I can access my sd card through a reader but I can't access my phone through usb (but it still charges). I have 2 partitions, one is fat32 (with some music, pictures and stuff) and another is ext3 (i reformatted it last night thinking it might be that but it wasn't)
Basically, I've tried it on xp, vista, win7 but win7 and vista it says it has malfunctioned and then when I go device manager its called unknown device
I have used swapper and most likely did try to mount my phone which I've heard screws up your card. So before I do it do I need to reformat my fat32 partition and if I do have to should I reformat it to fat32 or fat?
Or is there another solution?
Thank you
Have you tried formatting it from within the G1. settings->sd card -> format? You'll want Fat32 if formatting elsewhere, also if you want multiple partitions I'd try formatting the whole card first, then partitioning/formatting again.
Make sure you have a drive letter assigned to the FAT32 partition. (Eg. F:/)
hmmm
On xp it just says unknown device, I've reformated from my pc (the fat32 partition) maybe it would be an idea to do it from the phone. I just don't know what to do tbh I mean its weird. Do you think its to do with app2sd?
hmm
And I can't sign a driver letter because it doesn't come up with mount on my phone all it does it charge

Are you using the data cable that came with the phone? I lost mine a while back and tried using just a regular USB to Type A (the port on the phone) on the phone and got the same results. It'll use the power from the USB drive but won't mount or even connect.
Also, you might want to try to install the Android USB Driver for Windows. It's floating around here somewhere, just do a search for it.
If you have adb installed there's a command called ?adb kill server? or something like that. Sry on phone right now but a google search should help. Sometimes this process has been knows to fix similar problems where the pc doesn't recognize the phone. Not sure why it woult effect mass storage tho. But wth worth a try I suppose.
Well I'm using the data cable that came with the phone, adb remount just gives error:device not found and I have usb drivers because I have used this phone on this laptop before so you know
This is annoying
I've tried reflashing my spl but still no dice, I just dont get it :S
Like everyone else has stated, Format your entire card to fat32 and setup your partitions again. That should do it. the SPL doesn't really affect it. GL
Ill have a go
Right I'm going to have a go now
Ill tell you my results
Good luck Kushion!
I had the same problem only my sd card would actually show and mount for a second then unmount. I finally gave up and went and bought an sd card .
this is what I do now.
vm ware player http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
I believe with this running and a guest os I can mount the sd card.
I know for sure that I can do it with ubuntu but im not completely sure with windows 7.
This is also good for "sandboxing" programs or testing files to see if they have a virus. by running the guest os in the virtual software you are not infecting your main os . I use it when i wanna test things but dont wanna run the risk of borking my main os.
god daaaaaaaaammit
right I have deleted the ext3 partiton and then reformated it all to fat32, I then wiped, I then reinstalled cyragon firmware and booted and guess what...
doing the same thing :|
It lets in power but doesn't let me mount, doesnt even give me the option
I am having the same exact problem. My work computer, have always used it, same cable, same everything, then all of the sudden today I came to work, had some downtime was going to mess with my phone and it won't recognize my phone. Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers at least ten times but to no avail. Any help greatly appreciated.

I know this is a bit old, but the topic got bumped and I saw this one... I do most of my "work" on my phone here at the office, and just use a standard MiniUSB cord with no problem. Not that you're the first one I've heard say that, but I don't think your phone (or PC?) is working right if that is the problem.. The ExtUSB cable that comes with the phone has standard data pins, just extra headset pins - that's the only difference.

Reboot the PC? Maybe an obvious question, but just in case. And.. It sounds like you have a reasonable level of admin access to the PC, but just in case - are you sure your employer hasn't blocked mass storage devices? I'm in IT myself, so I can use it on my PC.. But if I tried to plug my G1 into any of our other PCs here, it would happily charge away but never mount the drive, due to our security policies.
Wow old thread but similar problem...
My wife's G1 won't mount to pc as a mass storage device, however mine does without a problem. I have the drivers, sdk. I can see the phone through adb, it just won't mount. Also, I've tried it on both our pc's which are win7 x64. Check sig for phone details.

Hi, my Touch HD is still under warranty but I'm running Hard SPL 1.56.Olinex.
My USB is not working, it just charges my phone. My SD Card reader is also not working... So I can only connect via BT and I can't find any way of restoring SPL without USB/SD... Is it impossible?

