I was updating my SPL and upon reboot I got the lovely looping T-Mobile G1 screen, camer+power, back+power, and menu+power all work, but I really have no clue what to do as to fix it, I am new to this, no I did not make a recover because I had just upgraded to Cyanogen's backup, wiping didn't seem to work, I think it was possibly because my rom was out of date? I have JFv1.51_CRB43-US, so my question to you guys is, could going out and buying another SD card and dropping a newer rom and putting the new card in my phone fix my problem?
If you were upgrading to the 1.33.2005 SPL, you need to reflash with whatever rom you are using. The SPL effectively wipes the rom out, so you need to put it back.
Yeah, I just read that in the fastboot for noobs thing, thanks for the info!
Edit:
Do I have to reboot with the exact same rom as before the SPL update?
In case you missed the key point, using that hacked SPL has the effect of WIPING ALL YOUR DATA, so how, if the data is shot, could it possibly care that you write the same thing onto it as it had before? Answer is that it DOESN'T. Now go ahead and write whatever you like to it.
Thanks, was just wondering. :x
Gotta learn one way or another.

I've searched around a bit, and found some people with this problem, and some talk on how to fix it, but I couldn't find a definitive thread or post about what to do to fix it, could anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!
Also, one more little question, I tried to flash new SPL on my G1, wiped, etc. and when I rebooted when I tried to sign in during set up, it said something about not having data services, I was wondering if that had something to do with this force close ( which I got when I booted then as well ) or am I an idiot, and I have to re-do all the steps in the root process to get a new hard SPL?
Thanks for any help!
Edit: Also, could someone point me in the direction of a good SPL to use? Or whichever one first comes to mind when you hear SPL for the G1? Thanks

to fix the FC you could try wiping the regular stuff and if it still doesnt work wipe your ext* partition ... also for the SPLs use either HardSPL or the 'Danger' SPL ... be extremely careful with the Danger SPL as there are certain prerequisites so you don't get bricked
Thanks for the reply, what are the prerequisites for the danger SPL, and is it any better than the hard SPL?
Edit: Wiped everything, same force close on startup, but this time it logged in/setup just fine
Also; looking into haykuru's SPL ( For that fancy lookin' jestur blur ROM ), and from the things I'm reading it's very risky ( I have the 26I radio and what not ) is there any forum that has a nice tutorial? Such as the one for rooting? If so, a link would be greatly appreciated, I've been fishing around for about an hour, best I can come up with is what I think is haykuru's SPL, but I really don't even know, haha, sorry I'm being such a nuisance
I have the same fc problem and have done the same wipe so if anyone else can help us please do
I pretty much fixed it, unfortunately I moved from cyanogen to a Hero ROM, after flashing haykuro's SPL, wiping, and re-doing my entire SD card, no force closes, and a nice hero running at full speed.
For you steve, just try re-doing your ext partiton on your SD card, wiping, and re-flashing cyanogens mod, and that pretty much worked for me the first time.
Hope I helped someone
Nice one cheers mate I will give it a try. Is the hero better than cyan then?
Right so I have tried everything from wipe ext 2, to formatting memory card and reinstalling cyan, I believe I have tried everything please help!!!!!
Hello, it's been a while since I've stepped into XDA, busy with school and all
So I recently broke my G1, and thanks to insurance, I had it replaced. I quickly went to root it and apply Haykuro's Danger SPL as I did last time to my older G1. However, something happened. I don't recall what, but I remember it not being pretty.
I haven't had MMS since. Come to think of it, I don't think I did even on my last G1. Either way, I think it's due to how the Danger SPL flashed onto my phone. I want to know how I can downgrade to one that's a little more "stable" and get a better radio to see if it's that that's causing the problems. What do you guys think?
There's nothing unstable about the danger spl and it couldn't cause a problem like this. The 26i radio is also the most current and 'best' for the g1, so no point changing. It's more likely a phone configuration or network issue.. you'd be better off speaking to your provider and making sure your settings are right.
Are your MMS settings proper?

