that. Here is where I'm getting into a bit of trouble. Although changescreen is a great app I just don't like to install a lot of things on my device and decided to try the regedit. After a soft reset it seemed to work great but was quite slow in switching over to landscape and back. At first I though this was a problem with the g-sensor so I opened up Opera to try it out and found that it was much faster. Obviously it's a lot less graphically intense but I was playing around with a Touch Pro2 before I bought the Diamond2 and it is also significantly faster, with the same processor and everything. I've tried to reduce the sampling time for the g-sensor down from 200ms to 100ms in ACT but that didn't really seem to help. Also I get some really weird lines across the tops of TF3D pages in landscape; in the All Contacts page for example the bar that contains "Search Contacts" will have at least three sets of distorted lines across it at regular intervals across the page. The wallpaper also seems to malfunction as instead of staying as it was, it will stretch across the width of the screen and as a result become extremely distorted. The dialer doesn't go into landscape but that seems to be a common issue. I've downloaded the Rhodium Phone Dialer although I haven't had a chance to install it yet, maybe that will fix the dialer issue.
I do have some app installed that changes the background of all tabs to be the same and this seems to have messed with the transparency of the tab bar and, occasionally the phone will fail to respond to screen swipes that would usually cycle through the tabs without using the tab bar. Maybe this app is also causing the other problems.
The help on these forums has already been a great asset and I was just hoping that I would be able to get some simple fixes for the issues with the landscape thing without having to install more software. Thanks in advance for any help, its all appreciated. Cheers.
PS, rom is 1.39.421.0 (47382) WWE
what you can do to improve things:
1. ditch stock rom and use tess rom
2. install flipit for rotation software - its better than the rest IMO
Thanks for the quick reply
Thanks for the quick reply, sorry I wasn't able to reply right away, got a bit busy at uni.
I was a bit apprehensive about installing a new rom but the one you recommended is amazing. The speed increase alone is unbelievable, doesn't even feel like the same device.
Everything is working great and the rotation is really fast now on everything except TF3D. It almost looks like it attempts to rotate and then fails. The title bars rotate around and then rotate back. I've added the regedit, manually removed and added it back into flip_it, but nothing seems to be working. Aside from that everything else seems perfect. Hope you'll be able to help, and once again, thanks.
oh yeah.. forgot to mention about manila in landscape
go to search and look for At0mAng & Danny_and_2 TF3D2 Tweak cab for topaz
install, and in the list of programs, there is option called Manila Rotate ON.
and thats it, you are all set...
hope this helps

Can I ask where to read and get this rom?
I am also new to Topaz.
Running on stock ROM
been reading around. reading on the various rom threads to decide which to use.
I am looking for something stable, fast (aren't we all?) and 6.1. Still got Manila and hopefully with Titanium built in. Also if possible with ringtones removed.
What would you recommend?
Thanks

Almost there
Thanks for the tip about the tweak program, installed it and followed your directions, manila is now rotating. However, its still incredibly slow; in the range of 3-5 seconds for transition to landscape and then around 1-2 seconds back to portrait. Also, those distortive lines I described earlier are back.
I was hoping for the kind of speed seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPVgN5QuzO4 but I do realize that its a different rom. I've disabled and enabled TF3D and also done a soft reset, but no speed increase. I was thinking it may be a hardware issue but everything else works fine. One thing I have noticed though is that since installing this rom some programs get stuck half rotated and the other half of the screen will display the TF3D home page. Once again, thanks for all the help so far.
P.S. If I disable TF3D the blank today screen will rotate at the same speed as in that video if not faster. Also before when the menus rotated but not TF3D they were rotating at the same fast speed.
yes, I know what you mean.. at this stage, manila rotates pretty slow for me too...
I guess at the moment, we have to live with it... the slow rotation only happens on tf3d2 rite? the rest is ok...
as with hardware issue, I am sure it is not, cause topaz is still relatively new...
btw, Manila 2.1 is around, and manila 2.5 is coming too... so, maybe they would give better performance .
btw, the youtube link is a rom made by Tom Condon, and as you probably know, he is very active in building rom for topaz too... why dont you give him a message, or try his rom...
Tha
sorry double post again..

