Why you use Manila? - XPERIA X1 ROM Development

I still can't understand why you people use and like Manila? It's old UI already ~ 2 years old.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmj-Rv-U-tw
just look at this video, look what you can do with SPB + 6.1 mobile + Xperia. It's 10 times for usefull than any Manila. It's faster, no bugs! No sleep death and etc! I was using Manila for 4 month, and after 2.5 LEO i understood that this idea of interface is dead ( HTC understood it too, that's why the created Sense UI on Android )

i still prefer plain 6.5 (titanium) without manila for it's functionality.
i use manila just to show other people that my x1 can still go further with regards
to customization and eye candy (an overused phrase by the way )
same goes for spb.
what i dont like is too much scrolling and too much flips before you get to touch the app you're actually looking for.
but to each his own
btw, how old is spb?

+1... please i want it too

just for eye-candy only i guess ...

Seems like trolling to me...
I use manila since I can see all the info I want at a glance and it's easy to get to the data and apps I want with a single slide or tap or hardware keypress (two for less used apps, three for least used, which is good organisation since it matches how we function in real life). There are shortcuts on Leo today screen and the interface is very intuitive. You don't have to "learn" where things are or spend hours setting it up... Enough reasons?
I guess if I wasn't flashing my device so often I may use something that takes time to set up, but is very customisable like SPB, but... I flash a LOT.

What he said.

In my opinion titanium is terrible, SPB shell looks very nice but ater 2 weeks i back to manilla.
Why?
In my opinion newset manilla aka HTC sense not only looks better but also is much more intuitive. HTC also prepared many soft within which SPB simply doesnt'have at all forcing to instal elternative ones.
As i have Diamond also it gives more reasons to use. Main is that only manilla audio manager works without problems with orginal HTC headphones.
I know that SPB shell is fast, manilla slow but despite of it manilla is more complex, easier to configure, more popular with much better XDA support.
Of course not everyone like it, so U can always change it for another ;-)

I don't understand the hype about Manila / Sense, also.
Well i looks nice, but thats all, imho it ist not very usefull for quick accessing Contacts, SMS or System Information.
I'm a great fan of PointUI Home2, which runs very smooth and offers a lot of the functionality i need.
Just my 2 cent.

I installed it but the only thing that changed, is the bottom bar... The clock??

ever heard about macro mode?
this video only causes headache.
besides is there still the bug with the buttons' alignment of "sence ui" in landscape mode (you can't see that in the video!)?
ps: I don't like manila either.
besides, you can have sense with titanium as well (http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-...o-com/294091/wm6-5-skin-wqvga-titanium-sense/)!

thanks and sorry that i made a video and didn't asked you, and sorry that i don't have a good camera. Sense on titanium can't compare anyhow with sense on SPB IMHO. Yes there is bug with button align but...i myself use landscape only wile typing and win mob sms app works in landscape - you knew that?

I use manilla because I can't buy Pointui 2 pro. I'm from Germany and don't have a mastercard, paypal or everything else. Thats the fact.

I only use Leo for the twitter integration. I love my news on the go right there with no reason to open an app.
Coming to think of it, that is the only reason why I use Leo but lately im thinking about going back to the default xperia rom.

i only use pointui home free 2.1.0.4 since it doesn't have this nasty activation screen every startup and imo it is good enough. i do not really miss any 'pro' features. if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.

