I want to ask anyone with better knowledge of the android os for help.
I need to be able to connect to ADHOC networks. I have a laptop with LAN internet connection and I want to connect my G1 to the laptop's wi-fi. I used to do that with windows mobile.
YES I know there are similar topics, but they are all abandoned and ignored.
I almost feel that it's forbidden to talk about that.
WHY I need that. I live in a country with NO unlimited data plans and very expensive mobile internet. That's it. I want to be able to sync, download and watch youtube while relaxing on the sofa at home without pennies dropping off my pockets for every tiny byte I download.
OK HERE's THE SOLUTION. Thanks to everyone who made the great tutorials available to us :
http://hydtech.wordpress.com/2009/09/14/how-to-connect-to-ad-hoc-networks-using-tmobile-g1-android/
The important part is to tweak the windows part - you need to tell the broadband/adsl internet connection to share itself to the Private wireless network (the network manging your Wireless adapter). If you are having trouble with the windows part (say you connect and have full bars on the phone but no access to web) google ICS (internet connection sharing) in windows and you should get it working.
*Important notice: AdHoc will drain your battery very fast (1hour tops)
Maybe one of the reasons they disabled it... If you cant cope with taht - get a router. I'm cheap and I'm using it like that
Possible solution
I downloaded aNETSHARE - a free aplication for wifi tethering posted on this forum as well. Inside the apk there is a tiwlan_ini file which might be executed when running the app so you can create adhoc connection on the phone. I have replaced the /etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini with this file and tonight I'm gonna try it on the laptop, but I guess it will only enable creation of adhoc networks on the phone.
Am I talking to myself?
I it's not the tiwlan.ini to be edited. There is a wpa_suplicant.conf file where the AP are stored. I will edit it tomorow and see if it works. Helloo unix gurus. Have some mercy on my mortal soul and help a little.

You do want to use a modified tiwlan.ini, but do not replace the system one.
Simply create a new one somewhere and use a command like this
Code:
insmod /system/lib/modules/wlan.ko
wlan_loader -f /system/etc/wifi/Fw1251r1c.bin -e /proc/calibration -i /data/local/tiwlan.ini
netcfg tiwlan0 dhcp
setprop net.dns1 208.67.222.222
The last two lines are to set up the proper IP address and dns server.
the backend of the wifi config gui uses wpa_supplicant. simply edit this and add whatever type of wireless connection you want. this is how we obtained wpa2 enterprise support. it was capable, the gui is just setup, for some reason, to ignore wpa2 enterprise/adhoc/whatever networks.

... Wouldn't it be easier to turn your laptop into an Access Point?
Assuming you are under Windows, you can enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) and then use your G1 to connect to that.
Many people do the same to connect their XBOX360 for example to their laptop or computer to go online.

This is what he's trying to do. The thing is, by default a G1 does not see/connect to Ad-hoc connections, which is what the ICS setup will create.
All the information he needs to get his G1 to see/connect to Ad-hoc networks has been listed in this thread by now. Whether or not he will read any of it is another story.
Aaaahh... My bad. I thought the programs already had such a feature >_< Would be interested in this also incase I don't have any signal for whatever reason.

Thank you! I needed some help on that.
So if I create a internet connection in XP I have to specify a dns there and then enter the same dns in the last line, right?
I actually replaced the system tiwlan.ini (i kept the original) with the one from the aNETSHARE.apk but as expected it created an AP on the G1. I guess I will have to modify the WPA_SUPPLUCANT.CONF too. it should be something like
SSID="test adhoc"
MODE=1 (i think 1 stands for adhoc)
and some other lines i dont remember like the encryption mode and frequency. There are plenty of sample config files. Tonight I will try to do it.
But the question is - what do I modify in tiwlan.ini - is it only the line adhoc=0 to adhoc=1 enough or should I specify ip address and dns there too.
btw I did configure an adhoc network using the wifiHELPER app but all it did was add it to my wifi connections list without being able to see it. The only option was to "forget" the network.
Anyway. I think you helped enough, I will figure read the thread pointed by breaultm. Thanks. I actually couldn't find this very thread cos I searched with "adhoc" as a keyword. Thank you again. I really don't see why they omitted the support for this type of connection. My guess - either a security concern or they just want to make you pay for data plan.
Some reason you don't just use a wireless access point? They're DIRT CHEAP... for example: http://www.infonec.com/site/main.php?module=detail&id=352591 -- thats a wireless router (just disable dhcp server and don't use the wan port) PLUS a wireless nic for $34 CDN.

