Anyone try this application lately, apparently it let you send unlimited amount of SMS to ppl. Not sure how it work or does it? If this work is going to be a steal.
That kind of thing will only work in some areas. The way it works is that it uses a web-sms interface and therefore depends on the sms-provider having access to the target's sms web interface, so its not really free, it uses your data. Probably ad-supported as well.
Why use sms though? Kinda obsolete. If you want to send a message to someone, send them an EMAIL -- size is unlimited, it uses ONLY data, and there are no ads.

Does anyone know if the programs in the AT&T Tilt Instant Messaging use SMS? I have no text plan, so I would hat to use it then get a big bill.
do u bother to search? yes it uses txt.
Yes, AT&T took off WindowsLive with their free messenger that uses your unlimited data service and put on there IM client that uses sms so that you have to still pay them for every message sent.
great thanks for letting me know.

Those SOBs!
Well, we'll just have to install 3rd party IM apps!!!!...
Hi, I have searched google and these forums for answers to my questions but could not get a definite answer or solution to my questions.
My first question: What is a good program for internet messaging such as AIM and MSN that uses only text messages rather than data usage? I am not on a data plan but do have unlimited text messages...I would be okay if it used WIFI too....
Second question: I have heard that MMS uses data connection. I have my data disabled but would like to have the option possibly available to me. Is it possible to send/recieve MMS w/o the use of a data plan? Perhaps wifi if possible? or a program that allows the sending of MMS w/o data interference?
Thanks in advance for any help!
it uses data.....i have the unlimited text messaging plan that includes IM's and MMS....its the family plan for 29.99 i believe
yea, I have that plan too, it says mms is included, but you dont think it will use data?
also, no IM clients that are supported purely over SMS?
You can try the OZ Instant Messaging client. From reports it sends over SMS. It has been reported it does use a small amount of data when it signs you in or out of the service but after that its all SMS based.

you will not get charged for the data when sending MMS....it will come up as data on your bill but will not get charged for it..so send as many MMS as you want because thats what the plan is for...
as for instant messenger...get the OZ isntant messenger..it comes with the shipped rom (or you can download it like the guy that posted above) and it will use data to log in but you will not get charged for it..and each IM counts as SMS. As long as you have an instant messenger that comes with the original ROM it will count as SMS and will not get charged for any data transfers

any other known programs to work soloy on SMS and if needed, wifi?
Is there any app out there that lets you send free sms?
google voice
any others?
SMS is a feature of your cell provider, not the phone, so there is no magical free SMS app.
Google Voice routes incoming text via their own servers, as opposed to your provider's. It then has the option to either forward it to your phone as an actual SMS (in which case you will incur the usual charges) or via the data connection (GPRS/EDGE/3G), in which case it will be "free" since it bypasses providers' networks. However, forwarding is the default behavior unless you turn it off in your account settings at http://voice.google.com.
did you search in the market. i think there may be one ( i know there was one a while back) but how reliable it is, i cannot tell you (unlimited sms)
you could just use aim to send sms for free. as long as you have a data plan.
i know for a fact that there are free sms apps out there. search the market.
Or quit being cheap and get the data plan with unlimited texts.
This is a good question. It's either you being ripped off by the big companies or you being considered "cheap". If you have a data plan (which I'm guessing you do if you have a G1), you could just use email to text people's numbers. Most popular carriers let people receive texts from email, so if my number was (555)555-5555, you can email to [email protected] for verizon, [email protected] for AT&T, [email protected] for T-Mobile, and a few others listed here and at other places on the Internet.
To read more about the ongoing ripoff that is what we know as SMS, read below:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/28/business/28digi.html?_r=3
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/05/14/txts_r_v_pricey/
You can also find more info on it by Googling "sms ripoff".
if you use google voice then the first time you text someone your phone will ask you to use messaging or google voice, choose google voice and check the box to make it default. From that point on you will text like normal but everything will go out via google voice. The only downfall is that people have to send texts to your google voice number instead of your phone number and google voice's app sometimes has a couple minute delay on receiving the sms.

No! I'm sick of bending over to the carriers.
<rant mode>
I refuse to pay their exuberant prices for services that cost them NOTHING. I already pay for data (btw, the US data plans are one of the most expensive in the world), so how is it that different from text? I understand charging extra for MMS since it puts extra load on the network, but friggin' TEXT?!? Come on. The only reason there hasn't been a major public outrage about this ridiculous scam is because the silent majority of texters are teenagers whose phone bills are paid by mommies and daddies.
</rant mode>
are there any third party free sms apps?
i know google blocks free sms apps from the market
anyone know if any exist?
Wait, what? Google doesn't block free SMS apps at all. You must be thinking of Apple or something.
Look at ChompSMS (my personal favorite) or HandCentSMS
I don't think its possible. To use SMS you either need a data connection or an actual SMS plan. If you don't have either. How are you going to get the SMS out? If its only on WiFi, you can use meebo or aim and just text their cell number. But its not possible to get SMS for free using cellular signal.

some networks/contracts have unlimited data plans but limit the calls/texts that you can use, im guessing he is after an app which will automatically use a site which provides free texts.
then again, if he wants that there is the option of going to the site through the browser
just get google voice and call it a day give your GV num to people and have them use that as your primary num.
GV app has txt msg in there and its all over data. so technically free (as long as you have an unlimited plan.
So my question is... can I text over wifi?
Here are the details: In two of my college classes, I get no signal, but have great wifi access. I want to be able to use something to text over wifi while in those classes. I just installed google voice after a quick google search... but it seems like you have to change this to be a permanent default messaging app (which I havent even tried to do). Most posts Ive run across have been people that want to text for free, but I have unlimited so thats not an issue. I really like handcent, so is there a way to text over wifi or an app just for those two classes or while Im at school or something without having to change the default messaging app 2x a day?
Thanks in advance for responses =]
You can't send SMS messages over a Wi-Fi connection with your default messaging app, so that's out of the question. You can use GV, but it you don't need to make it your default messaging app to send or receive anything. If you bring your computer to class, you could use Gmail, the Google Voice website(Which would be faster than your phone), AIM, or you could just not text anyone in those couple of classes and pay attention. In fact, that's what I recommend.
Pingchat is free, awesome and multiplatform (android, blackberry, iphone). Your friends also need a smartphone of course.

Okay MOM haha. Ill see If I can use GV for just a temporary fix... and Id rather not bring my laptop to school, its an inconvenience. My phone fits in my pocket. My classes are really easy and sometimes my text message conversations are much more interesting.

Ill try that out, I dont really like the fact that all my friends have to have it installed, but thats definitely a start!! thank you for the advice
I actually use GV as my primary form of SMS (I opt out of SMS on my plan) for unlimited SMS and free SMS to Canada.
If you do go that route, I recommend using this older version:

The newer version has an annoying lag to it.

Thats seems okay, the only problem with that is that I would have to ask all of my friends to install that, and not all of them have phones that can install apps. So that is a good idea, but I dont think it would work.
I have a small SMS plan with ATT. I downloaded the GV app and leave it running. I see no lag for what I use it for.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
So I tried google voice and I can still make outgoing text messages without having it be my default app. So I think this still wins for people in my situation. I had a heck of a time getting a google number though, I ended up just doing it through my gmail and it was much easier.
Thanks guys for all the helpful advice!!