I've already spoken to T-Mobile on several occassions. They've done everything from remote access the phone to resetting the network as a whole in my area...nothing. I'm theorizing that it's the SPL because it didn't install pretty and I think perhaps it took MMS down with it.

I don't think that's possible. Once the spl boots the kernel, It doesn't have any further role to play.. I can't imagine any scenario in which it could affect high-level functionality like that. If it'd somehow messed up your internal partitioning, I doubt you could've flashed a rom in the first place, so I really don't think the spl is to blame.
Anyway.. if you want to try it, you can just flash the engineering spl or hardspl through recovery, you don't have to do anything special that way round. Be aware its going to wipe your rom out though so have a copy on the sd ready to flash.

You could try it but it sounds like a software config issue to me.. a corrupt radio would cause a lot more problems than failing mms. just make sure you use haykuro's 26i radio if that's the spl you're using.
You can try reflashing the radio as goldenamrz said...for some unknown reason, the radio seems to be affected after many flashes (ive personally never had any problems but i know it happens)
I'm curious what the result of this was. It sounds to me like this is a good way to brick a phone; I didn't think you could revert to a previous SPL after flashing the DangerSPL. Flashing radios willie nilly seems like that could also spell heartache.
From DangerSPL to HardSPL
I just reverted from DangerSPL to HardSPL with no fuss. Placed the HardSPL as update.zip in the sdcard, run the update, restart.
When it rebooted, i had the HardSPL and my rom almost intact. When you go from Hard to Danger, you need to add the rom again, as the installation does a wipe too. But from Danger to Hard it doesn't. So the phone booted straight away.
However, it had some issues, like lost wifi stored info and the home and call keys were unresponsive. So i used nano and a backup and i was up and running at no time.
The issue i had with receiving but not sending MMS was not solved by reverting to HardSPL. Settings are correct, tried with CyanogenMod and AOSP2.4 With Camera, nothing.. unresolved. I'll wait for next Cyanogen release and if nothing, i'll wipe and reinstall cyanogen from scratch..
edit. problem solved: type "default" at the apn type for DATA (not mms). Apparently, it is needed for the mms to ignore that apn and go for the one that has "mms" as an apn type
Why hello there.
Thought I'd start with a nice little greeting, if you're reading this hopefully you're looking forward to a nice little task. My G1 is entered paper-weight mode rather than my fast boot setting and it's starting to get rather redundant so this is my last resort. There's the premises of my problem here's a little more detailed one for ya.
So I have a launch G1 with Cyanogen's latest 4.2.4 rom installed with the latest radio & any of the other necessary things flashes, etc. I'm honestly pretty good with these kinds of things through actual knowledge from here for just trial and error but this is something I haven't had to deal with for a LONG time. The infernal pause screen of G1 death. It won't leave the "T-Mobile G1" boot image after being flashed / wiped / all around cleaned up. I'm curious if it may just be the G1 or maybe something else caused a corrupted image for some odd reason.
Prior to getting this to happen, my keyboard wouldn't type correctly. The space bar would result in some random key being pressed and in essence, my phone typing by itself. So either my phone's possessed or.... something far worse. If you happen to know what exactly that is, please help me out! I'm open to suggestions, I've tried other builds and I'm about to just grab some old roms and see if maybe this works. If you have tips or need to know any more information please, just ask.
Thanks! Adderall will make this much easier I just need some ideas
-chatty chatt mic-chat chat.
Boom.
The fact that your keyboard was messing up is ominous. Are fastboot and recovery working ok? Can you post a startup log?
I would flash the HardSPL
the spl monitor the control input (afaik because people w/ qwertz keyboards said flashing special spl's converted them to qwerty)
before you mess with that though, make sure you followed the install directions for 4.2.4
you dont just flash it as an update.zip if your switching to cyan for the first time.
you need to flash the HTC recovery image first, then flash cyan on top of that
no see i've been around here since the beginning of the G1 mods and such I know what to do with everything it just started going wild. I'll try flashing the hardSPL and see what happens but this is just odd. I'm trying one more time to flash a new rom on my phone with a freshly formatted sd card then we'll see what happens
Hi all,
I’m in desperate need of some of your wealth of experience, i have managed to root and flash my g1 with - rc9 JFv1.51_CRB43-EU.zip (Jesus freke), and recovery-RA-dream-v1.6.2.img recovery image!. Now i want to update to a newer rom!
Now for the problem, the recovery program allows me to flash many of the rom's available but none of them work after the flash completes it just loads the g1 screen and stops there i have left it on that screen for about 10 min’s and nothing at all happens, but then it will allow me to flash back to rc9 JFv1.51_CRB43-EU.zip absolutely fine no issues every time?. Do i need to install anything else before updating to Open Eclare 2.1.1 or SuperD1103-blk.? I’m in the UK with a UK g1 mobile if that makes a difference?

