Hi.
I need a new phone, as i just lost my motorolla A920, AND permanetely bricked my Universal (very bricked, very dead, no bootloadermode or anything). I was looking for something unlocked, perhaps around the 300-400$ mark.
I want something with an X-scale processor, VGA screen, and perhaps maby a real GPU (useful gpu a.k.a not ATI's imageon(as i have never found one program that actually uses it.)). QWERTY keyboard would be cool, but not vital. Support for SDHC or Compact flash woud be preffered. And windows mobile . And working drivers *Stares at HTC Diamond*. (Isnt it a shame the Axim isnt a phone )
Im in australia, sydney-ish area, incase anyone here wants to sell me one (would only be pickup)
Was looking on eBay, may be possible to pick up a O2 Xda Flame for 400$. Its big but that doesnt bother me (at all), and i could buy a bigger/more batteries, as not hugely concerned about battery life (i can charge it everyday if needed). Must be unlocked, no plan, just buy outright.
Anyone have any suggestions/reccomendations?

Visit the marketplace section, you´ll find a large variety of HTC phones for selling, even some members from Australia
Good luck,
Well I'll have you know my next phone is going to be a nokia n82. The thing is blazing fast, it can play quake 3 at 25fps, every game and emulator you can imagine, the camera is great, extremely fast shutter speed, xenon flash.
it's just a basic candybar phone, packed with lots of features.
But as far as windows mobile, I dont know. I've pretty much given up on windows mobile until there is something fast. WM is kind of behind in speed versus other devices and OS's.
Thanks for the increadibly fast replies.
That nokia looks a little too... 'generic nokia' for my taste. The A920, Universal (and that Flame) look better for design (because they do, thats why). And i would prefer WM, none-the-less. Im not concerned about the camera (forgot this part in the first post). it doesnt even have to have a camera, i never used it on the other phones. the phone is not limited to HTC.

I would rather get it fixed, but i dont think there is any hope in hell of fixing it without some specialised equiptment or something, it does nothing except for the 2 status lights flash. Tried bootloader/hard reset mode, just doesnt do anything. Would appreciate some help to get it back to life though, its just so cool.
If i could trade it in for another phone (or reduced cost for the phone) than maby.
The flame will work in australia right? If so is it a reliable phone. Im aware of its size.
If it does work in australia and can get it at the right price, i will, but in the (very likely) event that i cant, i would want to know what people would reccomend.
As a backup i was also eyeing a HTC TyTN, perhaps not as powerful, but looks decent. Although if i cant get a flame, i would really want a universal (a working one). Its just so cool full stop.
Also, im also known as bobisgod... if that rings any bells...

from IRC?
Tried the universal bootloader again (and again (and again)) and still nothing at all on the screen, only the status lights flash.
Will look at the flame now, or as a backup TyTn. any other ideas on phones / places to buy flame in australia / ideas to get universal back to life?

Hi,
It is the same one yeah. But its been unlocked by imeicheck now and works perfectly. Has the htc rom on now so no branding.

Its sold now.
I must say i have gne back to the iphone. A MUCH better device. I mean the browsing on the tytn was absolutely **** , as close to useless as it could get. The iphone was a much much much better device for browsing.
I have just sold my pc and got an imac too and i must say it is far superior in everything than windows.
Im so glad i got out of the windows rat race , and will never go back.
Matt
Well good luck to you - I hope you find what you are looking for. The Mac is a nice platform but too "cutesy" me though. I am happy to browse at 1.8Mbit/s on my TyTnII rather than the paltry speeds available on the iPhone. But each to their own

Good luck to you too. It is a bit cutesy but i like that instead of the clunky virus ready windows. ALso, i work from home so use wifi 99.9% of the time so get a fair bit more than 1.8mbps and when im out still get an average of 220kbps using o2 edge.
Matt
Glad to hear you sold it and went back to using a mobile phone instead (and a very pretty one).
Reality is that if you're working from home with full PC (or Imac) services at hand then you don't need a PDA/phone/GPS anyway which is what the Kaiser/Hermes/Wizard excel at (ie, why do you need GPS to find your office at home or use a thumb pad keyboard with a full size beast close to hand).
As for Windows - couldn't agree more - after all, the computer revolution would have happened anyway wouldn't it (eventually).
The iphone is far from a beast , especially compared to the kaiser (the kaiser is 3 times thicker and only slightly smaller in height)
Cuteness and entertainment versus functionality. I'll take function every time. Sort of like a trophy girl that looks good on your shoulder but can only sit at home.

