for the love of gawd, anyone, suggest a podcatcher that works!!!
glisten is trash, so is mediafly, should i pay for dogcatcher?
any other options? as someone said somewhere "why can't anyone get podcasts right on android?!"
if you find one, let me know. Listen is the best I've found right now but it's still pretty lousy. Mediafly used to be absolutely flawless, but that's been months and now it's just terrible. I've resorted to downloading them in Mediafly and then playing them in in a different program.
I havent found a good one either, the one I listen to you have to login, and it seems none support that.
It depends on what you want and how you want it to work. Some people prefer streaming. Others want it cached for listening later on. Some want to enter their favorite podcasts and be done with it. Others want a good database of podcasts with search facility.
I only listen to podcasts on my 3.5hr commute to work each Sunday afternoon, as I work out of state for most of the week. I listen to the same podcasts every week. For me, "Carcast" is ideal. It doesn't search for podcasts, only downloading what you set it up with. It also allows me to manually download my podcasts every Sunday morning for listening on the road.
I like the search that "listen" uses, but don't care for its integration with google reader. I like my newsfeeds to be separate from podcasts because I treat both differently.
If you just want streaming and a neat interface, try "Stitcher." It doesn't do what I want since it's streaming-only, but it looks good.
So yeah, it depends on how you listen to podcasts. I haven't found a single podcast client that could please everybody yet.
that's swell, i don't care about searching either and no way i'm giving them access to my google account, i know my podcasts and i just want a timely download and steady streaming with downloading along (like glisten)
i want it to remember where i stopped last time i listened and be able to control what stays in the list and what doesn't (unlike mediafly)
that's it!
oh and proper playback in the background, please

CarCast sounds like it would work for you, though its interface isn't as great as the others.

The really sad thing about Mediafly is that it USED to be sheer perfection. I could listen to a podcast, either downloaded or streamed, it would pick right back up right where I left off every single time no problem and it would keep my downloaded podcasts as long as I needed them. Then suddenly one day they changed something and it won't remember its spot and it deletes podcasts that I haven't even listened to even though I've told it to keep them all until I manually delete them. I think I'm going to dig around in some of my old APKs and see if I can find one of the first versions of it...
My advice is to just use a desktop podcatcher that will sync. Songbird is a good one, and Double Twist now does it. That way it'll look like a regular music file and you can just use any old music player app on the phone.
dPod
Use to go for beyond, was great, paid for, and now ... it sucks. Not capable to synchronize properly with reader anymore.
Just found a new option that look good, work well, is not perfect but free. dPod.
Give it a go, it's not bad at all