Do u try a HARD RESET? If you try a Hard Reset and still have the same Problem you can do some of the things.. tell me witch ROM u use.. maybe the USB problem that don`t wana sync is from the ROM.. also sometimes when you flash a 6.5 ROM the CARD is not visable one FOrmat normaly will clear the things but its bad when you cannot conetc to format via PC
The Best you can do is to flash Another ROM via SD Card but 1st you need to make your SD card working so if you have some SD adapter or some other device that you can take out your SD card from the Phone and conect it directly to the PC will be perfect to FORMAT it.. Once the problem with your CArd is fixed you can just put there some new ROM and Flash the Device...
Its very Bad when on the same time the USB and Card not working but don`t worry you can fix the things but its not so easy.

Yes but the NEW Cooocked ROm is around 170MB so you will need few days to copy this via BT also when your SD card not working this is not posible because the ROM file must to be located in the root of the SD card
Now i understand that you use STOCK ROM so the best you can do is to go in HTC service for Warranty i was thinking you have a problem with Coocked ROM but when is with STOCK ROM its not your fault.
The problem is that I've installed Hard Spl... If I take it to HTC they probably are gonna say it's not covered by warranty...
If you use usb to charge your phone than datacommunication with your pc has to work.
Which OS are you running, because when you entering the bootloader your pc doesn't see your phone as a mobile device anymore.
If you're running WMDC and entering the bootloader than Vista or W7 is searching for new drivers..... If not found read this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524619
For XP you have to install the drivers yourself.
They can also be found in the link.
When the drivers are installed en your phone is synced than it will show USB in bootloader.
After that flash back to stock SPL
Hopefully this is will help you, your problem is very strange
Because of a not workin SD card and a not working USB
I wish you luck!
Thx! I'll give it a try tonight... but I don't think that will help because I've hard-reset the device and tried with Windows 7 and Windows XP and nor the phone nor the pc show any message.
I remember that the SD card did show up, but after a few seconds it would disappear... But now it never shows up... Already changed usb options on control panel...
The last thing I did when the SD was ok was trying Android with no luck.
I believe it's really an hardware problem and maybe I could replace the board that has SD/USB/SIM but would like to use my warranty....
If you update usb drivers there's a good chance that your device will show up on pc. Don't forget to 'enable usb connections' in activesync connections settings
Also if this doesn't work try flashing orginal stock rom which came with your device. This rom, and only this rom, will still flash as long as you are connected to pc (doesn't need to say 'usb' at bottom of bootloader). Alternatively try MTTY

I had a very similar problem when I last tried andriod. first of all my sd card dropped off, It would go in, be seen and then drop again as soon as I tried to access it. Android had corrupted it. Try reformatting your SD card fat32, copy the rom on and try updating the ROM again using your SD card.
It also busted my pc drivers on my pc, I had to uninstall them completely and then load the latest drivers. If you have another pc try it on this first before faffing with your USB drivers.
Once my sd card was back I couldnt flash any roms, no usb connection. I did a hard reset and then went into spl manually and set it running that didnt seem to work but when my phone rebooted usb was backup.
It seems andriod manager to corrupt my ROM, SD card and uSB drivers on my PC, I havent bothered with Android since and wont until there is a bootable ROM available (never)?
Your USB cable may be bad. Sometimes they stop working and pc communications stops. I've had to replace my usb cables from time to time.

