charging phone with usb extender - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

This is probably a dumb question but, I was wondering if the phone gets charged to the fullest while using a usb extender plugged into the htc power outlet and then from that to the original htc usb cord? Also I read that it is ok to use an official motorola wall charger. Will the phone get charged to the fullest with that? Just trying to see how i can make my battery last longer at it usually only lasts from 10am-4pm and i have to use it again.

Not really sure what you're asking here. If the charge indicator is showing on your device, however you've got it connected, it will charge until the battery is full. You can tell this by the LED 'circle' showing constantly.
I don't know about the Motorola charger. You'll have to check the output. You need DC 5v @ 1A. I would be surprised if there is a vast difference between devices. The voltage is the main issue. If the ampage rating is higher, the battery will still only draw what it needs.
Battery only lasting 10am - 4pm... you must be a heavy user! I occasionally can flatten mine in a day (6am - 8pm), but very rarely. Usually I can get two days out of it.

I think I have a lot... though compared to some probably not! I have about 20 third-party apps on it. I don't do many calls, but I use the apps a lot during the day, especially RSS Hub, Opera, Word and Excel. Nothing major really.
You'll probably get better power management from a custom ROM, if you haven't got one installed already.

yeah roms scare me as you cant find a "hard spl" for the alltel version of my phone. or nobody really talkes about roms on the alltel touch pro

Anyone has any idea why do we need to turn on "disable usb charging" ?
Settings -> Power -> Advanced
[ x ] When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC
In what situation?
One thing that I can think of ... is to preserve the battery to have a good condition by only charging if you have "enough time". That means, to charge until 100% and beyond.
Any more valid / good reason?

In my case, i thin is better to make three or four completes cycles of charge/discharge, so for the moment i use this option to prevent charging while i connect to PC to install or trasfer something....after complete discharge, i charge full...

I reckon its so you can plug it into a unpowered USB hub which is near its limit of how much power it can supply...

i think it might have something to do with the amps/volts, i'm not a scientist as you could already tell, but i do know that you shouldn't use a motorola charger to charge an htc product. i used a razr charger to charge my dash once and it killed the battery pretty well. so i figure you shouldnt use a non-approved charger to charge your device, be it via laptop or any other charger that didnt come in the box
My bet is that this is about battery life. I think that these batteries do best (live longest) if they go through complete charge-discharge cycles at least every 30 days.
I plug my TyTn into my computer when I am in the office and, unlike ACtiveSync, the charge always works!
I vote for the portable use theory as well, so you don't drain the battery on a laptop or unpowered hub that can't supply the additional current.

I'm with you on this one. Current gen batteries don't need to be cycled so much for optimal performance. However, charging your phone via USB will drain your PC's battery more quickly if you are on the go.
The Kaiser draws a lot of current. Even when charging by USB I have seen the battery level dropping.
I have seen quite frequently USB ports being disabled due to too high current draw, making the connection unstable. If this was a problem this option would prevent it.

That's good stuff especially the Wiki on them. I use a lot of lithiums at work and play. Bottom line, don't run them flat, ever, that's the only thing that will ruin them quickly. Most devices have protection circuitry to prevent this by shutting down. When you get to this point the battery should be charged ASAP because the small amount of drainage in the device will take the battery past the critical low point if left in this very low state for any length of time (say more than a few days).
Cycling really doesn't do much for lithiums, their total capacity decreases from date of manufacture slowly over time, weather you use them alot or not. This is unlike other batteries.
Best storage state for lithiums is 50%, not full. But in a phone, best rule is to just top them up whenever possible, plus you never know when you are going to get that marathon phone call
As a few others have alluded to, this is used when you're tethering on the go. WM5 / 8525 doesn't have this switch, so when tethering via USB on the 8525, it will literally suck the life out of my laptop battery.
Glad to hear that this switch was added in WM6 / Kaiser.

