Bettercut/Anycut New Message Shortcut - G1 Apps and Games

Hello to all. I was hoping someone would be able to tell me if a shortcut could be created with Bettercut/Anycut that would create a new message? I know that a direct shortcut to a specific contact can be created easily with these apps, but I was hoping a shortcut to a blank message that I could then choose the contact could be created. I use Chompsms as my default sms app (don't know if that matters) but would like the shortcut to use Chomp to create the blank message but the Android messaging app would be fine too. I know that Bettercut/Anycut have the make your own option and that it might be possible to create this shortcut that I am looking for. Unfortunately I am not knowledgeable enough to create this shortcut myself and my searches have come up empty so far (I tried many forums with no success). If anyone would be willing to help me with this I would greatly appreciate it and I'm sure others would as well. I know that it only takes a few seconds to open Chomp and click new message but a shortcut direct from the home screen would really be awesome. Thanks in advance for the help (If in fact this is even possible). I know this is probably really easy for a lot of the users here but im just no good at stuff like this. Hope someone can help.

You can make a "contact" and just name it something like "Blank" then just put a single number, 1 for example, for the phone number. Then use that. When it pops up the message for it, just erase the "Blank <1>" from the To: field, and put in which ever contact you want. Not really blank, but does the job good enough I'd say. Only one press and one button click to erase the "Blank <1>" thing from the To field.

using Any Cut, you can select "Make your own" and enter the following to create a new SMS shortcut:
Action: android.intent.action.SENDTO
Data: sms:
Type: <leave this blank>
Works on my rooted Hero nordic, YMMV. You can probaby enter "mms:" in the Data field to make the new message an MMS, but I haven't tried that.
Good luck!

Could they have made it any more difficult to start a new SMS?

At minimum, 5 fiddly clicks from the Today screen to editing a new SMS.
Anyone know a good short-cut?
Please ignore me...
Just found this thread on page 2:

thanks!
this already have an open thread with 2 cabs in it I perfer the cab I posted but anyway try searching first next time buddy!
You may want to check out PocketCM. I love the interface and the Threaded SMS view. Very simple and clean.
You simply click contacts, click the contact and then click SMS. there you will see all sms conversations (which you can scroll) your messages are a different color then the contacts and a text input area at the bottom where you just start typing and click send.
I know this isn't what you were talking about but i have gotten very use to this and found it much faster after using it for a couple of months.

As I mentioned in one of the other threads, what I do is start with the contact... from the Today screen, click contacts, select your contact whichever way you like to do, then select "send text message". You're now at the point of editing a new text message. Since all the steps you did to select a contact you would have had to do anyway, those clicks were all "free". This is actually much shorter than if you had the "new" command that people are clamoring for.

Mail icon launches SMS/MMS?

For some reason my mail icon on the HTC home screen occasionally launches SMS/MMS. It seems to happen only after I launch SMS using the text message button. Is there a way to make the mail icon permanently launch Outlook, and the text message icon permanently launch SMS, like it should work? Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I have found a solution!!!
1 - Make sure the "E-Mail Sample" account is deleted out of your accounts.
*** NOTE: If you don't delete this account first, this fix won't work! Changing the registry key below won't work. The only thing you can do is hard reset. I found that out the hard way. At least that's how it worked for me.
2 - Make sure Outlook is set up to check your mail
3 - Using a registry editor, go to HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Home, and change "AlwaysOpenMailFolder" from 1 to 0.
Using the above solution, the Outlook icon should ALWAYS open Outlook, and the SMS icon should ALWAYS open SMS.
I had this issue when I disabled "Display account picker when opening Messaging".
If this is disabled I would suggest enabling it and seeing if you still have this problem, although I didn't suffer from this randomly occuring, mine always went through to SMS after disabling this.
The option is available in messaging under
Menu -> Tools -> Options

Yea, Ive tried that. The only problem is that if I re-enable that option, then I have to choose Outlook from the list. I just want to click the icon and go straight to Outlook e-mail.
Sorry Mike - I didn't mean to post in Kaiser Upgrading.
Anyone else have this same problem with the Outlook icon?
Same thing here
Running the HTC Rom. Does this work correctly for anyone, where you hit the Outlook button and it opens Outlook, and SMS/MMS opens the correct folder?

No, I seem to have the same issue.
I have seen this on all WM6 roms I have used on Hermes and Kaisers
So there's no way to force it to always open Outlook? There has to be a reg tweak or something. Maybe there is a way to change that icon's path so that it points to Outlook. If someone knew where that icon's path was stored, maybe we could look at it in Resco and see what it points to.
Anyone else have ideas?
I don't know how to fix it, but I can add this - it takes me to the account I last had open when I go to Messaging. So if I was last in the GMail account, that's where I land.
Yea that's true. But the design is just akward. I mean, the SMS icon ALWAYS takes you to SMS, without exception. But the Outlook icon just opens up the last messaging app you used? Weird. I need quick access to Outlook every time HTC!
Here, copy and paste this in notepad and make a new link the way you did the SMS one and it should take you to the outlook inbox. -
99#\Windows\tmail.exe -service "ActiveSync" -to "" -body ""

Great! I actually used:
99#\Windows\tmail.exe -service "ActiveSync"
because the whole thing was taking me to a new outlook message. By only using the above it takes me to the Outlook Inbox directly every time even if I had previously chosen SMS/MMS.
So, now the question is, how do I remap the Outlook icon on the home screen so that it uses this new path? Any ideas?

