Ok......
I bought my X1 in Taiwan, with the intention of flashing to an english rom, because i obviously haven't a clue about chinese, and english langue ones are not available here.
I've been flashing custom roms for a while, both on the X1 and on my old Wallaby and Ef's but havent found anything that ever really suits my needs.
I like the windows 6.5 roms, but WVGAfix doesnt seem to work with any of the builds despite saying it does which kinda makes all 6.5 obsolete for me because of the amount of software that doesnt work with a WVGA screen.
Which leaves 6.1. I have tried loads different 6.1 builds, but find there are certain things that always stop me wanting to keep them.
So my question is can anyone build a rom that is almost a light rom, that just has a few essential elements built in. One that might last me a couple of months, or at least until Mobile 7 is released as opposed to reflashing every few days. I have looked into cooking, but simply dont have the time with work to really get good at it. It drives me nuts having to reinstall everything and sync contacts every time i flash a new rom.
If i was going to build my own ROM i would be looking for a lite and fast 6.1 build that has to me what i would consider some essential apps cooked in.
Manilla
USB popup
Advanced config
Radio
Audio Booster
Htorch
All the finger friendly features
Xperia R3A Camera to replace the HTC camera within manilla.
MSN Push mail (not messanger)
Specifically i would really like to avoid all the things that are updated regularly, such opera, youtube, facebook, google maps etc, and all the things which would seem to me to be a waste of space / speed, such as
MP3 trimmer, panel manager and additional panels.
Basically a stripped lite Rom, with manilla and its associated features.
I have tried flashing lite roms, and installing manilla, but its a real hastle, and never gets as good a results as some of the outstanding chefs here. I can't be alone in wanting a rom like this? so i guess my last question is....is anyone up for the task or am i about to get flamed for something i should be doing myself?

I don't do custom rom for others but my medium rom seems to fits most of your requirement. (How can you call it a "lite" rom if you need manila that has thousands of file?)

I was just going to recommend you trying Jack's Medium

hee hee, I will recommend yrs and Itje's if he is asking for 6.5.
Oddly enough i have just tried Jacks 3.6 medium rom and its very fast.....i like it......keep testing for a few days and see how it goes, but looks real good so far!!
Jack - You're right in that i suppose with manilla in it isnt a light rom, but i would define anything that goes into a light rom as something that is necessary for the operation of the phone. As windows mobile 6.1 is BUTT ugly and finger unfriendly, i would classify manilla or equivalent as something that is pretty necessary!

