Since previous thread was locked, figured id try again in a new section...
Ok folks, I left the android scene about 2 months ago, and when I came back, theres ROMs coming quicker than I can handle, and all of a sudden I have at least 5 to choose from, including multiple methods to obtain Apps2Sd.
I decided to try the new "Hero w/Rosie" build, and well it looks pretty nice from the pictures, but its a b**ch to put on the phone. I have a PVT Android G1, newest radio, newest SPL (Haykuro's) and newest recovery, with the tweaks. I also have a linux distro and paragon partition manager, all the required tools (besides the actual ROM and the app_s)
So I have the card partitioned, ext2 and one fat32. I also have the apps2sd located on root of the fat32 partition. I followed Lawrences tutorial for installing and when it came down to typing the commands in terminal to copy the app_s to the /system/sd, it stops withing 2 minutes to tell me theres no space left.
So I tried copying the app_s on the actual ext2 partition (Spent a good 4 hours getting Windows 7, Windows XP, and Ubuntu 9.04 to boot through my bootloader) and still no luck, whats even worse is my sd card cant be used at all by the phone. Ignoring the new problems, I typed busybox df -h and to my surprise, /system/sd did not exist, hence my ext2 partition wasnt being picked up at all by the phone....
Im at a complete halt and have NO clue what to do next, can anyone lend me some of their time and help me?
The modified boot image should automatically detect the ext2 partition and mount it if you did the partitioning correctly.
If it's not mounted, /system/sd is just a normal folder under /system, which explains the not enough space problem.
What you should do is check whether the EXT2 partition is the SECOND partition on your SD card and it should be a MAIN not EXTENDED partition.
Ironically, ive done that as well.... I used paragon to make an extended partition in the beginning and that didnt work, so then i tried it again at the end. Both did not work, but I shall try again and let you know how it goes. Maybe my SD card is shot, since it doesnt want to work at all....
Ill post as soon as I try again
Well... amazingly it worked this time! Surprisingly, I did the same steps as I have been doing, but I'm guessing this time what made the difference was extracting the app_s in linux and then copying it straight to, then unmounting both parititions. very odd, but thank you so much!

i just installed jesus freak 1.5. i also purchased a 16gb micro sdhc card. I would like to know how to get apps to sd running correctly. I have followed another method and messed up the sd card. so i purchased a brand new one and before i even take it out of the package, i would like to talk to someone that has had sucesssful experience.
Thanx in Advance
A2SD in a Nutshell
the essence of apps2sd is:
1) creating a vfat/fat32 partition for storing user data
2) creating a second partition, ext2 to hold your apps and caches
3) creating directories within the ext2 partition on the SD to house your caches and apps
4) copying your apps and caches to the SD within the appropriate directories on the ext2 partition
5) rebooting within recovery console and deleting the original app and cache directories, AND
6) symbolically linking the ext2 apps/cache folders on the SD to the appropriate system partition folder names
7) rebooting to android and testing apps to determine which need to be reinstalled or reconfigured
your ext2 partition need not be very large relative to the volume of the SD; half a gig is normally adequate
pre-requisites:
you will need regular access to an OS that supports the ext2 filesystem, like linux. this is important because if your ext2 partition ever becomes damaged, the linux system has the tools to fix the ext2 filesystem errors.
you will need to know the commands for creating partitions on your SD
you should know how to use ADB to connect to your G1's shell, though this is optional
you need to know how to (re)boot to the recovery console and use its shell
you need to be familiar with the commands required to copy directories, create and delete directories, and create symbolic links
There are other Threads that have other programs and tutorials, but I used this one the other day on a JF 1.5 and it worked well.

