Online server - Off-topic

hey guys i was wondering if i could convert a external hard to a online storage or something
like i have a 1.5 tb hd...i already have one for my needs and this one is just lying in dust so thought if i could make some good use of it thank you

you might hav to load some form of OS,
Windows Server 2003 / 2008
or Linux Cent OS

Or you can connect it to your computer and set up FTP server.
For example the FileZilla server for windows.
Don't forget to set up user password and path to your hard drive. You can transfer files between computers easily. Also you can set up port forwarding for FTP on your router so you can access the files from internet. Beware that data is not encoded during the transfer and can be seen by hackers.
P.S. I used to send hundreds of photos to my friend though the internet without compression.

Not sure how this would work as I have not tried it, nor do I have what I am going to suggest.
How about putting it into a NAS, that way you should also be able to open the ports to access online? That way you don't need all this server stuff?

WM6 remote desktop - set display resolution

Hi there,
i have installed Finster869's WM6_RemoteDesktop.cab, which is available somewhere in the forum here.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to set some advanced options, which are normally shown in the regular remote desktop application for Windows Desktop OS's?
- Display: Remote Desktop Size
- Experience (Desktop background, Menu animation, themes)
Thanks
Chris
I'm curious how to set these too. 640x480 seems to get forced when I connect, making Outlook unusable.
Yeah, me too. There's a file default.rdp where you can amend the value of the resolution but somehow it doesnt take effect.
I end up using VNC Viewer though.
Hi, if there's just another Remote Desktop Client allowing to fit my needs - I'd use it.
What are the best Clients (also commercial)? Where can I get that VNC Viewer?

Got another question though - Is it possible to connect to a WM2003 server console through Finster869's RDP client?
Logmein
Another option is logmein free. They have a plugin for WM that works on the Kaiser I have from ATT. Allows me to set resloution, screen size, etc, and it's free.
im too looking for a way to get remote desktop mobile to set a custom resolution
because in small resolution on wm6 rdm it just hard for me to navigate stuff.
can someone find a hack for this please.. dear hackers out there thanks.
Need a little help here....i've 4 computers in the house and it's all running VNC Server Enterprise Edition 4.2.2. I've downloaded VNC Viewer from the link above and run it on my Kaiser but when try to connect, it says "Unable to connect to the specified server!". I'm not sure what to set as i'm just bad with these network stuff.
Assuming i want to connect to my computer A name "Desktop". I would assume i just input the name Desktop to "Server" in the program and put in the password right? Or am i just so lost
Hope somebody can kindly guide me on this. Appreciate it.
Anybody? Would love to get it working in my TyTN II & i have up to 4 computers to remote into
Are you trying to get into them from the Internet or are you on your WiFi network?
If you are on your WiFi you will need to know the IP address of the machine you are connecting to unless you have DNS setup internally. Not sure if WM6 by default will detect Windows names.
If you are coming from the Internet then you will need to port forward your to each of your machines.
Guys, as usual, Wiki is your best friend. Do search it before asking - I've answered almost all the questions asked in this thread in the Remote Desktop Access Bible at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Access your desktop PC from your Pocket PC!
To make it short, in the Comparison Chart ( http://www.winmobiletech.com/122006PPCPCRemoteControl/PPC2PCRemoteRoundupTable.htm ), it's the "Resolution, zoom, color" group that you must check out; most importantly, the first ("Remote desktop resolution?") and the fifth ("Remote desktop resolution settable?") row. The latter even shows how you can actively change the resolution from the client.

Well....i would want to get connected via Home WiFi first. All the 4 computers are connected to the same router. I've tried putting in the computer IP address (ie: 192.168.1.101::5900) but it still says not able to connect. the ::5900 seem to be added in on it's own.

1, welcome to XDA-Devs
2, you mean is the address, your name / password saved? All of them, as is also explained in the chart of the Bible (did you check it out?????), in the "Login: l/p credentials definable, used (with RDP clients) and remembered? – an advantage particularly with RDP-based clients" and the "Server IP’s remembered?".
Please DO spend some time reading these Bibles / charts before asking questions!
no, sorry for the bad english. I mean, what about the security of the connection. Via PC i use a ipsec connection. When I use a normal connection it is possible to trace my login data and to get access to my server for other people.

