Manual 1.5 Android firmware update...link please - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello people,
Thought I'd ask nicely...but can someone track down the link to the new 1.5 Cupcake OTA update that T-Mobile is pushing out now.
I haven't rooted my phone and don't want to at the moment.
I'm not in the USA so won't get the over the air update like many other overseas G1 users.
A download link would be awesome and much appreciated.
Cheers
Ketzal

Hi, the actual download link hasn't been discovered yet, so you just have to wait a while before we get the T-mobile firmware for 1.5. It will be pretty obvious when we do discover the link, so visit the forum often! =]

Hey there everyone. I had to un-root my USA G1 because I had just added "My Faves" to my account and could not get the My Faves icon to show up on my rooted G1.
I am now back at USA RC29 and would like to get back to Cupcake, but want the official T-Mobile version instead of jailbreaking my phone again.
I called T-Mobile and they said it might take 3 days for the OTA Cupcake update to arrive. Is there a link to a USA Cupcake image I can download and install manually?
Thanks!

Search? http://allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5692&p=40392#p40393

You are aware you don't need the myfaves icon for myfaves right?
YOu unrooted your G1 just for an icon? You could've downloaded JFs 1.51 CRB43 US update for that.

Doh! I have been so far away from when I rooted the phone (I think it was April) that when I went back to search for My Faves i got overwhelmed by everything that has updated or changed since then.

go to settings-about phone- and click system updates
that should help you out

I'm in the same boat..i'm on 1.5 and when i try to manually update the phone it says that the system is up to date..i dont get it

CyanogenMod stable doesnt seem right somehow
If you want to sell it rooted, than go with emo modded crc1 build, it's almost a stock build but still a rooted custom mod, or you can unroot by downloading rc29 which will put it back to stock and than wait for the ota updates

Uhm instead of having to wait for the automatic update, I will come to the rescue! [flys] Here is how to manually check for updates VIA your G1.
1. First, have AnyCut installed if you don’t already
2. Next, Create a new shortcut on your phone’s desktop. Select “AnyCut” and then select “Activity”
3. Select “Device Info” as your activity. I can’t find any other way to get to this activity on the phone
4. Press the new shortcut icon you have created.
5. Scroll to the bottom and find the “Check for Updates” button. Click it. You may have to a few times for it to succeed.
6. Once the “checkin” has succeeded, exit back to your home screen and you will be prompted to install the update.
Wait for it to finish download then go to home screen.
-I did not create this guide just feeled like sharing it with you. Here is the original post. Hope it helps you like it did to me!
If you are unrooting the device and need the stock CRB43 Cupcake build, check my sig.

Questions
1.can I update to cupcake without having to setup my phone?(i dont have data plan)
2.Whenever I try to download something on the market, it just says 'starting download' and never starts
3.Can I develop apps with the current android sdk that will work on firmware 1.1 AND 1.5?
I do not have a data plan, and I had to go to a T-Mobile store and fight with the people there until they finally let me use a SIM card to set it up...and I do NOT want to go through that again
also, I'm a C++ programmer with 3 years experience, but no experience at all in Java...so will it be hard, or easy to start developing apps for android?
PLEASE help me with this, even if you can only answer one of the questions it will be GREATLY appreciated since this phone is more complicated than a rubiks cube!

Yes, you can update it and it won't ask for a re-avtivation, dun worry buddy !
The market stuff is crazy sometimes ! Just reboot the phone, and everything will be ok ( make sure your wifi connection is strong enough )
Since I am only a highschool's senior, I can't answer the last question ! Sorry
When you start a project using eclipse with the SDK installed correctly it will ask you 1.1, 1.5, or API.
Search the forums about activating without a dataplan there are instructions on how to do it.
You need the current sdk for cupcake, there is also a ndk for making native c apps too now, so hope you make something good
thanks for the replies.
I rebooted the phone and the downloads worked thx
do you know how to install the cupcake update? I went to setting and system updates, but it said my phone was up-to-date

