[Q] Rooting + Unlock - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A newbie here to all things rooting
I am going to be travelling Europe and South Asia in 2 weeks and want to take my captivate with me. IF I root the phone, will that unlock the phone so that I use a local SIM of the country that I am travelling.
Another reason I want to root is that I am sick of all the ATT bloatware, and would be nice to get some Froyo going
Could please suggest/point a relatively simple method for a linux dumb like me.
Much appreciated.

No that would be sim unlock. I am mobile and cant post links. But search that. And post in Q&A and you will get the answer.

As to the bloatware yes rooting will allow you to get rid of it

Just an FYI, if you have a question, you should post it in the "Q&A" treads. Otherwise you will probably get an ear full about how it should not be in the "Development" section.
To answer your question question, no, they are two different things. You can root your phone, but you can also unlock your phone. Doing one does not do the other. You do not have to root to unlock you phone for over sea use. You do however have to root to remove all the bloatware and to be able to mod or run other programs/ROMs you wish. There are numerous treads relating to this in XDA, so you should easily be able to find out how to do both if you wish.
Hope that answers your question. And just remember to post general topics or questions in the appropriate sections.

Sorry to bother, but....I have a question.

Hi XDA
Terribly sorry if this is already somewhere on these forums, I tried searching so avoid bugging any of you but I came to no conclusion....
I currently have a regular bronze T-mobile G1 which I had factory unlocked. I also rooted the handset and updated to JF1.5. The funny thing is, is that I can't see paid apps. I know unlocked phones can't see paid apps on the market... but I wanted to know... is there a way around that?
By the way, I am currently living in Canada and running it on a rogers network... if that makes any difference.
Thanks in Advance! and again sorry to bother anyone!
You should post this in the proper sub-section "DREAM" not in development.
Not a development , but anyways
For all those living out of USA , there is a program to install in order to allow purchasing paid apps from the market
You can download the prog from here
http://strazzere.com/blog/?p=255
Thanks to both of the VERY quick responses!
Sorry for posting in the wrong section of the forums, I'm a noob.

[Q] Help Choosing Rom To Flash

I have moved his over to the appropiate section and copied and pasted my question.
I am new to this forum and apologize for my noobness in advance as i wasn't sure either to post this here or in the Android Software and Hacking General section and i appreciate any comments as i understand i am new here and have contributed nothing to this forum. Here is my dilemma, i recently purchased a t mobile g1 from a friend about two weeks ago because i was interested in the android OS. Being in the UK it is locked to the T-mobile network which my existing sim is orange. I understand that there was a developers ROM that was released (codenamed holiday (adp 1.1)) which allows other networks to be used on the g1 e.g orange etc as its a developer version. I was wondering what compatible ROMS for the g1 (htc dream) that would allow me to use my orange sim. Again i really do appreciate nay comments and help i receive and understand i have not contributed to this community and it is highly rude to ask for something when given nothing.
Changing the ROM on your device will not unlock it so that you can use it on any network. You need to get an unlock code for your device. T-Mobile US will give these out to their subscribers but I don't know about your carier. If they don't you can get it online too. They will need your phone's IMEI to generate the code. Just put in the new SIM and it will prompt you for the code regardless of the ROM you have.
isnt there such a thing as a hardware unlock though if i use a custom rom?. I brought this phone from a friend so i doubt phoning t-mobile will help get me a code.
p.s. cheers for taking the time to comment
No, I'm fairly sure the only way to unlock this device is what I posted above.
i thought you just needed a t-mob sim to login and then you were free to choose after this whole rooting/flashing thing.
its already a long time ago, so i might confuse a lot and its only that what i think to know. nothing sure..
i wanted an android phone and my friend was saying i culd get his off him and i thought that be a perfect time to get into the android os and stuff, i wasnt ure if i coulld by rooting/flashing that id be able to use another network thats why i wondered if i flashed it to a deveopler rom the adp1 one i could us another sim, i will look into the method beav_35 put but im not sure on any reputable sites to trust to do this method.

Rooting will not unlock your phone. Luckily Galaxy S devices like Vibrant or Captivate have their unlock code inside their phone. All you have to do is search "unlocking captivate" on google and you should find instructions.
If you have not rooted yet and you don't know the details I suggest you do some reading. There is a pinned thread at "Captivate General" forum that has basic readings on rooting, ODIN, CWM and what not. I could tell you the things that you ask.. but I find it very beneficial when you know what you're doing.. so that you don't do stupid stuff on your phone and possibly go beyond hard bricking.

then why waste your time answering? when i see a thread and i think "why are they asking this" i move on and dont waste my time being rude to the person..

To keep the forum cleaner, and to point you to the relevant information sources, so you know a good place to start digging (and there is LOTS of info). What will you do from there is up to you.
The Wiki, section "root", will answer most if not all of your questions.

If you are planning on using it on AT&T, you will never get anything better than edge speeds due to carrier specific hardware. If you are going to buy an N1, I would suggest you buy the one that has the AT&T 3G bands.

Just take your time and read the instructions. Rooting it is very easy, just follow the directions. You'll be better off learning it instead of someone doing it for you the way you're wanting.