I tend to think otherwise, you're right with wm6.1 being finger unfriendly. And there is lots of stuff (ie manila, spb mobile shell, eg) that can help you with that. And the choice is rather personal, something you would add later into a lite rom according to your needs.
(little remark, I'm not a manila fan so maybe a bit judged)
So, I've decided to reflash my Xperia after I played with some of the settings and managed to make the whole thing really slow, choppy and buggy. There's nothing wrong with the device, I've just messed things up a bit. Nothing to worry, I'm not a newbie with stuff like this, just a bit over-enthusiastic and overconfident at times.
So, to the point, I'm looking for better alternatives to the ROM and software I already have. I'll give you a quick run-down of the stuff I have, the stuff I love and the stuff I never use with my Xperia.
The stuff I have:
-SEX1 R3.61 Barebone ROM (and all the apps et al that came with it) with SEX1cons F v3
-SPB Mobile Shell 3.x (the newest one ATM with the Weather widget)
-G-Alarm
-Opera Mobile (newest Beta)
-Opera Mini
-Pocket Player
-Google Maps
-VistaHide Battery Gauge
-Some YouTube stuff I would use if they worked properly (which they don't, partially thanks to me)
The stuff I love:
-The SPB Mobile Shell above all else. If someone would make a ROM based on the Shell alone, I would flash my Xperia with it immediately. It's got the most conventional interface in any operating system I've ever come across. I just love it.
-G-Alarm. Never has waking up been so easy. (OK, it's still not easy, but at least I do get up nowadays. )
-The conversation-style SMS
-The both Opera browsers (when they work, which is less often than I'd like)
-The tweaked camera of the SEX1 ROM
-Google Maps. I've lost count how many times I would have lost without it.
-The "notes" function.
-Messenger
-The music and video playing capabilities of the device (regardless of programs. I use Pocket Player out of habit and WMP for video playback because the PP can't handle videos all that well)
-VistaHide Battery Gauge & the fancy SEX1cons
The stuff I never use and would like to get rid off or at least hide/disable somehow:
-All the GPS garbage. QuickGPS etc. I have no GPS devices and I'm not about to buy any. Google Maps is more than enough for me.
-E-Mail. I use E-Mail so seldom anyway, I haven't even bothered to set up an account on my Xperia.
-Panels. They were fun in the beginning, but nowadays I prefer apps to panels. I don't even remember when was the last time I pressed the "X Panel"-button on purpose. Not useless, but unnecessary to me as I never use them anyway.
So, the thing I'm asking is what would be the best choices for a new ROM and whether there's some software I should consider adding or replacing some of my old apps with? For me, a ROM is just something to install SPB Mobile Shell over, so there's no need for a fancy interface or loads of apps or anything. Just the bare essentials; a fast and stable ROM plus some of the basic apps (calculator et al I seldom use, but couldn't live without). I'm not a conservatist, so I'm not afraid to abandon any of the stuff I have for something better if there is.
Also, as I obviously have to backup my PIM data, do most of the backup apps out there function correctly with the conversation-style SMS messaging?
Give me a hand here, guys, I know your collective brainpower and knowledge far exceeds mine, that's why I asked you in the first place. Thanks in advance of any tips, suggestions etc. you could give me.

Hey, if I wouldn't need the help I wouldn't have asked. It's a sign of respect, you know? That I trust in your knowledge? You don't need to answer to anything. Even small opinions and pieces of information are more than welcome.
I recently flashed my X1i, tbh it was piss easy, just install hardspl and copy the image to ur SD card!
I would suggest trying EnergyRom, or if u need Jack's 4.x full if u need asian language support
SPB Mobile shell 2.0 is was my favourite, but that was easily replaced by Touchflo3d!
The rest of the apps u listed u can easily install afterwards.
btw there's an entire forum section dedicated to X1 ROM's, so u're prob posting in the wrong place
As I told, I'm not a newbie with this stuff. It's pretty dang easy, it's just that as you guys've been here longer than I, you naturally know more about the different ROMs and software than I do. I'm not asking you how to flash or anything, I'm asking you which ROM would best suite my needs and whether or not I should replace some of the apps I've been using so far with something better.
I took a quick look at the EnergyRom and if the author knows his stuff (which it seems), it seems like a cool pile-o'-bytes. I'll take it into consideration.

Yup, I know. If you read my post through, I just asked you people for possible better alternatives for the apps I've been using so far. I know how to install stuff and anything.

I was thinking that, too, but then decided to post here as I'm not specifically talking about ROMs alone, but the whole device's software in general.
I agree with Mjollnir1983, jackleung's "Jack V4.x Lite" would most likely be a good choice for you. I also agree that Touch Flo 3D is better the SPB Mobile Shell, but that's your personal choice. If you wanted to try TF3D, "Jack V4.x Medium" would be a good combination of a clean rom and TF3D. I personally like agent_47's "Valkyrie v3.x FireStorm", because it is has TF3D and is a fast rom with some useful apps. However it may have to many apps for you. If you decide you like agent_47's roms, then "Xperio" might work out alright. It doesn't have TF3D, but still has some good HTC stuff that makes it look better and is a more clean rom than firestorm. Links are bellow. Also I thought I would mention that QuickGPS is something you might want to keep, because it helps Google Maps get a satellite lock quicker. It doesn't always work great, but their are some fixes if your having problems with it.

