hate to be "that guy", but if we arent talking about free, tomtom navigator 6 is where its at

Kaiser TyTN2 8925 gps software

Has anyone used the gps software very much? Better yet has anyone used it outside of the US? I've read good things about Tomtom, but as far as I know it's useless outside of North America. I'm looking for something I can use in China. I know that there are many programs here with the data but I have hardly seen this phone here so don't know if any are compatible with WM6. I have installed Google Maps which has beautiful images, but w/o Edge access it's not useful, and while the images are great there is no street data. Strangely there is no street data, but if I go to Google's China page, ditu.google.cn there is excellent street data, just no phone interface or way of making the gps work with it.
Thanks for any tips (in English or Chinese)!
I use TomTom in the UK and find it acceptable. It can be slow to update when you make a turn but whether that is due to the video drivers, TomTom itself or the GPS receiver I couldn't say.

Yes GPS works well outside the US. In in Europe and it works great.
Havent used TomTom. but i have used almost every other GPS software there is. Do a search ...some good ones are Garmin xt, Destinator 7, pocket navigator 7..
Google maps.. i didnt like. too amateur and it does have maps to all countries.
DO NOT USE Google Navigator..it %^&*ed up my phone settings and was too slow.
I use Garmin XT. My mother has a garmin Nuvi unit, and its just as good as hers only the screen is slightly smaller, but it works great! GPS has a fix for me within 10 seconds everytime.

MapKing 2007.
TomTom was the first and is still the best sat nav software.
Developed in Europe and works great.
Have used many others, including Garmin and Navman but TomTom is still the only one that has never sent me the wrong way, after 7 years of use.
http://www.compegps.com/
maybe this is something for you, the 1st software I know which is combining Vector maps AND bitmaps. Check the coverage of the Vektor maps, but for the bitmaps you can use ANY bitmaps.
I have tomtom and all available maps installed on my memory card. US, East and west Europe, Singapore, HongKong, Australia and smoething from Afrika.
The navgation so far was good on a small trip in europe, the other cards are just in case, but I will use it later this year in the US.
For Asia I am realy considering the above mentioned software, I did not have it yet, but it good a good report in a german WM magazin. With the bitmaps you cannot navigate like with Vector maps, but you see at at least where you are.
Best regards,
Claus
Nadavi just posted the info on the Polaris HTC GPS program. Of all that I tried, this is the best. Search it on this forum.
what about google maps. i have used it in a jam and thaught it was pretty good . and it is free. you do need a data plan , but in a pinch it's worth it

no voice navigation
I've tested Telenav, TomTom, and Mio Maps. Google Maps and Windows Live I really don't consider a "driving" GPS, so I wont comment on those.
Telenav wasn't great. Looks nice, but paying 9.99 extra a month to dl maps as your driving sucks. Especially as you're driving and the map just times-out.
TomTom is by far the EASIEST to install and use. Drop a CAB file in, and drag and drop the map folder on your SD card and you're ready to go. However, the maps folder is almost a gig. Super user friendly and you can find flash software to make your own POI's. I like modding TomTom, but it does move slow at times.
Mio Maps. By far the BEST looking and accuarte of all I've tried. Also easy to install on the Tilt. Maps can be chosen by state or country and loaded into the maps folder, so the maps don't take-up a lot of memory on your card. It's a european-type GPS, but its VERY nice. So far my favorite visually, though I still use TomTom for its simplicity to use.
***EDIT*** Removed RIDICULOUS insinuation of a warez offer since this post NEVER contained any of the such.
Would love a speaking GPS program for my Tilt.
Please "point me" in the "right" direction to get the tom tom navigator or some other really good speaking navigator for my Tilt.
Thank you millions.

I'm sorry for that but I am trying so hard to find good voice navigated GPS software for my Tilt and when you said that I flipped out and did't mean to post twice but this is literally the first forum I have ever registered for...and I'm not sure why that posted twice since I only posted once...
Actually, I don't care.
I read the "rules" and find in number 8 how you say temple very rude and disturbing to those of the Jewish faith.
Since I have never posted on a forum before, I feel like this was a terrible welcome to the world of forums and do not plan on visiting your forum anymore.
I know that there are forums out there who would appreciate more members and care more about how they write their rules.

