I may be being totally daft, but I can't seem to find anywhere in the interface that has the supposed TouchFlo features. The contact app seems to be just the regular WM6 one.
Can someone please give me an example of where the TouchFlo features are used on the Kaiser?
It's pretty subtle, if you are in a long document, say contacts, you can touch the screen downward in a sweeping motion and the contacts should scroll down continuously. You should hear clicking like a roulette wheel, slowing down till it stops. (You can disable that sound). This works vertical and horizontal (if there is reason to scroll).
It's pretty subtle. Some have complained that it doesn't work well with IE and have loaded Opera-Mini to get that functionality to work better. I've tried both and they seem to work OK for me.
It's not very well implemented.
This is the difference between actually creating something useful and adding a feature just to have it on a checklist ("can scroll using flick like iphone") !
Thanks for the replies, I finally get it. It's pretty lame as-is, I really hope someone will manage to extend the functionality in a custom rom in the future.

It is not that lame, in my opinion. actually, it is rather more useful than the whole cube-thing implemented on the Touch. ie, if your in the car and try to get to a certain contact or scroll a word doc, it is a lot easier to just touch the screen with your finger rather than use the stylus to scroll using the scroll bars.
i like this feature and i dont consider it as a just-to-be-there feature.
I'm pretty sure my palm pda/phone from 5 years ago had Touch Flo

no, seriously .. i remember using my finger to scroll pages on it's browser .. Samsung SPH-i300

Improved Usability
Drag the stylus anywhere on screen to scroll a web page. Increase viewable content on the screen with the small font option. Get essential starting tips through the Help menu.
Isn't that what TouchFlo does ?

imagine a piece of paper that you could only see though a small hole (screensize). if you pressed your finger down on the paper, and slide it toward you (down), the text on that paper would appear to scroll up, and vice versa...
by the time someone finds the reg tweak, we'll all probably be used to it...

Yeah i know what your saying...But to me it just seems wrong which is why i pretty much don't use it.....Im pretty much used to now scrolling using the scroll bar.
and to me it would be much more useful if it was the other way.

TouchFlo=Iphone WannaBe Marketing Trick
Someone else said earlier and they were dead on: all these top of the line pocket pc /cell phone makers got blind sided by Apple's touch screen, which basically makes the Iphone.
So a smart alec at HTC said "let's whip out a touch flo phone, out comes the HTC Touch, and now let's plaster touch technology everywhere on each model as a marketing gimmick to keep up with the Jones' "
I mean 1 million Iphones sold since June 29th as of today...what choice did they have?
The reslut: Touch Flo technology a la cheap, not using the right screen (Iphone screens cost up the wazoo and are made by Balda of Germany) and is basically no different than the D pad...so NO, HTC phones do not have ANY touch tech. yet.

For me it is. especially if it is in internet explorer, where the scroll wheel jumps from link to link, while the touchflo scrolls pages. i know we can modify the scroll wheel behaviour to scroll pages as well, but as it came from the factory this is the behaviour.
plus, if u are driving, it is easier to just touch the display once rather than keep your finger pressed on the d-button or on the wheel.

All the videos I've seen show the UI being used with the finger? Are there any every day tasks that you can't do using the TF3D UI? I fully accept that 3rd party apps may require the stylus as to some obscure settings under WM so I'm really after any every day type tasks.
TIA
to be honest, I never use the stylus anymore!

Yea.. ever since I got the Cruise, I hardly used the stylus!
Same thing with the Diamond. Only for scribbling notes...
I use the stylus on the diamond quite a bit actually...mainly because even with all those tweaks to tf3d...its still a bit laggy imo ie when i go to close programs from the task manager i use the stylus...sometimes i just find it easier to use than say my finger....not quite used to the touchscreen with my fingers.
Soft-reset!
i think in the week and a half i have had this thing, i've only used the stylus for soft resetting as chainfire has said, and occasional letters on the full qwerty where i hadn't aligned the screen properly.
i find that after a bit of practice, youcan do pretty much anything on this thing with your fingers or in my case a thumb, the touchflo seems to allow for a little inaccuracy in that regard
I use it to click on those really teeny buttons like the X and task manager.
sometimes it just gets frustrating, on one hand they call it a TOUCH diamond and yet the user interface is not *as* consistent as it should be for full finger input only.
styluslessness...
Im the same, ever since Ive had the Ameo ive not really used the stylus on phones, the more i dont have the use it the better.
The touchflo3D does make things alot easier and alot of it seems to make sense how the ui works, rather than having to revert back to the standard windows mobile interface. All it needed was bigger buttons! Now theres a thought! hehe.
So far, touch diamond = all good!