I tried the TouchFLO 3D on my friend's cell and it seemed okay after a short while of getting used to. Not that different from SPB Mobile Shell and no disadvantages whatsoever compared to it. I'll give it a shot. Thanks a million, guys.
Now, the biggest question is whether or not there's a PIM backup app available that works correctly with the conversation-style SMS. (At the moment every time I restore a backup, it only restores the messages I've sent, not received. It's the messaging app itself that is responsible, cos I've tried several backup apps.) Is there, or is it just the messaging app I've tried to tweak that is responsible?
About the other apps... Well, I'll do some research myself. I'll probably stick with at least some of them for a while.
Um... I don't know man, there are thousands of apps. I think ROMs are down to personal preference and you should just try many of them to find the best one for you. From the top of my head:
Pocket Music - best music player IMHO.
SkyFire - nice broswer for flash heavy sites.
HTC mp3 trimmer WVGA - perfect for making your own ringtones.
SKTools, advanced config and xperia tweak - best tune up software there is.
SPB Online - online games, radio and TV.
MyMobiler - lets you control the X1 from your PC.
Innobec Side Window - use the X1 as a secondary screen for your PC.
Resco Explorer and Photo Viewer.
SPB Weather
SPB Insight - RSS feeds.
HTorch - pocket flashlight.
WinMobileTorrent
Core Player - best player for every video file except mp4 (use WMP for that).
MS Reader - E-Book reader.
Skype mobile
MorphGear - perfecr emulator for every old game possible.
WK Task - best task manager/launcher/x button.
Homescreen ++ - lets you check your temp, cpu speed, ram usage and more, directly on your homescreen. You can havega taskbar launcher as well. This app is a must.
There are many more, but you have to be more specific about what you want.
Cheers

You have the internal GPS of the Xperia!!!
Google maps use A-GPS need data connection to work. The normal GPS is free (exception of software and maps).
@orelsi: Thanks, I'll take a look at those shortly.
kremlincrackers: The more you know...
Thanks a lot, I wasn't aware of that at all. That means I should keep the QuickGPS, then.
EDIT: I started flashing the Jack V4.x Medium ROM. Let's see what this thing's capable of...
What you're looking for is a similar version of what I have,
You could have any light/fast ROM, I prefer to use a tweaked ROM with cache and memory enhancements. At present I am using WM 6.5 but it's even more stable with 6.1
Then SPB Shell 3, as for applications adn in addition:
- Removed X Panels and remapped panel key to Resco Explorer.
- TOMTOM this is essential, if you wish not to spend money on it there are some free alternatives, although not as good.
- Resco Explorer and Registry editor
- SBP Television, Insight, Snapshot and Imageer.
- My Mobiler
- Finger Keyboard
- World Card Mobile
- Rhodium Dialer
Cumps
Okay, fellas, thanks for the help!
I tried the ROMs mentioned above, but finally settled for the awesome Touch X ULTIMATE X-TREME 10.1 Original Green which was suggested to me by a friend of mine. I can't praise it enough. I've used 8-12 ROMs (including big names like Valkyrie, Touch-IT and SEX1 R3) in the past and it's ultimately the fastest and most stable of them. As long as it keeps running as well as it is ATM, I seriously doubt I'll ever change the ROM again. The only tweaks I had to make were adding a Programs-tab to the TF3D and removing all the Panel Manager stuff while rebinding the panel key to Pocket Player.
Give it a shot, guys. You might fall in love just like I did.