Glad to know that it wasn't just a one off issue. I'll give his rom a shot, was kind of wary b/c of the comments that said WM 6.5 was slow. Would you be able to direct me to somewhere that I'd be able to download TF3D 2.1 alone without a rom upgrade or anything or maybe even cooked into the TESS rom. Thanks for the incredible quick reply and for all the help so far.

Thanks
Ye, sorry about that didn't quite follow the forum all the way, I guess I'll be waiting. Thanks man.
I know I'm gonna get slammed for even posting this but I'm hoping someone can make a recommendation for me. I've been using rom's from xda-developers for years on various devices and now have a Tilt 2. I guess I'm old fashioned because I prefer the WM5 style today screen (screenshot below) and don't like Sense, Manila, or even the default WM6.5 today screen. I'd love to use the Tilt2 roms but am not seeing any that don't include either of those.
Can somebody please recommend a solid and current rom that uses the WM5 style today screen?
Thanks very much...
Greg
just go into today > items and disable windows default on Titanium or disable toughflo on Manilla builds, you'll be left with the original windows 6.1 today screen which is pretty close to that of WM5.
Then you can install all of those plugin that you had there to make it look identical again.

I can do that but was more looking for a rom that didn't have them there to begin with because they may get loaded even though I'm not showing them on the today screen. That's a lot of overhead if they are loaded. No big deal if I'm wrong, I can certainly disable them that way.
Thanks for the advice...

Are you recommending the Firestorm ROM or one version of it?
You probably can cook your own from the official ROMs. Da_G gives out ROMs without manila, but it does have titanium in it.
I'm by no means an expert, but I would guess that titanium would be more difficult to remove from an OS build, as it comes as part of WinMo. Manila/Sense comes from HTC, so it is probably easier to break off from the base OS. I'm betting that if you disable Titanium as mentioned above, you'll remove whatever overhead there is.
Also, as mentioned above, Da_G's ROM is sans manila... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=577594 ... it appears to be made specifically for the Tilt 2, judging by the title of the thread.
Hi All,
I too am looking you for this, I can assure you I've flashed almost every rom out there... Da_G is indeed a clean one but I hate the new builds with the big buttons at the bottom...
@ Agent_47, is the rom you propose has this as well I suppose...
;(
I still can't understand why you people use and like Manila? It's old UI already ~ 2 years old.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmj-Rv-U-tw
just look at this video, look what you can do with SPB + 6.1 mobile + Xperia. It's 10 times for usefull than any Manila. It's faster, no bugs! No sleep death and etc! I was using Manila for 4 month, and after 2.5 LEO i understood that this idea of interface is dead ( HTC understood it too, that's why the created Sense UI on Android )
i still prefer plain 6.5 (titanium) without manila for it's functionality.
i use manila just to show other people that my x1 can still go further with regards
to customization and eye candy (an overused phrase by the way )
same goes for spb.
what i dont like is too much scrolling and too much flips before you get to touch the app you're actually looking for.
but to each his own
btw, how old is spb?

what i dont like is too much scrolling and too much flips before you get to touch the app you're actually looking for.
but to each his own
btw, how old is spb?

+1... please i want it too
just for eye-candy only i guess ...
Seems like trolling to me...
I use manila since I can see all the info I want at a glance and it's easy to get to the data and apps I want with a single slide or tap or hardware keypress (two for less used apps, three for least used, which is good organisation since it matches how we function in real life). There are shortcuts on Leo today screen and the interface is very intuitive. You don't have to "learn" where things are or spend hours setting it up... Enough reasons?
I guess if I wasn't flashing my device so often I may use something that takes time to set up, but is very customisable like SPB, but... I flash a LOT.