LOL I agree. If I were to upgrade my Artemis now, Ill go for Kaiser and never a girly Ifone.
But Ill hang on to my Artemis as I dont think the 400Mhz CPU and built-in keyboard is worth it (for me anyway). I dont like the bulkiness of the Kaiser as well.
Nothing like a trophy girl?!?!?
Its an awesome device that can do most of what the kaiser does. And what it does that the kaiser does it does with style and knocks spots off the kaiser.
COme february when the sdk comes out we will see what happens then.

Hmm.... I'm not sure an sdk will help with hardware limitations... . Good luck with the iPhone. From a pure features perspective, have you considered the following:
Hardware Stuff Kaiser has iPhone doesn't (I think):
1. GPS
2. 3g (HSDPA)
3. "Tactile" Keyboard (the iPhone's touch screen is not useable for me when I'm "on the go")
4. Removable Battery (I burned the iPhone's out too quickly through the day)
5. Nice Motorola Power Interface (works with many peripherals)
6. MicroSD Slot for memory changing/expansion
Software Stuff Kaiser has (iPhone doesn't yet - may be better with SDK):
1. Sirius Radio
2. Kaiser can act as Wifi access point - this is just an AMAZING feature
3. Blackberry Connect
4. Outlook
5. Office Apps
There are probably many more, but those are the ones I thought of in the time I wrote this .
If you can - try the iPhone before you give up the Kaiser? I think the screen on the iPhone is nice (but sucks batteries down like crazy), but the interface, hardware and apps just don't cut the mustard (as least for a highly mobile worker like me).

I TOTALLY disagree. I found after a week that the keyboard is sooo much better than the kaiser

My battery lasts me 3 days and i am NEVER off it trust me

8GB is plenty for me and probably 90% of the population

Stuff iphone does that kaiser cant:
Very fast and slick os , never slows down , never has to reset , never has to hard reset.
Music is just AMAZING! , the kaiser will never be able to compete.
Web browsing is in a different league. It has full internet minus flash , and the rendering and zoom pinch is just the killer thing for me.
Finally what the iphone has that the kaiser or any other windows phone i have had seems to lack is just the wow factor. Every time i pick the iphone up for a call out and about i get wows off people and utter shock on their face when i show them the stuff it does. I have never ever ever had anybody say that to a windows phone.
RIP Kaiser , its Iphone for me !

Well - good luck with your new iPhone! It sounds like your mind is already firmly made up. I hope you have hours of joy with it!
Sounds like it will be going to bed with him as well
Glad you sold your Kaiser...

