DIAM110 compatibility in europe? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

My wife has a diam110
ROM vs: 1.93.422.4 wwe
Radio vs: 1.00.25.08 (I am sure these are the most ancient versions out there)
Currently using it on Tmobile (with only EDGE data)
Despite searching (sorry, I personally use the CDMA version, so I am a bit of a noob with the gsm phones) I haven't quite figured out the whole band issue (or at least confirmed it)-- I thought the diam110 was just 850/1800/1900 but of course the phone is being used on tmobile which I thought was 900, so does the rom being used allow for quadband 850/900/1800/1900? I have seen the phone listed on the web as triband and sometimes as quadband - is there anyway to know for sure? The data is only edge which I believe is due to the 850/1900 band for HSDPA (ATT?).
So, we are going to Italy and Greece (which I believe are typically 900/1800 band) in a couple of days and I wanted to confirm that the phone service will work (with a sim card). I also assume that we could use edge service but not UMTS: This site http://www.saveonroaming.net/shop_eng.html for example, has data on 900/1800 umts. Since this is a diam110, I assume that UMTS is a no go. But edge should still work?
Also, I assume that changing the phone over to ATT in the US will allow the HSDPA service?
Thank you for any assistance you all can provide.

3g for att

Is there a version of the diamond that will get 3g with att us ?(850mhz band) I have seen the update that gives the 850 band but I was told it isnt for the 3g. I really want a diamond but not having 3g is gonna be a real deal breaker for me.
I've got 850MHz on 3G here with the 1.00.25.05 radio ROM which came on my device (works on Telstra NextG here in Australia which is 850MHz HSDPA).
really? I just read where the fcc just passed the us version of the diamond for the 850 band on hsdpa. Anyone else can confirm they are getting 3g with there diamond in the us?

No I did not, I have the UK version. The Australian version isn't available for another few weeks.
no it is out now but only in certain telstra stores...
so how do you know you are operating on the 3g 850Mhz band???
what radio and firmware are you using?
i want my next g speeds!
I know I'm on the 850MHz band as that's what Telstra NextG uses (with HSDPA). As I said above, radio version is 1.00.25.05 and ROM is WWE 1.93.405.1. All this info is in my signature as well.
3G on ATT
I just got my Diamond Touch today and it came with the
RADIO: 1.00.25.05
ROM: 1.93.456.2 WWE Dated (7/10/08)
O/S: CE 5.2.19965 (Build 19965.1.2.3)
I'm only getting (E)dge on AT&T
No (G) or (H)
My upgraded TILT/TYN II connects to G3 and H at my location here in Los Angeles.
I hope someone figures out a way to get at least a G3 and 850Mhz radio.
Does it just need to be unlocked ??

Hi#
In another thread somone posted that Telstra uses 850mhz for its 3g network and 2100mhz for its joint 3g venture with 3. I'd be happy though if they used 850/900mhz for 3g in the uk though
I am totally confused here, Everything that I have read says that there is no way that the diamond's that are currently out there has the 850 band hsdpa. No software update is suppose to give it the hsdpa band because it lacks the HARDWARE. I know that the gprs band of 850 is able, is it possible that you are connecting to some other band of 3g in your area? I really wanna buy a diamond but I dont wanna be stuck with this phone and not be able to use 3g in my area (us) PLEASE SOMEONE ELSE SHED SOME LIGHT HERE. There are people in this thread that say it dont work and then there are people that are saying it does, thanks for any help
Not true. It's not a hardware issue, it's radio issue.
After you get the diamond and flash that radio there is a setting to change the band. I don't remember it though T.T
can someone confirm that i can use the diamond on us 3g band (850) by just a new radio and setting?
She's probably getting the 2100mhz HSDPA band in AUS unless she's edited the radio, the phone is only capable of 900/2100mhz HSDPA right now. Here's the killer... The Touch Pro just passed FCC... And no HSDPA/UMTS/WCDMA whatsoever. No 3G.

vodafone Australia, which diamond ?