Well, I know. The cheapest routers are like 35 USD here in Bulgaria. Why not buy one? Call me cheap, but I'd better buy a bigger sd card first (I use a 4gb one now). I used to connect wirelessly with a pocketPC to the laptop and the connection was very stable. If I can't manage to connect the hard way then I will buy a router...

I read somewhere that when hooked up to the PC and activesynch, that WIFI doens't work (which seems to be the case for me) and you can/will access the internet via that method. The trick is you need to have the proxy server that your office uses entered.
I have ooked to my PC at work, and have the Proxy address in, but I still cannot get to the internet.
The one thing that I also seem to remember (can't find that post now) is that somethign about Active synch. I just tried, on the PC, to select "This computer connected to The Internet". It had been auto. didn't help.
Am I trying to do somethign that I can't? If not, any ideas you can share on what I need to set up?
You can allow your phone to use WiFi by checking the box in your ActiveSync settings.
Thanks. That wasn't really what I need to know. I need dto be more clear.
I don't have wifi at work (well I do, but after many attempts and a long thread here, I still cannot connect to it).
What I want to know is can I get to the internet through my hookup to my computer.

You will have to speak to your network administrator.
They could be using MAC addressing or simple password access to a proxy. Either will prevent you using the PC's internet access.
You may also find if they do allow you Internet access, any SMTP or apps that use specific ports/protocols may not work.
It's most likely just security at your work establishment!
EDIT: One way I found around it in MAC systems is to add an access point to your PC which can the copy the PC's MAC to itself and use NAT so that the network just thinks its the PC communicating (you will need another NIC in the PC). The Activesync connection does not use NAT in a correct fashion.
this should help, if you cannot view pages @ pda via AS
Accessing the proxy at work with a PC is as simple as entering the dns name in my browser setup on the PC. I an accessing it fine wiht that. IN fact they have the wireless set up so that anyone coming in visiting who is told the proxy dns name can access a 'public' wireless method. But for some reasong my Tilt will not work on either the public one or the private one which is using Peap.
I also find that at home where I know all my network setup I cannot access the Internet via hookup to the computer.
Based on all of that it must be somethign about my Tilt, or more likely, the setup.
BTW...I can access wifi at home and many other places. Just not through the USB and PC or wireless at my work place.
Pulka...I'll check out your item.
Thanks
[edit]
I just re-read Farsquidges post, and that may be something to check out at work. And I know tha tat home, my router is set up to allow specific MACS. I don't think they do that at work. but I'll see if I can get through it at home. My router will display the MACs trying to get through, and I can allow it. At least that will answer if my Tilt is even trying to get through maybe.
[edit 2]
I think I must not know how to set this up to access via the PC. I just attempted at home, and my device seemed set up for Work Network. I'll have to figure this out.
Hello This guide is made up from the knowledge i have build up from advice given on XDA and information on other sites.
I have found this very useful in my home and hope you do to.
First off, this guide explains everything you need to do to use your diamond as the access point to the internet at home for all devices. (PC's, PS3, XBOX360, Wii)
It is highly recommended that you have a unlimited data allowance!!!!! Otherwise you could have a hefty bill at the end of the month.
Right what you will need :
A Diamond with an unlimited data allowance tariff,
A WiFi router (i have used an old router that was installed with Tiscali BB)
WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (please find this your self i will not provide it)
and some basic knowledge of networking on PC's and your devices.
Thats it. Please don't be put off by the networking side of things its really easy to do.
Right first off we need to get your diamond taking to your router.
switch on your router and let it do its thing for 2-4 mins
Connect your diamond to the wifi router by switching on your wifi in settings, communications on touchflow, when prompted, connect to your router and enter your network key.
THIS IS THE SAME PROCESS AS CONNECTING TO A WIFI HOTSPOT.
Its that simple.
Next switch off your wifi in settings, communications.
Install WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (Simple and stable)
once installed open WMWifiRouter and press connect.
This should then setup your phone to be used as a access point and connect to your wireless network all at once.
Once it says connected you can turn off your phones main screen by pressing the off switch at the top and put your phone where there is best signal! HSDPA is needed to get up 7.2mbps (little H in signal area)