Well ill add my two cents here. Im a mod on the #1 iphone modding site, and got my iphone the day it came out. Sure out of the box the iphone is garbage ill be the first to admit that. But once you mod it you can have a prety sweet phone. For some of the features that it is lacking (not hardware specific) the biggest is MMS well guess what we already cracked that and now you can send and receive MMS with no problems. Video record, same thing it is capable of that now. Adding emus and games and multi-function task lists and pdf readers, yup can do that now as well. When they actually release trhe sdk come Feb then i can only imagine what the phone will be capable of. Now with that being said, I just bought my Tilt two weeks ago and I am quite happy with it, i still have my iphone as well. and yes for features the tilt does beat it, but for stableness and looks the iphone wins hands down. My iphone never once slowed down nor locked up on me where i had to reset it, cmon a phone should not "crash" well the tilt has a few times on me, and just switching from portrait to landscape mode is really slow. Plain in simple you really cant compair the two, if you want a stable phone with less features atm get the iphone. If you need every feature/function than get the tilt.
Hey I am new to the whole smartphone game. My initial plan was to hop on the bandwagon and purchase an Iphone, but after further review there are quite a few phones that serve my purpose's better than the Iphone. I am a college student so as you can imagine pictures and video recording are important too me, as well as video messaging. One of the things also that turned me on to the HTC camp was the fact that I can edit word doc's which you can't on Iphone (such as reports or essay's for school). Another thing I am looking for is a phone with both 3G and WiFi, I know the dual doesn't have wifi but I am also wondering how important is that too the phone. I also plan to play quite alot of movies (and of course music) on my phone. This will also be used to manage pretty much, my life as it will be my own personal assistant in every way possible. My desire is so that I don't HAVE to update my phone for quite a few years. I know the diamond doesn't come out for a few months, I can wait if need be. Now this is the catch, I am an at&t gophone customer so perferably I would like to get an unlocked phone of whichever of these phones are the best (at&t doesnt support prepaid use of at&t tilt, fyi) but I may just get a plan (and give them the damn 500 deposit, grrrr) if NEED be. I am also a big fan of touchscreen so I would love for whichever of those phones that has one of the better models/ easier use of it. Also I just moved to a new city so of course a GPS nav. would be great.
Anyways post away, thank you in advance for the help guys.
If you want a full keyboard get the TyTn 2
If you want something slightly slimmer with no keyboard get the Touch/Dual
For the most part you can emulate the Touch apps on the TyTn 2...so you kind of get the bet of both worlds.
However since your first inclination was for the iPhone I gather one of two things (or both):
1) You are an "apple" person and therefore probably don't want to tinker with your stuff to get it to work right for you.
2) You are concerned with looks and graphics above all
If either of these are the case I would wait for the Diamond as it really does appear to be much more fluid and you won't need to tinker to get it iPhone-esque. Of course, by the time they release it there will be hints of even newer device coming...
Cliff notes?
Dude, add a poll!
it really depends on your personal taste. Keeping the diamond off this review the tilt is the best among the other available options imo. I love having a full qwerty keyboard as texting and writing messages (especially for here ) is easy. The only place where it falls short is graphic and video drivers, note that i didn't say anything about hardware which is perfectly capable .. just need better drivers.
Anyways it all boils down to personal choice .. the tilt rocks imo.
p.s. CUSTEL there is dude looking for a tilt i recommended you
Well one of my biggest things is going to be both putting movies/music videos on my memory card as well as streaming videos on my phone so - these graphic and video drivers, are they major complications in that? I have read some things on the issues with playing videos on the tilt but was unsure if these have since been unresolved issues.
I am not an apple person, no. Looks I can live without but the graphics of the videos I play as well as the video recordings are of importance. I don't mind tinkering with the phone to get a better phone at all no. That is one of the things I like about these phones are that you can download diff things for them (so I've read). The reasons why I wanted the iphone are simply that, I HEARD the iphone is the best phone out. After further research I have not found that to be the case, especially in my situation. The fact that it doesn't have a video camera NOR MMS are huge faults for me. I loved the fact that it was touch screen, but seeing as there are so many more touch screen phones out there that I didn't know about opened a whole new world too me =].
And yes, the fact that better phones ARE always coming out is something that I have thought about and one of the reasons why I may scratch the diamond off my list =p
Also can somebody inform me on how too add a poll, ty.
The microSD cards are a very good solution for music and videos. Without the graphics drivers, streaming video is not a problem. Also as long as the video is decently sized to the resolution of the phone, playback should not be much of an issue if you use Coreplayer Qtv (not free software). I personally don't like the Tilt (it's too bulky) and think the Cruise is a great device.
The Diamond is another cool device, but the fact that it has no microSD slot and is not a true worldphone (like the kaiser and cruise) are negatives for me. Also I have yet to see what the battery life will be on that device, smaller battery and all. Besides the Diamond won't be out for the Americas for a bit longer.

I think MChapman was being tongue in cheek with his poll suggestion. This topic has been BEAT TO DEATH on this forum and does not deserve to be ever brought up again. EVER. What phone should I pick? Is the Iphone better? Basically no phone does everything well or else there would not be so many phones. You don't seem to want much(laugh) just everything in a small package. The iPhone is a entertainment device with minimal life organization abilities. The Tilt is a hardcore business and life organizer with adequate entertainment functions. Personally I have a Tilt that runs my life and business and an ipod touch that has 16GB of entertainment on it . They both do exaclty what I want them to do.
And if I want an all in one device, I duct tape them together