DoggCatcher supports authentication and is generally the best one out there in my opinion. I've used it since pretty much day one and it just keeps getting better and better. The dev is also very responsive and implements everything you ask as long as it's reasonable.
wanted to let you guys know that after last two back-to-back updates mediafly has been working quite good, i.e. it doesnt die when you switch to another app, episodes are pushed almost as soon as they become available and it even sometimes (rarely) remembers where your playback stopped last time, oh and i kinda dig their logo ...
Mediafly was updated today...looks like they might have fixed the resume problems...fingers crossed.
Release date: Friday, 2 April 2010
* Improved error handling on playback, including adding 'ding' messages.
* Resume playback now works
* Pausing with wired/bluetooth controls updates UI
* Streaming/playing video no longer creates entry in Download Manager
* Fewer Activity Not Responding messages on loading channels
I apologize for digging up this old(ish) thread, but I recently spent several days trying out as many different podcast apps as I could and wanted to share my findings. As background, probably 95% of my audio listening is to podcasts in my car, and maybe an occasional CD or Pandora stream. I have around a dozen that I listen to every week and a couple of these are daily shows. I have tried to use Mediafly in the past, since I paid for it, but found it increasingly more aggravating, even after the most recent update.
So here's my findings:
Useless: MyPod, Mediafly, Listen and Carcast
Potential: PodKast, BeyondPod and ACast
and the winner by a huge margin: DoggCatcher
It pretty much does everything I need. I knew after just using it for a day that I was not going to get a refund for it, even though it's most expensive app I've bought to date. The interface is a bit "busy" but once you get the hang of it, it really does make listening to multiple feeds very simple and worry-free. The only real downsides that I've found are that I don't think it streams over 3G (although it will over wifi), but that's not a huge deal, since it autosyncs without any kind of interaction on my part just fine and it's not cheap, but the dev seems to keep of top of things.
Ive tried just about all of the apps and I prefer beyondpod.
hi can someone send me the us version of podkast ?
i can't find it here in switzerland on the market.
[email protected]
guys, i'm back to glisten. it works almost flawlesly. couple hickups with app shutting down on loss of network but besides that all is good. and it's google, you know you can't say no.
I have DoggCatcher and I love it. It works better than anything I've tried and I never had any problems with any of my feeds not downloading. 5 Stars.
hello there, i just bought an X1 and was trying to find the best mp3 player. the ones i found on the phone were very slow. i have an 8 gb card with 1400 songs on it.
i need a player that doesn't have a delay between changing the songs and also a search function.
i found winamp for WM; i runs smoothly but i couldn't find the jump button.
any ideas ?
there are plenty...pocket player, imulator, s2p, lcg jukebox...
imo, pocket player is better choice, but it is not free
I also recommend Pocket Player by Conduits. Not free but the best player I have seen so far.
thanks man, i found pocket player, it's nice, but it's so slow . i'm having so many problems with this thingy, i can't even find the gps menu in settings
I dont consider Pocket Player slow. Its not lightning fast, ok. But slow?
Concerning gps setting: You will find them under settings\system\external gps
Another vote for Conduits Pocket Player. Not slow at all, slides and performs as expected. I had been a satisfied user for many years and had it running on all of my WM devices with no issues, and we are talking a far less spec-ed ones than Xperia. The best part for me is that it sends music over the bluetooth to a mono headset and with tweaks can be set up as a default media player for Voice Command, which means it gets controlled through bluetooth as well. Can't beat that.

With Pocket Player you can set up the interval between songs, even fading of one song into another.

I wonder if slowness is caused by your card read rates...
yeah, my card is probably slow, but this doesn't change the fact that pocket player has a not so nice search function. after you find the desired track, it replaces the playlist and you have to go back each and every time.
have you tried that winamp version for WM ? if i could find the "jump" button. it really looks like winamp and it's veeeery fast.
ps: i'm using the same micro sd on an n95 and it works like a charm, i'll try and update the x1 to 6.5; if i'm not satisfied with the results, i'll swap it for an n97.
It's a question of configuration. In advanced settings you can choose whether to generally replace the current playlist or to enqueue an opened file. What's more it is important to choose the correct method. If you want to replace the current playlist you choose open\open file but if you'd like to enqueue you have to use open\add file. It's the same in the library. When you press on an album, artist or track in the list a menu pops up and you can choose between play (replaces current playlist) or enqueue. In the library there are settings too. There you can once again choose between different ways the program interprets gestures/ actions. So all in all what you describe is a mere question of configuration and using the correct method
i've given up. i tried saving a playlist and it freezed my phone (twice). i don't care anymore.
now...this is WINDOWS mobile, right? on my p990 i had an emulator for old nintendo games (mortal kombat, street fighter etc); is there such thing?
what other games do you know? i saw a video, someone was playing tony hawk, i'm looking for something similar with good graphics and interesting gameplay, perhaps a football game, pool, bowling...
Perhaps... the problem is with your device.... I can't say I ever had any problems of any kind running Pocket Player, saving playlists, selecting songs, scrolling through lists etc, and I used it on quite a few WM devices so far. Can't even say the performance was ever affected by the ROM or specifications. It runs equally well on 200Mhz devices and 620Mhz devices, with 64Mb RAM and 256Mb. It even runs perfectly well on LG KS20 and that little bugger has many problems. I have it on my Xperia, needless to say.
FYI: I realise that you asked for a new media player, but I thought it was worth mentioning that both the X1s built-in meda players have a highly elegant quick search as you type feature.... just start typing..