Last time I had something like this, I had to remove the HD from windows mediaplayer. For some reason it was there as plain "storage card" if I remember correctly. After that I could connect normally with the HD again.
*Have you verified that your SD Card is actually working at all?
*-I've had a problem in the past with an "old" SD Card that wouldn't recognise properly in either my PC or my phone. Turns out all i had to do was clean the contacts on it lightly. My original 8Gb SD Card that came with my Blackstone has also completely died. It will not format, will recognise then drop-off and attempting to use it in ANY manner resulted in it becoming excessively hot - Dead card, not replaceable under warranty
*If the SD Card works in your PC, have you tried formatting it to "Device Defaults" via the PC?
*-This problem has in the past also prohibited me from using my SD Card in my Blackstone. For some devices, without certain registry tweaks enabled, only particular formats of SD Cards are recognised. I have also noticed that the card must be formatted in a particular way to be useable as a ROM Flashing card. The Blackstone simply won't read any images from the card in bootloader mode if the card is formatted improperly.
* Try another USB Cable, being able to charge via USB does NOT mean it WILL sync, for example, if your USB cable has bent/damaged contacts, or if the cable itself has a broken lead, the VCC (voltage core) and GND (ground) leads can still create a circuit to send power to the device which will enable it to charge.
*-Also try other USB ports... you never know when one maybe too dusty / dirty / faulty
* Windows 7 / Vista? Uninstall Window Mobile Device Centre (WMDC) re-download and reinstall, or allow Windows Update to do this for you after you've uninstalled. A simple registry error can fark this right up. I should know, as I recently accidentally imported my Blackstone's registry backup to my laptop... ugh that was a nightmare. Windows 7 recovered, but I spent a few days browsing with the wrong user-agent, meaning a lot of websites were redirecting to their "mobile" or "wap" counterparts...ewwww
* Windows XP? Well I can't say too much there, as I haven't used it pretty much since Vista was released years ago. Just do your best to make sure all drivers are updated appropriately.
other sd card
have you tired a different sd card there are known issues with some types of cards sd vs' sdhc and class 2 vs' class 6 cards. Also you may have a bad usb cable? Do you have .net framework installed. are you trying all this on the same computer you used to flash your phone with hspl. You can try putting your phone into bootloader mode wait for usb to appear on the bottom of the tri-color screen and then reflash stock spl from there by opening the BlackstoneRUUWrapper and going through the steps it should see your phone. See the wiki!
And why did you hspl if you have a stock rom?
I did a sim-unlock and didn't restore the spl after the process... I was waiting for the perfect 6.5 ROM...
I didn't have time to test it yesterday but I brought it with me and will try again later...
I already tested the SD in other Windows Mobile phones and was ok... The SD is not the original (Transcend) but a SanDisk 8GB but already tried it with a 2GB SD and nothing. Also tried with different cables. And in different PCs (windows xp and Windows 7). Also did a hard-reset.
Nothing worked! When I enter bootloader with usb cable connected there is no SERIAL and no USB message, but if I remove the cable it changes to SERIAL and doesn't change anymore. On the PC, with XP, W7 and Ubuntu, nothing happens... lsusb gives nothing... on device manager it doesn't show up.
Regarding the SD card, when I insert it the screen turns on, but still no storage card detected... I really think it's an hardware problem.... I ordered this, just in case, http://cnn.cn/shop/touch-simmicrousb-card-module-p-7149.html, but will still try to take it to warranty before because there is a seal over one of the screws...
Thank you all!
Hi all
I rooted my phone today. I then installed clockworkmod and saved a stock backup. Following that, I successfully enabled 3 button recovery.
My problem appeared either after rooting or after clockworkmod. The problem was there prior to enabling 3 button recovery. I suspect it was clockworkmod that caused the problem.
Anyway, when I connect the phone to the computer the 16gb internal sd card & 2gb phone storage appear as removable drives in 'my computer'. However, double clicking on the drives gives the message 'no disk in the drive, please insert one'. Windows can't read the usable file space, browse or even format the drives.
However, I can browse the internal sd card fine using any android file manager.
Also, I can use adb to push/pull files.
What is going on?
I need to know quite quickly what to do. I initiated a phone repair with my carrier due to the mtp crash bug, so they are expecting it to be returned pronto. If the phone is stuffed, I'll send it back. If this can be fixed, I'll keep it since I managed to get the three button recovery working.
Also, I think there's a boot rom or something to do with clockworkmod still installed? How do I get rid of that if I'm sending the phone back. I know how to unroot.
Edit: I just found an external sd card to test. I formatted it in windows by using a sd card reader, then when I plugged it into the phone and tried it as a mass storage device windows didnt like it. Putting it back into the card reader one last time and windows recognised it. Makes no sense....
Edit2: In kies mode, kies can access it. And also it adds a 'galaxy s' to my computer where the internal sd card actually works... now I'm even more confused!
Have you tryed formatting your internal Sd or useing recovery 2e and factory resetting your phone?
I've tried formatting it and reset via settings->privacy->factory reset data.
Is 3 button recovery any different to the above type of reset? What will it roll the system back to?
(The recovery image I made in rom manager will have the same problem. I dont currently have an update.zip on my sd card due to formatting it, but I can get one on there using adb if I need to.)