Hi All
hoping you can give some advice here, I'm currently with vodafone Australia and looking at buying a diamond.
Currently they are available locally as the Telstra HTC touch diamond (competing network) or via grey import models.
I understand through numerous threads that there is no quad band model as yet and that telstra uses 3g on the 850mhz band, i think but am not sure that vodafone uses 2100mhz for 3g.
I'm confused as to which handset im better off with the telstra one or a grey import.
To make it more confusing I'm going to USA and Sth America, shortly and want to make sure it roams on 3g.
HELP!!!!
no-one even has an opinion?!?
After scouring the rest of the 'net it appears that;
telstra uses 850mhz hsdpa,
vodafone and optus uses 2100mhz umts,
optus will launch 900mhz hsdpa in the near future.
I gather from this that no matter which australian carrier network i use i will not be able to use one carrier or another does someone have any further insight on this?
I think I read on Whirlpool that the Telstra handsets should work on any network - except Optus' 900mhz.
Im with Telstra (work sim), so just went with the Telstra handset.
I've got a Virgin sim I could try in it if you'd like?
that would help . . . cheers
It cant do any harm... I guess my real issue is that I want to make sure I'm getting the highest possible data speeds in whatever country I'm in and I'm not sure what difference there is between the carrier frequency's being used. I get the general impression that only telstra has 7.2mps (theoretical) speed at present, but if i go with a handset that doesnt support 900mhz and i end up with 2100mhz am i missing out on vodafone hsdpa......
im consfused
I was in the same boat when trying to figure out which Diamond to get. I jumped ship and ordered a DIAM130 (Telstra ver.).
Its my understanding that the Optus 900MHz UMTS will be for use in regional areas, whereas 2100MHz for metropolitan. A quick search of the net also indicated that 2100MHz is the dominant UMTS band throughout most of the world, with the exception of the U.S. which uses 850/1900 I believe. So I figure the DIAM130 would be the best bet if you want some sort of 3G connection whatever country you may be in.
If I'm mistaken, can someone please correct me...
EDIT: Looking back at your posts, I'm not sure if you realise this, but the DIAM100 is 900/2100 MHz UMTS and the DIAM130 is 850/2100 MHz UMTS.
Yep, I think the Helstra one with 850mhz/2100mhz looks like the best bet. It would seem that all the carriers in Oz use the 2100mhz in the cities and 850mhz or 900mhz in rural areas.
The US and Sth.America seem to use 850mhz and Europe uses 900mhz/2100mhz.
The whole reason this came up was about 2 weeks ago I went into a Helstra shop and HTC had a marquis with their own staff, they actually stated do not buy a Helstra handset wait until October 1 when the other networks will have quadband handsets. I put this down to them not knowing what they were talking about.
I cant wait any longer though and I think I'm off to JB HiFi to pickup a telstra one, whirlpool forum users have been picking them up for between $750 and $800.
I bought my Diamond from JB (telstra phone bought outright) and I use it with voda prepaid.
I can access the GSM network fine and their 3G network as well. But I force my phone to use GSM only, apparently 3G drinks more battery power.
I am on the vodaphone network ( work). I bought a diamond from a H/K supplier & have never had anytrouble using the 3g network in any of the main capital cities.
Unless you intend to use 3g A LOT in the country areas of australia, then a presumably cheaper grey import DIA 100 will do the trick.
only would suggest that you upgrade to one of the great ROMS available on this site from the generous chefs!
sorry but i think telstra are ripping off the aussie customers with the 130 model.
I have a DIAM100, it works on all networks in Australia including Telstra NextG (yes it DOES work on 850MHz HSDPA). I currently use the phone on the 3 network which use 2100MHz and get very good speeds (in excess of 3.5mbps).
Hi poedgirl,
noticed your'e using an older radio version than whats currently available.
at the risk of telling you to suck eggs, i would suggest you try the 1.00.25.08 Radio rom as the increase in signal phone strength & GPS strength was unbelievable!
thats assuming you are located in Sydney
This Post in the ROMs section pretty much covers which models you can use or will need on the various AU networks.
There are 3 3G Network Frequencies in AUS
850 MHz (NextG) - DIAM130
900 MHz Optus - DIAM100, DIAM110, DIAM200, DIAM300
2100 MHz Optus, Vodafone, Three, Telstra(use Three's) - DIAM100, DIAM110, DIAM200, DIAM300, DIAM130
ALL Diamonds have the 2100MHz frequency!

sorry to disappoint, I used to think the same, but see this and this You are right - it uses HSDPA, but only on the 2100 network, outside of that network the phone will show "E" for "edge" .(which is GPRS).
Thanks timn2087, that what I thought. I suspect the Telstra branding and web interface can lead you to believe you are on the Telstra NextG network, regardless of whether you are connecting with a phone capable of 850MHz or 2100MHz. My DIAM100 (Same hardware) on 3 behaves exactly as you describe when it roams onto Telstra GSM displaying "E" for "edge".
i bought the helstra one
well i just went for it, and bought the diam130. ive gone the hardspl, radio 05, swift rom. all seems to working.
got if for $760 outright at jb hifi pitt st mall sydney store. no stress haggle said to the guy whats the best price he said $800 i said how about $760 he goes "done".
thanks for all your help everyone

correct. The DIAM130 on Next G will show a 3G icon whenever it is on 850 Mhz, occasionally this icon changes to "H" HSDPA when a data connection is active.