if you have more than 1 song that starts with "mar" for example, it will only show you the first one
what's so elegant if it doesn't satisfy my needs? btw, where's the equalizer on these so sweet and neat "media" players? even with the players that have equalizer, the sound sucks in my car/headsets comparing to nokia.
i'm sorry to say this, i love ericsson, but i regret buying xperia.
Look it is clearly visible that you don't now how to use Pocket Player. You say: "This does not work, that is not possible". But everything you mentioned so far is possible with Pocket Player as long as you know how to use it.
Concerning your problem with playlists I cant confirm that the Xperia crashes when saving a playlist. Have you tried saving in another format?
If you don't like Pocket Player there are other solutions. Pocket Music by Pocketmind for example or Mortplayer. Both come with an equaliser but for me Pocket Player is by far the best program available.
AS for games you can get warcraft 2 and starcraft and heaps of other games.
hey, i have the best solution: throw away this crap and buy the goddamn ugly n97,
this morning i was trying to send an sms to a bunch of my friends and, surprise, i can't mark recipients, i have to select them 1 by 1. YEAH XPERIA ALL THE WAAAY
Look I found in 5 minutes by using the search function what you say is not possible.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354164
Search also for the keyword "power sms" as this is another solution. Maybe there is even more software available here at XDA. Generally everything is possible with Windows Mobile because there is software for almost any function you can imagine. So please either start using your brain or stop annoying us with your false statements. I don't care if you believe Xperia X1 is crap and N97 is better but stop claiming things that are just plain wrong only because you are to lazy to look for a solution yourself.
for me nitrogen is the best mp3 player for winmo.
so i have to install a third party software to send a lousy sms? if i wanna send a message to 1 guy, i use it's default app and if i wanna send one to many, the other one. i can't believe this. yes, i'm slothful, that's why i bought a smartphone
oh, btw, sometimes, it doesn't show the number that's callin' me so i have to restart it...
i have nothing against xperia or WM, i'm just being objective here, but imagine if i would have had to pay for all these extra applications? imagine if i didn't know my way around technology. i would want my SMAAARTPHONE to do everything by default; and by everything, i mean the basics.
you guys know better than me that many 3rd party apps are ****ed up and buggy and laggy, and trust me, i had more than 10 symbian phones, i know what i'm talking about. so don't you dare jump on me with "use your brain, false statements". maybe i do have a cheap micro sd, but why does the old n95 work so smooth with it a?
altae, i dare you to show me a video of you using pocket player. i want you to load a playlist with at least a couple of hundred songs, i want you to have there songs that have the same title such as come(ing) undone by placebo, korn and robbie williams. search for "undone", let me see how it shows you all 3 songs and after you select one, the playlist goes on just like "good ol' winamp". if you can do that and i can't, i swear i'll hit myself as hard as i can with the x1 in the head, in my nuts or wherever you want me to.
Can anyone recommend an audio player that is better than the SE one?
Happy to pay if it's worth it.
The one thing I do like on the X2 is it's ability to store a bunch of my CDs so I can play them.
I just wish the media player was a bit better:
- bigger pic of the CD cover would be nice
- more info about the CD (e.g. year released)
- better info on tracks (if the track is from a various artists CD let me see which artist the track is by)
That's all I can think of right now.
Thanks.
winamp for ppc perhaps
i think its called WinamPAQ

