Change radio w/o changing ROM? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Is it feasible to change the radio without changing the ROM?
I am running the stock WM6.1, but my WiFi sucks since I installed my home wireless system. I installed a linksys WRT110 RANGEPLUS wireless router...range is good for my laptop, but the Tilt is good out to about 20 feet with the stock radio.

I don't think the radio has anything to do with wireless, just the camera, sound and cell radio.

hey, 2 quick questions b4 this is closed down:
the stock roms(and their upgrades), do these upgrade files(they just have 1 big .exe file, and no .nbh file) also change your radio?
and secondly, since i changed roms, radio and spl, my gps is now a couple thousand meters off point, would this be bcuz of my rom/radio/spl, or are the satellites just havn a bad day. (satellite..having a bad day....... get it.... lmao)

its ok to change radio without changing rom..changing radio is for you to get a good signal from your service provider and gps i think..and for your wifi problems change your kaiser wifi settings to full performance, it might be in full battery option..

Well, even though I live in the boonies, I have a full strength HSDPA signal and my GPS works like a charm.
WiFi worked well at some hotspots in the past, but now, not so much, especially with the set up I have in the house.
Don't matter, I have the unlimited data plan, and 8meg cable for internet.
Just thought I could get the WiFi working better.

Is the Radio related to tethering speed?

I have a HTC Tilt with a Dutty WM6.1 ROM and radio 1.64.08.21.
Before I did any ROM updates I swear tethering was faster. I remember going to speedtest.net and I was getting speed up to 1100kb/s and 250kb/s upload. now after upgrading to a new ROM it seems a lot slower. I also did a radio upgrade about a week later but everything seemed the same. i went to speedtest.net today and i get 126kb/s upload and 100kb/s. Now if I upgrade radios when I get home will that help or am I just wasting my time? Could it be something else?

I am assuming with those speeds that would be 3G are you sure your phone is still picking up the 3G signal? A radio can make a difference, but I doube that much, it seems more like its not picking up the 3G.
It has the 3g icon on the front. It should be working as I go into areas that doesn't have the signal and the icon goes away. is there another way to determine I'm actually connected to 3g?

So many things can affect tethering speed it's hard sometimes to truelly judge..the 3G icon can be slow to fade...different radio's will change some things...some appear to be more responsive with less latency on a particular network or provider. However unless you are testing them back to back on identical phones at the same time it's going to be hard to accurately judge....a network's speed and responsiveness can change from minute to minute based on the activity going on in that particular area...or if a key tower is down for maintenance...etc....If you do test different radio's try to be in a stable location and do it in the early morning hours when traffic is low...that way you minimize interference by external sources.
I guess I'll try to upgrade radios anyway. It's been this slow since I upgraded which was about a month ago. I use tethering 5 times a week for 8 hours a day so im pretty sure that my testing has been consistant.

I would try the 1.58.16.27 NIKI radio. I tether frequently and my speeds are incredibly fast (around 1.5mbps).

Is there something wrong with my Tilt's Wifi?

i dont know exactly what wifi should be like on a Tilt, because to me, the signal has always sucked big time. From stock, to shipped rom, to plenty of cooked roms, and lots of radios.
Example: I have a wrt54gl. very good router. i go out on my balcony to smoke, and its approx 20 feet away from my router. Nokia N95 in left hand says 95% signal strength. Tilt in right hand says, nothing. my router is not found.
Is there maybe something wrong with the wifi on mine? or is it just a joke on the tilt?
Works fine here, where my laptop has a very weak signal the Kaiser won't see it, but not worse than that.
yeah kaisers seem to be hit and miss on the wifi, some of us have very poor signal's and perfomance.
I've tried multiple roms, hard spl's, radio's, loads of wifi settings, routers, wep or wpa security, unlcoked networks, nothings works.
Some people have no problems and great signals.
My htc hermes had a brilliant signal could be on wifi in the garden or any room in the house, now in the room next to the router the kasier gets a 1 bar signal, and will drop the connection sometimes.
I believe some of them are just faulty, i've heard of a few people retuning them and the replacement being perfect, so sounds like a bad batch but it seems to effect t-mobile mda's and at&t tilts at least, not sure anbout htc's, oranges, xda's etc.
Yes, The Kaiser has an under powered WiFi chip and a weak internal antenna.
To top it off almost all ROMs have the setting to "Best Battery." There is a WiFi setting of "Best Performance" that helps the strengths but sucks up battery like a Dyson Vaccum.
Go to your Comm Manager -> Settings -> Wireless LAN. Power Mode (tab). There you can play with the Slider. See if that helps.

