can android decode pim backup files? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I'm migrating from the 6.5 roms to an android rom (Eclair Dark Theme) and wanted to ask if there was an app that can decode the PIM backup files so I can extract my contacts and messages, etc. Anything out there?

Moved as not ROM Development..

Oh ok sorry. either way hope someone can help ^_^

Actually I'm afraid you won't be moving to an Android ROM, you get to keep your present ROM and run Android off SD card, since we're not able to install Android in ROM yet.
Not sure if you can migrate your PIM data to android, but since you won't actually be losing them when you run android, I don't think it will be a big problem.
I'm sure there will be a way of doing it, just never really had that much data I'd be willing to trust to Android ports yet

i'm not sure if android reads pim backup files...but lets rephrase the question. i believe the intent is to get one's contacts and messages imported on to android?
if so, i THINK you can synch your windows mobile with google synch...and then boot into android and synch android with google synch to pull the contacts onto your android installation. maybe google synch can work for messages as well? i haven't tried any of this but i would imagine it should be possible, because android and google synch are both google products...

good solution
so i had the same problerm that i had to move all my contacts amd text messages and whatever from windows mobile to android...
i searched google for alsmost 3 hours to find out how to move pim contacvts and backups to android but u cant...
but a good solution for that is sprite mobile
then go to migrate and then there are three steps to migrate contacts texts and everything from windows mobile to android...
u just need a pc and thats it...xD
good luck with that...
whenn u have any questions pm me!
nick

there's migration tool from Windows Mobile to Android, check Sprite Migrate! well it covers 3 data areas yet.. and unfortunately there's no way to recover the contacts groups(

Hi sox
Thanks for the link, can someone help me here. As I'm unsure on how to overcome this, also want to move over sms and call logs if possbile. I'm new to Android may be a step by step.
Thanks in advance.

well, as long as you have contacts on your sim, you should be able to have them and copy when you boot android. Depending on the sim crd you have you can save X amount of sms on it.

Sprite Backup & ROM upgrades

Hi there,
I'm interested in upgrading my MDAIII to WM5005 but the idea of re-installing all my apps isn't very appealing.
The blurb on the Sprite Backup page claims the latest version will allow restores across ROM or device upgrades.
Is this the case, has anyone tried it and is it worth spending $30 for it?
Cheers,
Q.
Yes I am also interested in the same question. Maybe someone has a full or cracked version of sprite we can all experiment with?
Regards,
Simon
You guys might want to try (SPB Backup) instead
I had both and only use SPB backup now. Sprite is a big PITA compared to SPB.
Just my thoughts.
Personally, I'd never use an upgrade tool on a phone or a PC. When you import things, you import old stuff you might not want. Irrelevant config settings, incorrect registry keys and so on. I prefer to start afresh, nice & clean. With the phone, it's best (IMHO) to use ActiveSync to get your PIM data and simply enable file-sync to make a copy of My Documents on your desktop. Just drag over the old sync folder to the new once it's been upgraded and you have all your stuff across with little effort.
I'm prefering cabs these days for apps as they can be kept on the storage card and reinstalled in seconds if required.
You actualy HAVE to hard reset your device when updating to WM5; that means erasing all. You cannot restore some old settings or programs as this will be death for your PPC.
On the other hand, both SPB and Sprite can be used to restore Contacts, E-mails or PIMs (if you have a WM5 version).

Save People list in TF3D?

Anybody found a way to save the People list in TF3D so I do not need to re-add everytime I hard reset.
excellent question. I've wonder for quite some time for that same answer. Perhaps if you do a backup with Sprite back up might do. Since I left the tilt (kaiser) for the fuze (rafael) haven't ever used sprite back up. I know every back up used to take somewhat like 30-40 Mb... now the question is to locate a cab for it and test it if it backs up those contacts.

I don't use backup apps.. I would need a scheduled full backup everyday to have the latest restore, coz I wouldn't know when a app would hang my WM.
Besdes, backups are not effective against firmware upgrades. In fact, its not advisable.
I use Sashimi for applications and settings restore. I would like to know if there is a file to backup for that portion. I know I can't find it in registry.
PIM.vol holds your contact info as well as TF3D faves. Copy it to storage card and copy back after flash. This DOES NOT contain messages. So you would still need to backup messages with pim backup(or similar app) unless you can somehow copy cemail.vol. I havent been able to do it on Fuze, but there is a script arpound here that will help copy it(since it is in use by system from boot).
+1 on the PIM vol comment.
Furthermore give SPB Backup a shot (it's NOT free). I use SPB Backup since my Tilt/Kaiser times and even under the latest TF3D2 after a restore all contacts under the people tab including the assigned images were flawless restored.
And it is possible to restore backup on phone where you cange your ROM?
I think that you have got old ROM so you make a backup and then you change ROM in phone and restore backup.
Is any problem with this?
would overwriting the pim.vol create duplicates following a rom upgrade and then syncing with contacts on an exchange server?