Right now you need to setup your laptop or device to talk to the phone via your router!
So here are the settings you need to setup in either TCP/IP (manual connection) or a manual connection on your device (PS3, Wii, XBOX360).
I will use a laptops connection as a example because all you need to do is to copy the settings to another device using a different IP address.
If you use wifi or a hardwired connection, right click the telly with the wifi connection in the bottom right of the screen and click open network connections (XP only dont know for vista), Or if the telly is not displayed in the bottom righthand cornner of the task bar then click start, control panel, network connections.
Click on the connection you wish to use i.e local area connection or wireless network connection (you can setup both connections by repeating these steps on each connection)
this should bring up a general tab of this connection, click properties.
This will bring up another box with the network properties, all you need to do is manually enter your IP settings and DNS settings so double click on "internet protocol [TCP/IP]"
Another box appears.
Click "use the following IP address"
In IP address type "192.168.0.xxx" xxx being the unique 3 digit code of your choice, write this down for your firewall settings on other devices if you run a networked drive etc. Each new device will need its own unique 3 digit code ie PC = 192.168.0.100, XBOX360 = 192.168.0.200, Wii = 192.168.0.123 etc.
In Subnet mask type "255.255.255.0"
In Default gate way type "192.168.0.1
Now click "Use the following DNS server address"
In preferred DNS server type "192.168.0.1"
Thats it, press ok and ok on any other boxes still left open.
Your network device will rest your IP and DNS settings to the ones you have just entered, thus allowing you computer to access the mobiles phones internet connection via your router
On all your devices Manually setup all your connections using these settings and they will all use your mobile phone to connect to the internet.
Using DHCP to configure your network is not advised as its unreliable at finding your phones connection.
Now if you want to start using your phone as a phone again, open up WMWifiRouter again if its not already and click options Quit.
To get internet access on other devices via your phone again all you need to do is to start WMWifiRouter and press connect. Start using the internet!!!
If you wish to use your laptop on another hotspot, you will need to reset the TCP/IP settings back to automatic, otherwise it will not work.
Using this process sometimes causes the phone to disable its own internet connection, so a soft reset after exiting WMWifiRouter is recommended.
Have fun, im sorry if its all a little messy but i have never been very good at writing these guides.
If any modd wants to add or edit this post then please feel free. any persons wanting to add to this guide please do so.
Yes i know you can connect your phone to your laptop by USB, Bluetooth, but this method allows multiple devices to use the same phone to access the internet at the same time and via a access point at the highest possible speed, so games consoles can use it!!! Brilliant if you get a good HSDPA signal and live in the country.
Oh one last thing! if you are a youngster and wish to try this, please do so on other equipment, don't use your family's main router and laptop or PC unless its no longer in use!!!
Thank You
i haven't tried it myself but thanks for posting the guide.
Cheers
Thanks for reading
Its does work, In my home i no longer have a land line or cable broadband i just have one bill a month which is my phone bill of £41 including insurance on my device and i get every thing, i have saved my self a fortune per year doing this, that was my reason anyway hehe L8rs

Because the data going through the phone will really heat up the phone, as a side benefit you'll be able to use it as both a heater, and a stove until your appliances are hooked up.
Just how many torrents does it take to boil 1 cup of water?
I tried out wmwifirouter with my laptop and I must say it's quite slow compared to connecting the phone with USB and using internet sharing, any clue why? Nice guide btw, will be used when needed
:>
your are correct, if you use WMWfiRouter directly with with your computer it does seem slow and you also get a lot of drop outs as well for that reason i stopped using months ago and was using bluetooth edr. But using this method respose times are much much quicker (to be honest i dont know why) and it is just as fast as using with USB, i know i have tested it. Im on orange UK, i get constant 1.6mbps down and 360kbps up with two bars connected the HSDPA network.
Im using it right now to reply to this thread, i got rid of my land lane and broadband connection because this is that stable and fast!
As for heating issues (poster above) once its connected and you turn off the screen, i have never had a issue. i even keep it in its HTC pouch in case it falls of the shelf its on lol.
The only problem i have come across which is more of a annoyance than anything is that when someone phones you it can slow your connection not always though, a soft reset fixes the issue.
Any more questions feel free.