RDP is a safe protocol - no cleartext passwords are communicated. BTW, you can also run RDP over a VPN connection to maximize safety.

How to share a folder on my Kaiser

This may seem like a weird request but I am looking for a way to share folders on my Kaiser. The reason for this is that my wife has a Wizard and I have set up a WiFi network between the two to play games together. I download software and games at work and then need to tranfer the the files to the Wizard.
Now I know that you can transfer it via bluetooth but that sometimes take quite long and since we have a wifi network thought that why not look for a way of utilizing it for the file transferring as well.
I have tried to Google the subject extensively but only got ways of sharing folders between my pc and the ppc's, nothing on ppc to ppc.
Any input regarding this would be appreciated.
I'm also interested in such a feature (so I don't think is weird )! My search on the subject has concluded that even though M$ has SMB server in Windows CE (after all, SMB is a Microsoft protocol!), only the client side is included in WindowsMobile
The closest thing I have managed to achieve is to use an FTP server on the kaiser, and Novell's Netdrive on the PC (http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/qna/999.html)
hope it helps...
hypest
due to limitations in the windows mobile network stack, network shares are not possible from windows mobile.
you can access and create remote mapped drives with resco explorer, vm net browser, and z2 pocketlan... among others.
ftp may be the only option other than a raw activesync connection or bluetooth/irda
jd
Where there is a will their has to be a way.
Thanks for the responce guys, really do appreciate it.
Surely there must be a way to achieve something like this, if there is one thing I have learned from these forums it has to be that just about anything is possible. I'm sure there as to be something we can do. I will not stop digging till I find a way.

I'm not to sure what you mean by the ftp server on the Kaiser. Do I create a folder on the Kaiser that acts as a ftp folder and then connect to that or is it still a ftp folder on a server somewhere else and then need internet connection to connect to it. Please could you tell me more about this.
Thanks in advance.

Yeap, here it is:
You can run an FTP server on the kaiser (like the free Mocha FTP server) which will let incoming network users to access a directory you specify... I have specified the whole root dir "\". Then, you can use any ftp client software on a desktop PC (or another kaiser of course) to access the FTP server that is running on your kaiser. Of course, you have to know the IP address of the server. Once you have verified that the kaiser is accessible and the files downloadable, you can use the Novell's Netdrive (free also) to create a virtual disk on the client PC that will actually use FTP! That way, any program on the PC can access the kaiser's files, just as normal filesystem files. Apart from the delays and latencies, the scenario works great. As a matter of fact, I use it within my development cycle, where I have a post-build action that copies my program's compiled executable directly to the kaiser.
I hope these made it more clear

Thanks a lot for the info, I'm definitely gonna play around with this. Will post back here with my results when I'm done.
Thanks again!!!
I have checked out Mocha FTP server and downloaded it. Will test it tonight, it looks like it will do the trick though. If I run Mocha FTP server on both ppc I should be able to copy files from one to the other without a problem.

of course in that case, you will need an FTP client on each device... but I guess that is the easy part...
I know at least one FTP client that is a file manager at the same time (TotalCommander... the one I use )
Perhaps there is a similar way to NetDrive, to map an FTP site onto a local path on the ppc so to be "visible" from any application, but I haven't used/tried any.

Definitely Worth Trying ..

Thanks you, it works like a dream. Tested it last night and at first didn't use my head. Every time I went into the FTP folder there was nothing, little red cross over the FTP connection at the top. I then created another ftp and still all I got was the little red cross( My wife then interrupted me for dinner, thanks. Cleared my head a bit) After dinner when back to it and deleted the one ftp and it was then when I saw you have to click "Connect", while clicked it and there was the folder that I shared on my ppc. Copied a couple of files and it works 100%. I use Resco Explorer 2007, works like a dream and its got a couple of other extra uses.
I'm not to pressed to have the client on both because I normally have all the stuff on mine and then copy it to my wife's. Won't do any harm to have it on both though. This is probably a little longer route than normal file sharing but it works perfect. Still going to try what you suggested above, will keep you posted.
Thanks again hypest.

