I've spent a couple of hours looking at the big photo sharing sites but I'm sort of confused as to which one I should go with. I'm mainly going to use it to share photos with friends and family. Nothing public. I've looked at the following sites:
Flickr
Windows Live Photos
Picasa Web Albums
Photobucket
My ISP's own photo sharing.
Here is my criteria:
1. When inviting friends, they should not have to sign up before viewing photos. Most will not bother signing up. I should be able to send them a link via email and then when they click on it, it should just bring them to the gallery.
2. When I upload new photos or update an album, the site should automatically notify my friends and family via email that something has changed.
3. Possibly have friends upload their own photos to the same album or new album. I could create a public user id on that site so that my friends and family can log in using that account. Rather than creating an account of their own. Couple this with #2 above, I think it would work well.
Can somebody recommend a photo sharing site that can do this or anything that is close enough to the criteria above?
Thanks in advance.
you wanna so much
maybe if you have a server and make your own you can give all this offer to your friends.
I use both flickr, ms photo sharing and googles Picasa
all of them are free and works for my needs
I've decided to use Windows Live Services because it does most of what I need... and also because I have a hotmail account. Those of my friends that have live or hotmail accounts can be on my "network" and they receive updates of new photos that get uploaded by me and vice versa. they can comment on my photo and I've given them permission to upload their own photos - like when we go out to a dinner party and they have pics of me, they can upload it to my album.
Those that don't have a live/hotmail account are still able to view my album, but they will not be able to add additional photos.
With the addition of Windows Live Photo Gallery, I don't even need to open a browser to upload photos, I can do it all from within that app. I found that it uploads to flickr accounts too.
Nice, I think Microsoft has done a decent job with these Live services.
with the program gladinet cloud desktop
you can access your live dirs such as photo sharing as a drive
Z in my computer
I use that to easy navigate files around using total commander

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try.
This might sound obvious, but have you tried facebook?
So many people have a facebook account these days that you shouldn't particularly need to worry about them having to sign up just to view your photos, and it should do everything else you need.
Alternatively, flickr is probably your next best bet.

Actually, yes, I've tried facebook. The problem with it is that I haven't figured out how to share photos with specific people (like family only). If I upload some pictures of my kids, it seems like your entire friend list can view these photos. Not good considering that I have some friends who are just acquaintances.
I've been playing around with Windows Live and the more I use it the more I'm liking it. The Windows Live Photo Gallery (an install to your PC) makes uploading photos so easy. Also, the web interface for Windows Live Services looks very good... unlike Google's.
The one thing that I love about Windows Live Photos is that you can share photos with people who are not a part of Windows Live. You basically send out a specialised URL to an email address and that person just clicks it to view the photo gallery. People who are on Windows Live and are a part of your network have even more options. They get instant updates on when you add photos or comment on a photo. Not only this, Windows Live is about permissions. When you setup an album, you have several options on who you want to share it with and what they can do with it (ie. upload their own photos). I don't think anyone else has this kind of functionality.
The other thing that I just discovered with Windows Live is that if you have a camera phone (who doesn't nowadays) and you have a data plan, you can actually upload photos to specific albums from your phone. All you do is enable the feature in Windows Live and for each album assign a keyword + secret word. This keyword+secretword combination makes up a unique email address. Hence, once you've taken the photo, just email it to the unique email address and it gets put into your album automatically and instantly. All the people on your network will get notified of a new photo. That's pretty neat...
Microsoft has really done a good job with their Live services.... now, if only they could get the Live calendar to sync to my WM device OTA... then I would consider becoming a MS fanboy.
ckl...that's very good info on windows live! I'll check it out since it sounds a lot more flexible than the Flickr I'm using...
I've always been a big fan of Picasa. It's one of the Google services that's being integrated with mobile devices along with PC and Mac platforms. So not only do you have online access, but also mobile/desktop access. I likey :].

Yahoo GO! will allow you to login with one touch, and then upload your most recent photos pretty fast.
It uses flickr.
SPB Imageer will allow you to upload your photos to a online account:
Features
* One-click slideshow with smooth transitions
* Multiple thumbnail options
* Picture editing (red-eye, brightness, contrast, and more)
* Storage card notification with common tasks
* Batch optimizing of photos
* Web publishing (Flickr, Fotki.com, and more)
* Album creation and sharing
* Rich picture notes (text, drawing, and sound)
* Powerful screenshot tool
Not free though: $14.95 US
Dashwire is pretty good too
Here is a roundabout but effective way with a flickr account and a twitter account (gotta love twitter when its up!).
Try http://flickr.twittergram.com/
Actually this is more than you want. You can just email or SMS to your flickr account, and/or use twittergram to have the flickr update reflected in your twitter update stream so friends can get notified as well. Ah thats a mouthful ...
shozu is an awesome app. It will run in the background and pop up after you snap a photo. It will let you automatically send the photo to a lot of sites (flickr/youtube/BBC) as well as automatically send them to a FTP or email address. It is pretty useful. I used to use it to upload photos to my wordpress site automatically.