Is your usb debugging on by chance? If so, turn it off ans reconnect the phone to the pc.
Mine does this when usb debugging is on and im on a stock eclair rom... Hope it helps...
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
That thought occurred to me too. Definately off. Ive checked it many many times now
When I first used adb, I simply pulled the plug out. I couldn't see any 'quit debug' command. There are start/kill server commands, they dont seem appropriate. Doesnt look like I should have had to do anything other than just pull the cable out.
Update:
I think that the update.zip's applied to my phone have changed some software to an earlier version that what my unit was shipped with.
When I first got the phone, I just plugged it into the pc and selected 'mass storage' on the phone. The drives then appeared (and worked) in windows.
Now, I have to click mass storage. That on its own isnt enough. But if I pull-down the tray menu at the top of the screen, there is another option to click (something along the lines of 'select this to transfer files between your phone and pc'). If I click that, it works.
There are some slight differences still:
1) I could swear that my phone originally allowed access to the 2gb phone internal memory (I never tried reading/writing to it, but I'm convinced windows displayed a 2gb drive).
2) I used to get the "xx/13.4gb free" under the drive letter in 'my computer', which I now only get in the status bar at the bottom of windows file explorer.
QUESTION
Does everybody else have to click "mass storage mode" AND pull down the task bar and click "transfer files" to get the internal sd to work as mass storage in windows?
Or do they just have to click "mass storage mode" and that's all?
Thanks
I always had to pull down the menu and manually mount the sd card when using mass storage.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Definately wasnt the case on my phone (bought mid october, so its quite new) because I got my music on there via mass storage twice before 'hacking' it. I couldn't have done that without knowing about the extra buttons to press. It's good to know that it's just a side effect of the update.zips I've applied, and that I get to keep the phone
Cheers
For whatever reason, my T2 will not connect to my Win 7 machine running mobile device center. Have gone to the extent of wiping both and starting from scratch, is there a way to flash a ROM without connecting it to a pc or another alternative?
THANKS!
Yes, you can flash from the SD card. There are instruction on how in the n00b guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550540
But basically just use a USB card reader to put the .nbh on the SD card. Put the Sd back in the phone and go into bootloader.
Thanks! I'll give it a shot.
Didn't work, error and failure of transfer of files to SD card connected as external storage. I just wish I knew why I can't connect to WMDC....it doesn't make sense....
Try re-formatting the card, FAT32 as indicated in the n00b instructions.
It's already in FAT 32. I've been flashing roms since my first htc 3 years ago. I've never had a problem until this rom/issue with my computer. I've always synced through the PC and I can't get the damned thing to connect. It's frustrating the hell out of me because this rom keeps hanging and freezing.
Are you using the phone or a card reader to put the .nbh file on theSD card?
I've tried both. I think it's getting to the point where it's the PC i'm using. Which is a problem as all my other computers are Mac or Linux. If WMDC would work I wouldn't be having this problem which is an issue with this PC, I can't get the file over which at this point has to be a problem with this PC. Guess I'm screwed until I can get my hands on someone else's PC... aren't I? I do really appreciate the help!
If you're getting an error using a card reader, the SD card might need to be reformatted. Yes, it might be the PC. But if you don't have any valuable data on the card, I'd try to format it and see if that helps. Also try different USB ports, they can be finnicky sometimes.
There's too much on it to wipe the card until I can get back to one of my Macs over the weekend. This is the first real issue i've had and none of it makes any sense as to why the pc/wmdc won't see or set up a partnership with the phone. I'll try wiping the card when I can, was hoping there was a way to get rid of this rom as it really sucks.
Do you have "Enable faster data synchronization" unchecked under Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC? Some people have had success getting ActiveSync to connect after disabling this, especially with Vista and Windows 7.
What ROM is giving you the headaches, if I may ask?
Im having issues with the internal SD card after the update. So is Dennishwc

Could just be the SD card failing unrelated to the update, but I have no idea. Seems I can copy to an external SD, and then copy via the phone to the internal SD. Odd.
I have tried format via Windows, which resulted in 2.19gb size, but phone reboot reset it to 13gb. Format via phone did not resolve either.
Any fix that will work? or is it borked.
I'll repost my question here.
Did you try the "format internal-sd" from CWM recovery ?
No, Im new-ish to Android so I dont know all the apps to use yet, but have done phone hacking for years on Palm and iOS.
Seems CWM Recovery is a desktop app? I will try when Im off work.