Do not feel bad about the jokes, but as jammol says, take your time, do searches, learn how to, if you do not have any idea about root and everything related, it is pointless to root, even dangerous for your device, even people that have rooted many devices before are somewhat reluctant to root their note 8, incluing me, if you want to root, then get the necesary knowledge first, and then have fun rooting your device, good luck
I have been trying to figure it out on my own. I am very good with computers and custom build computers etc. But the files are different from all the tutorials I have seen. The files I download after extracting them are different than the ones in all the tutorials. So I basically need help and need someone that knows rooting to help me. And whoever said there is no point in rooting if u don't know how to root is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You can get apps on the app store that requires root access also I can get custom ROMs etc. So anyone that is willing to help me root my note 8 please comment below. BTW I'm willing to pay 10-20 dollars for someone to help me get my phone rooted.
I did not tell you that you did not know what root is, I was only trying to encourage you to investigate and learn how to do it, so, do not say I am dumb, by the way,I am not the lost one hereā€¦ anyway, good luck with that attitude
Slight contradiction?

I might be going OT here, but dude seriously. If you're good with computers, you'd have this figured out too (According and to quote you: "This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard")
I sincerely encourage you to really read and if not, read again and again to root it yourself. It's not that difficult.
If the files don't add up, try again and look where you probably went wrong.
We're here to help man, but at least try once more by yourself, for yourself. This time, cooled down and chill.
I don't see the point of rooting right now, the snapdragon model doesn't have any major roms worth switching to right now.. And I don't see why you would use anything else that needs root, simple things like adblock and such don't need root. Infact, I'm positive anything you want root for I could do without root.

LOL I am pretty decent with computers. Never used .Tar files. And have never rooted a phone. I just came from IOS to Android and am asking for someone to help guide me through rooting my phone. Is that too much to ask for? Im even offering 20 dollars to someone that does so. The reason i am asking for help is because in Obin when I click on AP to open the System files there is no .Tar file. And ive Extracted the file several times and downloaded the file over and over trying to get different results and even tried several different tutorials. So for everyone to tell me to just keep reading and educating myself on rooting is not what im asking for. Im not asking for Mentors. lol Im asking for someone to help me root my phone because i have having problems with the files etc. If the files were the same as the tutorials then i would of had my phone rooted 2 weeks ago. Ive been trying to figure this out for 2 weeks now and have found no solution. Now back to my post. If you are here to just write "Dude we are trying to help you but just do more research and figure it out on your own" then please dont write anything. Im needing someone that is expert in rooting Androids and can help me. Im not trying to become a expert at rooting android phones. Im wanting to root my phone so i can download the rooted only apps in the app store and maybe down the road put stock android on my note 8 if posible. But thats for me to decide. Post the specific questions that are tripping you up in the root threads, and people can help you catchup. It's not as hard as it seems and if you're good at computers it shouldn't take long. Paying for root makes sense at first but is a recipe for disappointment in my opinion. Friendly suggestion

Yes, i might just proceed with doing that. The problem is I am leaving for work 2maro morning and don't have time to trial and error rooting my phone and I restored my phone to root it so I want to root it before i leave 2maro so i can download all my apps etc and don't have to restore again and lose everything again. That's why I just need someone to run me through it as I don't have much time.

Dude, your 20 bucks offer doesn't matter because that's irrelevant. Xda been about customizing and learning -yourself-.
I rooted my S4 back in the days in a few minutes, if you'd read a few CF-Auto-Root threads you'll understand how dead simple rooting CAN be and you'd understand Odin/ how to place files. I encourage you to read through one and just understand how the process worked back then.
Beware: You WILL NOT trip knox, but since it's a SYSTEM ROOT you CAN'T use Magisk. No systemless-root. Banking apps will/ can fail.
The main thread already contains very simple instructions. If those aren't comprehensive, not sure who can help you further. (Select V2.5 files if you're on the LATEST firmware /recently updated to December or January patch)

Straight up....u shouldn't root. First U don't even know what u want it for. Second u need to do it yourself, which means reading, and reading and rereading that whole samfail thread, having all the files and backup files and being very prepared to get yourself out of trouble so you're not out of a phone for a couple days scrambling for help. and if someone helped you, you'll just be asking for help again when there's an update and you have to unroot update and root again. It's best to learn yourself and be prepared so you can get yourself out of a jam. I am a 11 yr xda member, and this is the first android phone in the last 8 yrs that I haven't rooted. Why well, not really a need to or want to root unless the bootloader gets unlocked to flash custom kernels and roms and get rid of the 80% charge limit. Which I believe is NOT going to happen ever with the n8. I for one am glad this root is a bit more difficult than the last 5+ yrs or so cause it separates the boys from the men with rooting. Too many lil brats brick a new device and run to insurance to save them cause they want to skip steps, not put in the time to be prepared for trouble and READ. One click root is Bull**** and shouldn't be allowed because simply too many people don't know what they are getting into...... Especially if they are coming from an iPhone?
I'm really not trying to sound like a ****. It's just that, I would never root someone else's phone and not be around that person. There is upkeep. I use to get my cousin's upgrades and give him my phone so I could upgrade every yr. Opposite yearly upgrade of me. I gave him a rooted/romed phone from the previous yr , but I would keep up with his and mine and do his rom and upgrade mods and troubleshoot it...? I like to push every phone to it's limit of what the chip can handle. Sometimes it was a lot, spending 5 hrs setting up a phone pushing the chip with overclocking, other mods, undervolting and having to wipe and redo everything over and over cause of bootloops. Not so much upkeep now though with the n8. If the bootloader gets unlocked, well awesome, and I'm down to flash away. But if it doesn't, oh well. I'm fine with the freezing apps, Samsung theme store plus other apk theme files floating around xda, poweramp with high res through aux, and using helium as a backup.
Anyways good luck and welcome to xda
Well said, rooting is something you must do by yourself
