hi there,
after mail2web is not free anymore, and i tried to upgrade my account but failed because the website is just stupid, i thought about setting up my own exchange server. i understand that i would need a pc with windows server 2007 on it. my question is: once i have a server, is it just a matter of setting it up correctly?!
thanks,
G

as long as you have access to port 80 to your "exchange server" from the outside world, then yes.
Sounds so simple, I don't think it's that easy..
There are some open source 'exchange' servers floating around.

do you know what the steps are to setup your own Microsoft exchange server? i know i have to install the server edition of windows first, but than what? i don't even know what the process is called and what i have to do. i am not talking about step-by-step instructions, i can Google those. i wonder what its called in general, you know?!
thanks,

i am sure its not easy at all. i would like to understand what i am suppose to do and what its called. for example: "if you want to download your emails, you need a mail client such as outlook." once i have information like that, i can go ahead and google how its done!
thanks,
G
i actually think its called mail server...?!?!

umm, it's called installing and configuring exchange server for use with mobile devices. but there's a TON of stuff involved. yes I do know how, I have my own exchange server, and I've done it professionally for quite a few years. there are a lot of quides out there that will explain it in fairly simple terms.

Where for is port 80 needed? Its the HTTP protocol. It depends on which ports you open up, on on the services you run in your exchange environment. See the following list: http://www.petri.co.il/ports_used_by_exchange.htm

Why not just hire someone to do it... if you got $1,200 bucks to blow on your own exchange server then surely you have the money to pay someone to install it.

p.s. i still wont hire someone, i like to learn and be able to do it myself

Exchange 2007 SP1 can be freely downloaded from Microsoft in either 32bit or 64bit. This is the same as the retail CD:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/bb330843.aspx?wt.svl=2007resources
It is only officially supported in production environments as 64bit. Microsoft didn't have Hyper-V out when Exchange 2007 first appeared so if you wanted to test it in a virtual environment you had to use VMWare or another Hyper-Visor that supported 64bit guests. So Microsoft created a 32bit version of Exchange 2007 that would run under Microsft Virtual Server 2005.
The evaluation period is 120-days but it will continue to function after that, you just get a warning when you start the management GUI.
I downloaded it at the weekend and with my reasonably slick Hyper-V setup I had a working Exchange 2007 SP1 server in about 30-minutes......

Hi guys,
I've upgraded server at work to Exchange 2003 SP2. The server is fine (Thank goodness for that). However, my patched BA (WM5) is flacky with the settings that goes with the new push and pull email technology.
If SSL is checked when setting up Exchange server configuration on my BA using Active Sync, I get an error message that Server can not be reached. But then when I switch of SSL, all my contacts and emails are synchronized over WiFi successfully.
Another problem is that Server side security configuration (i.e. Enforce password on device set within Mobile Services on Exchange System Manager) is not reflecting on my PDA. Has anyone tried out this technology and what's your experience with so far?
I think you'll find you need Microsoft's Messaging and Security Feature Pack installed on the WM5 device, the only problem is that it's not available yet  We're waiting for just this also!
br/Bosseye
HA!
Now that would explain why all the security feature failed to work. Thanks for the information.
When is the update planned for released?
Cytrax
Also, if it works with No-SSL, then you're getting to the Default Website on your SP2, which means SSL is not set on that. It'll work on WiFi because you'll have Port80 (http) access to the server from your internal network. Will only work over GPRS if you've got Port80 forwarded to the same server, and not off to somewhere else, or blocked. Also beware that if you're hosting multiple sites (via http headers) on the same box as you're SP2 is, then http and SSL sites don't mix readily. Hope this helps. br/Bosseye.
Hey Bosseye,
That's really strange because I know for a fact that SSL Port 443) is configured to forward all to the Server. Port 80 is also set to forward to the same server but not really used.
Furthermore, I'm running the test from home so I'm not exactly on the work LAN. This creates more confusion for me because exchange is configured on IIS to use SSL and not HTTP. What do you think is happening here?
Thanks.
cytrax
Utter crap. Just seen that Microsoft's Messaging and Security Feature Pack isn't available till 2006, and then only via OEM. Sounds like Blackberry connect all over again
That's BS!
WTF were Microsoft thinking?
I guess it's back to the drawing board again for all developers on Wiki.
That's BS man!
Well - I was on the Microsoft webcast last week about the MSFP on 20 Oct and the presenter clearly said "anytime now". Without it, MS is failing the primary purpose of a wireless PDA - sync with the enterprise email - and that'll sure irritate their partners who want to shift more PDAs that do stuff other than consumer retro-fit sat nav for cars!
Hey Cytrax,
Difficult to say much about your current problem cos I don't have much info on your setup, but if you're sure that Exch is on SSL, you did remember to put the right certificate on the WM5 device after you upgraded it? However, if you've also got port80 forwarded then, it should work without SSL. Any more clues?
br/
Well, I've seen some slides for Exchange SP2 / MSFP for a talk at the Microsoft IT Forum in Barcelona, I quote from the slide:
MSFP will be rolled into Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU2
For devices shipping after AKU2, OEMs can pick up MSFP as part of normal AKU process
For 5.0 devices already in market, OEMs can use Image Update to deploy MSFP
For Windows Mobile 2003 SE devices already in market, OEMs can provide traditional ROM upgrades via ROM re-flash – complete upgrade to 5.0 required
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/business/strategy/wm5exch03.mspx
Devices and upgrades will be available sometime early next calendar year through our major device maker (OEM) and mobile operator partners. Please contact your device maker or mobile operators for more details regarding availability
I actually in a computer magazine last week that people would be able to download MSFT from Microsoft this month.
As things stand, I really don't know what to believe. However, I personally think they (Microsoft) would have no choice but to release it as a download for the public.
Well, despite what I heard then, I'm now hearing that Microsoft's route to market will be via OEMs and Mobile operators  , and that the release date will be Q1/2006 - which means 31st March 2006...
The same old stupid mistakes... just like Blackberry. Every minor advancement of mobile messaging just extracts more money... thereby minimising market adoption.
I refuse to subscribe to a strategy of lining the packets of the OEMs and the Mobile operators, as I pay enough in licences to Microsoft already...
Seriously, this is total BS.
My company has been waiting to get this technology for sometime now . But only to find out we can only get our hands on through most phone operators is just straight up wack.
I'm sure Wiki would be alive to derail all their money making plans. Fingers crossed!
If nothing has changed before the 14th November, then I'm off to the Microsoft IT Forum in Barcelona for a week, so I'll go ask Jason Langridge in person. He's helped me out a couple of times in the past and is a good lad

