Messeging folder copy after hard reset

Hi,
i have XDA IIi, i didnt use any backup software to backup my text messages, i copied the "Messeging" folder located in the Windows folder to SD Card, i hard reset the unit, then copied that folder back.. i know this alone would not work, and it didnt, non of the text messeges were restored..
what should i do to restore them back, cuz this is the only backup i have.
thanks guys..
Not possible -> from what i heard
you know, from what i studied and read in former forums, i came to the assumption that a method of backing up your sms messages etc is not possible, and highly unfeasable:/ sorry to blow your bubble mate, but i'd luv to be able 2 back it up too....i have around 2.5K messages on my nokia 6600 which really really really need backing-up to my XDA2i, and guess what....i've been crying for the past month that i can't do it!!!
but of course, if anyone else has any ideas or clues then that'd be amazing really just great
if not then i'll just continue cryin in my little corner...perhaps re-write all those msg's again in sm notepad or whatever..... but 2500 is a lot:/
use x-backup (think thats wot its called) and do a total backup to an SD card
this had always kept my sms's, along with every other setting on the fone.
then take ur sd card out after you've done a restore or you're xda will crash

PIM.VOL reader? Anyone?

I had a old HTC wiz, and saved the pim.vol for my contacts, is there anyway i can open this file on my computer to get the numbers and names? i know i can just backup my curent and then move the file to my new phone and bam i have them but it would just be easier for me to merge them on my computer then me having to write all 700 numbers and names down.
You might be able to use pim backup for this (Stickied at the top of the Development and Hacking forum).
Use it to back up your current PIM.vol and then copy over your old.
Then run the restore feature of pim backup and only add new records don't delete the old ones.
You'll probably have to do some cleanup work if there are any duplicates though.
Hope this helps.
Unforetunately I'm not aware of a way to do this on your PC. If you find one please share.
I know this is kind of old but i stumbled across it and wanted to give an answer to what i did. This isn't the nicest way, but if you open the pim.vol with notepad (be sure to check the 'word wrap' option) and search for one contact, you will find them in the middle of all of the garbled stuff. You can then copy each one out of there.
thx billie for this suggestion... it is messy but better than nothing!!!

TyTN 2 Broken Screen

Hi guys,
So last night I dropped my phone. The screen is totally messed up and unuasable. However I really need to save some of the text I have on it. Ideally I would like to use some kind of remote desktop application which allows me to view my phone's screen. I can connect to activesync, but syncing doesn't work 100% (it has never). I can explore the device though. So are there any files that contain my texts? And how do I transfer my contacts?
Bottom line: I want all my texts and all my contacts!
I really hope you guys can help!
(search!!! search!!! search!!!)
(wow after typing that word so many times, it stops looking like a word...weird huh?)
anyway, i have NEVER personally tried what i am about to recommend but from the numerous threads about this topic right here on xda (hence the suggestion to search vigorously), i gather "mymobiler" will suit your requirement for a remote desktop application for the pocket pc...
NEXT, if mymobiler works for you, then look for "pimbackup" right here on xda (hence the suggestion to search vigorously) and install it on your device and run it to back up your contacts and texts in a form easily suited for restoration to another device (the restore operation is also achieved from pimbackup)
FINALLY, further searching will reveal to you that some files in the root of your device's storage contain your contacts, texts, and emails (i believe "pim.vol" is one of those files). however, i'm not sure if overwriting the pim.vol (and other such files) on your new/repaired device will work without problems if your intent is to restore your texts and contacts by this method...you should use pimbackup instead
c'mon dude! search is your friend!

SMS backup software

Hi,
After some advice (after a few hours trawling the entire site btw!).....
I need to backup my sms messages to pc and was trawling for software. Thought I'd found just what I need in Power SMS, but it seems to crash midway through doing an export to csv format. I can backup in the proprietary format (just like i can with SPB backup) but not to a "standard" format like csv
Can anyone offer a suggestion please? Would prefer not to pay for a piece of software that is (seemingly) not being developed (like Power SMS) again, but will do if I have to.
Thanks in advance!
If you really do your search, you'd have found PPCPimBackup .. and there're some great tips on restoring (and getting the 6.1 conversation model) back.
I have never tried any of these, but here are a couple from a discussion in another forum that I frequent.

Like I said, I did - and after renaming the ZIP file to get to the pbm file within, the format was proprietary and neither text nor hex editor could extrapolate anything meaningful (i.e. no RegEx I could find to pull into a db). Perhaps if you looked at my length of membership, you'd have adjusted the assumption that I hadn't searched properly.
Thanks to the others - am looking at Mobile Express and godswmobile.........
Update: Efficasoft Mobile Express works a treat - thanks for the advice denco7

I apologize for being unnecessary harsh, and for not reading thoroughly what being asked for.
Now thanking you for testing and Denco for tips, though I'm one that keeps all my stuff mobile, on spare SD and never really use the sync to PC, as the PC at work is locked and it's something I use 90% of my time. Been doing that since my Symbian time

can android decode pim backup files?

I'm migrating from the 6.5 roms to an android rom (Eclair Dark Theme) and wanted to ask if there was an app that can decode the PIM backup files so I can extract my contacts and messages, etc. Anything out there?
Moved as not ROM Development..
Oh ok sorry. either way hope someone can help ^_^
Actually I'm afraid you won't be moving to an Android ROM, you get to keep your present ROM and run Android off SD card, since we're not able to install Android in ROM yet.
Not sure if you can migrate your PIM data to android, but since you won't actually be losing them when you run android, I don't think it will be a big problem.
I'm sure there will be a way of doing it, just never really had that much data I'd be willing to trust to Android ports yet
i'm not sure if android reads pim backup files...but lets rephrase the question. i believe the intent is to get one's contacts and messages imported on to android?
if so, i THINK you can synch your windows mobile with google synch...and then boot into android and synch android with google synch to pull the contacts onto your android installation. maybe google synch can work for messages as well? i haven't tried any of this but i would imagine it should be possible, because android and google synch are both google products...
good solution
so i had the same problerm that i had to move all my contacts amd text messages and whatever from windows mobile to android...
i searched google for alsmost 3 hours to find out how to move pim contacvts and backups to android but u cant...
but a good solution for that is sprite mobile
then go to migrate and then there are three steps to migrate contacts texts and everything from windows mobile to android...
u just need a pc and thats it...xD
good luck with that...
whenn u have any questions pm me!
nick
there's migration tool from Windows Mobile to Android, check Sprite Migrate! well it covers 3 data areas yet.. and unfortunately there's no way to recover the contacts groups(

Hi sox
Thanks for the link, can someone help me here. As I'm unsure on how to overcome this, also want to move over sms and call logs if possbile. I'm new to Android may be a step by step.
Thanks in advance.
well, as long as you have contacts on your sim, you should be able to have them and copy when you boot android. Depending on the sim crd you have you can save X amount of sms on it.