Register, participate and enjoy the most stable bug-free winmo 6.5 in my opinion.
Clean and ready to customize at owner's discretion.
Hello! I have an X1a purchased in April 09, and currently has Windows Mobile 6.1
This phone, as pretty as it may look, gives me tons of grief daily.
1. It is slow, devastatingly slow. It freezes on pretty much anything.
2. WinMo 6.1 is confusing to me. I can't figure out how to save contacts to my storage card, or organize anything.
3. Opera always crashes on me and my internet connection goes out frequently.
4. Battery life is very short
5. It is now full of scratches (anyone use body guard or invisishield?)
and a lot more stuff
I bought this instead of an iPhone because the physical keyboard.
I would like to flash to winmo 6.5 w/ panels. Currently I am running it on AT&T in US.
I have no prior knowledge of anything technical regarding mobile phones, and so far I know that I need to get a Hard SPL to do anything.
How do I get Hard SPL on my phone?
Another question I have is regarding contacts. Currently I backed up all contacts to SIM and to phone, and in my contacts list, for every person, the contact is duplicated so I see the same name twice. I would like to backup my contacts to my SD card, but see only one line item per contact. What can I do here.
I am a newbie. trying to maneuver through this phone. Any and all input would be extremely valued and lessen the gray hairs on my head!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=431218
Has the information you need for HardSPL
It is a must to go.
Once you upgraded to 6.5, x1 will perform like another phone. 6.5 is faster, however, depends which ROM you're using. Currently there are many ROM here are worth to try. For fastest/clean ROM, can try Jack's Lite or unoff V10.
However, these version are very lite without many applications but just fast. So you have to re-install softwares by yourself.
But some peoples would like ready to use ROM. Mean necessary applications already installed. In this case, Christian ROM is recommended.
Actually I tried almost all of them. For less bug one, I prefer clean/lite ROM.
Do all of the 6.5 ROMs that are here come with Panels? I know it may sound silly but I am pretty much hooked on the Sbp panel and don't use any other interface so I would like to get it back if I go to 6.5.