Very poor wifi performance

For an unknown reason my diamond performs really poorly with wifi ?
My iphone and ps3 always have a 100% signal but on my diamond im lucky to get 2 bars. Even when I have 4 its still very very slow.
Any ideas ? Dodgy wifi in the phone ?
My Diamond is set to best performance therefore that cant be the issue

What ROM do u Have?? Radio???
Latest radio ROMS are pretty good. For example, the .07 and .08 are good Radio Roms with great reception. I like .05 which save a little more battery and still i have 5 bars no matter were i am

Hi, the radio .18 are good? improve wifi?
I have the same problem...thanks
Have you tried to set the power setting of your Wifi to "best performance" (away from "battery saving mode")? that should help, i guess.
Hi
I have the ROM that comes with the Orange Uk fones.
I believe its the 1.137.405.1 WWE ROM
and
1.00.25.03 Radio version
I have no trouble with signal strength with my diamond, but when I go into the properties for wireless while I am connected to my Linksys 54g Access Point, the Diamond shows me as having a 54mbps transmit rate and only a 1mbps receive rate.
This happens even if I am standing beside the access point. I could careless about how fast I send data, I want to be able to play movies via the wireless from my mediacenter box. But obviously with 1mbps it stops and starts all the time while it buffers the data.
Should I have 54 on both send and receive assuming signal is good. Is there anything in the Router that could cause this, I haven't noticed any issues with my 2 laptops.
Is there any software that can show me what the send receive rates individually are in Vista, so I can compare ?
*BUMP*
Does anyone have an answer/tweak to this? I'm also suffering from this issue.
TIA
Angus

EDGE/GPRS/3G Questions/Issues/Info

This might be a silly question, but does anyone know if the G1 will be able to access the web if you live in an area where 3G is not available yet? I live north of Los Angeles (who has 3G) in Bakersfield and we don't have it yet. I am hoping that I was not an idiot to preorder the phone and then not be able to use all the cool web features.
Thanks in advance,
Jamie
it should still work on the EDGE network
From my understanding it will work with GPRS, Edge, and 3g so you shouldn't have any problems bro by the way I understand the concern.
With a 1150ma battery, GPS, "big" screen etc, 3G will just drain the battery even quicker.
I will not worry about 3G until an extended battery is released- and the fact that 3G will not be in my market for a year of so.

Hey guys i have a htc wing now, and it does not have a gps. It looks like the gps for this phone is one of the main highlights, because it uses it for a lot of applications. Does anyone know what the gps strength will be like? Will it work will in a building, it do i have the be in direct light for like ten minuites to get a signal?
Anyone with a htc device with a gps already, does it work well?
I hear the android is a-gps, so mabye it will have the ability to somewhat work well when in a pocket, or building.....

Time for a lesson on GPS... It uses satellites in the sky, and you need a view of a certain amount of satellites to find your location (4 will find you but not very accurately, the more the better). If you're in a building, and not right next to a window, no GPS will ever find your location, ever. That's like asking if your internet will work if the ethernet cable is unplugged from the back of your computer and you don't have wifi, it goes against the entire idea of how it functions.
Now, as for the quality of the HTC GPS receiver... People have complained about GPS lag, but I maintain my opinion that it's completely software related, my Fuze had none whatsoever. You don't need to be in sunlight, just have enough clear sky that it can get a reading from the satellites. I've taken trips with the Fuze even on very cloudy days and it took a little longer to get a lock (5-10 mins, it locks in like 30 seconds to a minute with clear skies) but once it had my position, it stayed true. All of the upcoming HTC devices use A-GPS, by the way. Diamond, Touch Pro, Xperia, G1...

He's using the battery draining as an excuse, something to keep him from pulling his hair out because he won't have 3G for another year. Anyone who's used a phone for data features on both networks knows EDGE doesn't hold a candle to 3G.
As for the original post, yes, it will give you all of the same data features on EDGE as on 3G.
The big thing with A-GPS is that it's mainly used to increase the startup speed of your GPS. Instead of waiting 10 minutes to download the almanac of the satellites in the sky from the GPS sats, it downloads the data over your data connection, using the basis of which cell site you're connected to for determining your rough location. This way it only takes about 30 seconds to get a fix instead of much longer.
The sensitivity of the GPS on phones has been fairly good as far as i've seen on devices like the Tilt and such, so I don't see why a phone with such a heavy emphasis on location-based apps would have a sub-par GPS setup. Here's hoping things work well.

Exactly... But when you're without 3G, I guess you try to justify why it's not as good, and that's what he came up with. It's like everything though, people on here try to justify why the iPhone isn't as good as the Diamond/Touch Pro, truth be told it's better in many aspects but comes short in many as well.
3g data transfer?
ok i currently have the tmo wing.. and i can connect my lappy to the tmo data network via usb port.. will i be able to do this with the g1?yes/no maybe?

