http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RBGYGPG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00
plug it in and not recognized at all. is there something special i need to do to get this to work? it works fine on my computer.

What app are you using to mount / view it?
What file system is it formatted to?

i assumed i could just plug it in and it would be recognized by any file explorer like es file explorer
i didn't receive any instructions or anything with it not sure what is needed to do to make it work

I have the same otg drive. All I did was: Plugged it in, went to Settings, Storage and erased usb storage. Checked in Solid Explorer and everything was good to go.

yeah, i don't get it this thing must be defective and very well could be since i got it from Amazon Warehouse.
I have even tried using Stickmount which supossedly mounts these drives for Nexus devices and it will not mount. i can't see it no matter what i try. just tried reformatting as well and nothing.

i want to say it is formatted in NTFS but i will try fat32 as well? i know ive tried two different formats as well. doesn't show up anywhere. from all the yotube videos i've watched minimally it is recognized with an icon when plugged in. i've never gotten that
EDIT - ok went and made certain to format to fat32. had to download a tool to do it in windows since my drive is 64gb. still will not recognize this drive. i rebooted, nothing. damn, no idea why.

I'm not sure if ntfs will work or not, I'm almost certain it will not, but I haven't tried it. I'm only suggesting fat32 because that's what mine is. When I plug it in, an icon shows in the status bar for just a split second.
Edit: Just seen your edit. I have no idea why either. I can't imagine anything being wrong with it, since it works fine on your computer? Will twrp recognize it? (If you have twrp installed)

in TWRP i assume it is not recognizing it either, but it does list USB-OTG (0MB)
there is nothing on the disc at all so twrp must just list usb-otg by default and it won't let me select it either

Just to make sure, for it to mount in twrp, you do need to have the USB plugged in before twrp boots. Twrp does list usb-otg by default. When it's working properly it will show the amount of free space in place of the 0MB.

ok yes, i definitely had it correct then. had it plugged in before going to twrp.
essentially, i bought a return at a low price off of Amazon warehouse. i don't understand how this thing could be fine in a pc or my chromebook, but it definitely will not show up on android. it must be defective. it would help if there were a light or something on the flash drive to show when its connected though.
i just tried it in my galaxy mega and it didn't show up either.
so i'll return it and try another one. i appreciate you trying to help.

Yeah I guess it might be defective. Maybe try another fat32 formatter? (Probably won't help any) I used 2Tware to format mine. Good luck anyways though!

I don't see any mention in this thread of EXFAT. I say this because I was having problems just yesterday (coincidentally) with TWRP 2.8 not recognising my OTG USB formatted as NTFS. Although TWRP showed the NTFS USB in the backup destination list, I couldn't select it. When I formatted as EXFAT, it worked in Windows, Lollipop & TWRP.
Method - Windows 10, Tools, Format - dropdown box select EXFAT.
(I believe that Stickmount provides an extension for reading & writing NTFS USB volumes, but that doesn't help for TWRP.)
Give it a go - nothing to lose...

I found I had to install Stickmount to mount my usbotg drives. I did install the supplemental files that allow ntfs and it works fine to mount/unmount external memory including an external 750Gb hard disk. [Edit] Didn't try with TWRP.

Help my SD Card Wont Mount

I can access my sd card through a reader but I can't access my phone through usb (but it still charges). I have 2 partitions, one is fat32 (with some music, pictures and stuff) and another is ext3 (i reformatted it last night thinking it might be that but it wasn't)
Basically, I've tried it on xp, vista, win7 but win7 and vista it says it has malfunctioned and then when I go device manager its called unknown device
I have used swapper and most likely did try to mount my phone which I've heard screws up your card. So before I do it do I need to reformat my fat32 partition and if I do have to should I reformat it to fat32 or fat?
Or is there another solution?
Thank you
Have you tried formatting it from within the G1. settings->sd card -> format? You'll want Fat32 if formatting elsewhere, also if you want multiple partitions I'd try formatting the whole card first, then partitioning/formatting again.
Make sure you have a drive letter assigned to the FAT32 partition. (Eg. F:/)
hmmm
On xp it just says unknown device, I've reformated from my pc (the fat32 partition) maybe it would be an idea to do it from the phone. I just don't know what to do tbh I mean its weird. Do you think its to do with app2sd?
hmm
And I can't sign a driver letter because it doesn't come up with mount on my phone all it does it charge