Glad you're quite satisfied with this "solution"
I really hope though that someday a SMB server will come forth (free hopefully)!
Great irony: SMB server software does exist for Symbian!!! Symbian users can export a local dir, while WindowsMobile users CANNOT!!! And this (kaiser) is supposed to be a 800euro (in Greece) BUSSINESS phone! Shame...
In South Africa the Kaiser is about R8000,00 if you were to buy it cash.
I've got it on a MTN contract costing me R419,00 per month for 2 years. For that I only get the phone and 120 anytime minutes. (BIG RIP-OFF)
Anyway I will keep playing with this and will let you know if I get a breakthrough.
Thanks again for your input.

If you like PHP..
There's also another PPC webserver called PocketHPH which will let you run PHP scripts on the phone: http://mobileleap.net/hph
Pretty neet, free for personal use. I've messed with it before, but haven't reinstalled it since reflashing.. Looking at the site, they've apparently updated it with fopen() support, which kicks ass. Now I can write webapps for my phone which interact with my website (also PHP)
w00t!

Be nice if this was useful with the cheap data plans from ex-Cingular, but alas, natted.. I kept thinking "It'd be nice to be able to pop a quick connection to my phone and look at some status" but just won't work.
Tried Hamachi?
There's a PPC Hamachi client which is free.. Then you get VPN capabilities, no more NAT, poof.. Access to your mobile from a computer! The only downside is that Hamachi has to be installed on the computer you're accessing from..

I found this: OpenSSH ported to Windows CE!
http://www.codeplex.com/wiki/view.aspx?projectname=CESSH
It's alpha, at v0.0.1..
Download link is a weird AJAXy popupish thing, so I can't grab the URL without some legwork, and I'm feelin' kinda mellow (read: lazy) right now.. but no registration required, just click the "Download Now" button on the right..
About to d/l and try it out.. Hope it works!

Hmm, VPN. Yeah, that could work. I wouldn't use whatever solution the above is, most likely, but a general VPN could do the trick as long as it reconnects on its own and such. Thanks for the suggestion!

Home server help

Hi!
I'm looking to put together some kind of home media/file server and frankly I don't know where to start. Basically I want to be able to have a giant-ass HD with all my media on it that can stream to my TV/Stereo and my laptops can sync up files and get backed up. Would be great if I could get at it all remotely as well. I have a spare machine and am not too afraid of Linux, but also ready to buy Windows HS if that does the simple things I need for a couple-hundred bucks.
What do you guys recommend? Where should I start researching all of this? What do I need to look for in an HD TV so that I can easily access my files from it? Thanks a TON!!!!

From memory in the linux space you have MythTv which works fairly well, if you want windows you've got windows media centre which works very well. Given you are planning on doing file transfers may I suggest that you want 100mpbs wired+ or wireless N (large file copies are painful on wireless G)
I use Windows Home server and it's great. I used to run a Ubuntu server which was great to but was less compatible with stuff and took a lot more time.
Try them both out, you can get a windows 120 day trial.
Alternatively if you just want netowrk storage try FreeNAS. That's very good to.
If you need any help just PM me.
Just make sure that the storage harddrive is external so you can throw it out of the window if the police ever show up Myabe make a thermite cage or whatnot, hide the HDD in the wall or something. Maybe even get a high strength electromagnet in place on a switch or
Easiest of all:
Download and install truecrypt. Lock up that whole drive. Hell even add a hidden partition with Truecrypt. The power goes out and they have a fun of a time trying to guess a 37 character password
Setting up a ftp server on your desktop may be one solution.
I recently installed a Buffalo LinkStation like this one.
http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/linkstation/linkstation-pro-ls-xhl/
It is a network HD that can be accessed anywhere there is an internet connection. Since I am using it to share files with my independent contractors, the Buffalo Drive was a better option.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I've got some things to google now and a place to start, I appreciate the help and will let you guys know how it works out!