Bye bye Touchflo3D

First I need to say that I really liked Touchflo3D a lot and I didn't stopped using it because it looks bad or may slow down the Diamond a little bit.
I stopped using it because it reminds me too much of the iPhone...unfortunately minus the iPhone usability.
After I went back to the "classic" stylus and thumb operation, my lost happiness using the Diamond returned back. I also enjoy to be able again to easily read all my appointments and tasks which was almost impossible with Touchflo3D.
Tochflo3D looks great, in my opinion better than the iPhone GUI, kudos to HTC for that.
Unfortunately it doesn't offer the same comfort and usability of the iPhone GUI, so it is useless to me. Once HTC succeeds in integrating WM6.1 into Touchflo3D(or vice versa), I may give it another try but right now, it is just a fancy but pretty much useless GUI which reminds me too much of the iPhone comfort and usability and which of course starts to annoy me once I realize that it doesn't work even close to how good the iPhone GUI works with touch operations.
So if you're annoyed by Touchflo3D but still use it because it looks so nice...STOP using it, you will be much more happy with your Diamond, believe me. Once Touchflo3D is gone, you don't compare it to the iPhone anymore, reminding you of the "good old" stylus/thumb operation days and how good the Diamond can be used that way compared to older devices.
Try it, you may love it.
Good call.
I have done the same and only really miss the cute SMS graphics...
HTC obviously CAN do good interfaces as the old TouchFlo was excellent, but this one just isn't quite there yet, and also feels somewhat fiddly compared to the iPhone.
In the meantime the TD runs much better without TF3D, and you can start realising its full potential. Also you are not tempted to use their somewhat flaky audio player etc and can start to look at other alternatives.
If you want gestures and nice graphics, try SPB Shell 2. Works very well and looks great.
Otherwise, try using the device as the WM6 phone it so obviously is, and start to enjoy it...
from the first i didnt like the Touchflo3D its buggy so i disable it and use the normal mode
Yeah, I do fully agree to that!
The "classic" windows mobile interface looks very well on the diamond,
and without TF3D it's fast as hell!
Spb mobile shell is the best interface.
Touch Flo 3d was slow and killed the diamond.
Have to agree with most of the posts in here, TF3D is nice but its such a resourcce hog that after almost a day of using the Diamond...the phone becomes so sluggish even with the tweaks enabled.
Im seriously considering going to the normal non tf3d screen as it doesnt eat as much memory/resources as the tf3d does.
Seriously just try leaving the phone for most of the day and u will see that from 50% it goes up to 70% and makes the phone very sluggish.
Saying that i do hope HTC fix it with a future rom update or perhaps one of the guys in here can do it becuase its a nice interface when it works.
Registry switch for toiuchflow3d?
Does anyone have the registry switch details for touchflow 3d? Thanks.
windows mobile is one ugly thing and the stylus...no thanks...
when i get the touch pro..tf3d it is.

Pardon my earlier stupid question re a registry switch for touchflo. It is of course, as pointed out, simply a today plugin, easily disabled by a t(h)ick!
Well, apparantly some people haven't heard of flashing your phone. My TD with TF3D is fast as hell with my new rom.
Hi
I also disabled Touchflo3D. Is there another possibility to access the weather-application from Touchflo3D? Or does anybody know a similar programm running with WM 6.1?
after you install spb mobile shell, how do you disable/remove touchflo? and make spb shell the default one etc
Settings-today-items:check SPB and remove the check from tf3D ..DONE!

Which ROM are you using?
Using TLR now, and I really can't stop using TFLO3D.
It's damn fast here, and really, getting the everyday things done (read sms, read mail, launch a navigator, make a picture) TFLO3D is really, really good.
No buggs at all, and really fast. The first ones were a bit sluggish, but I can wipe my finger "left-right-left-right" in 1 second, and TFLO3d follows it perfectly.
In terms of usability for me, it gets at least 8 out of 10. There are some things I miss, like reordering my tabs and GETTING A DECENT CALENDAR but for the rest its great.
It brings back the simpleness of a mobile phone to the foreground, while still you have a suberb device at the background.
I quite like it too but I do miss the exact things you have just mentioned. I'm not looking for a replacement, but I do wonder can it be hacked so we can get more out of it? Or must we wait for HTC to listen to our cry for help. This is my first HTC device so I don't know, but from what I hear we should not be holding our breath. This surprised me, as I buy other HTC's for my staff at work, and HTC's reputation to me was exemplary, and they are the market leaders. Then I came here, and now I hear so much bad stuff about them.