Man, I wrote this tool ages ago. I completely forgot about it until I saw the other thread in this forum. Basically I wanted a way to get all my friend's facebook profile photos into my phone really easily.
Your phone syncs your contacts from your Gmail/Google. And Gmail supports contact pictures. I wrote an application that logs into your facebook, and finds any contacts that also exist in your Gmail account. If it finds a matching contact, it uploads that Facebook profile picture to your Gmail contact. And then those pictures show up on your phone! Pretty useful.
Usage (this application runs on your Windows PC):
0) Make sure you have .NET Framework 3.5. The application may crash otherwise.
1) Start the application and input your Gmail username and password.
2) The next screen will ask for your Facebook credentials.
3) Wait for it... Wait for it... Done! (The application will have finished syncing)
4) Wait some more... Your phone may take a while to sync the new images from Google's servers. But they'll get there eventually.
WARNING: This will replace any photos that may already be associated with your contact. Go ahead and modify the code if you don't want it to do that.
Download the Windows application and the source here:

Whoah dude! I can't use this (Mac!) but sounds great. I'm assuming you have all the API's down, have you considered building this as an Android app?

Just run it on a Windows PC then. Nothing is actually stored on the PC; it's just syncing pictures between servers (Google/Facebook). I ran it once several months ago and haven't thought about it since.
Yeah, I've thought about making it an Android application, but I don't think it would be that useful. Contact management and syncing between two servers is done much easier on a PC, for both the user and a developer. I'm thinking about improving the application to allow syncing between Outlook, Facebook, and Google. That would be handy, but difficult to use on a phone. The results, however, would show up on your phone.
I must say, great little app. I've given up trying to add pictures to my contacts. Worked perfetly once I got Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installed. I hope you really consider making this an Android App. I can guarantee that it'll get thousands of downloads in the first day.
For those of you who do note have Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, check out the link below.

this is very nice. i would love to use it.... if only i wasnt still using myspace... bleh
Facebook pics for gmail contacts...
worked great for me. Thanks!
If it is on Android, every time a new contact is added, the program searches for the profile image from Facebook or Linkedin. It might be cool. Is your source code under GPL? I am interested in converting your code into Java, so it can run on Android.
It's Creative Commons, not GPL. The application itself is less than 30 lines of code. It is just leveraging the .NET bindings to the Facebook and Google Data APIs.
So is this using phone numbers? Email addresses? Names? (to compare between Gmail and Facebook)?

Just names. The Facebook API does definitely does not give you access to the email address. And the version I was using (and this may have changed) also does not give you access to phone numbers.

Ahh... ok. I have a lot of my friends listed by nicknames etc. I understand that the phone/emails are actually images (I assume to thwart off spammers with automated catchers).
It would be awesome if this wasn't the case though. I have been spending the last hour adding email addresses from Facebook contacts so I can add a picture to their name.
good app but i wish it sync'd contacts by name instead of email...
meaning if two names match, sync. even if i just have a phone number for that contact and not an email.
but good app.

Actually, it only matches by name. You can't access emails or phone numbers through the Facebook API.

Reading comprehension is not one of his strong points.
How can i change the way it matches? for example instead of names, i put my friends facebok id as "customer id" field on windows mobile outlook. and i want it to syncronize if they matches istead of names. this way there will be no confusion if names doesnt match because of a small difference. do you think it needs much work?
worked pretty well for me.. pic quality was a bit distorted on a few.. but what the hell.. they're photo's I didn't have before Thank You for a neat little app.