Only issue I had was I had to move JF Updater back to Phone from SD , but that could have been a glitch when the phone checked for an update. The two apps used AppstoSD2 and a2sd pretty much do everything for you , very minimal command line required on your part.
Only thing to make it better would be an interface to either move the apps back to phone or integrate it so it would ask you when you install an app where to put it. But I am very happy with it. 16GB might be over kill , I have a 8 GB but they say not to go over 1.5 GB with the Ext2 partition, so while you will have 6.5 ( relative ) GB of space for Movies,Images, MP3's, Uninstalled apps, you are really limited to the 1.5GB for apps , well plus internal phone memory I guess. But for phone apps that's probably way more than enough.
question: how do you partition a 16gb sdcard? all the numbers and all that. ive done an 8 gb sd card and that was easy cause i was working with mb's. now with gb im lost. i got to parted and i typed up print and got 16.1gb if you could help me with the numbers for fat32,ext2/3,linux-swap. i would greatly appreciate it...
Personally, I would reccoment switching to a Cyanogen ROM. It's based off the same source as JF, but one of the features it has is automatic Apps2SD. This means you but have to push files here and there, whuch believe me can be a pain. It does still require an ext partition which you would have to format your self, but after that it will work without and modifications.
Do no more then 512 MB for your ext2(3,4) partition
Follow this guide for the card partitioning. Flash CM's rom and it will do apps2sd for you automatically.
Your other card is most likely not all lost and could be salvaged still, I would look into it if I was you, 16gb cards are not cheap.
And for the last time: it is Jeusus FREKE not Jesus Freak, Have some respect for the one who layed the foundation for us, at least enough to spell his name correctly.

I second that, and also jf won't be doing ROM any more :[

Hello. I've had my g1 for a while now and have learned almost everything there is to update, edit, and mess with the g1.
Problem is I never had a good memory card so I never learned anything related to Apps 2 SD. Now I have one lol.
So I got my 8gb class 6 card today and was really excited to update to the newest JACHero rom, which I had been running previously. Problem is, I can't seem to create the EXT3 partition correctly.
I've searched over XDA for guides and have used two, which haven't helped me.
I use Paragon, format the card and try to add a 600 mb ext3 partition. When everything is formatting, adding, etc, I eventually get a message telling me to restart my computer (the guide told me this would happen). So I keep going and restart the computer, but on boot, when its supposed to finish the thing, it seems like it finished, saying some error.
Now I got back to my desktop and see that in Paragon, I have the two partitions. I'm sure the fat32 is working fine, but it also shows the ext3 partition, so I thought it was ok. When I update my phone though, I end up in a boot loop, so I'm pretty sure the problem is with the SD card being incorrectly formatted.
Sorry for making a stupid post like this, but I'm getting kinda tired and annoyed lol. Thanks for any help you can offer!
The only thing I can think is downloading Cyan's 1.3.1 recovery and run the "fix etx3 file extensions" command. If that fails run it twice. After fixing the ext3 extensions re-flash and see if that helps.
what i suggest doing is using sdsplit (can be found with a small search) to ext2 then going into console in recovery and typing upgrade_fs to upgrade the ext2 to ext3 . Myself i dont like paragon or any windows partition program becuase i always have problems with them lol.
Or use Ubuntu.
Or use cyanogen's recovery image lol.

I used a thread in the development area, was able to do ir in terminal emulator. It was easy, then like other said I used CM 1.3.1 Recovey to make it EXT3. It was really simple. The thread had three parts to it so read carefully. I believe it is on the first or second page.
If you try to format in Paragon, it will ask you to reboot your computer to finish.
I've never had luck with that.
So try this:
Put your sdcard in your computer.
Using Paragon, delete all the partitions (make sure you apply the changes).
Then, one by one, create & format your partitions...
1. Create a Fat32 partition (7gb, or whatever size you want)
2. Apply that setting.
3. Create a Ext3 partition (use all the remaining space EXCEPT 24 or 32mb for the swap)
4. Apply that setting
5. Create a Linux Swap (NOT Linux Swap 2) with whatever is left.
6. Apply that setting.
7. Safely eject the card from your computer.
If you do it that way, you won't have to reboot.
I also am almost willing to bet that you are using an x64 version of Windows, right? Doesn't really matter though, this works for 32 or 64 bit.
Sorry if this has been adressed before, but i did use the search and i cannot quite figure out what to do next. I might have dropped my phone the other day, and since then none of my apps run from the SD becase it thinks that it was ejected. So, i wiped and installed a clean JackXrom again, and it was fine for about 20 min, then phone locked up, and when i restarted, i get the same problem. Should i format the partitions on the card perhaps? I was trying to avoid that, so any work around would be helpfull.

Thanks.

sounds like a corrupted partition try repair ext file systems if that dosent work youve got to format partition and reinstall all apps.
btw does youre fat32 partition work?