You never used an iPhone, did you?
I'm using the TLR ROM too but Touchflo3D is C.R.A.P..
I owned WM phones before(TyTN, TyTN II, i780, etc.) and I like Windows Mobile, version 6.1 is really a good step towards a finally very well working phone OS, I just can't wait to see WM7. Like I said before, Touchflo3D LOOKS great, much better than the iPhone GUI but operation SUCKS bigtime, not even close to iPhone. Don't forget that HTC started the whole "touch" series because of the iPhone, not because people really asked for it. That said, a comparison to the iPhone is mandatory and yes, I know, the display technology is completely different and WM6.1 lacks a proper finger touch operation API, right.
I removed Tochflo3D because I wanted to have an almost perfect "classic"(stylus, sometimes fingers) Windows Mobile phone, not a half-bread iPhone wannabee.
What can I say? I'm a happy camper now, especially since I can for example see five different calender events on the same page without having to touch the unit.
Regarding Touchflo3D improvements: I'm not sure we're going to see substantial improvements to the usability(speed isn't really the issue), unless some genius programmer finds a clever way to cope for the different display technology and missing "real" finger usage API of WM6.1. I also wish somebody here on xda-developers with brains and time on this hand could "integrate" WM6.1(icons, etc.) much more into Touchflo3D, so Touchflo3D doesn't look and feel sometimes like a simple GUI "cover" only.
I'm pretty sure that Windows Mobile 7 will be the answer to all our questions and hopes but til then...well...hello Touch Diamond II or whatever it's name will be.

Spb Mobile 2.0 vs Tf3d

I'm not really gettin used to touchflow yet and I'm checking out other options. So... Lets get down to business:
The things that bugs me in touchflow are:
1.the todayscreen not being able to show more calendarevents.
2. the sms screen, the whole layout really
3. The mediaplayer
4. The alarm, every aspect there as well
I know that there are substitute programs for most of these problems BUT as I have to go in and select the appropriate program I fail to see the advantage of Touchflow..
The things I love with Tf3d are its speed and beautiful graphics and they will be soarly missed if I would go with another shell.
Are there any other touchfriendly options?
What are the pros and cons with Spb mobile shell 2.0? Especially regarding these issues!
Yours sinceraly
Adis Hardis
Sorry but I think you're a bit lazy. Why don't you just download a trial of spb mobile shell and see for yourself?
To be fair, I think he wants opinions..
SPB Software always rates highly in my books, I used to use the Shell on my Hermes. My girlfriend used to hate it, as it restricts access to the main features of the phone unless you kill it off.
But I guess if you tweak it to how you want it, then you never need to access the back end of the phone, pretty much like the HTC one I guess.
SMS's are visible (at least the count) on the main screen, and link direct to the pocket outlook folder
Media player - There's non built in, so again it's just a link.
Urm, Alarm again is built in.. Unless you put SPB time on??
Guess its worth a try! There's plenty of support on their forums, and hundreds of themes for it
I'm no expert in these areas but can I install spb without uninstalling? (and loosing all the settings and so forth). Cause thats my main concern!
Lazy or not, thats what forums are there for in my opinion, to get input and help...
Adis Hardis
Ps
Thank you MikeSel
Yeah you can, there simply 'today' plugins so you can disable one, and enable the other.. Make an informed decision and then dump one if you like.. Or just keep both, and leave one disabled
Have fun, and give me a shout if you get stuck!
Nice, I'm on it, thanks for your help Mike!

i just recently installed SPB mobile on my diamond and i love it a lot more then TF3D. I thought TF3D was great at first, but it a shame it's not configurable even with TF3D advanced config etc installed. Only the very basic functionality is available. It does look very good though and maybe the future could hold great things for it. But for now and the near future SPB mobile is the winner for me
-it's better and more customizable
-it's got lot's of good plugins
-the latest version got guestures like touch flow
-runs smooth as silk
-great animation without slowdowns
-all of the functions are easy accessible
Tried spb 2.1 for a week, but changed back to tf3d.
For my use, tf3d its enough and mobile shell, is atm a bit slower than tf3d and i dont like the default look. And with a better looking vga skin its slower than the first versions of manila, so i stay with tf3d.