Well said..... There are so many comparisons in this forum and everyone will have an opinion. Yes, i have the Tilt also and it's the best phone on the planet... (**NOTE** For me that is) Would your "Other" be the SE Xperia X1?
I bet the Touch Diamond's battery life will be very similar to the Tilt and the Touch Cruise due to the Diamond's processor being built on a smaller 65nm process if I am correct. And assuming that the processor consumes the most amount of power in the phone, this new one processor will consume less than the ones in the Tilt and Touch Cruise.
"This topic has been BEAT TO DEATH on this forum and does not deserve to be ever brought up again. EVER."
Oh ok, I didn't know that. I have been looking for people's input on these phones all over the net with minimal results. I am basically just trying to get a sense of what are the strong suits of each phone and on the flip side, what are the negative aspects of each phone and what should I watch out for with either. If anyone of you can point me too reviews or other forum discussions that highlight thats character traits about the phone that would be fantastic.
"Personally I have a Tilt that runs my life and business and an ipod touch that has 16GB of entertainment on it "
Thats cool for you, but personally I am not trying to walk around looking like inspector gadget. That and those are two major investments, especially when you can just get a phone that can hold sd slots (which also scratches out the diamond in my list fyi, ty hambola). Same with GPS and nav, now that your phone can do this it wouldnt make sense too go out and buy ANOTHER navigation system, especially for a student on a budget =] Too be honest also if you can type relatively fast on either one (for editing word doc's) I probably won't even need a laptop =] Just one simple phone would make my life a whole lot easier, man how I love technology.
You know, after further review of each phone I have decided not to get either of the phones. Each one has its own little draw backs that nag me too the point that I don't really want to purchase the phone. Hopefully the Xperia is amazing!!! ANyone else know any other good phones that would be up my alley? Thanks guys.

Xperia does not convinced me at all. That's my opinion.
I just saw a video of the Diamond and I have to say it's a lot better than Xperia.
Hey there is a new iphone coming next month with 3g and other stuff, and I'm pretty sure you already know
Anyways...Tilt is a great choice.
Hey I'm thinking on selling mine but.. trust me is a hard choice. I really like the Tilt.
Well one of my biggest issues with the tilt is that it doesn't have a GPS nav in it which blows =[ The diamond doen't offer card slots (???? wtf???) so I can't upgrade memory or put any music/movies on any cards.
The tilt does have a GPS nav in it.
where are all these so called "Touch" apps located?
TYTNII Rocks
I have a TYTN II that rocks my world. It organises my business, and stores enough podcasts to keep me amused while flying (4 hours per week). I don't do video as am well over the porn thing although do watch Big Brother via Planet 3 here in Oz. It's bulk and I;m looking at a Diamond for my son, as 3 here has ceased selling the TYTN II. the Diamond looks pretty smik.
I'm currently using Hermes (8525) and thinking about getting Kaiser. If you have had Hermes before I'd like to hear your word of wisdom from whomever have had both devices for practical usage. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury to keep both.
What I love about the Hermes that's not found in Kaiser are flash light, IrDa, and comm manager button. On the other hand Hermes is missing GPS, bigger memory, the "possibility" of having hardware accelerated graphics, supposedly better camera, tilting hinges, and in my particular case front camera (I'm using 8525 and there's no _practical_ solution to put the front camera in and if I were to get Kaiser it better be NOT AT&T tilt that has no front camera as well).
I'm afraid I'll be missing Hermes exclusive features if I switch to Kaiser, even though I don't use those features too often. It is however very tempting especially the built in GPS feature (yes I have followed the hidden GPS thread and struck down by the bad news that we can't practically revive the chip in Hermes).
A word of advice or two from you guys would be very appreciated.
PS: I posted this in Hermes forum a while ago and I'm also interested to hear Kaiser owners' opinion about this too.