Are you using the data cable that came with the phone? I lost mine a while back and tried using just a regular USB to Type A (the port on the phone) on the phone and got the same results. It'll use the power from the USB drive but won't mount or even connect.
Also, you might want to try to install the Android USB Driver for Windows. It's floating around here somewhere, just do a search for it.
If you have adb installed there's a command called ?adb kill server? or something like that. Sry on phone right now but a google search should help. Sometimes this process has been knows to fix similar problems where the pc doesn't recognize the phone. Not sure why it woult effect mass storage tho. But wth worth a try I suppose.
Well I'm using the data cable that came with the phone, adb remount just gives error:device not found and I have usb drivers because I have used this phone on this laptop before so you know
This is annoying
I've tried reflashing my spl but still no dice, I just dont get it :S
Like everyone else has stated, Format your entire card to fat32 and setup your partitions again. That should do it. the SPL doesn't really affect it. GL
Ill have a go
Right I'm going to have a go now
Ill tell you my results
Good luck Kushion!
I had the same problem only my sd card would actually show and mount for a second then unmount. I finally gave up and went and bought an sd card .
this is what I do now.
vm ware player http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
I believe with this running and a guest os I can mount the sd card.
I know for sure that I can do it with ubuntu but im not completely sure with windows 7.
This is also good for "sandboxing" programs or testing files to see if they have a virus. by running the guest os in the virtual software you are not infecting your main os . I use it when i wanna test things but dont wanna run the risk of borking my main os.
god daaaaaaaaammit
right I have deleted the ext3 partiton and then reformated it all to fat32, I then wiped, I then reinstalled cyragon firmware and booted and guess what...
doing the same thing :|
It lets in power but doesn't let me mount, doesnt even give me the option
I am having the same exact problem. My work computer, have always used it, same cable, same everything, then all of the sudden today I came to work, had some downtime was going to mess with my phone and it won't recognize my phone. Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers at least ten times but to no avail. Any help greatly appreciated.

I know this is a bit old, but the topic got bumped and I saw this one... I do most of my "work" on my phone here at the office, and just use a standard MiniUSB cord with no problem. Not that you're the first one I've heard say that, but I don't think your phone (or PC?) is working right if that is the problem.. The ExtUSB cable that comes with the phone has standard data pins, just extra headset pins - that's the only difference.

Reboot the PC? Maybe an obvious question, but just in case. And.. It sounds like you have a reasonable level of admin access to the PC, but just in case - are you sure your employer hasn't blocked mass storage devices? I'm in IT myself, so I can use it on my PC.. But if I tried to plug my G1 into any of our other PCs here, it would happily charge away but never mount the drive, due to our security policies.
Wow old thread but similar problem...
My wife's G1 won't mount to pc as a mass storage device, however mine does without a problem. I have the drivers, sdk. I can see the phone through adb, it just won't mount. Also, I've tried it on both our pc's which are win7 x64. Check sig for phone details.

Lost.DIR folder, damaged files related with mounting USB card?

Hi,Dear friends, I looked at my sd card today and found that there are around 400mb random-number-named files in this folder. I want to know if I can just delete them?
And I searched the forum and found someone saying it's because the sd card not being properly unmounted from PC. (Or silimar actions) Please see here
I want to know, if it's true, then what is the proper procedure to unmount the card? Usually after I connect it to the pc, I either use the command in the drop down menu or the Mount-USB app on phone's desktop. when I finished with the file copying, then I click mount usb icon again, the word "usb card unmounted" appears (but can't remember exact word) and on the top notification area, it will say preparing sd card. I think that should be ok, right? Then I click safely remove the usb device in the pc then disconnect.
Did I do anything wrong?
What you did wrong? You didn't unmount it!!!!
That means that the filesystem was left in an unsynchronized state, which means DAMAGED.
You need to UNMOUNT the filesystem before you can remount it on the phone.

This operation is not UNMOUNT? then what is your routine after copying files via the phone usb connection?

.... so you violently ripped the thing out of the host's kernel, breaking the filesystem, and then afterward, when the device is no longer accessible to the host's kernel, you decide to unmount it? How is your windoze box going to synchronize a filesystem that it NO LONGER HAS ACCESS TO?
Sure... that makes A LOT of sense!!!
(not...)
As I said, you need to UNMOUNT THE THING before remounting it somewhere else!!!!
The gentler way of saying that ^ is you need to unmount from windows first. then from the phone click the usb icon and unmount.