If thats aimed at me then ive soft resetted the phone a good few times. Its not as laggy as it was before the tweaks to tf3d...the tweaks really did help but i have absolutely no qualms about using the stylus to make my way around the phone.
I use the stylus when i need to get somewhere quick.
Eg
- i need to make an urgent phone call to someone who isnt in my recent call list, Using your finger you'll probably dial someone else by mistake
- To send a text message quickly, without messing around deleteating letters and correcting the T9.
- For navigating outside of touch flow.
Its a great phone, but the screen sensativity isnt great, and to be honest its inconsistant - better in the middle, and worse at the sides. So its too easy to select the wrong thing. Especially in touchflo when scrolling etc.
I use it for pretty much all text entry - emails, SMS, notes, etc.

Actually I try to use the stylus whenever I can cuz i hate fingerprints on the screen.. yuck.
I've been using Windows Mobile for about a year now, and have yet to see any improvement on it by Microsoft. It seems all other companies except the software giant are destroying it. Of course, I still like Windows Mobile, or I wouldn't be using it, but is there still enough going for it to keep using it?
First, let me start out with the interface...
Today Screen
This is what greets us when we turn on the device. Now, I'm not saying there's not a lot to love about this. You could use a new theme everyday and last for months. But how well does it go with the rest of the system? When you leave the today screen, you practically leave the customization, and are most likely in a typical windows mobile app (and have to wait in an un-animated manner for it to load). To fix: make all apps work together! make it more finger friendly, more customizable, and finally, MORE ANIMATED!
Notifications
Now, this is where windows mobile just... sucks (for lack of better words...)
Typically, you can either have a 90's pop-up window on the bottom of the screen, or a little tiny icon on the top. HTC has made it a little better by making the tap of the top screen enlarge the icons, but it is still very annoying to use. To fix: both the iPhone and Android have great notification systems. A nice, graphical window pops up in the middle of the screen, giving you an easy way to read and react to it,and escape it if need be. How hard would it be to implement a new way of getting notifications?
The bottom bar
I don't know about everyone, but I HATE the bottom bar. To me, it just seems like a waste of space. It shouldn't be there as much as it is. It should be smarter, and more finger friendly. To fix: make it not there unless it is really needed. Rely more on gestures, and when it is needed, make it larger and more graphical, with easy to use and useful buttons/links.
Scroll bars
I think we can all agree on this one. Windows Mobile has the smallest scroll bars I think I've ever seen in an OS. A toddler could barely use them! Android and the iPhone both have their own solutions, and I think a combination of them should be implemented. To fix: make them not need to be there. Use touch gestures instead. And when they do need to be there, have a large little "pull bar" (like Android) to move, and when it is not needed, have it disappear.

buy ftouchsl and use advanced config to hide the scroll bars(hard to scroll through windows folder though)