DON'T do it even the most sophisticated backup / restore software WILL overwrite settings tweaks and worst case features of the new ROM, especially the little tweaks and tricks the chefs put into them.
Use PIM backup and start reading about UC or Sashimi and what other tricks can be performed to recover quickly after a ROM flash.

Can happen and may not happen. If you have everything synced with Outlook make a PIM backup just for security reasongs (in case the new ROM may not sync). Flash, install all your apps and tweaks sync with outlook (in that particular order). This WILL take care of contacts, not more not less. OTHER email programs you may use (google, hotmail) will NOT come back with this method.

SMS backup software

Hi,
After some advice (after a few hours trawling the entire site btw!).....
I need to backup my sms messages to pc and was trawling for software. Thought I'd found just what I need in Power SMS, but it seems to crash midway through doing an export to csv format. I can backup in the proprietary format (just like i can with SPB backup) but not to a "standard" format like csv
Can anyone offer a suggestion please? Would prefer not to pay for a piece of software that is (seemingly) not being developed (like Power SMS) again, but will do if I have to.
Thanks in advance!
If you really do your search, you'd have found PPCPimBackup .. and there're some great tips on restoring (and getting the 6.1 conversation model) back.
I have never tried any of these, but here are a couple from a discussion in another forum that I frequent.

Like I said, I did - and after renaming the ZIP file to get to the pbm file within, the format was proprietary and neither text nor hex editor could extrapolate anything meaningful (i.e. no RegEx I could find to pull into a db). Perhaps if you looked at my length of membership, you'd have adjusted the assumption that I hadn't searched properly.
Thanks to the others - am looking at Mobile Express and godswmobile.........
Update: Efficasoft Mobile Express works a treat - thanks for the advice denco7

I apologize for being unnecessary harsh, and for not reading thoroughly what being asked for.
Now thanking you for testing and Denco for tips, though I'm one that keeps all my stuff mobile, on spare SD and never really use the sync to PC, as the PC at work is locked and it's something I use 90% of my time. Been doing that since my Symbian time

thanks for your reply, then, they are no way, to truly export and import again, all ours contacts, and each time we do have to enter all the informations of all our people contact...
Sorry for a Sony Eriksson, I mean a phone upper quality or upper price, and a so basic real need to truly save info, and not to back-up....
USe microsofts MYPHONE service, it backs up all your contants online and you can set it up to sync automatically or when you want to, you can do it over activesync or wifi or data network, i've been using it for ages and its perfect!
install it from marketplace and make an use your windows live / hotmail account to use it.
you can also sync your contacts with outlook onto your pc i think so you'd have a copy of contacts there too?

use a software like sk tools to export your contacts in a xml file. or use a backup software like spb backup.

Lol, is that .xml executable on any other WM phone?
As for backup software - I think it can restore data only on THE SAME device?!
sk tools lets you export and import contacts using a .xml file. It works with every WM device. And a backup file made with spb backup is definitely restorable on another WM device, at least the part that contains your contacts data. You can choose what data you want to restore.
Uh, PPCPimBackup ?
Always used that to backup my stuff to SD before flashing..
Yeah, this one should also do the trick. I don't know it but it seems ok to me.

There are countless ways to backup the contacts data of your WM phone. Actually I don't think there is any other platform out there that has got more options to do this: SPB Backup, Resco Backup, SK Tools, several freeware solutions, outlook vià active synch, Microsoft My Phone...
You see, you can choose the solution that suits you best

[Q] how to migrate from WM8 to Android ?

Hi Folks, I hope I'm posting this in the right section withoud doubling another thread because I have found hints here and there but no actual, efficient solution to my problem.....
Excuse my english, I'm french and couldn't find any solution on french forums either so I'm knocking at your door....
I've always had Android devices but because of some technical issues my provider lended me a WM8 phone (Nokia Lumia 520) for a couple of months before I can get back a new Android phone.
I have the two phones with me for a couple of days but I'm having a hard time transfering some data from the WM8 phone back to my Android, especilly :
-call log (could cope without)
-pdf files (important)
-sms threads (critical)
I mainly focused on SMS's, thinking of different means I could expand upon later on if need be (app, backuping through desktop, outlook or Gmail synch, getting android to synch with OneDrive....) none of this worked so far.
Thanks in advance for your kind help
The only one you will get is the PDF files. You should be able to upload them all into OneDrive and then download them to your PC. From there, transfer them to your Android. The other two are stuck in the Windows cloud, just like how you can't transfer SMS threads from iPhone to Android.
if you come up with something, let the rest of us know!
It *might* be possible to import messages using Bluetooth. I know you can do it from Android to WP8. The other direction... never tried, no idea.

I hoped so from the very begining but I couldn't find any info about doing it the other way round as you mention :/
in the worst case, is there a means to backup those sms in order to check them later on, or print them maybe ?
Well, they're automatically backed up if you turn it on (Settings -> Backup) but that just goes to Microsoft's "cloud" and I don't know how easy it is to find / download / import it would be.