Some ROMs do include panels, but many of them donĀ“t - it seems that quite a big portion of users are, just like me, very fond of Manila, the HTC I/F.
If you do prefer SPB anyway, did you think about flashing a "pure" ROM, as mentioned above, and to install the shell not as a panel, but as "home" screen? Saves memory and should be quite fast then! Or, maybe one day you will want to try another I/F, such as PointUI, who knows?
If I install the Tochflo3D on X1 will i be able on uninstall it...also, on youtube, there is a video that uses Touchflo3d on landscape mode too..but that phone doesent have X1 panels anymore....
Also, excuse my illiteracy, but what is manilla?? is it another name for TF3d??
what version is the TF3D i have...(ive downloaded it from one of the threads here only, from a mediashare link)
last Q, how easy wil it be to uremove in case of some screwup....
Thanx a lot to any1 who helps me...
Can i use this on WM 6.5.....
If i upgrade to 6.5... can i still use the TouchFlo 3d...
thanx
Touchflo3d (also known as Manila) is an interface, a skin - like SPB's mobile shell.
The individual panels can be understood as different "pages" of a skin too (even though they are individual applications loaded as needed). So, really I'd say that you would use one or the other. I never enjoyed the panels, mainly due to the slow transition (having to go to the panel picker, then wait for the chosen panel to load)
For that matter, to me Mobile Shell feels like an add-on, you can very easily get to the bare bones of the Windows interface. Manila (at least cooked into ROMs) is a very good interface, and doesn't feel like an add-on, nor does it need time to transition between its "pages".
I've never installed Manila on its own, but as there are plenty of Manila cabs available, you can install & uninstall as needed.
You can also disable the panel manager from starting up on reboots, and disable the panel manager button too
thanx a lot Paul C, i really appreciate your help. From what I understand, the cabs available arent the actual touchflo3d OS, the ones coming with the actual HTC fones, am i right?
Touchflo is not OS, it is just interface that sits on the home screen. It is the same windows in HTC phones, too.
I would recommend flashing custom ROM instead of installing touchflo, because everything is A LOT faster in cooked ROMs.
I am a little confused..there are so many ROMs in the forums...one of the Youtube videos showed X1 with a complete HTC OS..like jkoljo said, it was a much faster..so which is that ROM..allso can i have a OEM ROM..all of the ROMs here are cooked...some official ones??
also, its quite a cliche question, but what is the best ROM for X1..i want a stable, with all the apps working, also, preferbly ladnscape shud work and it should be a panel install also..thanx a ton!
if you dont want to flash a rom, then i would recommend spb mobile shell 3.5.1. you can customize it to have a combination of touchflo and android.
downside, it cost money but well worth it.
SPB mobile shell
Spb mobile shell 3.5.1 is great. You can try before you buy from SPB website or you can use the slightly older free korean version with english hack, OR you can download the 2.x version for free as a panel from Sony Ericsson panel page. at any rate its well worth the money if you do decide to buy it.
Hi guys,
My dad's handed me his Vario III / (Kaiser 120) to use.
I did a reset using the option in 'SETTINGS' to reset it and lose all date. Now, when I start it up, it looks like new and the time/date has to be set. All my dad's contacts have gone. Cool. - 1. Was this a Hard-Reset ?
I went to something like SETTINGS > INFO and got this:
Radio Vers 1.70.18.02
ROM DATE 9/01/08
ROM Vers. 3.31.110.3 WWE
Build 19212.1.03
When I start it up, it says Windows Mobile v6.1
A couple years ago, I loaded tomtom navigator on it for my dad. It was really good with the internal gps.
Anyway, now that I have the phone, I'd like to install tomtom navigator on it, use the camera (maybe 10 photos a week) and upload pics to my PC, and browse the internet (email, twitter etc.) from time to time. Also, I'd use the handset to connect via bluetooth to my laptop so I can use it for internet (in emergencies, as it is kinda slow). I also text (3-5 texts a day)
I also downloaded an app called Shazam.cab from a site called mobilism, which I would love to use as I have seen it on my lucky friend's iPhone and the app is awesome!
2. Apart from the usb cable, and active sync on my pc, do i need anything else to install shazam on my phone/micro sd card?
3. I assume a ROM means operating system? Like windows xp, 7 etc.
I see that people are putting new ROMs on their phone. My phone has
Storage Free Space: 121MB and Programs Free 55MB. There isn't a lot of 'bloatware' hogging up resources on there, as far as i can see.
4. Do I need to install a custom ROM now that you know my uses (in blue font above) for the phone? / do I need to flash it? I.e. will a new ROM/flash make my life a lot easier? Better to convert to android system? Will I need to do any of these things to install shazam?
I was goin to do this on the weekend so I can use other sims in my phone:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
fingers crossed it goes ok.
Can you please help?
Thank you
Sonny
ps. I may need to ask a couple more questions after this. Once again thank you for your help. If anyone needs advice on cameras, please let me know as I am a regular contributor to a photography forum.
1. Yes, it was HARD-Reset (removes all settings, contacts, messages, ...). It doesn't do anything to the MicroSD card.
2. I don't know anything about that. Sorry!
3. Yes, ROM means operating system. There are stock ROMs and modified ROMs. For Kaiser (a.k.a. HTC TyTN II) you'll find only stock Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM and lots of modified WM 6.1 and WM 6.5 ROMs. There's no stock WM 6.5 ROM for Kaiser.
4. Android is not stable enough. Sometimes it crashes, doesn't wake up and so on... All your mentioned things can be done with both WM 6.1 and 6.5, so it's for you to decide what to use. WM 6.1 looks a little bit old and terrible, but it uses less resources than WM 6.5 which looks a little bit... like system that was made to be similar to iPhone OS. Yes, WM 6.5 is more finger-friendly, but the applications grid drives me crazy, it uses more resources (and loves draining the battery)
Thank you very much for taking the time to post. I found it really useful.
I stuck with original HTC ROM with 6.1 and I am loving it. Shazam works wonderfully well. The phone is so damn sharp. And, using 2 apps at once is brilliant.
Does anyone know if I can put more icons/apps on the TODAY SCREEN?
At the moment, I am only allowed to put 6 in the start menu screen, and 1 (tom tom) on the today screen.
My Start menu has: 1 File explorer, 2 organiser (i use the calculator a lot), 3 internet explorer, 4 MS word (for my notes), 5 shazam (use a lot), 6 Resco photo manager (for uploading to FlickR)
I'd like to add 2 more apps (wunder radio + core player) somewhere with quick access.
Any ideas?
Thank you
Try copying applications links (.lnk files) from \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ to \Windows\Start Menu\
I'm not sure if it's going to work with Windows Mobile 6.1, but it's safe to try
