My son wanted this phone so I bought it for him with a T-mobile sim card. I got this phone online and when I insert SIM it try to create a google account but can't connect server.
Do I need to buy a special service plan to use the phone?

i think if you wanna creat a google account you have to make sure you got good service signal like 3g.as far as unlock code you can get it from tmob for free as long as you have been with them for 90 days

It is not uncommon. It takes a bit before it works. I phone T-Mobile and asked them to push the account (G1 Internet) through.

just got a G1 with me. i dont have a t-mobile sim with me, but i know the first thing the phone goes to is to set up a gmail account. is there anyway round this?
would it work if i got a normal sim and just put credit on it, like say £10, and then the phone will just use up the credit to register with a gmail account? or do you have to absoloutely have some sort of special plan? i put in my blyk sim with an x-sim IV and it accepted the sim, thinking it was a t-mobile sim. but i dont have any credit on the sim so the connection times out, was thinking of putting some credit on the sim to see if it will connect?

if you absoloutely have to get a bloody t-mobile web'n'walk plan then that, in my opinion, is just as bad as the whol apple ipone thing, what a rip, i'll be selling the phone then.

Search is your friend. The phone does not require TMo.

well i used search and got nowhere. i found one thread about not needing a t-mob data plan but it requires access to the phones APN settings which i dont have
APN settings are available by pressing the menu button when in the setup. Can't remember if is right at the "Touch the android" or not. Just search the forum to get the needed APN settings for your carrier.

The way I did it without a data plan was to get someone that has a data plan and insert their Tmobile sim card in your G1. After you are able to log in, go into setting->data synch, and uncheck everything. Now you are able to use your Sim card and access the phone without the gmail authentication.
Hello, i got a G1 from my cousin, so i cant use it yet but im the 1st day,
i can still use the "camera, calculator and some of the apps, it happens that i wipe-out the datas. but now i discover to make an update that some1 instructed me to do this.

3. Rename it: update.zip
4. Place it on your SD card
5. Put SD card in phone. Reboot holding the Power and home buttons.

I'm not really of your scenario, you're using a t-mobile SIM, right? When I got my G1 I didn't have a t-mobile SIM, so all I could do is use emergency call until I unlocked it. Thing is, when you factory reset your SIM unlock is still retained, so I don't really see how this is possible...

If you're not on tmobile you need to purchase an unlock code, you can buy them on ebay for about $15/£10. They will ask for your IMEI. Never publicly post your IMEI. If you see one really really cheap, make sure they are going to give you the code, rather than tell you how to unlock.
After thatyou need apn settings for your carrier, press menu, enter those and sign in.

if your phone isnt unlocked and you dont have the unlock code, DO NOT PUT IN A FAKE UNLOCK CODE!!! YOU WILL PERMANENTLY LOCK IT!

btw, what will i do is i will call my cousin who gave me this G1 (coz he lives in USA )
I will ask him a favor to get me a "UNLOCK PIN" for the G1 then i will give my IMEI to him.
and hopefully will get the code after a days.
When it Success, what will i do next? i will need "APN Settings"? i dunno that yet xD.. where can i find the settings? and will i need to have wifi connection?

did your cousin originally have tmobile? what he can do is call tmobile and say that he sent his g1 overseas to his cousin as a present... jus tmake sure you tell him the IMEI number found on the back of the phone when u take out the battery first before he calls tmobile..
tmobile will give him the unlock code thru email within 24hours.
if he didnt have tmobile then the only thing u can do is buy the unlock code.preferably ebay.
a lot of apps use data. so apps that use internet and such will not work since there is no SIM in it. u need a sim with a data plan. but u can use the phone over wifi. no calls but download from market and browse the web.

Its unnecessary to bump unless you have the unlock code cuz there's not much we can help you with until then.
my dads house gets ZERO SERVICE but i am 99 percent sure that AT&T gets fair coverage there. i have tried to connect to AT&T's service but my sim card doesnt support it. i did some reasearch and have found that in order to register on AT&T's network, i need an unlocked sim card. only problem is, are there any charges that follow with doing that? and will T-MO just unlock it because i ask them too?