This is kind of like going onto the Corvette Club of America forum and saying " I'm thinking of trading my Chevy Malibu for a Corvette, what do you think?" My Tilt is Great. I personally have never experience any of the quirks others have complained about. If you like the new features and upgrade possibilites better. Then do it.
Out of everything that I read, I decided that it was NOT worth the upgrade. Then my Hermes started acting up BADLY with white screens and buttons that stopped working. So I reluctantly upgraded sooner than I intended.
I have loved my Kaiser. The 400mhz vs 400mhz CPU doesnt explain much why my Kaiser is so much faster than my Hermes. And I love the GPS .... and the battery life is better.
Also I never could find a radio where I could leave on 3G inside my condo and not drop calls. I tried and tried and tried. I leave 3G on my Kaiser with NO dropped calls even inside exactly where my Hermes would drop calls - and the 3G is not sucking the battery like on the Hermes.
I was the same way. I think it depends on the price that you will have to pay. I was able to get the Kaiser (Tilt) when it first came it on AT&T and I just couldn't pass it up. Now having had it for over a year, and knowing the differences, I would have paid more if I had to. I know that I may have been reluctant to pay more at the time, but it's one of those things where, "Now looking back, I would do it all over again" (but with more money ) if that makes any sense...
I've said this before elsewhere, but here goes again...
I broke my Hermes. If I had not broken it, I would not have upgraded to the Kaiser.
Now, I have a Kaiser and I don't consider it to be vastly better than the Hermes. Perhaps it was the way I use my phone that makes this the case, or perhaps it is that the O2 ROM was the limiting factor. Either way, I don't think it would tempt me to upgrade or renew my contract, so will be onto a rolling 1-month contract until a more exciting handset (am thinking Raphael) turns up.

malibu vs vette is too much of a stretch and you didn't give perspective on both sides as to comparing one to the other.
to answer cyberblue's question:
I have used hermes before though never owned one. to me built in gps is a must and i chose tilt solely because of that. if i were willing to tote a bluetooth gps device, i wouldn't have bothered getting a tilt.
if you can wait a little longer, see if the new upcoming htc devices has all that you like. mind you that infra red is probably not going to be present in newer devices.

You both totally missed my point, I was not comparing cars. What my point was, was that much like the Corvette Club of America, everyone there has one, everyone is an enthusiast or they would be part of the club and you probably will not get an unbiased opinion if that is what he was looking for?
If he was interested in unbiased reviews he should check the review sites
Again seriously?
Hey,
Im moving on from my trusty MDA and came apon a few decently priced At&t Tilts. Ive read over the driver issues and just wanted the opinions of some current and/or previous owners.
Just so you know, I have owned a Wing, MDA and currently a Blackjack2 and had flashed/upgraded the HTCs several times. Thats why I want to come back to an HTC device.
Thanks in advance.
go for it dude

Personally, I think it is a great phone.
I agree. Fully functional 3D drivers or not, this is still the most amazing phone on the market for price point. The only thing I would personally get above this phone is the touch pro....and that wont be for some time to come
I've had a tilt since oct 07. Wouldn't give it up for anything. Does it play 3d perfectly, no...but I didn't buy it to play movies & mp3 files. Does it have as quality camera as my old SE W810i? No, but with patience, it does pretty darn well. I got the tilt because it allowed me to replace a phone & PDA with one device. I use mobile office around 10-15 times a day, 20-30 text messages a day, the camera maybe once or twice a week, and it is without a doubt the best
device I've owned. it has it's quirks, but what device doesn't?
here hear, awesomest phone i have ever owned. I was looking for a phone i could replace my phone and pda with. it rocksas far as features. sure the graphics suck. but they get the job done in a pinch. weee it's the most technologicaly advanced phone that att has right now. I dont have to synch eight devices. i just got rid of my laptop. I use this for most everything. i have school comp labs for everything else. i thought about taking it back and waiting fr something better to come out. but. when the touch pro comes out it will cost 450 dollars with a new 2 year agreement. school stsrts before then anyways. HEY thanks you guysfor making this the coolest phone it can be with what is available. is there any feature that another phone has that this one does not. in america anyways. it is a business phone. it does just that. it will play most regular phone games out there. damn it doesnt play crysis at maximum detail. boo hoo. it is a freakin miracle these slow resricted devices can do what they do. having said that. im sure my opinion would be changed with a good foreign phone. hey and htc come on. what other company out there encourages hacking their phones by putting xda developers in their wiki. i have dropped this thing onto concrete hard twice and to my knowledge it hasnt phased it. oh and btw. i dont have a data plan for my phone. i am typing this on my tilt at panera bread on my hardware giant qwerty keyboard. this has taken me fifteen mins to write. do that iphone. do that old style 12 key phones. i just got the thing and i am typing fast on it. if you want a gaming phone this is not for you. if you want relatively long battery life when you surf the net using wifi get this phone. i am comparing the batt life to my sony clie which had first generation pda wifi in it. i have gone over an hour today surfing the web. i still have 20 pecent left and i started with like 60. my clie could only go for like 45 mins with a brand new battery with a slower processor. well panera bread is cosing and i should probably get home. but it isnt becase my pda ran outof juice. i have the oem batt btw. good night all. i hope this helps you in your quest fora new phone.
i have owned the tilt since Nov 2007 and it has been a excellent pocket pc/phone. what i really like about the phone is having the ability to flash the rom that chefs have to offer. it's nice to have options and incredible free applications out there offered by the programmer's.
i have been through four previous pocket pc phones and it's nice for once that there is everything packaged into one device. I use gps, wifi, watch movies, listen to mp3s, outlook/exchange, bluetooth etc.. i take the phone to the limits and it meets expectations.
despite the video driver problem, its not a big deal if you are really into eye candy.
if you have other questions, you can email me..