Summary (for li-ion batteries, as in Kaiser):
1. Avoid full discharge; partial discharge/charge cycle is better. However, a full charge/discharge cycle once every 30 times is useful to keep battery gauge calibrated correctly (doesn't really help longevity, but prevents erroneous gauge from forcing early retirement of the battery).
2. Avoid prolonged storage at full charge and/or high heat (optimal charge is ~40%).
3. Avoid high rates of charge or discharge. Presumably the charge rate is already set at an acceptable rate by the manufacturer; as for discharge, it probably can't be helped if you need to run some ultra-high load applications on the phone. One thing this confirms: it is good to charge the battery using the USB; the possibly lower voltage available during the USB charge is helping, not hurting, the battery. So definitely, the "do not charge when plugged in" option is only to save your laptop battery, not to help the phone battery.
As said already in this thread, its so you can connect to a non-powered usb hub or a laptop usb port that can't supply enough.
WM devices normally detect supplied power and go into charge mode before they are polled by the PC/Laptop via Activesync for data transfer. If the charge system pulls the port down then data transfer is disrupted.
When tethered to a laptop and the laptop is running on battery, you may want to disable charging to conserve the laptop's battery.
This is the answer I got from batteries4less where I bought a replacement battery for my 8525.
You should generally charge your battery every night. It is not good to do
it continually during the day. It will wear it down faster. Thank you

By the way.....shameless plug: I ordered a battery late on thursday afternoon and received my replacement battery on saturday and installed it in the phone. On monday I bought the Tilt 8925 and then emailed that I bought a new phone and asked them if I could exchange it for a Tilt 8925 battery and the next email I received from them about an hour or so later said the new battery was on the way and to send the 8525 battery back in that package.
These guys will get my battery business from now on.
Years ago i had a t-mobile dash also known as an htc excalibur, and i would use it to tether to my computer for 6 to 8 hours a day as a high speed modem and low and behold, it burnt out the battery. I bought a new battery and switched to Kaiser OS that had an option to disable usb charging and never had a problem after that... Now if you only connect to a computer to transfer a few files back and forth every onle in a while then there probably wont be a problem because that is not going to drain your battery very fast so it will only charge every once in a while and that is ok. But when you tether to a computer to use your phone as a high speed modem it takes ALOT of battery power. I saw a post in a different thread here on xda that said that when your battery reaches 100% that it stops charging. Yes that is correct. But even though the battery will stop charging at 100%. As soon as it drops 5 or 10 % is starts charging again and when you tether your phone as a modem it will drop 5 or 10% within minutes so your phone will basically be charging nonstop which is defiantly not good for a battery and that my friends is what the disable usb charging is for.
Just as an added statement for those of you that disagree with what i have said. Try it yourself and see what happens. Tether your phone to your computer as a modem and surf the net, and play games, and download stuff for 6 or more hours a day. I bet in just a few weeks or months you will be replacing your battery too.
Reason to turn off phone charging when connected to PC
I installed "Syncois iOS & Android Manager FREE" to back up my Android phone data to my PC. The program would not work if my phone was charging when connected to my PC, it told me. So, I had to turn that charging option off. Outside of that, I will always have my phone charge when connected to my PC. Hope this helps!

USB Charging So Slow Almost Not Worth It

Is anyone else having this problem?
Any work around to having it actually charge the battery up?
it uses electricity faster than its recharging its crap! ive never known any device do this. When im low on battery and have it connected to my computer i have to switch it to the mains for 30 mins. Its terrible, bad design fault
I have the same problem with my Toshiba G900 (WVGA too). Very slow on USB, but normal fast at standard charging or car charging. USB is very bad for this at all.
it really depends on what you're doing with the phone, its unlikely to charge when busy, its a lot faster at charging than my old advantage, im actually impressed!
have you made sure that you've not ticked turn off charging whilst connected to a computer?

Does it even charge at all via USB when the X1 is on idle? If it does, how long does it take from low to full?
I left my X1 idle on USB for 6 hours, it was nearly flat when I put it on and after 6 hours it was still 1 bar below full. Whereas my LG Viewty fully charged in about 2 hours. My Universal only takes about 3 hours
So in my case, comparing the three phones, you can see where my dissapointment originates from.

True tho, point taken.....dissapointment level aleviating.....slightly....
After my phone beeped saying the battery was low, I plugged it into my USB hub (which has a mains supply). An hour later I removed the cable and the phone beeped again.
At least with my P990 I was able to gain some charge, it seems like with the X1 it just stops the battery running down.
Try it after Softreset again. I had this problems with an old ROM on my G900 too. After some time it did not charge. Softreset fixed it.
also yall are forgettin that it's a different kinda battery in the x1 compared to other phones it's ising a li-po compared to a li-ion (which is in most other ppc phones) it charges slower via usb because it's tryin to keep from exploding any extra surge that the usb gets could cause your phone to explain
the li-po is more likely to explain given the way it's built
when you use the wall chargers and car chargers the connection are ment fron rapid rechargin of the device unlike the usb which is for data transfer mainly
when you think about the charge time just think about how long it actually takes for your phone to run out of battery life from what i heard it's close to like 1.5 to 2.5 days compared to normal ppc phones that last probably a day at the most with out recharge

