Depends on your opinion I guess .. I use retro date (part of retro clock widget) which to me is better, says the date and uses two spots. When I click on it it goes to calendar. Some may not like it because it doesnt display the days events or to-dos, or w/e is on the calendar but to me its short and simple..

You have a couple of choices with hero.
If you have not tried the calender widget that is included in the free app "Quick Calendar" you might take a look. I preferred it to the stock one.
I'll go for quick calendar. it displays two upcoming events.
Has Quick Calendar's widget UI improved? Last time I used it, it was just a brick, not much better looking than the default widget.
I'm surprised it's taken this long to create a calendar widget that displays agenda in a non ****ty way.

That solves nothing for those of us that would rather not run Hero.
However you may have a better time getting a dev to port the hero widget to cupcake then getting one to write one from scratch. The Hero widgets are very nice IMO.
I would love to see the Hero widget ported over. I cant believe no one has made a better calendar widget. I need something that will show three or more events at a time. Quick Calendar looks better then it used to but I always get force closes from it. I also hate how the widget's size depends on how long the event name is.
The anitime widget it nice just doesnt show events but it shows the entire month, and the clock is nice to and comes with it

Full calendar doesn't do much for me, especially a clock when you already have a clock in the top bar. More events is what I am looking for. The default widget only shows 1 event.
I use Agenda View in the Calendar. Can anyone tell me how to swiftly jump to the next month's Agenda. Now I have to switch to the month view mode, then click a day on the month, and then come back to the Agenda View. It is very inconvenient.
I use the tCalendar Widget.
Puts the date and day of the week as the Calendar icon. Perfect for what I need.
Have to agree with those that say the stock widget stinks - I'm also in need of one that would show a few more events.
What bugs me is there was a widget like that when Cupcake was first released, and I can't find it anywhere now.

Again, not a good solution for those of us who would rather not use home replacements. All the people are looking for in here is a widget. I've used sweeter home and its very amazing, but the lag that comes with home replacements I'd just rather not have.

agreed. lag = bad
AniWidget has both a plain "Calendar" and a "Google Agenda" components, but the latter one is just a clone of the stock widget, with fancier transparency. Hardly worth the $3.

So, with widgets now in full swing, I thought I would find out from you folks, which widgets could you not live without????
Personally, I love the FML widget. I look at it several times a day. I love how its customizable to fit any theme! Im sure I would be VERY UPSET to lose this one!
I also love the Android and Me widget and the 10,000 things to know widget.
So what about you guys?
def the bbc news widget for me. (being british)
really hope to see a decent sms widget, facebook widget, and contacts widget - bit like the ones on the hero.
from hero i cant live without the messaging preview widget
that thing is the best
dont have to keep going into the app now to preview a message to know if i feel like responding or not...
it lags the phone a little but oh well...
Flipclock with weather from hero
I've never got the hype with widgets - they seem to kill my battery and tbh I can just click one icon on my homescreen for whichever app I like.
Really the only widgets I use are the retro clock/date, wifi on/off and brightness. That is in addition to the music and google in another window.

I'm with you on this one. Though it is good to see next appointment in your calendar on the home screen. So calendar is the only widget that I use.
I've searched and searched and haven't come up with a definite answer.
Can the HTC Widgets be used on Cyanogen, or any non-Hero ROM?
No.
Definite enough?
No, short answer, the hero widgets were built for rosie/sense whatever you want to call it, basically it's another home replacement app. Widgets are not compatible with standard launcher.
Like above the answer is no. Although there are a few widgets on the market that look like the htc wigdets.
Beautiful Widgets-Digital Clock Widget
Contact Bar- People bar
Pure Grid Calender- Calender Widget
Pure Messenger Widget- Email/Message Widget
Damn, all I really wanted was the peep twitter widget, but I'll live I guess haha
Use Twidgit Lite!
I've always wondered since a Home Replacement is basically a stand alone app, and widgets on the standard sdk can't be animated like the hero's in most cases.
Couldn't we just make a HR that runs applications as widgets type of thing.
Like if anyones run a pulse rom and used taskiller you'll see it's cards widgets or whatever it's called running and working with sense UI styles.
I don't see why we can't just run touchflo on cyanogen... most Hero ROMs are based on 1.5 right now, so... hmmm

Thanks! Found it! However, with the limitations it imposes (not able to scroll and have more than 4 contacts) I think I will pass on this one, for now. Dev states they are working on a solution for that, once found, it would be worth the purchase for me.
I have purchased many apps, especially the Pure apps (Calendar widget, Grid calendar widget and Messenger widget) that help make the phone look/perform nicely.
Keep up the great work Dev's!

Hey, I am on a stock N1, I am looking for a pretty identical widget for weather/clock, you know what you see on say, the Desire. What app and what skin can you recommend? I do not mind paying.
BEAUTIFUL WIDGETS
Fancy widget is also nice and it's free.