Well, for one, the phone gets a HSDPA signal in Mandurah - where there is no 3 coverage (only ever get Telstra roaming there if you're with 3). Also, as others have said, if you are on 3's network, the network shows up as "3Telstra", which it does not on mine.

850/2100 3G Diamond on Rogers CA?

I haven't found any answers so I've decided to "ask the audience".
To my understanding the Rogers Canada network uses 850/1900 for it's 3G primarily 850. Is this true?
I haven't found a mention of a North American release date for the GSM Diamond. Anyone know the date? I don't expect it till around Christmas.
I'm looking at an Australian Diamond that uses the 850/2100 bands for 3G. Will the support of the 850 band be enough to function on the Rogers network or does the phone have to support both bands for 3G to function on the network?
only gsm 850 works on my diamond. i think its 1900 for 3g
I have an European Diamond which works on the rogers network but I get GSM/EDGE but to my horror no 3G
Looking around only on a few sites can I find any mention of what works and what doesn't the closest information I could find is from this link:

The question is will a Australian phone with the 850/2100 3G radio function on the Roger network?

I have the Australian version (850/2100 MHz) and it supports the Telstra 3G Network. Can't see why it wouldn't work on other 850/2100 MHz 3G network.
To my understanding the Canadian Rogers network is a 850/1900 network.
Does the phone need to support both bands or will one suffice?
Rogers Diamond
I had an EU/Asia Diam and I never manage to get 3G connection. Sold the phone and bought a Rogers branded diam and by default I see 3G connection all the time on the top network status. But now I'm thinking of going back to an EU/Asia version unless I can flash my Rogers branded diam with a better ROM.

T-Mobile 3G Los Angeles Oct. 23rd launch

So good news for all Diamond euro owners in LA (and other places of course)...the tmobile network supports the 2100mhz band for 3G so no need for a US version!!
http://support.t-mobile.com/knowbase/root/public/tm23715.htm#7
Sorry if this is old news, but i just realized it =)
this is great if true?
T-Mobile devices use the 1700Mhz/2100Mhz frequency band (for 3G) and I thought Europe 3G devices use 900Mhz/2100Mhz. Could U clarify further...
you said it correct...tmobile does use 1700mhz/2100mhz, and the euro diamond supports 2100mhz which should work since tmobile will be using it...i spoke to a tmobile tier 2 rep, he confirmed it as well...
That can't be right. T-Mobile AWS 3G uses the 1700 MHz band for uplink and 2100 MHz for downlink. I doubt T-Mobile US set up aside any channels in the 2100 MHz band as uplink channels.
It's kind of academic, as I can't get 3G on T-Mobile USA using a Euro Diamond in NYC, where we've had 3G deployed for a few months now. I've never heard of anyone else doing it either. Oddly, there's a "UMTS(1700)" selection in the band settings in the phone control panel, but if I try selecting that, it just jumps back to using T-Mobile's normal PCS band with EDGE for data.
If that tier 2 tech can get you onto AWS 3G with your Diamond, definitely let us all know about it, but don't get your hopes up too high.

As I understand it, if a phone says it supports 2100 it is referring to the UMTS Band 1 used in Europe which is 1920-1980MHz Uplink & 2110-2170Mhz Downlink (see UMTS Frequency Bands - Wikipedia). The 1700AWS Band (UMTS Band 4) uses 1710-1755MHz Uplink and 2110-2155MHz Downlink. So, while they do overlap some they are not identical (A Visual Guide to AWS - PhoneScoop)
So, I don't believe that a phone with 2100 EU support will work with T-Mobile 3G because it doesn't support the 'right' 2100 nor the 1700. Likewise, I don't believe that a phone with 1700 support will work for 2100 EU.
If you want to get technical the "US" Diamond won't work for 3g on T-Mobile either. The 3g band is only for 850/1900. (so i guess we're screwed either way) I'm in Salt Lake City and I don't believe Utah is slated to get 3g until 2009 at this point. I bought the diamond knowing full well that 3g was going to be a slim possibility on this phone. However, a user with a DIAM100 is claming that he's been getting 3g service on T-Mobile in NJ. He said that he'd post screenshots.. I don't know if he's done that or not. I guess all we can do is wait and see.