What? How could you take that as anything offensive to the Jewish faith. It mentions nothing specific. The only thing offensive in rule eight is the word "liberal." lol.
Warez are illegal copies of or "pirated" software.

Providing a link is always appreciated. You are meaning this, yes?
I like it, but if you don't have a map to hand it's not exactly handy. It was mostly interesting to see the satellite locations and following the location information. (If you're a geek, you'll love it).
I am using Garmin XT (nicked it off my Dad who no longer used it), but I don't exactly use it often. For the limited GPS assisted travelling I have done, it has been more than adequate. I'll echo what someone said i that it works quite well. Get a lock within 25 seconds of walking out my front door, sometimes before I leave.
Well, you can use the Mapking softwares. This is the one i use in Beijing (version R12.0 is dedicated to the Kaiser although i know that Mapking 2007 is also working). It's working well although it's not super fancy (like Tom Tom) and the maps are pretty old especially in a country where cities change every new moon.
I have been looking for GPS programs to use in China for a while and as far as i know there is not a lot of possibilities if you want to have English maps. If you can read Chinese then you have a lot of choice.
Among the programs i have checked is Gmap, a software that can import maps from GoogleMaps (like the Google Ditu ones for China) ... but it's a bit tricky as it requieres an IBM Java platform (it won't work otherwise). I couldn't make it work on my Kaiser but i might give it a try again.
Apart from that, Destinator 6.1 might also have something soon ... but i haven't really checked yet.
Anyway, I am also curious if someone has any ideas on that matter.
PS: guys, most of your answer are far from the initial topic. The original question was not "What do I have in my nice little Kaiser?" so please if you just want to tell what software you like to use, then create another post. Thanks.
Gps in the caribbean
So far the only gps software i can usefully use in the caribbean is google maps, i am guessing that tomtom and other software manufactures not interested in doing our maps yet.

I'm sure you googled "GPS MAPS CARIBBEAN" before you made your FIRST COMPLAINING POST HERE and found the link to FREE maps of Caribbean (http://rwsmaps.griffel.se/) which was the second highest rated link on Google. If not, you may find that not only can you use the maps for free, but you can CONTRIBUTE to their development. I trust that with your assistance, the Caribbean will be well mapped in no time.

Power Manager!!

Works great!
Press and hold each profile to change settings
It's on the market
Locale also does this . its on the market too
I find locale works really well especially when using location within the situation aswell. Class app!
Don't Update "Power Manager" !
I understand how hard is it for a developer to make a decent application. I remember the hours (coding and debuging) I've spent on some crappy school projects in C++. However, that dosen't permit the dev to deceive us. The dev of Power Manager has add few features to the latest update and when you download it, you'll realize that your copy becomes a trial and it'll work for 3 days
Shame on you !
yeah, i almost install but whew. i still have it with no trial. if you want it. message me.
these days i backup all apps before updating just in case- did it with this but read the comments first anyway...so anyway i didn't update it either.....its not like i can buy the paid app anyway!! Does he realise that those of us not in USA can't buy it and are then shut out of using his app until such time as google decides to allow us to purchase apps!!!
When I install new Apps I always do "cp -r app app2" in sd-directory.
I even can't buy paid apps, because I dont see them and I also dont support it.
Someone should place a rapidshare link of the free .apk-version at the market comments to protect users from such embarrassment.