If you like PHP..
There's also another PPC webserver called PocketHPH which will let you run PHP scripts on the phone: http://mobileleap.net/hph
Pretty neet, free for personal use. I've messed with it before, but haven't reinstalled it since reflashing.. Looking at the site, they've apparently updated it with fopen() support, which kicks ass. Now I can write webapps for my phone which interact with my website (also PHP)

Be nice if this was useful with the cheap data plans from ex-Cingular, but alas, natted.. I kept thinking "It'd be nice to be able to pop a quick connection to my phone and look at some status" but just won't work.
Tried Hamachi?
There's a PPC Hamachi client which is free.. Then you get VPN capabilities, no more NAT, poof.. Access to your mobile from a computer! The only downside is that Hamachi has to be installed on the computer you're accessing from..

It's alpha, at v0.0.1..
Download link is a weird AJAXy popupish thing, so I can't grab the URL without some legwork, and I'm feelin' kinda mellow (read: lazy) right now.. but no registration required, just click the "Download Now" button on the right..
About to d/l and try it out.. Hope it works!

Hmm, VPN. Yeah, that could work. I wouldn't use whatever solution the above is, most likely, but a general VPN could do the trick as long as it reconnects on its own and such. Thanks for the suggestion!

you might hav to load some form of OS,
Windows Server 2003 / 2008
or Linux Cent OS
Or you can connect it to your computer and set up FTP server.
For example the FileZilla server for windows.
Don't forget to set up user password and path to your hard drive. You can transfer files between computers easily. Also you can set up port forwarding for FTP on your router so you can access the files from internet. Beware that data is not encoded during the transfer and can be seen by hackers.
P.S. I used to send hundreds of photos to my friend though the internet without compression.

How about putting it into a NAS, that way you should also be able to open the ports to access online? That way you don't need all this server stuff?

Ok so this is the scenario i have 2 computer at 2 different locations (Home and Office). On my main computer there is software which i would like to use on my another computer simultaneously. Like i am using the software on my home computer(Main PC) and brother wants to use the same software at our office, so i have created 2 users on my main PC and i would like my brother to use 2nd user to login remotely and use that software. Let me tell software has capability to be used at 2 place simultaneously.
Waiting for your help
Thankyou
Omg is that so much difficult, ,, no reply yet.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
umm, yeah its possible. all you need is a citrix server ( or similar ), i think there area few bits of software that do work on desktop machines. but i can't remember any of the top of my head. i know i have iraap for my mac, i will take a quick look for you now. But a quick warning if you wanting to do this over the internet. its going to be much harder working out port forwarding ETC over doing it in a lan enviroment. so you possible could use hamachi. ok i'll get back to you in a bit.
and yes this is quite an advanced thing todo. what your technically trying to do is create a server in which multiple members can connect to and do things simultaneously. so your not going to want to do this very much as it will cause a reasonable amount of strain on your system and certainly slow it down. if you are going to do this alot i would recommend investing on a cheap server
ok check this out, fire me off a pm if you need any help. i'm happy to help

just thought you might be intrested. i believe normally a windows machine will allow remote desktop connections, which means you can control the computer from another machine, very much similar as vnc. but a terminal server (citrix) allows multiple users to connect and run completely seperate sessions, but there are program that run the services needed to run terminal server witout a full blown server operating system.
just thought i would clear this up for you
I udnerstand that part, but as his PC is likely to be a standalone windows enviroment, and with him working on it, his brother will not be able to log in from the second location, as standard, due to that policy. I know there is a dll that can be hacked to allow it though. I have an understanding the RDP side, but he is using a windows machine not a terminal server/virtualised server etc, so from my perspective, his question was is it possible as is, not how do I make this possible by throwing money at it.

no these are completely free peices of software that require no dll hacking, they create there own server services that replicate terminal services.

ok well, what your are wanting to create is a terminal server, this is used alot in enterprise and it allows multiple user to connect to the same machine and use all the same applications and share data. But in enterprise they will use a machine called a thin client, this machine will boot straight from the network and connect to the terminal server. but you aren't going to want to buy a thin client so you are going to have to download another application on the second computer. but we will come to that later. what i think would be a good idea is if you were to read up on terminal services, terminal servers and maybe even thin cleints, as i think you do need to be able to understand the majority of the jargon that is going to be used. i would recommend you don't under take this task if you don't have quite abit of time or aren't confident in your IT skills