Ive looked quite a bit and even posted in a non relevant thread pertaining to ICS and its DHCP Assigning. Is there a way to change the IP Block it is currently set to use ( 192.168.0.xx ) ?
The issue I am having is that with my setup, I am running my raphael via USB as a sharable connection back out via lan ( cat5 ). The dilemma is that XP also uses this dhcp allocator and it causes a conflict that prevents the computer from allowing incoming connections via lan.
I have tried to find ways around XP's dhcp assignment and as far as I can tell, there is no way to change it. Im hoping on the WM side, it is just something as simple as a registry thread im overlooking.
Id like to assign it as maybe 192.168.2.1 if possible.
Before people say "just use wmwifirouter", this is NOT an option as im looking for a slightly more long term connection ( Until my DSL is installed next week ). The raphael ( as well as my kaiser ) Both overheat to the point where they refuse to charge with bluetooth sharing and Wifi sharing, whereas with USB , there is no issue. Theoretically what im attempting is possible as Network connection sharing allows me the "Advanced " Tab and inside it lets me chose the " Share this connection" feature. The problem occurs when I select the "Share via Lan Connection 1" box. It freezes and tells me that the IP Block is already in use. I am not a novice when it comes to networking, so I know my setup will work ( As I have tested it briefly using a neighbors insecure wireless signal selecting the Wifi card as the shared connection)
Thank you for any insight and input
PS
If this belongs in the General forum, moderators please feel free to move it, however this issue is with a specific piece of software on my Raphael ( ICS )
Hmmm 2 days and no responses. I'll assume it cant be done then I hope im wrong and it is possible.

Nope.... im trying to changer the IP block that ICS is using as its default. WmWifiRouter is able and it uses ICS as its base for how it works. Im trying to change the default ICS DHCP address given to a client computer when its plugged in via USB or Bluetooth.
Thanks
Ok well i use my laptop to connect my xbox to the internet through ics but when you go into you connections (win xp) you right click on the phone (in the network connections) and its one of those 3 tabs that has a checkbox in it that says alow other devices to connect through this connection and click apply. You should be able to do it that way (i havnt personaly dont it with my phone but i do it with wireless for my xbox) and i think you have to pay for ics with att not sure. any peace out
p.s. im at school now so pm me if you need a vid on how to do this...
I was actually wondering the same thing, and some searching turned up this:
http://blogger.socsurveys.org/2008/12/windows-ics-19216801-conflict.html
But I'm not sure if it's a good solution or not, since I haven't had the chance to try it yet. Hope it helps

I believe than in windows XP may be also vista, ICS can only done if the computer providing the share uses 192.168.0.1. It is probably the same concept. Bad news is that there is no way around it if you use ICS

I'm trying to use my G1 to allow my laptop access my employer's VPN (PPTP) and can't make it work. There's a defect logged with android-wifi-tether so apparently I'm not the only one having this problem. I've tried the USB tether built into cyanogenmod and can't get in that way either.
Anyone have any ideas or personal success? Anyone want to confirm that I just can't do what I'm trying to?
thanks,
--e
I believe that the correct approach is to have the phone itself NOT part of the VPN, tether the computer to the internet via the phone, and initiate the VPN from the computer itself.
Is that what you are trying? Or are you trying to VPN the phone and just tether?
i was able to get on vpn network though wired tether ..i have super d1.8..not sure why you cant.
Thanks much for the replies, I really appreciate it.
I haven't tried logging into the VPN with the phone itself because I didn't figure that would get my laptop on the VPN (though I could try that).
I am connecting to the internet using the phone either as a modem (USB tether) or an ad-hoc network (android-wifi-tether) and the internet works beautifully except that I'm not able to log into the VPN.
I'm getting an error 721 and my android-ignorant IT geek is grumbling about GRE and NAT and blocked ports and goodness knows what else.
rshemeld - what method are you using to tether? do you know if your VPN is using PPTP?
Thanks!
--eric
Hey there!
I'm not a VPN pro, but PPTP error 721 generally means that GRE is being blocked somewhere along the line. This could be the router (in this case your phone) or an upstream router (your wireless providers router). One way to test is to connect to the VPN with the phones built-in PPTP client like someone suggested, that would at least narrow down the problem.
If the problem turns out to be that your phone is blocking the GRE packets then you'd need to port forward port 1723 on the phone to your local machine and also protocol forward (note that this is a protocol forward, not a port forward) protocol 47, which is GRE.
EDIT:
iptables -t nat -i your_radio -p tcp --dport 1723 -j DNAT --to your_computer
iptables -t nat -i your_radio -p 47 -j DNAT --to your_computer

EDIT2:
Ignore the above code, its for setting up a server behind your NAT not letting a PPTP client through the NAT. Not sure what I was thinking.