Nooo. Don't get it. I personally plan on selling my Tilt and shelling out some cash to get the AT&T Fuze (Touch Pro). It's much better. The retail pricing is only about $100-200 more then the Tilt's. So it'll retail for about $550/$650 w/o contract. =) This is a great deal compared to $1k. It's going to come out before year's end and AT&T data managers are currently testing the Fuze. It'll be out before 08 ends I can swear on it. It has a different color TF3D as we've seen. It has no front camera and an extra button for PTT. That's about it.
Guess how I got this info =)

Rofl. I know exactly what I'm talking about
I dont want to sound negative
but your posting on a Kaiser forum and asking people who own a Tilt if they advise you to get it... haha i got a feeling your gonna get around 90% yes...
the real test is to ask some guys who have a htc touch diamond or some of the other smart phones out there what they think of the Kaiser...
oh and my answer is yes... get it... with the right tweaks and a few apps to your liking, it will be the best phone you have owned (well atleast it is the best phone i have had)
I had mine since March. Pretty good phone. A tad on the heavy side. And depends on how you like to hold it, the little corner of the USB port may dig into your pinky. The AT&T bloatware are garbage but nothing you can't fix on your own. There are enough people that like it to get a constant supply of goodies.
Knowing what I know now, would I get it again? Probably.

I look for speed and stability in a PPC, and I'm sorry to say that once again I have not found it in a HTC phone. I previously had the S710. Compared to that, the TYTN-II is fast as lightning. But compared to previous Sony Ericsson and Palm phones, the TYTN-II is sloppy. Admittedly it has GPS and WI-FI, which the others did not. The stability is below what I think is reasonable to expect for a smartphone in 2008. The touchscreen and buttons are occasionally unresponsive, and normal operation is often replaced by random "irregularities". I soft reset the device some 1-3 times a week, because unexpected stuff just happens: ranging from missed calls, broken activesync, unable to connect to EDGE network, software crashes, buttons not working.
Yet I hold on to it. It sports a nice set of features, and the software for it is plentyfull. The stability and performance can be improved by careful configuration (involving a lot of trial-and-error), but be prepared to spend a lot of hours on it. If you are a "point-and-shoot" type of person, who just want a phone that works out of the box, you may be disappointed with this one.
At least this is my personoal experience with the phone. Your milage may vary!
If you're prepared to put up with what can at times be an annoyingly slow user interface, then I don't see why not. The feature-set is excellent, the build quality is excellent and the tilting display shows no sign of flimsy construction. It has a nice weight to it and feels comfortable to hold and use.
But the dsmn lack of drivers *REALLY* grates at me after a while, especially when switching between portrait/landscape modes. The more time goes on, the more you notice how slow it is. There are tweaks that help, for example if you set the X button to close instead of hide apps the effect of this is minimised somewhat, but that shouldn't be necessary.
Unless you have patience for a UI with an average speed of "slow" I would go for one of HTCs other offerings which actually uses the hardware it contains, although if the custom drivers that are underway reach completion, perhaps the Kaiser will be a serious contender. So if you DO buy one, you may think of it as an investment for the future