There are just too many TOUCH's in your FIXES!
Keep in mind: Windows Mobile - yes, even WM6.1 - is basically meant to be used with a STYLUS! I personally do not like to touch my screen all the time with my fingers; I sure know a lot of people like it and there is nothing wrong with that, however, I am one of the few out there actually using the stylus!
Also, your list is quite 'outdated' considering the fact that WM7 is in the making (just google it in the internet and you will see that all of your wishes is been working on!). For everything else, well, there are 3rd party application or hacks and tweaks available!
If WM wouldn't be the way it is, we would not have such a great place as XDA Developers.
The strength of WM is its customizability. My WM device is almost exclusively touch friendly. No stylus needed. I have a front end that is totally finger friendly (spb pocket plus), contacts (icontact), keyboard (pocket cm keyboard), image viewer (imageviewer), a finger friendly WMP skin (plus S2P).
Devin
I agree somewhat with what the OP has said, and I do agree that WM could use an overhaul (and it is getting one).
That said, I would be perfectly happy with the current WM setup if we could just get some better touch screens on these things. When all is said and done, I still like my Tilt much more than my iPhone, except for the touch screen. I can actually touch a very small object on the screen of that one with the pad of my thumb, it's so sensitive...on my Tilt, I often feel like the the screen is fighting with me whenever I try and touch it.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that, for me at least, WM needs an overhaul in the hardware department first.
Most of the issues can be modified with the infinite programs/options on this great site, but it´s a fact that WM needs to do something serious before he starts to get slow on the race...
WM 6.5? some say soon, but nothing really impressive I think
WM7? It looks promosing but let´s see...
LOL!!!
WinMo and I have a love/hate relationship.
For the general graphics of WM, like the scrollbars and buttons, they seemed to be the same basic crap from the first release.
Like orb3000, I too have a love/really hate relationship with WM. It does have its share of great software support (honestly can you run full screen videos on any other mobile as smoothly as tcpmp?, though i did not try iPhone ). But then it looses out on some very basic requirements like proper and systematic contact management, which most S60 3rd Edition devices have .
I have been reading this site for just about a year now. I think this might be my first post! If I missed this with my searches, please give me the correct terms to search with.
I like the idea of "GScroll", but the only feature of this application that was appealing to me was the "double tap" for instant applications.
I realize that this is only $4.99.
I also have been reading on how unreliable this application is! I do not want to waste my money....
Can anyone here make a simple to install (cab) that has something similar to this feature of GScroll? But more reliable!
Thanks!!
I myself bought gscroll and have had no problems with it. Like u i mostly wanted to be able to edit the capacitive buttons. But i have gotten to where i really like the task switcher also. If you have more than one program running u can simply swipe ur finger across the buttons and get a nifty task switcher like ALT+TAB in windows.
Agreed. gScroll is the best $5 software I have ever purchased. The funny thing is, the name implies that it is for using the g-sensor for scrolling by tilting. That's the unreliable part and the one I have disabled.
The app switcher is, perhaps, the best feature on the phone. I can now officially laugh at iPhone users that can't even run two apps at once, and we get a swipe to switch in between? Shoot, it's not even funny.
The double tap launch is also great. I've got all 5 zones set up to launch a browser, podcatcher, the camera, hTorch flashlight and a 'close' current program button. It is easy to accidentally launch a program with this, but it's not horrible. The convenience is better than the risk of launching an errant program. Between this and editing the long press values of the touchpad keys & PTT button, there are 12 customizable commands at our fingertips. The start menu becomes a rare occurrence.
Also, I have the right side of the touchpad working like my d-pad and the left side running the screen scrolling. I now touch the actual screen much less, and have a reliable d-pad... really, it's sweet.
Anyway, I say it's worth it... don't back away just because the tilt scrolling feature doesn't work worth a darn. Even if it did, it's just not intuitive.
Thanks for the assuring responses!
It looks like I will be purchasing GScroll soon!
~J
Yeah, I don't use the launcher much, but in my experience it works pretty well; you do get the occasional accidental launch, but you're going to get that with anything, aren't you? The g-scrolling has never really worked for me, and I haven't tried it in a couple months. Finger scrolling is pretty easy, so I don't think it's all that necessary.

Actually, this brings up a question I've pondered and have somewhat answered which is "how 'finger-friendly' can a kaiser even be?" The touchscreen itself is designed for the stylus, unlike the iPhone which works best when touched by the pad of a finger and won't even acknowledge when I've inadvertantly used my stylus.
Basically, the kaiser is designed to work with the pinpoint touch of the stylus and can't truly be "finger friendly", right?
i would have to disagree oscar, if you want to make the kaiser more touch friendly, all you simply have to do is make larger icons, most of the new roms use the larger icons and are real touch friendly(ive gone without using my stylus for almost a week now).
the only thing which can really make kaiser not touch friendly is the size of the screen and number of pixels(you need more precision bcuz of this). Because the screen is so small, you cant really fit a lot on there, so to make it more touch friendly you can either make the icons larger and change the name of the phone from HTC TILT to HTC SCROLL(get it, lol, rofl, roflcopter, lmao, roflmao,)
or
i cant remember what i was gonna type, i will add something there when i remember.

the reality is the screen on the kaiser isn't as responsive as other more advanced phones out there, so even you make the icons bigger, there's still a chance that the device won't register the press exactly where you want it to. I've tried all the SIP's out there and I must say, the kaiser just isn't meant for typing onscreen without a stylus. it took me 2 and sometimes 3 times as long to type a text message with the SIP than with the hardware keyboard.
yes, you can make the kaiser 'finger-friendly' by making the icons bigger and adding the large start menus and all that, but the fact of the matter is, the phone was designed during the time when microsoft didn't understand that people didn't like using styli

You may be right there; especially typing is not very easy on the soft keyboard. However, I have never tried it on an #-Phone (I'm sorry, I was taught not to use swear words): I suspect that even the #-Phone's soft keyboard is much worse than a hardware keyboard.
Apart from typing text, my experiences with using the Kaiser without stylus are quite good. It greatly depends on what programs you use. Many, including the stock ones, have unresponsive buttons, like the phone dialer. However, I use Resco Contact Manager, which has a dialer without any delays, wonderful. Some SIPs have no delays either.
Oh, and I always set the screen to more responsive in the registry, that makes a huge difference.