Agreed. Nice app, thanks
hate to bring back an old thread, but is there any plan to develop this for facebook/microsoft pic transfers? For those of us that don't have office, but use an @hotmail or @live, this would be great.
Thanks
It would be great if I could link the contacts to their Facebook account manually if their names do not match ^^.
There is also a facebook sync app on the market that works well for me. Hasn't missed a contact or had a false match for me.
Okay, I know Flickr (from Yahoo!) is a great photo sharing site, but when Picasa is a Google product, how is it there's no app (that I've seen-maybe I'm missing something) for Picasa for the Eris? It's just odd to me, that's all. I use Picasa like it's going out of style, and I wish there was a way...
Am I missing something? If so, please, do tell!
If you hit share when selecting a photo it lets you choose picasa

Sorry, I guess I was more aiming at finding a Picasa App to view pictures. I apologize for not stating that properly! lol I knew about sharing pics, just wanted to view them like you can on your Flickr account.
picasa, being owned by google, doesnt really need an app per se.
google is just damn good at making mobile websites. none of their software have apps except for things made specifically for apps (shopper, etc), things that wouldn't work well with the current mobile web technologies (finance), or voice, which really does need an app to be more closely integrated with texting/calling, and for it to be able to notify you of new messages.
all of google's services, like reader and picasa, and so many more, just stay online. Google is a very very big "cloud" company. cloud computing is the whole basis of android, and the upcoming chrome os.
Lemcott is correct. Just open your browser and browse to google.com (if that's not already your homepage ), tap 'more' at the top of the page and then select Photos from the drop-down. That gives you access to all of your Picasa albums. Your other option is to use the 3D Gallery app. It syncs with Picasa.
Hi all,
I just unplugged my sim from my X1 silver, and plugged it into my HD7. and then, after two hours...
1. how do you actually sync your phone contacts from ms outlook 2007 to it? I tried downloading zune, but nothing. The freakin' thing doesn't even have a manual.
2. I thought I won't encounter a problem since it's HTC and since it's WM7, and since my PC is win7 x64. But oh boy, this is getting in my nerves.
3. WM7 doesn't know how find a hidden (SSID) WIFI. I mean,.. Dang!
compared to any wm phones, just plug the hell into your pc, get wmdc, and then voila. 5 minutes tops.
XD
WP7 is indeed a different bird from WM. Hidden SSID is a known limitation, and hopefully gets addressed with the coming update.
I assume your outlook is not connected to exchange? If so, piece of cake, if not, you'll likely prefer (or not) to use a hotmail connector for outlook. This essentially creates a cloud-based sync.
Oh, and the manual is inside the box in a little pocket.
I managed to upload my msoutlook 2007 contacts to the cloud using OC32bit. almost a piece of cake. But, I'm having a hard time getting it to my phone.
When I try to add an account, it says windows live account is already added. but when I tap people. There nothing in the contacts list. None.
When I try to login to windows live via pc I can see all the contacts from there.
I... just hate it.
Talk about innovation, talk about the future. XD
Use Outlook connector and a hotmail account and everything works perfectly.
Hi,
Thanks! I manage to do it now. After spending a night my phone book has everything on it now(contacts wise). Too lazy to repeat it for calendar, lastly, I missed activesync so much that even your one note syncs to your wm.
I'm having thoughts on returning the phone and getting the android version (desire or X10) because of these:
1. hd7 only installs apps on what windows wants and not what YOU want.
2. it doesn't support pdf file for book reading, document reading.
3. I heard it doesn't open .doc .xls and any lower .doc files. (old docs still exist today unconverted)
4. I can't put files on the phone "ala USB flash disk style" I mean where's the plug drag and go, when you use the phone business wise. how do you intend to use the 16G space? (for movies or music; given the rumored battery life?)
Everything we do on our wm phones aren't easy to do on this wp7 anymore, I haven't reviewed at it before I grabbed my HD7 since I said to myself what do I have to worry about? I have grown from WM5, WM6 and WM6.1, what could go wrong?
I dunno I mean I hope I'm not babbling, I can't google if i don't open pocket ie and type google, I can't install opera, I can't browse flash sites I mean, youtube isn't the only streaming video out there. I can't install my garmin mobile xt, I can't install java app, I can't explore the contents of my phone. I mean this is freakin' alien windows i'm using. I don't even know if I can find my phone on over the local area (win7) network or homegroup.
With all the "I can'ts" I said. I thought I'd better off android!. XD
1. hd7 only installs apps on what windows wants and not what YOU want.
If you mean the app store is limited, yes it is. It's growing though.
2. it doesn't support pdf file for book reading, document reading.
Download the Adobe Reader from Marketplace. Free.
Haven't tried #3.
4. I can't put files on the phone "ala USB flash disk style" I mean where's the plug drag and go, when you use the phone business wise. how do you intend to use the 16G space? (for movies or music; given the rumored battery life?)
Zune. It's just a matter of figuring it out. It's different, to be sure. They also want you to utilize cloud based storage more. The offer free SkyDrive space included with your live account, and most of the MS apps can access that space. Other apps, like the eBook reader Freda, can connect to a DropBox account. Then there is Sharepoint.
I can't google if i don't open pocket ie and type google
Open up IE then press the capacitive Search button. Instantly takes you to Google.
I just found there's a google app in the markeplace too? and yes it grows every hour, its almost endless... pretty neat!
If you say it's just a matter of figuring it out, I hope I can figure it out with an option NOT to upload it on a cloud, since c'mon not all places in the world have super fast internet connection, I don't want uploading an entire folder up there then downloading it to my device.
And even if the chevron thing would work on my device, It would void my warranty so I wouldn't try.
After 2 days with my new phone, I feel much more comfortable with it now. I hope it would get even better.
Gotta follow this up since I don't want to start another similar thread.
I have another question:
The phone contacts (people) always have you on top named "Me"
question is, How do you actually link a contact to "Me"?
I just noticed it now that somebody asks for my bank account and of course, I'll look for it in my notes within my ms outlook contact under my name. I just found out that my name in my hd7 doesn't have a picture and doesn't have a facebook link(not that the FB link is too important), etc. and when I click the link icon in the bottom middle, I can link it to any other contact entry in my phone except "Me".
Technically speaking, the contact named after me in my phone is treated as another person. I tried signing on to windows live, check my contact there, found my name and the options I have is "add as a friend" which is really beginning to sound funny.
Long story short, I need to link my ms outlook 2007 contact(myname) to the owner of the HD7 phone which is me, so I wouldn't retype everything and delete the synced "myname" account since if i do so that would be deleted in my PC. I gotta have 'em both. but I wish I just could link it to my phone's "Me" account.
That's a toughie.
So the "Me" contact syncs up with both your Windows Live account and your Facebook account (which you add in services --> email and accounts, NOT the blue facebook app)
I don't see a way to sync the Me contact with another outlook contact.
You may want to take the notes in your Outlook contact and copy them to your Live stuff.