Manilla vs. Htc Home

This topic may be a bit premature seeing how manilla 2d is still in it's beta stages but...
I havn't tryed Manilla 2d yet but for everyone who has, what do you like/dislike about it? Would you prefer it over Htc Home? Why would you? I'm using Htc Home right now. Especially with the nice Htc Customizer.
I suggest you try it first, before creating a thread - it only takes 5 minutes..
and to answer your question I prefer Home.
Manila absolutely no question about it. Seriously, this is like asking if one prefers a bumper car or a real car. Just my .02 but i think you'll find most will choose manila.
over Manilla
I found this thread while looking for a non Manilla ROM after being annoyed by the screen rotation to not want to use it any more.

it looks cool and stuff but i changed back from manilla to the htc home because manilla had to many bugs

Search for AthineOS. He made two roms, one for manilla and one for htc home. Rom is superfast. I also suggest Duttys_WM6[1].1_5.2.19700_Hybrid_V2 rom. Not so lite as AthineOS rom, it's a very good rom and always had decent battery life no matter what radio u used...
Back to topic..
This is exactly what i wanted. So far poll is 2-2. I think Manilla will outweigh HHome once all the bugs are tweaked and landscape = 100% other than the quick fix he has out right now. In any case, they are both really nice apps to have for our today screen and for the authors to have many donations going there way..
Home until the bugs are sorted although have recently fiddled with mobile shell and throttle launcher. I find I keep going back to home with ultimate launch.

Great analogy mate haha
I figured I would try Manila2D for a day and then go back to HTC Home when it first came out in a Rom but from the moment I first used it I fell in love with the feel and ease of use. You can navigate through all the menus using your finger or DPad as prefered whereas Home tended to be very fiddly and I was always using my stylus or the start menu to get where I wanted. Im using SJ's OPAL build 11th Oct now and I have absolutely no bugs and its extremely fast and responsive. In my experience most of the people who have experienced problems in the latest builds have been down to bad flashes. I always advise everyone to shut down all other programs and keep the Rom update program in the foreground when flashing and to take out the sim card to avoid all posibility of glitches occuring.
Manila wins hands down anyday.
I use neither, because:
1. Manilla vanilla, shmanilla. Sheesh, if I wanted a touchflo device I would buy a Touch Pro/HD or something like that. Every second thread in development and hacking is about manilla something or other. Enough already.
2. I HATE fingerprints, smears, etc on my screen.
3. HTC Home requires far too much Today real estate!
This is my setup:
PhoneAlarm Pro with B&W pure Skin (small footprint)
PDC (Pocket Digital Clock) with Alien Round fonts
Sun n Moon
Homescreen ++ (Ex Batterystatus) with Tray Icons activated.
SPB Traveller
TodayAgenda
And then I use S2U2 with an animated gif. That's it.
I use manilla. I love the customization of it. I love using my fingers to get to the things I use. I alos love the themes I can make. Home just never appealled to me at all. I was lucky enough not to have my phone bit for a week or two before M2d came out.
I use Manilla. It's attractive, responsive, and well laid-out. It's not perfect, though -- I find the built-in weather app pretty weak and I like Live Search better than Google Maps. But even with those complaints, I still prefer Manilla.
You forgot the "None" option. No matter how hard I try, I keep going mad at those "newfangled" interfaces - both of them - and end deactivating them after 1 hour.
Good'ole today plugins and Quickmenu rule.
MANILLA!
If I wanted things plain ole, I'd buy a flip phone or something. Manilla looks great, works great and I wouldn't have anything else.
The new ThrottleLauncher 0.9.5 Beta destroys Manilla. I cannot stand how hard it is to customize Manilla (not graphically), where ThrottleLauncher can be customized very easily. The lastest release is quite fast!