Err... this is not true for TP. TP lasts about 2 days on average from normal daily usage and it doesn't have problem charging via USB. Given that the port used is USB 2.0 not 1.1 or below. Took about 2~3 hours from nearly flat to full charge if I remember correctly. I have to try again just to make sure. But definitely not taking 6 hours.
I would've thought that X1 shouldn't have any problem with charging since the battery is only like 150mA more than TP. Also, if it's charging faster from the AC adapter, the same result should be expected when charging from USB port. Doesn't matter the type of battery used. Unless if X1 somehow limits the charging current on purpose when PC USB port is detected. Even though USB 2.0 is actually capable of giving out 1.5A maximum. Try to soft reset it after charging for about 2~3 hours. See if the battery gets fully charged. Some TP users are experiencing this issue as well when the battery meter only updates to fully charged after doing soft reset. Experienced users might want to try and measure the current drawn when charging via USB 2.0 port.

On my xperia if i put it in sleep mode, it charges no problem using USB.
the advantage used to charge slower from a usb port, that is until someone found out that the standard ac charger had a short across two of the usb pins, and with a quick mod of a usb cable charged quickly from the usb on a computer
however my x1 charges the same from usb or mains, I use the same cable, but can't see what difference that makes.
there are three conditions that affect charging speeds, whether device is on or not, off charges much faster, whether screen is on or not, screen off charges faster, whether theres good radio signal, if like at home, reception is dodgy it can really draw a lot of juice.
Just for comparison sake, I did a test on my TP just to confirm. Charging via USB 2.0 while it was on idle with screen turned on, from 4% to 100% it took about 2.5 hours and its battery feels warm.
Ok lets clear out some things.
A standard PC USB socket can provide maximum 500mA (milli-Amperes) Current at 5 Volt. Ideally that means that a battery rated at 1500mAh (milli-Amperes-hour) can be charged around 3 hours (minimum). Now, subtract the current that the xperia needs while operating and you will get how many milli-Amperes are left for charging.
Of course in order to know how many current the xperia needs to operate you need to connect an ammeter in series, also keep in mind that current needs change depending on usage (wifi, 3g, bluetooth etc).
So in essence if you USB port is not very good and can't give fully 500mA and the xperia needs a great amount of current to be on, then the charging time can be quite long. A simple formula could be:
xperia_Battery_mAh / (USB_Current - xperia_Current)
Now the mains charger is rated at a greater value than the USBs 500mA. Actually I don't own yet an xperia (waiting patiently to arrive), so I don't know how much current the charger can give. Can someone see what is the rating of the charger?
From other devices I own (that can charge through USB) I've seen that their chargers are rated as high as 2 Amperes. Obviously these devices never draw so much current, it is just a failsafe or it was more cheap for them to bundle a charger like that. But they could draw 800mA of current which the USB port is unable to do so.
Keep in mind that while charging with USB might be longer, generally it can be safer for the battery (longer battery life and more charge/discharge cycles), although I am not so sure about this with excessive charging times in a USB port.

How to prolong battery life?

after upgrading to wm6.1 my xda's battery runs out comparatively faster then when it was running wm2003.

1) Minimize the use of wireless components: turn InfraRed (receive beam) and BlueTooth off when not using them.
2) Camera and full-screen graphics (games!) are a battery drain.
3. The OK button doesn't kill programs, use a taskmanager that doesn't allow them to stay alive in the background
4 animated gif's drain the battery, even when running invisible in the background
5 himalaya's are relatively old devices, lots of us still use the original batteries. Buying a new battery can make a world of difference
6 personally I have no problems with my battery, although it's still the original one, quite the contrary. It takes me an awful long time even when I deliberately drain it. When I'm working on my desktop computer, the Hima is always connected. During a 2 week holiday I had to recharge twice.
7 use a battery meter software to show you if it's fully charged.