I still need to learn all these commands and locations.
I'm assuming that cp -r app app2 means that you're copying the app folder to a folder named app2? Isn't "app" in the phone's memory?
are you kidding?
because the software WAS free to use, doesn't mean you, or anybody else but the autor owns it. You don't have the right to distribute it. If an app costs money or not doesn't change the rights to the software. distributing apps that used to be free is not allowed, because it is not public domain, just because it is free.
I am embarrased about the attitude some here have just because a dev decides to now charge for his work, where he was previously not able to (due to the market not supporting it).
I even can't buy paid apps, because I dont see them and I also dont support it.

you dont support what? people producing useful apps? people charging for their work? may I ask whats your age? and your profession? I am pretty sure you don't work for a software development house, do you?
let me repeat that: while a dev can provide his software FREE OF CHARGE for as long as he wants, that doesn't make him lose the rights to his work! so stop asking for links to software that used to be free, because this still violates the rights of the owner.
if you want to use an app that costs money, buy it.
oh...and for those that cant wait the few weeks ... well ... I do understand the frustration that causes, but your rant is against selling android software per se. and come on...USD 0.99 is too much? if this is too much, then the app can't be that important to you.
how much time do you think the developer spent creating the app?

Yes, you're right. I have all apps running from my Ext2 sd-card. So there's enough space to copy the App folder several times.
I think you can also save all apps to sd card with ASTRO (Market).
don't think i'm breaking any rules with this, as it's free...
but heres the version before the update. enjoy.

also have the free slide-locker version before the annoying new one if anyone wants that?
btw, for the European users that want to buy apps, you can use SAM app market:
https://slideme.org/
they don't offer Power Manager as of yet, but I bought Advanced Taskmanager there due to not beeing able to do so from Android market yet
How pathetic.
People ***** and moan about getting better apps, but are too cheap to pay 0.99 cents for one they use.
Truly, truly patheticc.

not really =/
people are *****ing and moaning about an app that was advertised as a free app being suddenly converted to an annoying trial app without any warning.
the creator could have at least published a new app instead of trying to wipe out the free version.
i'm all for paid apps (although i'm in the Uk so i can't d/l them) but the way the Power Manager developer went about releasing was all wrong, and is going to make a lot less money because of it.
i would be glad to get the free side locker

I still don't get why you think he should have done that.
again: just because he offered the app free of charge for a period of time doesn't mean it is public domain. You guys make it sound like you OWN the app because it used to be free. maybe you should have read the license you clicked away when you opened the market app, hm?
its 100% his decision. he could also just pull the software and demand that it won't be distributed at all anymore, if he so desires.
there is a HUGE difference between not charging for something and owning the app.
There's a little difference I try to tell you:
The developer made an update which turns the app from free to trial.
So it's not like he makes a new better "power manager plus" or whatever and let the actual Power Manager for free... no, he makes the free power manager to power manager trial and offers a NEW app called "Power Manager" (wtf?), which costs money (doesn't absolutely matter how much).
Because "Power Manager Trial" is related to the old "Power Manager" (free) you are forced to do the update. You couldn't do the update, if it would cost 0.99$. No, he makes the update free for everybody and turned it to trial. It's a trap! This is a cheating way to market his app as good as possible and I DO NOT SUPPORT THIS!
That was the bad way... the good way is:
Let the app under the same name for free and don't develop on it anymore. Make a new app called "appname PLUS" (or whatever) and request money for it. The developer would be likeable for me and I would like to pay for it. It's so harmonic I would even pay for it without having new features.
I absolutely agree with the thread's name 'Don't Update "Power Manager"'.
Now the devs won't frighten me again and I hope everybody understands, why I don't pay for an app, when a dev tries to cheat on all the users, which were lovely using the (free) app.
Fair play at the Android Market!
I'm with Meltus and MacFloid on this 100% The old app should've remained free, and all development stopped on it, rather than a bait-and-switch. Now granted, it tells you that it is now a trial app, and you are not forced to update, but that does not make it any less disappointing. I'm all for paid apps, but keep the free apps free, and if you want to make money off that app, release a new, more advanced version, and charge for that... but don't trick your supporters into thinking the app is free, and then quickly throw in a trial period, possibly without them even realizing it. I wasn't happy with the way the dev for "Task Manager for Root Users" handled it either, but even that wasn't as bad as the dev for Power Manager. At least I noticed the trial period warning before I hit update...
-John
BTW... anyone happen to have an .apk of the old, free "Task Manager for Root Users" handy?
I agree that the way this was done was underhanded. This morning, when I first saw the update, the only new comment in the description was "3/6 UPDATE****." There was no mention of the change. It was a blatant trick to force his >250,000 downloads to pay him 99 cents in three days or else. I almost clicked update, until I noticed every comment had one star. Now that I checked it again (three hours later), he changed the description to say it's changing to a three day trial. I understand that it is his right to do this, but the fact remains that his original goal was to fool us into clicking update by not telling us it's a trial version. I will not support this dev because of his methods. How do I know that the $0.99 one won't eventually expire and I'll have to buy a $2.50 version now that I know his business tactics. There are plenty of other ways to convert your free app to a paid one. Task Manager for example. He simply removed the free version from the market and released Advanced Task Manager. He didn't try to forcibly remove the free one from my phone. I can respect this and I supported that dev by buying his app. He also could have left the free one alone and made a paid one with new features. I can think of a few new features off the top of my head. For example, DxTop allows apps to have widgets built in to them. He could make a widget pack built in to his new Power Manager. Options for power graphs and various toggle switches to be put right on the home screen. If something like this was added in I would reconsider buying it. My advice to this dev is either completely pull the free/trial version from the market and hope people have a short memory, or completely restore your free version and give the paid one some new innovation. You could even release updates to the free one that do nothing but add a one time pop up that advertise all the new features added to Power Manager Pro. That was the method that got me to pay for Discover Pro.
However I don't agree with people asking for the apk files of the free task manager and slide to unlock programs. Those programs were legitimacy pulled from the market and replaced with superior versions. You still should support the devs that put forth the effort and not blindly lash out at every dev that decides to start charging for their software.