I have the USA sold "quad band" euro diamond distributed by htc USA. This is essentially re-flashed euro diamond hardware sold to support american networks, not the 850/1900 newest USA 3G diamond compatable with AT&T. I have looked into this issue and also talked to T-mobile and there seems to be alot of confusion regarding T-mobile's AWS USA 3G network (or maybe they have simply confused me). Here is what I have found out: Assuming they are correct, they are telling me 3G voice for T-mobile usa runs in both the 1700 AND 1900 mhz band, and therefore my euro diamond shoud be supported at 1900mhz for voice 3g support. This 1900mhz is part of the "quad band" voice radio hardware on the euro diamond. Data (AWS 3G for USA) "HSDPA" , which T-mobile has not yet released, runs in the 2100mhz bandwidth, and Data AWS "HSUPA 3g" runs in the 1700mhz bandwidth. Therefore my hardware would not support HSUPA @ 1700mhz, but would support the HSDPA @ 2100mhz. As to the idea that euro bandwidths are different than USA bandwidths, well apparently they are. For example "2100mhz" networks in europe might be actually using 2110mhz-2170mhz, whereas in the USA T-mobile's network may use 2100-2140mhz actual bands. However because these are close and still in the 2100mhz band, there should still be compatability with 2100mhz hardware radios regardless of networks varying the bandwidth slightly.
Of course this may be too optimistic, but it would be very cool if true and I am hoping for the best .

Unfortunately, they've provided you some bad information. Each frequency band/range has a pair of uplink and downlink frequencies - you can't use one without the other - you have to use both. Generally, the uplink and downlink frequencies are relatively close to each other however, the 1700 AWS band has uplink and downlink spread quite a distance apart. Uplink is in the 1700MHz range, downlink is in the 2100MHz range and both have to be used. In the US, 1700 & 2100 is essentially one band.
1900MHz (the PCS band) isn't 3G for T-Mobile (although they technically could put it there at some point.) Right now, 1900MHz for T-Mobile is EDGE voice and data. Most other carriers do have 3G on the 1900MHz band, T-Mobile just doesn't have enough spectrum available in that band.
In short: A phone that supports UMTS 2100 will not work for T-Mobile US 3G. A phone that supports AWS/UMTS 1700 will work for T-Mobile US 3G but not for European 2100 3G. (And 1900MHz PCS will give you traditional EDGE on T-Mobile US.)

My understanding is that there are people who have the TP2 activated here in the US...

so...the million dollar question...
is this hardware or software issue and eventually fixable with a rom upgrade in the future?
thanks for your input

Since the hardware is very much like the Raphael hardware I would guess that the correct hardware needs to be in place for US 3G. I hope I am wrong since I have a euro version TP2 here in the states.
yeah...its looking like hardware...

the quad bands are for phone use (i think...but i'm a noob)
att 3g is 850.1900 tibble is 1700 and telstra is 850/1900
so if i understand it right...to gain 3g on different band besides 2100 (wifi/eu) you are looking at hardware

some of it is sticking though...lol
If you purchased a quadband unlocked TP2, you will never be able to get US 3G on it unless you can get the hardware modified (which in all likelihood, you can't).
If you have a TP2 with triband then it will either support AT&T (850/1900/2100) or T-mobile USA (850/1700/2100). A phone model will probably not come out that supports both T-mobile and AT&T 3G frequencies. This would require a quadband phone with (850/1700/1900/2100). A phone with all four of those frequencies has never been made.
EDGE will work on almost all carriers, world-wide, on a quadband phone EDGE will work on most carriers world-wide on a triband phone.
850 is mostly used for EDGE (both up and downlink). 1700/1900 are commonly used for uplink 3G. 2100 is commonly used for downlink 3G.
I hope that this clears things up.
As mentioned above, internal hardware is almost identical as the Raphael.
This thread gathered the most information for 3G Raphael in the US.

So probably hardware and no go although LTxda mentioned bricking his Raphael trying to get 3G working with Elite's team and cmonex, so maybe she as something to add !? =Þ