that's dependant on carrier... I get yahoo, you could get the google search app from the market or pin google from IE to the start so you can launch straight to google.

Yeah, not the blue facebook app. and I think I'll just have to deal with it having two seperate accounts the Me, and my outlook unlinked.
@frontieruk
Speaking about the search button, it is getting annoying when you actually hit the button accidentally. I hope someday a double-press (double-click) fix would make it possible.
I had a similar experience except that I got the "Me" where it's suppose to be the first time. Learning little by little, I guess Hotmail (windows live) is actually kinda cool.

I'll check that one out. Thanks!
Since the camera is insanely great on this phone I have racked up thousands of photos over the past few months.
It takes me a long time to do the following:
- Sort the photos on the phone's gallery into manageable events (because the phone sometimes mixes my work/home photos etc)
- delete bad photos from the phone's gallery
- log into G+ and go through the thousands of photos again, sorting them into albums again.
- delete the pictures from the "auto-upload" section of G+ (I treat this kind of like the gmail inbox and like to empty it out once in awhile)
It's a crazy number of steps. I do want to keep auto-backup, because I do find it very useful to be able to share photos and albums so effortlessly. Also, when I want to wipe my phone, I don't have to worry about backing any of them up, because I know they are all backed up already. Also, I don't want to miss out on any auto-awesomeness. So I don't really want to turn it off.
So how do the rest of you deal with your thousands of awesome photos?
I don't have near the number of photos you have, just between 150-200 at a time. I have set Dropbox for auto upload and after taking a few snaps I go into the gallery, delete pics I don't like and share to FB or Twitter some of them right away. Synching only via Wi-Fi allows me to delete bad ones when I took plenty
When I reach an unmanageable number of photos on any phone, I just keep the ones I really like and store the remaining on my HDD and the cloud using SkyDrive.

I have it set to only auto-upload when im on wifi and plugged in, which I figured would work great. But it turns out I'm on wifi for about 80% of my photo-taking. And when I'm on wifi and I plug in, its because my battery is dead and I want it to charge... not the best time to be uploading hundreds of images.
I suppose I just have to delete them quicker, but with this camera, there are so many good ones that I don't want to lose. It's also not as easy with the sense camera as it is with the stock google camera. In the camera-roll view you could just swipe photos down to delete them.
I guess what is really annoying me is that I want to keep up a gallery on the phone, and one on google+ photos, and they don't sync like they should. If I sort photos on the phone, google+ should mirror the sorting. But it doesn't, it just dumps them all into one huge auto upload folder. So you end up with a messy phone gallery, or a messy google+ gallery, or you maintain both.