I have a Wizard (8125) and a Kaiser (Tilt) and just got a Hermes (8525) for another family member - the Kaiser obviously has the best feature set, but the build quality of the other two is better, IMO. The 8125 is clunky looking, but solid, and the spacing of the keys makes it much easier not to miss-key. The 8525 is super-solid, has the best battery cover, and I think is the best looking.
That said, I will keep using the Kaiser. I have also tried i-mate 8502 and HP iPaq 910c, and returned to the Kaiser. The chrome is wearing down on the buttons, and some of HTC's software design on it is annoying (e.g. fast backlight shutoff - fixable of course). In the inevitable comparison to iPhone 3G, the iPhone does some things amazingly well (threaded SMS, internet browsing) but still doesn't have a spreadsheet for crying out loud! I depend on Excel, use it constantly in eyecare clinic.
So despite its flaws, the Kaiser is the best thing for me - until Touch Pro for AT&T 3G is available - then I will get that - the 5 row keyboard and the VGA screen are the big pluses there, and you can never have too much memory.
You know I researched a lot before buying my tilt, knowing I would need to unlock and flash it to get the functionality I wanted. I could not be happier with my purchase. Things I know I can not do with an Iphone easily or at all at no additional cost include excel & word editing, connect to Citrix, RDP, tether my laptop by either USB or BT. As for the d3d drivers, while they would be nice I don't see them as mandatory since this is first a phone and a PDA not a iPod. That said, I have no issue other than bandwidth when I comes to streaming media through ORB to my TILT and playback is more than acceptable for me.
Just do it since your no stranger to flashing,

First off, I guess its obvious a lot of the users who browse this board would recommend the X1. My hope is that I can get some honest opinions on whether or not you guys would still invest in a X1 if you didn't have it currently.
I'm in Canada and I'm looking for a phone from my local retailer (in this case Rogers). Since I'm not just buying any unlocked phone, I don't have that many options. Its the X1, HTC Diamond of iPhone. iPhone's functions are great but I just dislike the look very much. The X1 is looking good in both appearance and cost for me.
I'm also a bit intimidated about all the customization for the X1. It's great that there are so many options but I don't know where to start. If someone can point me off in the right direction (in terms of what to install, what are must have ROMs / apps) that would be great. Especially all this WM6.1/6.5/6.5.1 I hear buzzing around.
Any help would be great appreciated.
the x1 is cool and all but its 1 year old now. You can find better phones out there. Are you interested in the updated x2? its the same just bigger screen and an accelerometer. Are you going to be at&t only? If not you should check out the Droid phone for verizon
if you can get it really cheap then go for it or get the tp2 for the bigger screen. both are pretty much one year old tech but will hold their own with the new current phones being offered.
I'm from the igloos up North so the Canadian providers are mainly Rogers and Telus and I'm with Rogers.
Seems to me that we usually get the shortest end of the stick; by the time I can pick a phone up from my local store it seems to be outdated and at the moment it seems to be my only choice. This is my first smart phone so I'm finally getting some data and I don't want to spend a whole lot.
Regardless, the X2 does look pretty awesome and I'm definitely interested. However, I don't know when or if Rogers will offer it. Is there any conformation on information like so? I think the X2 was released in Europe a few weeks ago if my research proves correct.