I choose D... all of the above
No... it will not work out of the box.
Yes/maybe... it should work someday soon unless HTC/T-Mobile have somehow disabled that ability in hardware.
As soon as I get the phone I will be working on it on the Linux side (not an actual internet sharing app... more of a route/iptables script) and I am sure someone will work on a java solution (although a kernel solution would be faster). There was an application for the iPhone that provided internet sharing but it was banned from apple store and Google has said they won't do that so I think it should be here soon.

I have an issue with my G1 WIFI connection. If i broadcast my SSID I connect with no problems. but if i disable the broadcast it will not connect, and this is with me manually putting in the connections into the phone.
I called TMobile but they said i needed to call HTC. they didn't have a solution.
BTW, I have no WEP enabled. I just disable the SSID broadcast.
I just connected to my Linksys router with WPA2 and had 3G running, connected no problem.
Haitiankid: try entering the details of your network manually and seeing if it will connect then. Also, as for the 3G fading in and out, are you in a week signal area for 3G?
wifi working
I got my wifi to work. It was my routers fault. What I did was in went into my routers settings by typing 192.168.1.1 and entered 'admin' (no quotes) and no password. Once in my settings I changed my brocasting type from b&g mixed to all mixed changed frequency to auto, changed network key from shared to open and wifi started working. I don't know if all those steps were neccesary but it worked for me. Hope it works for some else.
As for the 3g it seems to be getting better
for those of you with the 3g/edge switching problem...
Hey, if uve got the 3g switching to edge back and forth continuously, its likely because you didnt get a new SIM card when u got the g1. It simply means you have an old SIM card that doesnt support 3g well, call tmobile up tell them your situation, theyve given most people a free new SIM card thats more compatible.

I don't think that's the case. I've had the same SIM card since 2000, no problems like this. If any SIM is too old to support 3G, I'd think one made 8 years ago would definitely be the case.
It sounds like he's in a bad coverage area, which could be lots of things. There is a coverage map on the T-Mo website, don't know if it shows 3G. Or it could be the building he's in. My phones have never worked at my grandmother's house. I get full bars on the front porch, and full bars the second I get out the back door, but no signal in the house itself. Even relatives on other networks get little to no coverage inside the house. Probably the really really old insulation and building materials are blocking the signal. At my last apartment I only had a good signal on the corner of my bed, and that disappeared when new neighbors moved in upstairs.
These are radio waves, which aren't foolproof or perfect, they encounter all kinds of interference. Nothings going to be as secure and consistant as a wired connection. Nature of the beast, unfortunately.

Careful dude, with the security set to open anyone within range (neighbors, wardrivers, etc.) can use your wifi to get on the internet. Try using WPA or WPA2 security, but leaving it all mixed and frequency at auto.

Slow WIFI on HD7

Hi guys,
I'm currently running Deepshining v7.2 and I noticed my Wifi speeds are no where near my 3g speed. Is there a fix for this without putting my phone into airplane mode when I want to use wifi? I'd like to use my wifi at home to use less data and be able to receive calls/text. By the way, all other phone/pc work fine with the router that I'm using so that is not the issue.
Thank you for your help.
Deepshining ROM contains a Radio.
trying flashing a different Radio. link to all Schubert Radios in my signature.
what does the radio have to do with my WiFi? Don't all roms come with a radio?
yes all roms come with radio, and diff radios respond differently to each phone.
some get better responce (work better) and some dont
so do what sh4d0w86 has stated and try diff radio to fix your problem
cheers and have a gr8 day
thanks button is next to qoute button
Sorry but i don't see any correlation between te radio and WiFi. Can someone explain?
Radio controls all wireless connectivity.
its possible if u change the registry power state to 0 ( full power) u may see some improvements in speed.
I loaded the latest EU radio on mine, and I am tmous. Made a huge difference and I am getting fast connects to WiFi, and great throughput
Sent from my HD7 T9292 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Maybe u mordem got some problem, don't just pay attention to ur phone, ur phone can't connect to wifi just by itslef。。。。
My fiance's HD7 has encountered the exact same problem lately. When in the house, her wifi connection is painfully slow. It's not the broadband or the modem as my Galaxy s2, xbox, PS3, media streamer, laptop etc have no problems with speed or connection. It's so bad that even switching wi-fi off improves the connection, even though 3G is quite patchy at our house.
Now that she's at work however, her GPRS/3G connection is running slow too. Anyone got any idea what this might be?
have you tried flashing a different Radio??
or perhaps try a different ROM, if using a Custom ROM?
Not tried that. Where would I find that and is there a guide on how to do that?