UK newspapers FREE

Eventually a FREE app for the most read papers in the UK!!!!
Name is Newspapers UK free, I am trying to attach a Qcode but it's my first try at this, so be gentle if it doesn't work...
Happy reading...
sweet, good find
Trying the qcode attachment again...let's see if it works this time...
Ok...It seems to work... it redirects to a page that redirects to the android market... I hoped to skip the double linking, but in the end it seems to do what I wanted, so it should be fine. Happy reading!
Yeah I found this the other day too by looking at all apps in marketplace and sorting by popularity.
Really quite good, it basically looks at the websites for the newspapers

Tell us what apps you think are good or worthy that aren't on google's market

This topic is simple. Share any apps you can think of that are good but aren't available in the regular market (anymore). I'm not necessarily looking for apks, but more like where they can be found. For example, slideme is a kind of market but isn't affiliated with google. Many apps that were on the regular market went there when google pulled them from the regular market. Don't post paid for apps or the market like program that has free to download paid apps, I'm not interested in that. A few that I can think of are music junk, better keyboard, and the "oid" old school console emulators (I forgot the guy's nickname).
In the past, someone got uptight when posting links to apps that were not paid programs but also couldn't be found, at the time, in the regular market. I don't know what to say or suggest about that. It's obvious that I'm NOT talking about warez, okay?! I'm not talking about stuff like swype either. Even though it's not a paid app, the people who police the forum will have a fit even if you talk about where it could be found. I'm not, for the umpteenth time, talking about shady stuff. I'm talking about apps that got the boot on google's official market, for whatever reason, but are on a third party market now for download (free and paid versions). My purpose is just to remind, to those who may have forgotten about cool programs, or people that haven't been in the android scene for very long. I forgot where I saw something similar to this but the responses from other members came up with quite a lot of very cool or useful or essential tools and apps for android. People were like, "oh yeah, I remember that app," or were pleasantly surprised when someone suggested something that was a good find but some people didn't know it existed.
I made my couple of suggestions earlier in this post, so go ahead and suggest away!
bettercut seems to be gone. It's a better version of Anycut that allows you to create custom icons/shortcuts.
Where can one find better keyboard. I paid for it on my Droid 1 and since its gone from the market can't find it anymore. And y on earth was it pulled? Anyone know?
BuzzBox. I know they were blatantly ripping content from news sites and putting it in a standard, ad-free format, but dammit, that was the point!

Has information about other markets too. Slideme.org and amazon. Amazon, I can't get it working even though I have an amazon account and I am in the us. Says it isn't available in my region.
I haven't found any apps yet but I did run across some market alternatives.