Don't forget to root first. I had a pain rooting this JL1. I spent 20 minutes playing with JL1 and I couldn't stand the lagginess. I'm sure lagfix would've helped, but I just went to a custom ROM instead.
Tried superoneclick only once and I'm rooted even went as far as unlocking it. Also, my phone isn't affected by the sd card bug. I can transfer files bigger than 2.19 Gb and it's showing the full size in Windows. Froyo runs flawless so far even though it's still not clear whether it's official or not.
Hmm, that's an odd one indeed.
Curious - I took a look at the 2 threads that Rye pointed out and one seems to be about external sd issues and the other about the mounting issues with 2.2 vibrant kernels. Doesn't seem like the problem you are having is either one of those... Could be but didn't seem that way upon review.
Did you happen to try and restore any backup after upgrading to 2.2 or anything? Can't imagine what would cause it but seems like it's getting mounted strangely or something... Surprised that a format internal sd wouldn't fix it in recovery...
Second question - what Samsung drivers / driver pack are you using on your Windows 7 x64 install? Wondering if the driver is failing to recognize the file system type and is causing Windows to treat it as a file system that shouldn't accept a file larger than 2+GB...
I havent noticed any problems with the size of the file. What happened with mine is that i transfered a couple of movies (about 3 or so) and then transfered about 4 gigs of music. halfway through the music it started giving me the error. after that, even transferring individual mp3 or pictures would result in an error. The internal sd card showed up on my computer as having 8gig free. after that i ran the check disk (by right clicking, going to properties then tools). my computer found errors and corrected them. after that, the internal sd card showed up as only having like less than a hundred mb left
Riker2k, not sure if the drivers for Windows are the issue. I think I installed some drivers called SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2 that I got from the Samsung website, but I also just installed Kies to get the 2.2 update.
On the XP laptop, I was just using mass storage so it must have been generic drivers that were already on it.
To be clear, its usually shows as correct size in Windows explorer, but when I go to the format utility in Windows, it shows 2.19gb.
Im about to do the CWM recovery format and will post the results.
If you are using the Rogers 2.2 update with no kernel modifications then the CWM will not work for you.
The Froyo kernel from Samsung comes with Recovery 3e which RomManager can not replace for 2e as 3e requires digitally signed packages.
consider (i have not tried):
- root device
- adb shell
- su
- backup any files you need on /sdcard to /sdcard/external_sd
- use the format commands to re-format /sdcard
-- probably mkfs.vfat or the like.

Yea, really not sure if the drivers are a problem or not. When I checked mine, running the Rogers 2.2, it shows the same as what yours does in the format utility - 2.19GB. That is odd because it seems to set the filesystem type as FAT32 which can easily handle the 13.0GB size of the volume. The properties in Windows show 13.0GB w/ about 11.0GB on my disk that is available...
Regardless, I would be hesitant to format or repair that disk within Windows. Who knows if there is something within Android that is put there as a translation layer that maybe Windows isn't seeing / reading correctly through the driver, etc. I'm sure someone does know but I'm not that guy so if anyone call fill in the details...
And, after just testing on my own system... bang, same issue trying to copy a 900MB file to it... Hmm, this just got interesting.
Going to check a couple of other things, will post result.
I had this exact same issue. The only fix for it that I could find was to do a complete restore of the stock rom. Oh well, nice to have a fresh phone.
Hmm, this is not a fun problem.
Just tested formatting the volume - from within the running phone only, mind you - and the result is strange. After copying everything from my SD card to my computer, with no issues, I unmounted the USB, formatted the card through the settings / sd card storage menu / format internal sd card. Took about 30 seconds after which point I reconnected the device, windows picked it up and I mounted it, recopied about 2GB worth of data to the card with no issues at all. Added an additional 500MB file to it with no issues. Disconnected the device from within windows using the safe removal tray tool, turned off usb connection on the device and then unplugged it. Remount the usb device and windows sees it no issues but I can't copy a single item or create a folder on it. Exact same errors as what Rye described and I encountered the first time.
So, seems like after a fresh format the sd card can be mounted in windows, ONCE, and then all hell breaks loose.
Why??? Will keep testing but looking like I need to move back to my previous di11igaf's ROM. Can't work like this...
Interested in what you find, Rye.
Oh btw, i am able to transfer files with no problems if i connect to the pc in media player mode. I have problems when i am in mass storage and kies connect modes
Riker2k, good stuff. I have no news, Im stuck where I am unless I swap the kernel it seems as I cant use CMW Recovery to format.
This is over my head, so I will for now probably just do a format, load up the card via Windows, and then use the external card to slowly add items when I want to and transfer over to the internal through the handheld. Ghetto. Either our Sd cards will get worse and die, or more people will have issues and it will get patched I guess?
Dennishwc, I will try media player mode but I think it did nothing when I connected that way the other day. I didnt mess with it much though. I need mass storage to use iSyncr app though, but there is a wi-fi add-on that may help me avoid that.
Well I just tried the format and dump a lot of stuff via Windows idea, and it only did about 2.2gb before the error stopped the fun. It did this twice, so this is is EXACTLY at the 2.19gb capacity that Windows is seeing in the format utility. So, I do have some news.
Again, this is over my head as to what to do next.
Has anyone tried moving files over via adb and see if you hit a 2.19GB limit?
I am having the same issue when copy files while connected in USB Mass Storage Mode (consistent).
On the plus side, I also tried connecting in USB Kies Mode, and I have yet to see this error. Copying is slower; but, it seems to work.
This could be a workaround for folks getting the error in Mass Storage Mode.
I am running Rogers 2.2 (all stock) and rooted with SuperOneClick.
i'm having the exact same problem. if i pick "mass storage" i can't copy anything over hte internal sd card, but if i use "media play" option, i can do it without any problem. i guess that's a temporary solution
i'm having the same problem, though the size and free space of the internal storage shows up correctly in my system.
i can also copy files no problem to the external SD when in mass storage mode.
i just got this micro usb flash drive
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RBGYGPG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00
plug it in and not recognized at all. is there something special i need to do to get this to work? it works fine on my computer.
What app are you using to mount / view it?
What file system is it formatted to?