What he said.
In my opinion titanium is terrible, SPB shell looks very nice but ater 2 weeks i back to manilla.
Why?
In my opinion newset manilla aka HTC sense not only looks better but also is much more intuitive. HTC also prepared many soft within which SPB simply doesnt'have at all forcing to instal elternative ones.
As i have Diamond also it gives more reasons to use. Main is that only manilla audio manager works without problems with orginal HTC headphones.
I know that SPB shell is fast, manilla slow but despite of it manilla is more complex, easier to configure, more popular with much better XDA support.
Of course not everyone like it, so U can always change it for another ;-)
I don't understand the hype about Manila / Sense, also.
Well i looks nice, but thats all, imho it ist not very usefull for quick accessing Contacts, SMS or System Information.
I'm a great fan of PointUI Home2, which runs very smooth and offers a lot of the functionality i need.
Just my 2 cent.
I installed it but the only thing that changed, is the bottom bar... The clock??

I still can't understand why you people use and like Manila? It's old UI already ~ 2 years old.

just look at this video, look what you can do with SPB + 6.1 mobile + Xperia. It's 10 times for usefull than any Manila. It's faster, no bugs! No sleep death and etc! I was using Manila for 4 month, and after 2.5 LEO i understood that this idea of interface is dead ( HTC understood it too, that's why the created Sense UI on Android )

what noob shot this video?
ever heard about macro mode?
this video only causes headache.
besides is there still the bug with the buttons' alignment of "sence ui" in landscape mode (you can't see that in the video!)?
ps: I don't like manila either.
besides, you can have sense with titanium as well (http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-...o-com/294091/wm6-5-skin-wqvga-titanium-sense/)!

thanks and sorry that i made a video and didn't asked you, and sorry that i don't have a good camera. Sense on titanium can't compare anyhow with sense on SPB IMHO. Yes there is bug with button align but...i myself use landscape only wile typing and win mob sms app works in landscape - you knew that?
I use manilla because I can't buy Pointui 2 pro. I'm from Germany and don't have a mastercard, paypal or everything else. Thats the fact.

I only use Leo for the twitter integration. I love my news on the go right there with no reason to open an app.
Coming to think of it, that is the only reason why I use Leo but lately im thinking about going back to the default xperia rom.

i only use pointui home free 2.1.0.4 since it doesn't have this nasty activation screen every startup and imo it is good enough. i do not really miss any 'pro' features. if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.
So this is my first post, and I'm not sure how "okay" it is to ask these questions here, but I figured it'd be fine since I didn't read anything in the rules that said otherwise.
Basically I came from a Blackjack2 running WinMo 6.1, and I loved the how fast and fluid it is. While I love the Rhodium's interface, it is at most times bulky and hard to navigate/unresponsive/slow.
I'm looking for a SIMPLE WinMo 6.5 ROM that has a nice home screen where I can see time, weather, missed calls, and calendar events, but I don't need the "taskbar" down south, I think it's called Sense (or TouchFlo3D?). I find that most of HTC's "overlays" for the WinMo 6.5 apps are slow and bulky. I can barely text using their texting app.
Is there any ROM out there like this? I looked through the first 5-6 pages and found nothing like what I'm mentioning.
I tried the Energy UltraLite but it seems like I have..nothing with this rom? I can't even figure out how to get into my phone to dial numbers.
Any help is greatly appreciated, I'm still getting acquainted with this phone and the details of how WinMo and custom ROMs work

That Energy rom is meant more for people that just want to load Android on top of WinMo. Try the ROM in my sig if you're willing to try Sense again. It's very responsive. The same chef, b16b, has a ROM with Titanium only and is reportedly working on a 'clean' ROM as well.
the rom development forum is for topics concerning development of roms only, not questions concerning which one is best or the way you like them. there are several "titanium" or chome roms here in the forum that dont have manila, you should try some im sure you will find one you like thread closed.