It's actually supposed to open a new email message, but so is the SMS one and it still only takes you to the inbox so I didn't figure it needed to be edited. Glad you figured out how to edit it though.

That I don't know, I don't even like the HTC home app so I never use it. I'm guessing it has an xml file somewhere that if you find it you'll be able to edit the icon to point to that link, but I could be wrong. Somewhere on here theres an app that will allow you to edit the look of HTC home, I think it's in the development and hacking forum in the top area of xda-devs (hopefully you understand where I mean) and you might try asking the developer of that app if he could help you change that, or at least tell you where you can change it and how to do it.
Yea, I messaged the developer and haven't heard back. Anyone have any other ideas on this?

jackjohnson or xeno1: Can a similar approach be used to get a "single click" shortcut on the today screen that opens a new, blank SMS? If so please provide just a bit more detail. I tried the procedure above just to see if I could get it to work and nothing I tried did anything. Thanks in advance.

I'm honestly not sure, but have you tried something like this?:
99#\Windows\tmail.exe -service "SMS" -to "" -body ""
or
99#\Windows\tmail.exe -service "MMS" -to "" -body ""
or some variation thereof?
No

Thanks for the tip. I have not tried it as I am unsure of the basic method. Do I copy an existing shortcut .lnk file and edit the location it goes to or do I make a text file with this content and then rename the file and extension.

You could do that. I personally just make a text file with this information in Notepad. Make sure to choose "Save As Type: All Files", and for the filename, make sure you end it with ".lnk". Then copy that file to your PPC (usually to "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\" - which will show up in the programs list). From there, just tap it once and it should run.
Since you're a noob at shortcuts (as I am too), you may want to create a test shortcut that you KNOW works, like the one I made:
99#\Windows\tmail.exe -service "ActiveSync"
That should launch Outlook. This will just give you a feel for whether or not you've got the shortcut thing down. Once that works, you know you're doing it right. I only say to do this because if your shortcut is invalid, it usually won't do anything when you click it (no errors, nothing), so it's hard to tell if you got it wrong.
Also, I just did a search. I haven't looked at all these threads, but have you guys seen them? They are all related to SMS shortcuts. They may be able to help you all:

Hope that helps.
Ok, for you SMS shortcut guys, I tested this shortcut and it works. Turns out it was:
99#\Windows\tmail.exe -service "SMS" -to ""
You can create your own shortcut, or use the one I uploaded. You can rename the file to whatever you want (the shortcut filename is how it actually appears in the menu). If you stick it in "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs", then you can add it to Start Menu using the "Menus" control panel app, and it will always be right there when you want to do a new SMS.

Quick access to SMS?

Hi!
I'm quite desperate. I'd like to start SMS on my Kaiser with one or two clicks. So please recommend me how to make my SMS box the default message box (I'm not using MMS, who does anyway... I mean SMS are so much more popular) and/or direct "Compose a new SMS" or so. I also use HTC Home. Ideally I'd like to add a button in HTC Home which would directly open a new SMS (not MMS).
And yes, I did use Google "site:forum.xda-developers.com Kaiser SMS" + various combinations of words "default", "folder", "quick", "fast", "button", "MMS"...
I also tried several registry and other things tweakers.
Thanks
Btw, if you could recommend an application for quick taking notes, something like primitive drawing or so... PhatPad maybe?
um htc home (with the big clock) has it with one click..
I don't really understand your request, but this might be what your after? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2287306&postcount=6
EDIT:
Also,
When viewing your SMS's do: Menu, Tools, Options and Untick "Display account picker when opening Messaging".

Try installing HTC action screen. It will map the left softkey to be able to create new mms/sms/email/apointment/contact, all with one click of the button. That might be what you're looking for.
Hi,
I am also quite desperate for this. I will try to explain what is that we are after.
When composing a new SMS message we need to follow the following steps.
1. Go to Messaging Application
2. Select SMS \ MMS
3. Click on Menu
4. Click on New
5. Now we need to select SMS from the list that shows MMS / SMS / Voicemail.
Now here is the problem, we would like to have SMS as the first option if possible (It helps save the click I need to do, if I am using the D-Pad), Alternatively, a direct link to just start composing a new SMS message directly without going through multiple menus.
Thanks
Manik
Hi,
I missed the link of my previous post (#3). Sorry. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2287306&postcount=6

wow, from the main screen I tap 4 times with my finger and I'm good to go. That really isn't that much work.