i assumed i could just plug it in and it would be recognized by any file explorer like es file explorer
i didn't receive any instructions or anything with it not sure what is needed to do to make it work
I have the same otg drive. All I did was: Plugged it in, went to Settings, Storage and erased usb storage. Checked in Solid Explorer and everything was good to go.

yeah, i don't get it this thing must be defective and very well could be since i got it from Amazon Warehouse.
I have even tried using Stickmount which supossedly mounts these drives for Nexus devices and it will not mount. i can't see it no matter what i try. just tried reformatting as well and nothing.

i want to say it is formatted in NTFS but i will try fat32 as well? i know ive tried two different formats as well. doesn't show up anywhere. from all the yotube videos i've watched minimally it is recognized with an icon when plugged in. i've never gotten that
EDIT - ok went and made certain to format to fat32. had to download a tool to do it in windows since my drive is 64gb. still will not recognize this drive. i rebooted, nothing. damn, no idea why.

I'm not sure if ntfs will work or not, I'm almost certain it will not, but I haven't tried it. I'm only suggesting fat32 because that's what mine is. When I plug it in, an icon shows in the status bar for just a split second.
Edit: Just seen your edit. I have no idea why either. I can't imagine anything being wrong with it, since it works fine on your computer? Will twrp recognize it? (If you have twrp installed)

in TWRP i assume it is not recognizing it either, but it does list USB-OTG (0MB)
there is nothing on the disc at all so twrp must just list usb-otg by default and it won't let me select it either

Just to make sure, for it to mount in twrp, you do need to have the USB plugged in before twrp boots. Twrp does list usb-otg by default. When it's working properly it will show the amount of free space in place of the 0MB.

ok yes, i definitely had it correct then. had it plugged in before going to twrp.
essentially, i bought a return at a low price off of Amazon warehouse. i don't understand how this thing could be fine in a pc or my chromebook, but it definitely will not show up on android. it must be defective. it would help if there were a light or something on the flash drive to show when its connected though.
i just tried it in my galaxy mega and it didn't show up either.
so i'll return it and try another one. i appreciate you trying to help.

Yeah I guess it might be defective. Maybe try another fat32 formatter? (Probably won't help any) I used 2Tware to format mine. Good luck anyways though!
I don't see any mention in this thread of EXFAT. I say this because I was having problems just yesterday (coincidentally) with TWRP 2.8 not recognising my OTG USB formatted as NTFS. Although TWRP showed the NTFS USB in the backup destination list, I couldn't select it. When I formatted as EXFAT, it worked in Windows, Lollipop & TWRP.
Method - Windows 10, Tools, Format - dropdown box select EXFAT.
(I believe that Stickmount provides an extension for reading & writing NTFS USB volumes, but that doesn't help for TWRP.)
Give it a go - nothing to lose...
I found I had to install Stickmount to mount my usbotg drives. I did install the supplemental files that allow ntfs and it works fine to mount/unmount external memory including an external 750Gb hard disk. [Edit] Didn't try with TWRP.