If it only happened once it shouldn't be an issue, but if it does it wouldn't hurt to format your ext.
In recovery
mount -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd
rm -r /system/sd/*
I tried repairing my ext, no luck.
Whenever i try to mount in recovery console i get error : No such file or directory

Sounds like you need to delete the partition and make a new one, as it can't be read. If you're going to use parted from you're phone then you'll probably have to start over and recreate fat (and linux-swap if you had one) too. If you're using paragon or Gparted you should be able to recreate just your ext.
I cant recall which tutorial i fallowed, but it was all done through the terminal or recovery. Could you possibly point me to the right thread?

if you can remember the start and end of youre ext partition i think you can do this in parted by typing print then note down the start and end then type mkpartfs primary ext2 start - end

Here you go, follow the second section.
http://android-simplicity.blogspot.com/2009/08/how-to-6-how-to-partition-your-sdcard.html
Everytime i try to mount in recovery i get "mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 on /sdcard failed: device or resource busy"
I'm lost.
pull your battery our for 30 seconds or so. remove your sd card then reinsert it and then try again. if that doesnt work then do what the others guys have said and try to reformat your sd card and start from scratch.

Actually, with Parted you can just rm and mkpartfs any partition you want without affecting the other partitions.
I bit the bullet and just formated all the partitions.
Thanks anyways guys.
My advice for next time or any body else reading would be to download a live CD for ubuntu or fedora or similar and boot your PC off that - it's graphical and v. easy.
Or just dump windows altogether and go for linux ;-)
Smiffy.

Yeah Gparted is amazing problem is then you have to walk the person through downloading, burning the image...which can be painful.
This is still happening, fresh format on sd card partitios and a wipe and clean install of Jacxrom.
Bad sd card? Or the phone?
JACxROM [v1.3]
I am attempting to flash to this ROM. Everything seems to go as describen in other posts, but when I power up the phone, I never make it past the splash screen. Any thoughts??
sorry

Bump, dead SD card?
partition corrupted anyway to recover?
I need help please!
I was running cyanogen 4.0.3.1 just installed today morning then changed theme to enoch 1.12 the newest one that worked fine. Updated the browser to loccys Then installed the HTC music and when finally rebooted the phone it was working fine until I noticed I had none of my apps on the sdcard.
All I have is syste/app folder which runs internally I think everything else does not work. It's like my sdcard is not in.
I shutdown rebooted and waited. Then removed sdcard rebooted and inserted the card one fully powered on and it is saying it wants to format it.
I get home turn my ubuntu system on and it detects it as a ext3 partition yet nothing inside. and now no fat32 partition or linux-swap.
anyways to recover or am I SOL?
Ive tried installing Cyanogen about 10 times on my G1 and it always ends up the same no matter what guide i use. Ive tried so many different "stable" versions of Cyanogen i dont even know where to begin. I downgrade to RC29 fine, Install the radio update, and gain root access. Then i boot into the Home+Power menu and install Cyanogen through the Alt+S install prompt. Then the phone reboots and either hangs at the G1 screen or loads to the Cyanogen (Blue text) Android screen and hangs there and the screen eventually goes black.
Another time i installed a more recent version of Cyanogen, After about 5 minutes of sitting at the android screen it would load, but all the applications would instantly crash and i would have no choice but to turn the phone off. Does anyone have any idea what im doing wrong. Ive been searching every android forum for the past 4 days and cant seem to find a solution to solve this problem.
I don't know if this will work since you don't have a Cyanogen ROM to begin with, but you might try the Cyanogen updater app in the market. It is unbelievably easy and does everything for you from downloading the rom to rebooting into recovery and automatically flashing it.
Did you partition you sd? I am pretty sure any cyan mod requires a fat32 and ext2 oartition for the auto apps2sd.