Yes you can always buy a new device with TouchFLO but roms are something free.
I have used Manila for a few weeks and, trust me, you won't have fingerprints on your screen unless your fingers are sweaty. You will always wipe away your fingerprints with touchs

I'm definitely keeping my eye on ThrottleLauncher. I like it a lot in concept, and customizability is great. But my experimenting with the 0.9.5 Beta didn't impress me much. It still felt a little sluggish and I just couldn't control it as accurately and quickly as manilla.
I need to try loading it onto a lighter ROM and doing a little customization.

Make sure you installed NetCF 3.5, and that apps are set to use it as defualt. I turned off all the transarency and went into the vars.xml and set my fps to 30 (because the editor is 20 max). It's smooth and quick.
PM me if you want the NetCF 3.5 standalone cab and NetCF config tool cab. I don't want to hijack this thread more than I already have.
why doesnt a chef put the new TL on a rom ...that would be so cool
I like having all my info available to me on one screen, especially the weather. I have my phone set up to use HTC home, Calendar++, and weatherbug. I don't have any ugly scrollbars on my screen, I have a clear view of messages, time, next appointments, and weather for the next three days, all without having to click through various screens. Plus, Manilla, HTC Weather, and pretty much any other built-in weather app I've used does not have weather info for my small town I live in, but weatherbug does, plus I get severe weather alerts and it's very customizable.
I hate Manila, it sucks to me! HTC Home allow you to have more things under control on the screen. HTC Home no doubts

Touch-IT 5.05 RC2 Vs Touch-IT 21202 WM6.5 RC1

Hi All..
Can you share which one do you prefer?
Touch-IT 5.05 RC2 (OR) Touch-IT 21202 WM6.5 RC1 ?
wat a good question u asked ther. for me, really really hard to decide.
wm6.5 got nice n smooth interface but cant get touch hd camera driver n all rhodium nice stuff.
wm6.1 v5.04 got all nice stuff n nice to cope with daily usage which mean more practical usage everyday.
in da end, i still choose wm6.1 v5.04 better la.. i feel like it got better ram management as it loads opera instantly from ram. more practical.
touch hd camera also provide better low light shooting. auto forus all da time also nicer.
besides ts.. u should make this thread as poll rather than ask like that.
I love Touch-IT v5...cant imagine me converting to the 6.5 rom...though I have never tried it.
Maybe I will if I have some spare time.
although 6.5 looks really nice, I'm gonna hold the update till the final version is released.
today, 5.04 works nicely, no problems at all after aplying the fixes found in the thread and very much better than the (really lite) stock rom-
Can't decide
I'm undecided... Its like I'm caught between two lovers... Personally I find the latest 6.5 ROM to be much better with RAM management, but like devalian said, the 6.1 ROM is much better for daily usage.
I was honestly expecting a lot more bugs in the 6.5 ROM but it actually worked exceptionally well. For those who haven't tried 6.5, I suggest you try it, those who haven't tried the latest 6.1, I suggest you try that also, either way, you can't loose.
lolz honestly mate i just got my phone tday and im on 4th rom ,and out of all those, and judging only on first impresions i like 6.5 i know there are bugs and stuff but nothing deal breaking ill keep the 6.5 for a while.
I am torn between my iPhone and Xperia X1. I want to switch my daily working phone from iPhone to X1 but the bugs in WM6.5 keeps me switches back to iPhone.
I am not a big fan of TouchFlow, the email envelop of the touchflow turned me off.
I prefer wm6.5. so far with wm6.5 RC1, the phone is fast (fast in scrolling, screan orientation..and others) and the battery can last longer (2 days).
However, I like the Opera browser in touch it 5.05 because it has a slider touch to change the zoom level and it has vibration feedback when clicking the link.
Until now, I have no idea why the opera browser in 5.05 different from others.