Oh, Ok, I see.
But the thing is, (maybe because of the rom i used), when I remove the drive in windows first, there are several occasions that the phone unmount the card automatically and there are also notifications that the card is being prepared, then looks normal. And after that when I access the media on the sd card from the phone, the phone will not recognize the card. In Gallery all the thumbnails are lost and pictures can't be viewed. And from settings the card will not show up, no size information. It looks like it's mounted to the usb connection, but actually it's unmounted. because now if I click the mount usb, it will be mounted again and can be seen from windows.
I didn't use any android before nor did I familiar with linux. If it's a thumbdrive I'll just remove it from windows and it's fine. Here it's like two computer systems and I really don't know which action should take place at the first place. Also I never saw a post related with this problem.
At first I thought I should do the way as you said but strange thing always happen. So later I just did like I discribed before.
Maybe I should flash another rom? what do you think?

When you correctly unmount the filesystem, the phone will properly detect that the filesystem has been changed, and therefore will be SMART ENOUGH to regenerate your MEDIA DATABASE.
You need to GIVE IT TIME TO FINISH!!!
This is the CORRECT BEHAVIOR!

I lol'd at the "Violently ripped out..." part.
An image of the angry german kid, and a G1...
Personally I don't remove my SD card unless my phone is off (generally the only time I tinker with it is if I forget something while using recovery)
But think of it this way. If you yank out a flash drive in use from a computer there is risk of data loss, and the flash drive itself failing. I'd say it's a universal piece of knowledge that applies to all flash devices.
*points at you* Only YOU, can prevent data loss!

OHHH! Taking out sdcards... I only pull my out when it's off and don't have access to a computer that will mount my phone (which is one in a million times). Then again, I don't use ext partition. Still probably bad if I pulled out when it was on, but no where near as bad.

As you said, I also never yank out any flash drive or card reader without "safely remove the usb device". However, when I just connect phone to the PC using USB cord to read the data on the sd card, it makes it a little bit complicated, because what I saw on the phone. I'm not sure here. so I want to ask.

USB OTG and TWRP?

Hello there
I am able to mount my flash drive using my OTG cable when running my ROM (TrickDroid) just fine by using this application to mount it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.shajul.usbotg&hl=en&rdid=net.shajul.usbotg&rdot=1
However I cannot for the life of me mount it using TWRP, which is why I got the OTG cable in the first place so I can format my SD card and then install a ROM without having to push/sideload it using ADB which takes a lot of time and isn't very practical and a bit messy. When I press Install and choose OTG USB I see beside it (0MB) and it's not mounting, of course.
Thanks
Please remove this thread, I have already fixed it by formatting the flash drive as FAT32 instead of NTFS.

Is USB Mass storage possible?

I Is it possible to mount the internal storage as USB Mass Storage device on the PC. I like to sync the memory to PC from time to time. It is important that the internal storage is mounted as a separate drive and not a portable device.

Yes, just select the USB notification you get when you connect it and instead of charging you can choose to mount it as a drive.

When I select File Transfer option, it mounts as a portable device and not with a drive letter. As a portable drive I am able to access the files but cannot do automated backups using many backup software. Need to mount with a drive letter.

There's a reason for that. Read this:

Alternatively, you could enable USB debugging and use ADB commands or something to back up device data.

Lol! My linux box can read any file system. The issue is that internal storage is part of data now.
That said usb mass storage drivers work fine. There is a virtual cd drive with drivers. Im just wondering what linux /dev that is on the phone so I can wipe it and cram something else in there… make a rescue boot out of my phone!

Problem with using a thumb drive as expanded memory

I've had a Chromecast with Google TV for about a week. I added a usb stick for added memory . I'm in developer mode and have unknown sources on. Using the X-plore file manager, I sideloaded games with obb files onto the drive with no problem. However, a few days later, the Chromecast got laggy (unrelated I hope) and I had to do a factory reset. Since then, X-plore will not show the USB drive if I'm using the USB stick as device storage. I'm pretty sure that was the way I had the stick formatted before. When the stick is formatted for external storage, I can't transfer data to it. When it's formatted as device storage, it's not recognized on the file manager. Also, the file manager won't allow for an obb folder. I get a msg saying it's not allowed.
How did I screw this up? Please help :fingers-crossed:
Thanks from a confused noob

I think I figured it out last night. After I factory rebooted it, I didn't change some of the storage permissions on the apps .
Can't seem to get passed read only error with x-plore. Do I need to format to fat32 and how. PC is old and only gives me option for exfat and ntsf. Thanks in advance