Nah, it works fine without an ext2 partition, once you create one it will copy your apps over and set it up on boot. It does seem to have issues when the partitioning isn't right though. I've found doing partitioning in recovery console most reliable.
I have the same problem and to me it DOes have issue when the partitioning isnt right cuz I failed the partition... in console it just didnt work, and now everytime I try to reinstall the rom it turn black after the blue android logo...and from there Im stuck, I just dont know what to do to make it work...
have you tried checking the md5sum to see if you got a bad download. i got one once and nothing would work
MD5 sum matches up fine. Is there anything else i should be adding to this procedure?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548924
I do this guide word for word and end up with that black screen i was describing before every time.
Install CyanogenMOD 4.0.1 (Stable), Right after that section of the guide when i reboot my phone, i get the black screen after the android logo sits for about 5-10 minutes and i cant continue with the guide any further although im assuming the other guides after this are optional.
have you tried the latest 4.0.4 rom?
Yessir i have. Ive tried 4.0.2 and older versions as well. No luck just different problems.
Can we install another rom other than cyanogen on the cyanogen recovery? cuz if so ill try to install a rom that dont have app2sd just to see...
Ive find my problem now my cyanogen work...it was my sd card that is not well partitioned even tough I reformated it to fat32 it just wont work..so after installin the cyanogen rom i just removed the sd card and it worked fine...so I guess ill go buy a already partitioned sdcard cuz im havin problem with theses...
I can't believe that no one has said this to the op but did you wipe before flashing
yea wiped... but now how to I proceed? I need an sd card...
If I partition my sd card outside of the cellphone and put it in, will cynogen rom will recognize that app2sd is possible or I will need to reinstall the rom?
I was suggesting wiping to the op mesh, forken, yes you can partion the card outside the phone as long as you have a fat32 partion on there since it is the only file type that the phone will recongize as a non operating storage place for your roms and other files
partitioning is so simple, just use console and follow the guides. Make sure you know what size your card is and you will be fine. You can't buy a partitioned sd card so your gonna have to figure it out.
once in recovery goto console
hit enter after each line
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
print (this will give you your sd size in mb)
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 xxxx (xxxx is the size you get in print MINUS 512)
mkpartfs primary ext2 xxxx xxxx (first xxxx is the size of your sd MINUS 512, like we just did. 2ND xxxx is the full size of your sd)
then goto recovery and click fix/repair ext filesystems.
well yes you can buy a pre partion, theres a android website where you can buy pre partition sd card anyway you like it...
the problem is that my sd card is bugged now I think I need to fix it before trying to partition it again...cuz it wrongly partitioned..
Really you can buy pre partion cards, I think I just found my next scheme to make money since I can use the partion editor in ubuntu in 3 minutes so there is 60 minutes in an hour, so that's 20 cards an hour and I am lazy so 5 cards a day. How much is the mark up on these pre partion cards, I can out do them by 50 cents, make a link to my website for them in my sig and prob make a little profit, yay, go ignorance and laziness
ahah ill post it...
Do you know if I can fix a wrongly partitioned sd card... with just trying to partition it correctly? or I need to fix it first?
Sure, wipe it completely clean, it's called reformating. Make new partions, whichever way you are using for partion does not seem to be working for you so I would suggest trying to find another way, try googling gparted like I told you before to do and give that a try
just format the card to FAT32. You don't need an ext partition to run cyanogen, you just need it if you want apps2sd. And do a low level (not quick) format.
ive tried to reformat to fat32 and it does the same thing...
I got a shiny new class 6 16GB sd card. I partitioned it at about 15.5GB fat32 and 512 ext2, using the info in cyanogen's wiki: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Apps2SD_On_CyanogenMod
From there I did the ext3 and then the ext4 updates.
Although I've searched for answers for a few hours now, I've been unable to determine why the device slows to a crawl at each point of user interaction at this point. Even unlocking the screen can time out...
I backed out the changes and copied the apps back over to internal storage and everything is zippy again, so at this point I am looking for suggestions. One thing I noticed was that when I used parted to delete the ext partition so the apps wouldn't go back to the card on the next boot, it still listed the ext partition as ext2. Can someone running ext3 or 4 let me know whether parted lists their partitions as such or if they are always reported as ext2?
What other techniques should I try? I would very much like to make this work as I get constant low-space warnings in my current setup. Thanks.

EDIT: lol thought you were the OP
A more careful walk through the partitioning process and I can confirm that everything works as expected, as well as confirming that if upgrade_fs fails, then ext2 is a total dog. One particularly confusing thing was tracking down whether a swap partition was needed or not, but on the latest cyan roms it isn't so I skipped that one.