I've tried:
Beautiful Widgets
Weather Widget & Toggle
Fancy Widget
Top => Bottom = least realistic to most realistic.
However, top=>bottom = most features to least features.
Fancy Widget comes the closest. I somehow feel it's slightly slower than the other two though. Not sure.
using fancy widgets for a while now and i have 0 problems.
I like it the most cause i want just a clock + weather that looks exactly like the HTC one, and i do not want xxxx features that i don't use anyway.
just a clock + weather + you can choose what happens when you hit the clock. thats it.
Fancy Widget for the win!

Beautiful Widgets does that, along with opening the calendar when tapping the date and your weather app of choice when tapping the forecast. Also has an HTC skin thats pretty much spot-on, with dozens more to choose from. Same with Weather & Flip clock. I don't see fancy widget being available for long, HTC will shut them down for copying their look.
Is it just me or has fancy widgets disappeared from the market?

That's the result of a Cease & Desist request from good ole HTC. You won't see it in the Market anymore. They will continue on under a different name and style. Paul has the latest in his r20 build.

I have the final version of Fancy Widget, but not sure if it's okay to post. PM me if anyone wants it.
After the putchase, it was installed, and when I go to select widgets, not all of the widgets are there. No clock, no weather, not sure how many I am supposed to have.
I decided maybe I need to uninstall/reinstall. Went to market, there was no 'reinstall' option. So I went into Settings/Applications/Manage Apps. and uninstalled. Got message I had a refund.
I presume I got the correct app, as it showed the right company in the Google Checkout.
What should be the right process to get this installed, especially if something is wrong.
One thing I find quite interesting with apps for Android: looks like no way to contact many of the sellers. For this for example I went to their web site, didn't see any support or method to contact them.
This app had downloadble widgets which means not all of them come installed with it.
Further research shows that many users have trouble with this app ranging from issues like yours to battery problems.
The website for the app says that you can contact them through email from the android market. if this is not the case, I would abandon this app on that basis alone lol.
poppycock app works fine on my n1 and my galaxy s.. once installed all widgets are there you only have to download skins for weather and clock.
try downloading with wifi on.. it is much faster.

Thanks for the input, but they are not there 'once installed', if then you have to 'download skins for weather and clock'. Seems to me a clock should be a widget, not a skin. On the site, which has all of 1 page talking of features, they mention things about skins, and downloading skin kits. That implies development to me.
I went to the Market online, but that, interestingly enough, you can't even search on. On thes web site, interestingly enough, NO method to contact them there. But thanks to your tip, I do see an email address on the Market from the phone.
This is quite an interesting learning experience.
The web site that is on the Market is not reachable. Maybe trouble tonight.
I'll try the email route and see if I can learn a bit more about what I need to get this stuff working.
there are 100s of custom clock skins they cannot possibly put them all with the app it would be huge.. you add the beautifull home widget under under skins download and select the clock you want..
The widget name you want is called Beautiful Home, and when you pick that one it opens up a settings box. Down at the bottom it "save and apply." You gotta hit that button to actually put the widget on the screen. If you hit skins instead you can choose what you want, but you have to apply each time as you back out of the settings interface to make the widget "stick". Small learning curve. Once the widget is up, you can hit the weather to see the big weather popup, and hitting the menu button there brings up settings and skin buttons.
This is my favorite widget, the most reliable. I have submitted skins that were accepted, so I know they are responsive. If you still need help let me know.
Thank you so much for the details. You'd think an app that is at a cost, however small, would have at least a base level of documentation on their web page.
Question: Is Beautiful Home a different set than Beautiful Widgets, or is it just required in order to use Beautiful Widgets?

Beautiful Home is the name of the clock/weather widget that comes with Beautiful Widgets.
Thanks. I got it going.
I was thinking that a 'Home' Widget was a replacement for the home screen or something like that. Its beginning to look like a home widget must be a widget that can be placed on any screen, and is 'home' to other things you will be adding, as opposed to replacing some other home widget. Is that the case in general?
How's that for a tongue twister?
I would like to know if you all recommend this app for the Captivate?
Beautiful Widgets + Launcher Pro = Fantastic UI experience
I've been using weather and toggle widget and like it more than beautiful widget but both are nice.

I have Beautiful Widgets along wiht Beautiful Weather LIve Wallpaper, and really like it. But I'm always interested in seeing what's out there.
Just noticed something I miss from my old phone. I only just noticed it because I haven't had any appointments until now. Is there a way to show your nest appointment prominently, such as on a homescreen or on the lock screen? I notice the lock screen shows calls/voicemail/sms, but not appointments.

also want.
Still nothing as far as a lock screen, but after some googleing, I found that there are a few apps on the market that let you display this info on the homescreen as a widget. just search for the word "agenda" and a bunch will pop up. Right now I am using Agenda Widget because I can customize it to blend in with my clock. The other ones were functional, but kinda ugly.

Can show up to 3 appointments as far out as you want. Looks clean and simple also.

Try Executive Assistant. It is a little flaky yet (I am using the free version), it does the trick for the meetings and even has a little slide unlock deal instead of the standard android lock screen.
widget locker + pure calendar or launcherpro plus calendar
Another vote for Pure Calendar, the Pure widgets are skinnable so they can have the look you want, and Messenger, Calendar, and Weather Forecast they provide most of what I want on my homescreen.