Just use the top three wipes available in Anon's recovery menu: Wipe System/Data (1st), Davilk Cache (2nd), Ext Partition (3rd). If you haven't partitioned your SD card into FAT32, Ext2, 3, or 4 and Linux-Swap, do so now with the Recovery menu. You must backup your fat32 first, because a total repartition will totally blank your data. Good luck!

Make sure you partition your sd card and then try like the above said....or maybe try flashing death spl.

This is YOUR FAULT for NOT READING!!!!
You installed an SPL meant for an HTC MAGIC onto your HTC DREAM. It *CAN* be made to work, HOWEVER, you failed to read and understand what is required to actually do it safely.
SPECIFICALLY, you are stuck in boot mode 3 -- boot to recovery, and because you changed the SPL, your recovery partition is UNABLE TO BOOT.
You are BRICKED, and the only way out is to use a hardware interface called "JTAG", which requires you to disassemble the phone.
SPECIFICALLY:
You missed the part of that thread that says "MOD EDIT PLEASE READ THIS THREAD FOR UP TO DATE INFORMATION".
I have no sympathy for you. That instruction is in big purple letters.
hi thanks for your info, do you know anyone or anywhere i can get my phone jtagged?
How could you mess it up with step by step instructions....lol...I am being dead serious....it doesn't get more clear than this.
IMPORTANT: Before going any further make sure that you have PVT board. You can do this by rebooting your phone and holding the camera button. The first line should say "PVT" if you see "DVT" then DO NOT flash this because odds are you will get a brick but If it says "PVT" then you are good to go.
First you are going to need to download the latest radio and the SPL. both can be found here http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/ There is also a new radio that is compatible that can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640535
Prior to starting the installation process please make sure that your battery has a good charge. Also DO NOT pull your battery out at anytime during the installation process. I know it seems like common sense but I read a thread where someone had pulled their battery in the middle of the installation process and they ended up with a brick.
Now that all that's out of the way lets get started!
1. Copy "ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip" or "G1-radio-2_22_23_02.zip" and "spl-signed.zip" onto the root of your SD card.
2. Reboot into recovery. I suggest using the RA-dream recovery you can download it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
3. Wipe your phone "factory data reset" (this step isnt really necessary since your phone is wiped after flashing the SPL but I always like to wipe before flashing anything)
DO NOT SKIP THIS NEXT STEP OR YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE
You must have the latest radio "2_22_19_26I" or "2_22_23_02" to flash this SPL if you already have the latest radio you should not have to flash it again but it will not hurt if you do flash it again. When in doubt flash it anyway.
4. Flash the Radio "ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip" or "G1-radio-2_22_23_02.zip" it will install and then it will ask you to reboot to finish the installation, so reboot, it will then finish installing and then reboot back into recovery.
5. Flash the SPL "spl-signed.zip" it will install and then ask you to reboot to finish the installation, so reboot, it will then finish installing and reboot into recovery so you can flash your ROM