the himas are very old devices, probably the second ever made Pocket pc, we should be happy they can run WM6.1 and hopefully WM6.5 too

i usually do all the things that you suggested in your posts like closing all the programs using a task manager and disabling the infrared beam recieving option etc.
but i guess the problem is i play a lot of heavy usage games.
my battery usually drains out in max 3 days of normal usage.
one more question: does it make any difference if i charge the hima when my pc is turned off? does it cause any harm to the battery or is the same as charging it when pc is turned on?
the hima wont charge if the Pc is off, to Charge it better, connect it via your Wall charger
Sorry Ather, for a change I have to disagree with you. Of course, when you turn your computer off using a mains switch, there's no 5V on the USB ports for more time than needed to drain the capacitors. But when you turn it off using the Start > shutdown or the "power" button on front of your computer (actually doing the same thing) lots of computers still leave 5V on the USB ports.
The "hardware" power button is software configurable, mine is configured as hibernate. After pressing it, Windows still responds by shutting down programs and processes and storing settings. So this same "hardware" power button needs to have power to understand you when you want to turn your computer back on. Lots of USB keyboards have an "on/off" button. That wouldn't work if it was a real on/off switch.
In the DOS era all power switches were still real hardware. In the early days of multitasking this has lead to lots of disasters by people forgetting to save their day's work that was still active in the background.
It is however good to watch the charge led on the Hima carefully. My Dell only keeps power on the on/off switch, the two PS2 ports, the two primary USB pots and the ethernet connector. The HP's I know give power to all USB ports all the time, no brand clones have different approaches.

That is a relatively long battery life. My own hima, now five years old, only lasts one day. It still runs on the original battery.

Same here... My battery also last for only one day. In addition it turns off when the battery is 20%. Earlier it was 5%. Is it because the battery is bad or Is it possible to configure this level in the registry?
Unfortunately, i dont have a wall charger for my hima. and therefore i can only chrage it via pc. i have lots of spare chargers though, so if someone can please specify how many volts and amps (the important details) the charger is, it would be great.
and with normal usage my xda runs for about two days.

much the supply can provide
the output voltage is 5V
the output amperage is 1 ah or 1000 mah
if you charge ur device with usb that mean 5V and 500 mah

[Q] Serious battery depression - I need expertise!

Wondering if any of the Hero-ologists here can help.
I have a CDMA Hero, running the most current radio, kernel, etc. Currently I'm running the CM6 nightly with JIT enabled, (Linpack is ~4.9, Quadrant ranks higher than average Motodroid, FTW)
Anyway, I've had the issues below for months now. Nothing changes with kernel, ROM, anything.
From the moment I bought my Hero it's run exceptionally hot. I've come to believe that perhaps it's simply due to the fact that I live in a 1X area, averaging about -100db signal. Battery has always gone extremely fast as well, but that's pretty common.
I have two batteries and an extra charger, and generally I keep a rotation throughout the day, and often I use all 3 batteries. I'm a pretty heavy user (hah, sounds like a drug).
Alright, so here are my symptoms, besides the rapid battery drain:
-Sometimes when my battery states it is somewhere around 20-30%, it will suddenly restart, then it will say it's around 3-7% and to connect my charger.
-Randomly, occasionally, my phone will simply give up charging. This happens plugged into USB, my car charger, or the factory charger.
-When it gives up charging, sometimes the light will stay orange anyway.
-Usually, the LED will instead switch to a rapid-flash of orange/green/2 seconds/orange/green/2 seconds...and so on....and it most certainly is not receiving any power.
Usually I just tolerate the issue. When it happens, I'll swap the battery and it works fine, charges fine. Here are the things I've tried that don't seem to make a difference:
-Battery wipe
-Full battery conditioning
-Ensuring I'm plugged into a USB 2.0 port on the PC
-Swapping to the wall from USB
None of these things work. But it happens with any of my 3 batteries, and when I swap with whichever battery is charged, it fixes the problem.
A bit more storyline here, for record:
When I first got my phone, the battery went so fast, I contacted Sprint. Unfortunately there's no service center for about 120 mi from where I am, and I was too stupid to buy Best Buy's Black Tie when I bought the phone.
They said to go to the local dealer and see if they'd give me a new battery. The local dealer is run by a complete *****, and Best Buy looked at me like I was crazy.
I bought the phone in February, and I believe it's under a 1 year warranty, so perhaps Sprint would swap it for me. I would of course have to unroot my phone, which I'm fine with. But the litmus paper is slightly smudged, and I'm not sure what Sprint would say if they got the phone that way either.
Anyway...that's my story. If anyone has any input, I would be greatly appreciated.

Note that because of the spare charger, normally this isn't a real issue. But I fear things may get worse, and just in case, I'd rather fix this issue now than later. And being that tonight I left my charger and spare batteries at work, my battery officially depleted and I have no phone until tomorrow. And it's like having your crack-pipe taken away.