Since you are on a modded rom, you cannot receive updates, pick out a new rom and go into recovery and flash it, since I am going to assume you are on an old recovery, you are gonna have to rename it to update.zip and put it on the root of your sd

You can manually install the update using the threads here, or at t-mobile.com/forums ( go the development section ). The update feature of the phone sucks badly, don't trust it
btw, u make me feel old (
I found on google that if you place update.zip on your phone and boot by pressing home+power, you can update it like that, but will that make me have to setup my phone again? I dont have a data plan, so i'll just stay with 1.1 if I have to
I haven't really started with android development yet, but I've given it a look over. I'm coming from c#.net and most of the syntax is the same, as they are both have roots in C you shouldn't have a problem there. So it's mostly just learning the platform and it's library. .net is managed though like android.
Eclipse isn't really in the same league as Visual Studio though.

if you flash a rom that is based on the adp phone (cyanogen's comes to mind)
you can skip singing into your google account until you have wifi set up.
so if i just do the update.zip trick with the cyanogen thing I wont have to sign in with google at all??!?!

99% sure about this, I've been flashing ROMs, Radio and stuffs regarding my G1 for a while. At first it was kinda scared indeed, but as long as you get through the first time, the left is as easy as eating an apple pie . Ask me and I will answer if I can
all you do is
put the update.zip on the root of your sdcard (i.e. no folders)
power down your phone and boot into recovery with home and power
(optional but may be required if your phone doesn't boot all the way up.)
wipe your phone.
flash the rom
reboot and wait for phone to boot up
choose to skip signing into google
set up your wifi
open the market and you can sign into google on wifi and be able to download apps.
OMG IT WORKED! thanks to all of you
hopefully it wont crash in the future!

Cant get past dum activation screen after flashing dreaimg.nbh and cupcake

i dont have a data plan now so i cant activate the phone and i cant use adb cause its not working on win7 for me..is there anyway i can just flash spl and radio and skip the recovery image? I tried someones sim but it just says error when i try to register.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.. or Confirm this is correct. but..
If you're on an official rom you're out of luck, but if you can update to an ADP rom no login will be required. It's not a SPL or radio issue, purely rom based.

ADP means Android Developer Phone.

Oh both sims were tmobile US, and the other phone was a moto zn5 so it wasnt a g1 plan.
So I'm *assuming* you're on a G1. You basically have three choices, either goto a t-mobile store and beg one of their techs to let ya use their data to register, find someone else with a g1+data and ask to use their sim card or go adp.
The downside of going with an adp rom is you'll loose the t-mobile branded stuff like tmo ringtones, the myfaves app, ?youtube? (not sure on this one, you should do some reading first or hope someone else chips in).
If you really need your phone now, and are able to install custom roms the adp version of donut can be found --here-- Note: I run the official roms so am not too well versed in ADP vs. AOSP+ADP but it looks like you may actually want the latter(AOSP+ADP)

No, no renaming the recovery image.
Ok, so let me get this straight. You unrooted a rooted phone, to install the official cupcake so you could "one touch" root it which installs a custom recovery image @ the same time?

Gotcha, headaches gone but unfortunately it looks like your stuck. It appears this process *assumes* you have a data connection(for the login process) and without this most guides out there are going to be useless, especially at this point.
I'd say add data for a month or w/e then remove it if you must once done doing what you're doin... or go back to looking for someone with data that can help ya get logged in. Bout the only ways out I can forsee atm.. Wish I could be more help...

You can always do it the old-fashioned way... Just downgrade to RC29, login with WiFi. Then do the root process that way. Only takes 15min at most.

There's a way to bypass it with rooted ROMs, of which RC29 is one. You can. There's a whole guide on how to do it.

What's the highest official ROM?