Well, I click on the the envelope icon (1), then I have to click on "Menu" (2), "Go To" (3), "Text meddages" (4), "Menu" (5), "New" (6). This makes SIX clicks.
for me,
Envelope, menu, new, and sms..
Done.
After clicking the envelope, if it opens to email press the 5 way to the right and it will bring up SMS.

any cab for txt message contact to guess names?

hey there,
i just recently update my att tilt to a new rom that was generously created by someone here. what i notice is the text messaging function lost one thing that i would like back. on the old default rom, if i was to start typing in the name of the person i am trying to send a message, the contact would list a few ppl that would be my possible choice. as of right now i have to go to menu and add reciept and i think that just takes to long. any cabs out there to fix this?
thanks in advance
try this
i had that same problem, but i found out that if i type the name and just hit space, it will show up at the bottom and you can select from a single-line menu and use the left and right d-pad buttons to select your contact without going through the hassle of adding a recipient and all that...
hopefully that helps?
wow that did the trick!

Dialer app - specific functions for kid phone

Hello guys,
I was looking for kids mode like the one from Samsung. Unfortunately my kid's phone is not samsung and i wasnt able to port the application to work on Sony Device.
The main reason for this is that they had a Dialer application for kids which shows no phone number but ONLY the name of the mother/father contacts while calling. I want to use this function to make the phone more secure in case is stolen or robbed. As well it offers to block any other incoming calls except the selected ones.
@ktmom suggested me to try with a Tasker. I've never been experience a similar software for this kind of things.
Could you please gimme some advices or help regarding my needs and suggest me from where to start.
Thanks in advance.
Hi Ho [emoji16]
The plan I would start with is to create a shortcut on the desktop or a notification with call mom (or dad) buttons. Then use tasker to directly dial the numbers (as variables) without having them entered into the phone's contacts.
The trick is the dialer history will keep a history of called numbers, but I think that can be deleted; though we may need one or two plugins to tasker to achieve that reliably.
If this is in line with your goals, then I'll be happy to create a task or two to handle this that you can import. That is easier than teething to develop it yourself as a beginner.
I'm at the airport waiting for my daughter's flight, but let me know if this will work, or any ideas you have.
Sure, let's do it like that with your help. And in the process of developing we can sharpen it.
BTW thank you so much for your help and patience. I do really appreciate your help. ????
I actually just got home. Is there a timeframe for this? I'm thinking Christmas or similar. Otherwise I'll spend some time this weekend to come up with something for you.
This is just a basic set of tasks to create quick dialers to Mom and Dad, without needing the numbers to have been entered into the contacts app.
One task, "create shortcuts", sets two of Tasker's quick setting tiles. One will call Dad, the other will call Mom. The use of the quick settings tiles should help prevent accidental calls and still be convenient.
After importing the linked project, go to the device's quick settings editor and drag the first two Tasker tiles into the active area. The tasks won't actually appear set to the tiles until they are in the active area.
The task, "create shortcuts" should run on import of this project, performing the configuration mentioned above; associating the tiles with the "call mom" and "call dad" tasks.
The icons are set in the respective "call mom" or "call dad" task. To change the icon, enter the task then tap the icon at the bottom and select a new one. The "create shortcuts" task may need to be run again (manually) to update the tile's icon.
You must go to the "dialer" task and edit the value in the "To" field within the first two actions to the appropriate phone numbers.
The left facing arrow at the top left of the screen exits out of the task and saves the changes. You should also make a habit of tapping the checkmark [emoji736] at the top of the screen after saving a task, which saves the changes to Tasker. That checkmark is available only when there are changes to be saved.
This is just a start, hoping to get feedback if this is the right direction for you.
Import Kids Phone project.
Hey,
thanks a lot for the time you spent for this.
I've tested it and it calls with no issues.
Now we have to make the phone numbers to disappear. Can we put a fixed custom title? This is because it uses the name written in the contact list.
BTW is there an option to drop an icon on the desktop of the phone?
Thanks again for your great help!

Yes, we can create a desktop shortcut. Instead of the tiles?
What do you mean "it uses the name in the contact list"? Do you mean in the call history?
I meant that when I run the call from the tasker it uses the name from the contact book/history. This is not big issue, but it just wondering if it's possible.
Thank you

That is the relationship the phone app has with the contact app. You have to remove the names from the contact app.
I'm confused. I thought the goal here is to obfuscate the phone numbers so if the phone is picked up by a "stranger", the numbers are not evident.
If I was, for example, a stalker, and I took the child's phone to get phone numbers, the first place I would look is in the contacts app. The second place is in the call log. Can you help me understand what is and isn't necessary here.
To create the task to remove the call's history from the history, I have to sort out the contentrovider structure for the phone database. I've explored the text messaging DB, but I need to be on my computer to find the phone DB structure.