If you currently have T-Mobile then you need an AT&T Sim card to place in your G1. When you boot it will come up saying Unregistered Sim and will ask for a SIM Unlock code. After you enter the code you will be able to use the AT&T Sim card in your G1. You will NOT have data unless you change the APN's. Contact AT&T for that information or search for AT&T APN information.
If you ask T-Mobile for the SIM unlock code they are likely going to ask you to clearify. There is a sim lock (which protects your text messages and contacts) and it is programmed in your sim card. Then there is the NETWORK lock (or subsidy code) which will allow your phone to be used on almost any network. You need the SUBSIDY lock. Not the sim unlock.
To qualify for the SUBSIDY code for T-Mobile contact them by calling the toll free number. Do not call them from the phone because they will need the IMEI.
1) You need to be on a non-prepaid plan for at least 90 days of active and uninterrupted service. If yes, go to 2.
2) Call T-Mobile Customer Care from landline and give them the IMEI of the G1.
3) If you give them a valid reason for having it unlocked then they will submit a request and you should get your subsidy unlock code in about 72 hours via e-mail. BTW... telling them you want it unlocked so that you can use a competitors service is probably not the best request.
4) Once you've aqcuired the subsidy code, boot up your G1 with the AT&T SIM inside and enter the code provided in your e-mail from T-Mobile.
5) Contact AT&T for the APN information or find it here on XDA (search).
6) Enter the APN information by:
On home screen press MENU
Go to SETTINGS
Go to WIRELESS CONTROLS
Go to MOBILE NETWORKS
Go to ACCESS POINT NAMES
Press MENU
Select NEW APN
Fill in the blanks
You will never have to enter the subsidy code for your G1 again (even after a wipe or flashing to another ROM.)
NOTE: If you can't get the code from T-Mobile there are services on the web that will unlock for a fee. These usually range about $20 or so. There is no cost from getting it from T-Mobile should you qualify. Good luck.

ok so i can just call at and t and tell them that i would be interested in getting my phone unlocked because at my dads house t mobile doesnt get service, but they do, and i want to connect to their service?
also should i just visit the closest at and t store to do this?
if i have an at and t sim in will my billing and account info stay they same? like my plan wont change and t mobile would still be my mobile network even thoughi have an at and t sim card?
and i know i am planning on telling them that i am going overseas for 2 weeks for a vacation. that seems to work with these dudes.

Is this a serious question? If you were AT&T would you let someone use your network for free?
You might be able to use a pay-as-you-go AT&T SIM card in an unlocked G1. Not 100% sure about it so don't quote me on that.

and you might be able to get a month by month contract with them (not sure of their available plans) either way google should show you the way

Is it possible to unlock a G1 either rooted or unrooted without having to obtain a code from T-Mobile [I was quoted £15]?
There are people on eBay offering it as a service by sending them my IMEI number, are they doing this using an application which generates the unlock code based on the IMEI, if so then does anyone know where you can get the app to do this please?
I bought my G1 last month, unlocked for ATT. When you boot up the phone with a new SIM card, you put in ATT APN settings to use it with an ATT SIM card. When I installed Cyanogenmod, it automatically detected my SIM card, I'd try Cyanogenmod.

That is horrible information. It doesn't work that way.
But to answer the question either it's t-mobile or one of those people on ebay.
Its to easy bro, go threw T-Mobile via their chat tech support, tell`em you want the unlock code for your cell, theyll ask you for some info and in a few days theyll email you the info. I had this big story I was gonna tell them that I was going to Mexico on vacation and wanted to use my phone over there lol but they didnt ask me anything just the info they needed for the phone.

basically i want to get a tmobile prepaid payasyougo plan with 1000 minutes for $100. i was looking for gsm phones and found the G1. i would like to know if i buy a new G1 on ebay for like $100 will i be able to just put the tmobile sim card inside and activate the phone? or do i need to get a tmobile sim card with a data plan on it? basically i want to know if i can use the G1 for just voice calls on a prepaid sim card. i also would like to know if i can use the wifi to connect to my router, or is that blocked unless i have a data plan? are any features in the G1 disabled if i put in a sim card without a data plan? i plan on using the G1 for only voice calls and browsing the web on my home wifi. can this be done on this phone? thanks for your help in advance

Btw, I wouldn't pay 100 for a G1. I got mine for 15 bucks used.
if your g1 isnt rooted than no, the stock g1 wont let you sign in without a plan unless you borrow someone's sim card set it up and then change out sims, what you want to do is get one, root it (probably need someones card to do this) flash a rom (many are far better then stock) and when it comes time to sign in it wont madder what tmobile sim car you have in there. and if you unlock the phone you can put in just about any sim card (rooting will not unlock the phone) good luck! oh by the way if you cant borrow a card, try to buy one that is allready rooted for you, if you check ebay you'll be sure to find one, hell i sell some on ebay that are ready to go. oh and yes you can use wifi.

The thing I posted above does NOT need root...
You may have to downgrade, but that doesn't need root...
Try the following...on the emergency dialer type <enter>reboot<enter>
If it reboots congrats, the wifi thing will work
If not, you need to downgrade....but don't worry its not too hard