My local provider doesn't seem to have the Dream listed. The one in my possession runs 1.5 at the moment.
flashing procedure as well would be appreciated.
Official is 1.6. There should be an OTA update from your service provider. Any custom installs require root.
Do providers have the same method of supplying OTA or will I have to ask my provider?
Just download the official 1.6 rom and install it on your phone by renaming to "update.zip" and flashing it.
I can't post a link cuz I'm new, but google "official 1.6 g1" and you'll find it.
I don't know how to force an OTA.

that might not be the case, i got flamed on here once because i asked if a non rooted phone can run 1.6
what ppl didn't realize was that many providers have not created 1.6 ota, tmobile is the only that i know of (now) that has
Rogers has not i know of forsure.
Yes, 1.6 is the highest like everyone else has said. You will notice on this forum we have ROM's going all the way up to 2.1 or so.
Just my opinion and my advice, stick to 1.6. The G1 in my opinion just doesn't have the hardware to run 2.1 as well as a reliable every-day use phone should, especially as you have more and more applications and widgets, etc.

If you have robbers and have all the latest OTA's (1.5), then you've been screwed -- need JTAG to get root.
The latest HTC build (the word "official" doesn't apply to android at all) is 1.6, which you can get from developer.htc.com/adp.html -- flashing procedures includes, however, they won't work if you don't have root.
The OTA updates for each provider differ in their security keys, so an update for one provider WILL NOT work on a phone sold by someone else.
so i have to root the phone to run 1.6?

If you could simply goldcard any old build onto a robbers dream, they wouldn't be stuck at 1.5 -- instead, you need to disassemble and jtag.

Yeah, it's something like that in system/app
sprint_core.apk in /system/app there may be an odex. i always rm NameOfApp.*
if you delete the apk it may cause problems(maybe. didnt for me but has for others). you also wont be notified of vm's. youll have to call to check. on a 2.1 rom, that is. thats how it worked for me anyway.
personally, my vm isnt working on my new device. like it never set itself up correctly. if anyone should happen to have a link to some instructions to set this up, that would be fantastic. I hate calling the silly people at sprint. thank you

it didnt work. i removed the original, flashed yours. still have the undelivered message, the activation message. nothing is working, i cant figure it out. and when i called sprint, they reset my vm, so i lost messages and had to set up everything again...
FYI to Impaler, your VVM version in your sig works for those in areas where an official update has not rolled through yet.
Don't know if you are aware, but Sprint recently updated the VVM software to version T.5.1.0.48 (here in TX it was updated the last week of October). Note that Sprint CSR will not be able to help you reset it unless you are on a Sense ROM. Period.
Two options to fix on your non-Sense ROM... there is an updated .apk floating around on these boards (might need to PM someone for it). Get it and install via your file manager.
Or...
Other way is to nandroid your current ROM, then flash a Sense ROM like Fresh's most current. Then, update your PRL and Profile, then go into the VVM and press Menu and update Sprint VVM.
Then, either try to nandroid back to your original ROM and check to see if that does it (haven't tried that, but it might work)... or else... yes, you will need to pull the updated com.coremobility.app.vnotes from the Sense ROM and install the pulled .apk into your new ROM.
Hope this helps.
mr. implaler, I have used yours for the last weeks successfully, so thank you. I just ran into the same problem with the mandatory upgrade, and it is an update i did before I rooted my phone. the VM did work this morning on MUIU but i loaded MYN and that is when my issue started.

I had 9016 in the blocked texts list. Hope this helps you.
Excellent...let me add to this...
I suppose using variations of ROMS that don't include VVM and block 9016 caused this issue.
You can unblock 9016 by going to your account online, under "My Devices," then "My Preferences." Scroll down to the "Limits and permissions" section. You will see the "Block Texts" link there.

Then, either try to nandroid back to your original ROM and check to see if that does it (haven't tried that, but it might work)... or else... yes, you will need to pull the updated com.coremobility.app.vnotes from the Sense ROM and install the pulled .apk into your new ROM.
Hope this helps.