In my opinion the WM6.5 Touch-it is far superior. im loving it at the moment
Im not a manila fan so i go for wm6.5 rom.
I find TF3D boring, not appealing and troublesome to add program 1 by 1.
Why? The flip clock is always there with [Call history and Calendar] which coulnt be changed. I prefer it to be something like CommManger or MSN or something else. 3days and I getting bored already. Moreover you can only change the background image for Home screen tab and not others. Although there's something floating around the forum which let you change every wallpaper of the tab, i find it troublesome (yes im lazy) and not attractive. Its still the same ol tab just with different background. *Manila fans will hate me for sure
So i go for WM6.5 with something new - (Titanium) home screen & menu. Adding a weather & Windows Live tab to home screen, changed the honeycomb column, install some basic need program and my device is ready for use.

So you're saying it could actually function for everyday use? I was under the impression the ROM was more or less ment as a preview for 6.5. I didn't realise there were versions of winmo 6.5 floating around which could actually be used
Does stuff like ms exchange, mail syncing, work on winmo 6.5? Do apps made for winmo 6.1 work on 6.5 aswell?

Yes, I've been using this ROM for everyday use since it came out (only annoying thing is answering the phone when it's on keylock)
MS Exchange works (mail, calender, contacts)
Most apps work fine, some show minor glitches (in PIM BackUp it's impossible to deselect messagefolders for backup)

The phone thing is actually a big downfall for me, by keylock do you mean tabbing the upper button or keeping the lock key pressed?

I think he meant the keylock by software where you have to slide to unlock. I do think the keylock(slider) not too perfect at the moment.... and I don't use it.

[13.11.09] Touch-IT Leo v10 Multilang -discontinued at xda

Welcome to Touch-IT Leo v11
I am removing my roms due to conflicts with certain members at xda, this looks like it cant be solved in normal ways. And because I do not want anymore of the bickering and fighting, I am pulling my work from XDA and all support is moved to you know where. I cant even mention that name anymore here.
Sorry to see this happen here, where I have learned so much, and met so many wonderful ppl.
I'd really like to try this rom except that there is no landscape support.. that kinda ruined it for me.
Do you know if you might make a similar rom (including twitter and footprints), with landscape support?
- Chainy
I'll reply on itje's behalf: NO!
See, the thing is that LEO doesn't have landscape. It's not created yet, it doesn't exist yet, it's not available yet. Buy hopefully it will be by the end of the year? Blame it on HTC
I don't think I'm going to use this just yet, but very very nice. Love the twitter tab.
Does it still use the vulcan (X2) drivers?
actually, i will prefer facebook tab more..
nice rom anyway, itje, thx
no landscape?
maybe it's time to write down what "no landscape-support" actually means in daily use:
landscape is working fine in windows itself (settings etc) and
in standalone-apps (opera, skype, whatever...).
it is not implemented into manila by htc yet, so if you slide the keyb out on let's say home-screen, you'll just see a black background.
but:
in manila, landscape is working in:
- writing messages (sms, mail) - you can write with your hw-keyb
- viewing pictures in album
- playing videos in album
i think the fact "no landscape" sounds worse than it actually is. of course it would be nice to have it, but during daily use it's lack is hardly noticable.

I second that. Nice ROM (again!)
suggestions
1. Rostrain claims to have 100% landscape working in his ROMs (something to do with his g-spot! "g-spot mod is a button.when u press it it executes scripts that only a gsensor does..so we have the landscape that only gsensor phones have!")... I have no idea.
2. Is it possible to have 4 icon column menus in your roms please (takes too long to scroll all the way to the bottom).
3. Is it possible to have a scroll bar in the menus (again quicker to scroll to the bottom and also so you know where you are in the menu)
Many thanks for your time.
rawr... itje is always full of surprises... am gonna wait for this cool rom!!
wow... ! just need landscape
Looking forward to this ROM. Should be good ^^
WinMo 6.5 is slowly growing on me. Just as long as it's quite fast and smooth.

1. Rotastrain has modded the manila version he has..so if that is wanted/needed..get a cab for it..I do not like making roms with to much "modding" I prefer to keep it as close to original as possible. Its easier to keep track of bugs from HTC..if I should not keep track of other ppls bugs coming with the mods aswell
2. No, I make the roms the way I like it, and that will not change. Also.. I dont enjoy the 4 column way, and neither do I like to many folders...
3. No, not possible