Wow, I'm your new biggest fan. I'll get the VPN info from my geeks and verify that the phone itself can get on (I suspect it'll be able to).
The code you posted, do I enter that in the terminal application on the phone? Or should I boot to Aman-Ra and use that terminal?
Thanks for your patience and your help, everyone.

Yeah i set a profile up first(on my PC) i am not using the vpn client/rsa token.
Hey!
Yep put that in your phone terminal. I'll see if I can get a more concrete example for you.
EDIT:
Oops, my iptables lines were totally wrong, ignore those. I just did some testing and realized what I posted was not set up for what you needed. Let me try a couple things here with my PPTP and I'll let you know how it goes.
EDIT2:
I've tried a couple ways and I'm not able to connect to both of my PPTP servers directly from my phone (I'm guessing this is Rogers' doing, or a big blunder on my part), so I can't help with too much more troubleshooting, but try getting on your PPTP server with just your phone and if that works. If it does then you can most likely get on it with your laptop behind your phone. You might not even need any iptables rules, but like I said I can't really test it for you. Good luck.

Hi,
I am having a problem using WM6.5 (EnergyRom Titanium) together with the Wifi Router in the Rom or WMWifiRouter for providing internet access to my MID816 Android Froyo Tablet.
First of all and for completeness, I had to make a little change to the WPA_supplicant.conf file in the tablet:
Code:
Ctrl_interface=DIR=/data/system/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wifi
eapol_version=2
update_config=1
[B]ap_scan=2[/B]
network={
ssid="droidhoc"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=NONE
group=WEP104
auth_alg=OPEN SHARED
[B]priority=99[/B]
mode=1
}
The bold lines are the ones I needed to change.
After that I tried using the wifi Router and WMWifirouter with wep enabled (and the extra line in wpa_supplicant.conf), but that didn't seem to work, for some reason my tablet wouldn't connect.
Next I tried without wep and well it did connect (both WMWifiRouter and the tablet confirmed this)... but I couldn't access the internet for some reason.
I tried the same using the TP and my laptop and my laptop didn't have any problem connecting to the internet using wmwifirouter on the TP.
Next I tried installing XDANDROID on the TP and after some initial problems I got Gingerbread running on it.
I installed Barnacle Wifi Tether on the TP (the build in only gave errors), got it running without wep and connected to it with my tablet on the first try.
It even gave internet access to my tablet.
SUCCESS... well not completely.
XDANDROID, although a wonderfull development, seriously drains the battery of my TP (RAPH100)... so it is not the best alternative when traveling. It gives a temporary solution, but still.
So, after all this, I'm thinking, if xdandroid can connect and pass through the internet to my tablet, WM6.5 should be able to also.
Just, I have no idea what the big difference is here.
So, if anyone could help me figure out how to get wmwifirouter working with my tablet, that would be incredibly helpfull. Maybe someone does know what the big difference is between using wmwifirouter and barnacle wifi tether ...
TIA
Probably best to ask that question (since it is related to a specific project) HERE
I see, but the thing is, that I don't have a problem when using xdandroid...
The only thing that is giving met trouble is wmwifirouter :s
The reason it won't connect is the same reason why my wife's tablet or my PSP won't either. They connect in infrastructure mode only. The wifi router creates an adhoc connection. I hope this helps. I really, really wanted my PSP to be able to use the wifi router.
It's solved!
I stumbled across this post today: http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/385...-to-look-here/page__view__findpost__p__125320
the adhoc switching app doesn't work, but the line I have to use in the terminal does
This is the line I have to use in the terminal to be able to connect to the internet:
Code:
setprop net.dns1 192.168.3.1
Now, If only I could get that modeswitching program to work or even better use simple scripts to copy the correct wpa_supplicant.conf file and immediatly execute the above line...
And this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=486486) did the trick
I made 2 scripts:
adhoc
Code:
cat /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc > /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
setprop net.dns1 192.168.3.1
This one I have to use before turning on wifi and after the connection is made (could also have made 2 scripts but this works just as well
And returning to the normal connection mode
normal
Code:
cat /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf.normal > /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