Did you follow those steps when flashing the SPL? Did you even flash the radio before flashing the SPL?
It sounds like you have no idea what you did to your phone which is never a good sign (and usually means you shouldn't even be flashing custom radios/spl's/roms)

Sigh....I would go buy another phone off Craigslist or something similar.
Next time...please read before flashing....Although I'm sure you will after the last mishap.
the only way to fix your phone is to buy a doner phone with a broken screen or something cheap off of ebay
there is NO KNOWN WAY to fix it without a doner (the jtag method isnt do-able yet)
I know here in town...there are so many G1's up for sale around the $150 mark in really really nice condition.
That's where I'd be looking if I bricked my G1. Well...I'd be replacing it with a HD2 probably...lol

Please READ. You are from the UK so your English isn't bad. You have no excuse for not following instructions.
Ways to fix your phone:
1) motherboard replacement
2) JTAG (experts are not anywhere near you though)
3) buy a new phone

Hi everyone really sorry for opening a new thread for a G1 brick.
My G1 has stuck at the T-Mobile screen and on pressing Camera+Power i cant get into fastboot to restore using the .nbh file.
I am not able to get into recovery using power+home key also.
There has to be a way to get my dream back....
please please please help
JTAG or go for a replacement. I'm guessing it's a DangerSPL brick, right?
Danger SPL
Yes dude....
i have done this so many time.....
this time i forgot to update the radio first and this is stuck....
Someone should have a solution for this....
I read many thread which say use it as a paperweight...
I am not loosing hope....

Maybe you should try to keep current on developments.
There is NOT A SINGLE REASON to use the deathspl.
As for your "poll"... what do you expect to learn from something like this? Do you realize that any numbers you get will be completely MEANINGLESS?

Sure there is as its one if the few full engineering spls. And I don't think your latest development will ever be quite as user friendly (however some more configuration it will be very close)
The real user friendly fix/patch for 1.33.2005 (those that know what they are doing can decide if any benifit of the spl exists) is an assertion statement in the recovery script to check the radio version is not one of the two common 1.x ones.
(the evil patch is to make the assertion somehow also autoinstall the lattest Rogers e911 patched rom if the user has the 1.x radio. Because atm the rogers rom appears to be very safe from the user messing up the boot chain.. actually we may need to "perfect" the spl a bit more I think it will let us erase hboot)
I am still a newb to the android scene - and do believe I as well made the same mistake - and have bricked my G1.
If eveything I've read is accurate, I can purchase a donor phone - broken screen, or other issues - so long as the mother board is still good.
Swap out the new mother board for the bricked one, and have a working phone again - right ?
Have an opportunity on a donor phone - have no issues pulling phones apart, and putting them back together
But just want to make sure I understand the basics
Thanks in advance for any replies
Motherboard only option ?
Is replacing the motherboard the only option left ?
I am not sure i would be able to do that
Worst day of my life i screwed up big time
Any help is appreciated.

There is no tool to get it back except by the options listed above. If you are not going to switch the mobos in the G1 then you won't be able to do the other option either. There is no software that can bring your G1 back after a deathspl.

Mine is also due to radio update dude, before flashing spl the radio has to be flashed i and forgot to do that.
Will try out your suggestion, just hoping that it work and my g1 is back to life.
Ne ways appreciate your suggestion.
Please let me know if you were able to get into recovery mode prior to putting the files on the sd card.
And if you could tell me the list of files (if u had nething other then the nand update) which you put on the sd card, i can replicate the exact process.
Thanks,
Chinmay

Is there any hope to get the G1 back to life from the Death SPL Brick ?
You should read instructions carefully man. Its not that hard. You should always verify that you have a compatible radio before flashing DangerSPL.
There is a method to recover your device and it involves a lot of time and patience. Google "JTAG".
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
"JTAG".
me too, my G1 Bricked (Not able to fastboot). but i wanna know if the JTAG method work 100%.please.