I love my X1, but it has old software by default. If you are into ROM flashing that isn't a problem, but if you aren't, you'll likely be happier with a Touch Pro 2.
How much are they selling it for? If it is at the same price of the iPhone 3GS, then get the iPhone, sell it as new on ebay and have enough money to buy 2 X1s.
before You'll get one read sticky about cracking. this device have a serious issue with plastic elements of housing cracking and chipping without any real reason. don't let any fool convince You, that it's a problem of only some units. most units are/will be affected. x2 however might be better, as it was built by foxconn, rather than htc.
if you can get new one less than 300$ then go for it
hi im new to all smartphones in general (live in poland and we have third world providers here )
got dilema since my contract is soon to be expired and got proposals for cheap but long contract extension (kinda normal here) phones.
Ill write what i can get :
-omnia
-xperia x1
-htc touch dual
-htc magic
-htc diamond
here is my dilema - x1 or magic
x1 comes with 4 gig sd (magic with nothing)
x1 is kinda older but when i look at hardware of lets say x2 its almost identical hence i hope for updates for x1
for magic speaks android (but new droid phones will have 1gig procesors wich worries me about its updates)
please speak from expirience.
Ill not use internet heavely (costs in orange network are radiculous) more like for IM's besides i can download apps via pc - ill be into flashing roms and stuff since i love to customize my phones.
so please be honest and no i cant afford any other phone since it would mean around 500$ and im poor bastard
cheers
If those are your options the xperia is by far the best! Okay the Omnia might not be a bad option, but I wouldn't consider the rest as in the same category.
EDIT: Magic would actually be a better choice in my opinion than Omnia, but I am still more favorable to WinMo... For now. If you don't have an affinity to Windows Mobile then the Magic might be a good choice. I prefer X1 for high res screen too. Makes for awesome Web browsing.
based on the choices you have, the x1 seems to be the better option. The new roms here make the x1 a much much better phone than out of the box so dont worry about it's initial performance once you get it. I mean after flashing a good rom, it's like having a new fone again...
Also, the x1 seems to be the only one with the keyboard amongst your other choices and for me that's a huge advantage!! I guess i'm just not made for full touch screen usage, i make too many errors typing...the next advantage would be the wvga resolution, awesome for watching movies (of course those formatted for wvga, there's a tool here to format)...
I just got my X1 last week, unlocked for $300 AUD, and after flashing a few roms its easy to find a happy place. I think its a pretty sweet device, and it can still fight it out with the newer phones.
Of the rest I've had a go at the Omnia, magic and also a touch HD, although the touch HD is pretty much the same except with no keyboard etc. I don't really like the Omnia's screen, so I would go for the Magic, the cloud concept seems pretty appealing, and its pretty slick.
sorry double post
ok so here is essential question :
Do i NEED to unlock x1 to be able to flash it etc?
Coz im long time orange user and dont plant to change it any time soon so its not nessesary for me.
as for android it has an app that blocks gprs and stuff is there simmilar thing for x1?
as for all these choices i only considered magic (for android) and experia for overall keyboard and screen that makes me horny also the camera soft on SE is allways better.
Tbh its like rollercoaster lol 1 day i want x1 more next day want magic lol
besides 1 more important thing is for it to be able to withstand 3 year contract
No you don't need to unlock it from a network to flash it, as far as I know.
I actually think, IMO, Magic has the better still camera, but I've never tried them both in same conditions. Video on X1 is much better though, even more so if you get a X1i. Also camera without a dedicated button (the Magic is missing one) can be a bit irritating.
As for apps, I think you can be covered for anything.
X1 is getting old, so 3 years might be a stretch, how much would you pay for the phone through a plan? Might be better to just buy it outright?
Also, X1 has the 3.5mm jack, and the usb port is in much better position for typing. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) the Magic has a non-mini-b port, and I have loads of those laying around, so more convenient
well you see the thing is i would get it for a 1pln lol (about 1/3 of a usd ) just becose im long withthem and its a long plan. i have no cash at all
with magic it would be the same.
so You see my point its the first time in history lol when they allow me to have PDA like phone and i dont want to get stuck on something that will be tottal crap in 1 year
FYI, the Sony XPeria X1 is only $99 from Rogers on a 3 year term. This is a fantastic price, since it was $299 on a 3 year term last week. I'm thinking of getting the X1 now, especially since I've heard that the Motorola Droid won't be coming to Rogers.

The X1 is a much higher end looking device, and will at least look good for quite a long time . The Magic on the other hand already looks old. OS wise, Android is ahead of MS in terms of GUI.
With all that being said, if you have a lot of time on your hands to tinke you'll like the X1, it is like a mini computer. The magic imo has less upgrade-ability due to its low ROM size. Eitherway, you'll likely be happy as this is your first smartphone and you have nothing to compare it too.
Lots of good info in this thread. I've almost exclusively used Symbian/S60/UIQ up until this point and have been thinking of getting a nice and relatively cheap WinMo device to get me up to speed in the WinMo world and help me tide over until the X10 hits the scene in 2 months.
There are a couple of <6 month old X1s available around where I live for a shade over US$200. Do you think that's the correct price to pay? Frankly, I'm surprised at the amount of depreciation over the past 12 months. Other phones that used to cost about $800 (TouchHD etc) have held on to their value while the X1's has just plummeted.
Anyways, the X1s that I played with were in pristine condition but I'm concerned about the cracks problem. What do you reckon would be a good approximation for a baseline production date from where the cracks problem was resolved? I tried searching through the sticky thread on the problem but couldn't really find anything specific since most people haven't posted the production dates of their X1s.
Just to tell you, the X10 is an android phone
I'd forget the X1... sure you might get an 09 batch with no case cracking issues but another common problem is that the keyboard gets sticky and soon your space bar becomes very unresponsive.
Better of getting a full touch screen phone.
X1 for me was one big bad purchase and yes I do flash the latest ROMS.
