Hi XDA
Terribly sorry if this is already somewhere on these forums, I tried searching so avoid bugging any of you but I came to no conclusion....
I currently have a regular bronze T-mobile G1 which I had factory unlocked. I also rooted the handset and updated to JF1.5. The funny thing is, is that I can't see paid apps. I know unlocked phones can't see paid apps on the market... but I wanted to know... is there a way around that?
By the way, I am currently living in Canada and running it on a rogers network... if that makes any difference.
Thanks in Advance! and again sorry to bother anyone!
You should post this in the proper sub-section "DREAM" not in development.
Not a development , but anyways
For all those living out of USA , there is a program to install in order to allow purchasing paid apps from the market
You can download the prog from here

Thanks to both of the VERY quick responses!
Sorry for posting in the wrong section of the forums, I'm a noob.

I searched the forum and looked in the informative threads and didn't find an answer to my question. Basically, I have the G1 and my friend is getting the MyTouch. I have been hacking the G1 since I got it preorder so I know about this stuff. I will need to teach my friend how to do all that for his phone. But will the roms we have now work on the MyTouch? I know it is lacking a keyboard and has some slightly different specs. But I am assuming they will work on his after proper rooting and all. And does it root the same way or is it going to be something completely different?
thanks

myTouch can not be rooted at this point hence your friend is SOL. Check Sapphire threads
Hi all,
Bear with me while I explain my case.
I have a friend in Texas that has an Android phone and I'm in England, so, all the help I can gather I will email her and if would be better if the "tutorial" have pictures if you know what I mean as she is not at all a tech person, and she is older than me !
She likes her Android phone and she said it is a G2. I don't have a clue as to the Android version and asking her this is a waste of time; it is definitely not rooted; did I mention that she is not techy? The fact is that she says the text (font?) on the interface and everywhere else is too small for her and she cannot find a way to change the font. Is it a possibility with Android? Her phone provider says it is not or they don't know.
Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Me!

There is no such thing as the G2 in the states (There is in Europe, but it's actually the HTC Hero), so I'm assuming she is talking about the HTC Magic (or here it is called the MyTouch 3G). If this is her phone, she has 1.6 (If it's the Hero, she has 1.5).
As far as I remember, there is an app called "Spare Parts" in the Market which allows you to adjust the font size, but there were problems where it would return to default size at some time (Not sure if it was when you closed the app or rebooted the phone).
@JAguirre1231
Thanks for your input. You are probably right about the 3G model thing. I will mention "Spare Parts" to her and see how she gets on with it.
After posting I've decided to search the Android section here for themes but had the feeling that everything that is done here uses the premise that everyone roots their phones but that does not happen out there in the real world where not everybody is a geek or tech savvy.
I've found some very interesting stuff using Metamorph but rooting is not an option unfortunatelly and I don't have time to dig deep right now.
Cheers!

Rooting these days can be as simple as putting a file on your sdcard, booting up and installing an app.
Unfortunately, yes, if you want a full theme, you will have to root your phone. The best you can do without a rooted phone is install themes on an alternate launcher (which will slow down the phone since you will have two launchers running).
i know it's not the right section or even appropriate at all but help is really needed.
ok first... hi,
again i know it is not appropriate and i hope that i'm not bothering Firerat.
well, i have a little problem.
i have a g1 which runs great and everything.
my fiancée saw my phone and she really got interested in it specially the market feature and she wanted one.
so i bought her a htc legend which sent her over the moon.
after starting it for the first time and after completing the setup she ran to menu looking for the market to get some games and guess what there is no market anywhere to be found and she stated crying "women" and i really don't know what to do as she refuse to root her phone or miss with it's stock status.
so i'll really appreciate it of u help me, telling me what to do. can i like acquire a market apk of any other phone and flash it through fast boot if possible or what...please help
yours
adham
p.s. i live in egypt and that's where i bought the phone "from a vodafone retail store"
This should NOT be directed at a specific user.
This is a very general question that ANYONE can answer.
The answer is this:
YOU have root access on YOUR phone, so download games or whatever from there and copy the apk off of it and install to hers.
A newbie here to all things rooting
I am going to be travelling Europe and South Asia in 2 weeks and want to take my captivate with me. IF I root the phone, will that unlock the phone so that I use a local SIM of the country that I am travelling.
Another reason I want to root is that I am sick of all the ATT bloatware, and would be nice to get some Froyo going
Could please suggest/point a relatively simple method for a linux dumb like me.
Much appreciated.
No that would be sim unlock. I am mobile and cant post links. But search that. And post in Q&A and you will get the answer.

As stated this is posted in the incorrect section ask in Q/A and you will stand a better chance of getting your answer.
As to the bloatware yes rooting will allow you to get rid of it
Dupe browser crashed. Mod please delete

Just an FYI, if you have a question, you should post it in the "Q&A" treads. Otherwise you will probably get an ear full about how it should not be in the "Development" section.
To answer your question question, no, they are two different things. You can root your phone, but you can also unlock your phone. Doing one does not do the other. You do not have to root to unlock you phone for over sea use. You do however have to root to remove all the bloatware and to be able to mod or run other programs/ROMs you wish. There are numerous treads relating to this in XDA, so you should easily be able to find out how to do both if you wish.
Hope that answers your question. And just remember to post general topics or questions in the appropriate sections.

Beat me to it.
I am currently using the Captivate on T-Mobile, and kept hearing about them offering free wifi calling on select devices. Not that I need it, but being the way I am I had to do research on the possibility.
I was curious of it it's even possible. Looking at threads like this
made me even more curious.
So, is it possible? And forgive me if this question has already been asked, but a quick google search found nothing but flaming on the subject. Thanks in advance! Learned a lot by creeping these forums, lol.