Hi all, I have never experienced this kind of wierd issue with any of my past phones. When i would play games or say watch a movie on phone,( my last one was Htc One X), i would usually connect it to a charger so that the battery keeps charging slowly, and it worked with each of my past and even my gf's galaxy s4. But with XZ, the battery keeps continuously discharging. Anyone got any fix for this? With the kind of weak battery XZ has, it is a highly needed basic feature. I even tried with a 2A S4 charger, but to no effect. I even tried the modding of usb cable by shorting the data wires (the green and the white wire cut and insulated), still no improvement.
I have been using existenz v1.5.5 kk, and i can see that there is an option of fast charge in performance control. But turning it on doesnt make any change. Does the kernel not support fast-charge?Can anyone share any insights? It feels stupid to have to lay the phone down letting it to charge by itself olny to get all discharged within 3 hours.

Charging is really a problem for XZ. Anyways, shorting the data wires won't help, try switch to a stronger cable that's capable of transferring larger amount of electricity when you're using the 2A charger (many of those cables aren't able to transfer enough amount of electricity).
Also, when your phone is really fully loaded and became very hot, just as when you use it for navigation in your car under the sun, the charging speed will decrease (I don't even know why). The charging speed decreases either when you're touching the screen or when it's hot.
Anyways, try better cables first and see if it helps. The docking system is also likely to charge faster.

I used a whole bunch of cables. The HTC one actually works as an anti-charge cable lol, it eats up battery even when the phone is left on charge unused. I had high hopes with the S4 cable, which turned out to perform same as the stock Sony one. Guess I have to live like this..

Sorry to hear that the cables you tried all failed. Did you try using the docking system? They should perform better though.
I mentioned switching cables because I had a "anti-charge" cable before, lol. I did some research afterwards and finally got some 22AWG cables and they really made a difference. It's said that they're capable of transferring 3A electricity and it's really different from all other cables I've used. They're just about $2 each because they're handmade, I can give you one if you wanna have a try.
Also, charging by AC power should be better than using the power of cars' lighter. I'm using my docking system with the SONY stock charger w/ ac power. Never disappointed me.

I mentioned switching cables because I had a "anti-charge" cable before, lol. I did some research afterwards and finally got some 22AWG cables and they really made a difference. It's said that they're capable of transferring 3A electricity and it's really different from all other cables I've used. They're just about $2 each because they're handmade, I can give you one if you wanna have a try.

I flashed Carbon KK rom and the charging is comparatively better. Atleast it doesnt drain while i use the phone for browsing etc, connected to a wall charger. But if I play games or watch videos on speaker, it does to some extent. I bought one more charger, a Nokia made 750 maH charger (AC 20N) which again is wierdly same in performance compared to both the 1.5A Sony and 2A Samsung. What I think is as you said, the wire makes all the difference. A 2A non detachable is the need of the moment for XZ it seems..

From my experience usually Google Play Services is the culprit for hot phones and battery drain. What I did when on stock 4.4.2 was i uninstalled updates for the services and my battery life improved by a lot. Although it does come with the downside that some apps like youtube won't work with the older version (easy work-around by using chrome to go to youtube instead =P)
Since I own that phone, I've been facing the same problem of slow charging speed (actually discharging when using some applications)
The more problematic case in when I'm using the phone in car when driving even if I'm using a powerful car charger (Anker).
In the past I also have tested number of diffferent charger and cables (including original Sony car charger) without seeing *any* improvement.
Recently I've decided to took time to make a comparison test with a colleague Nexus 5. We have connected it in my car to the same charger and used in the exact same configuration (Waze navigation app running) for a one hour drive on the same work->home daily path where I use usually my Xperia.
The measured results have shown for the Nexus a 30%/hour increase of battery level opposed to the Xperia 10%/hour decrease I'm facing every other day.
Later, using "Android tuner" application battery monitoring tools, I've been able to measure that, even when using a 2.2 Amp capable charger, the Xperia isn't able to "suck" more that 700/800mAmp input current most of the time.
To go further I've asked in the french forum where I've posted those figures if any people had been successful to have the Xperia battery level increasing in the same configuration. I have got only answers of other people acknowledging having the same problem as myself.
Then I've also asked people in the "accessories" section of a car owners (Toyota) vehicle forum: found people having the same issue are also owning Sony models.
Also asked another colleague who who owns a Xperia model Z1: ditto.
I definitively start to think that there is a defect is a in the battery charging regulation system of the whole Xperia range.
BTW: I will be very interested if anyone using an Xperia Z in car with navigation application running without those issues could post details about his charger brand and model, and how much battery percent/hour increase he his actually getting with that setup.