Nitrogen is a freeware player which isn't bad & has an EQ & is skinable. Now, Pocket Player is (IMHO) the absolute BEST player on Windows Mobile. It has an EQ & ability to do 'full-screen' Album covers. The only caveat: they are NOT on Windows Marketplace, and if you have to reset the phone & reinstall, you're going to have to beg them for another key. (I *HATE* that kind of crap, and I've gotten to the point where I go out of my way to AVOID anything that's not on Marketplace. Also, Marketplace lets you download on up to 5 devices, ...so for me: I don't have to re-buy all the stuff I bought on the X1 for my X2.)
Please AVOID at all costs the Kinoma (payware) player. Although it looks like you're getting a great bargain, it has a default setting to always "search the entire phone" for new content. And, even if you turn that off, every now-and-then it loses its cookies and forces you to unexpectedly re-catalog the entire phone (usually, when you MOST want to 'just listen to music').
PocketMusic is another freeware player, that supposedly supports WinAmp skins, and has an EQ. I found this one really flaky with a CLUNKY interface that was well-bested by Nitrogen.
...Now, after all was said-and-done, I'm back to using plain-vanilla Windows Media Player. This is for a number of reasons:
1) It's skinable, too. (Look for the toadlife_Sense25_WMP_Skin_signed.cab; it's HTC-like, but really clean)
2) It is fast at cataloging tunes, and I don't know how it does it, but doesn't take a gb or two to do it (Kinoma; I'm *****ing at you!), and it's completely at your discretion when you want to update it.
3) Album-size, while not as fancy as I'd like, is not bad.
4) Using the default X2 Saturn skin (MR2 firmware), WMP's library selection doesn't look bad (although it doesn't show album art like PocketPlayer or some others), and is fairly finger-able.
5) BOTTOM LINE: I noticed that (although it doesn't have a built-in EQ), the sound quality is actually noticeably better than Nitrogen & PocketMusic provided. It seems as if WMP engages some sort of noise-canceling when actual signal is produced. You can hear it kick-in when you hit play. And, this is not to say that dynamic range is reduced. I think it sounds better in-ear than on X1, in general, even though I was able to run the HTC EQ in the background on X1 (not compatible with X1, due to the hardware not being HTC).
For me, Slideview entirely crashes after a few mins anytime I run it. I have a 16gb card with LOTS of pictures, games, emus & music. Unfortunately, Slideview is very persistent and you can't hack the registry to limit what folders it looks in (it just HAS to look everywhere). There seems to be some files (possibly emus) that it thinks are Videos (but are not) and when it gets to refreshing them, craps out.
But, WMP works well for me. --If you can't live with it, go for PocketPlayer. I may go back to it someday, myself... but I want to be absolutely sure I won't do a full-phone-refresh someday. I've had the X2 for a little over a month, and am pretty well-settled, but ...there were a lot things I tried/uninstalled, etc. which have probably bloated my registry (I might have to break down and reload one day).
Hi Everyone,
My HD7 arrived today and I have started to set it up etc. (I am in the UK)
Any questions you want to know fire them at me.
I am coming from a Galaxy S so it does seem a tad limited for now until the apps catch up.
So far I have noticed the following oddities.
OS based Issues MS need to fix
Video player does not play audio via A2DP. (music does)
Bluetooth settings lack any options for type (Headset/Stereo) settings (no real issue)
Mobile IE does not render Toodledo/slim well so not sure about other sites.
Zune software - Podcast section does not appear in market in UK have to add rss feeds manually to the app.
No custom ringtones/other sound settings
No option to connect to WIFI with hidden SSID
Only syncs main calendar from any source not any additionals.
Media HUB only remembers the location of the last video in the play list that is "paused" once you move to other items of music or other videos it forgets the place.
Other issues not OS related. (all will be fixed over time with good apps)
Lack of apps is a real issue on day one. This should change.
No TODO app with push notifications available! big issue for me.
YouTube App just loads the m.youtube.com so its really just a player engine once you pick a video from the site.
Videos get converted on the fly during sync which makes this a slow process. Should kick off the conversion as soon as you say sync to phone.
Other than these points the phone itself is really nice and fast, no lag at all.
Takes some getting used to but I am trying hard to make it all work.
Russ
No connection to hidden SSID? That sucks!
Can you categorise imported/synched videos into any album you want and rename the albums? So I could have say one video album labelled FAMILY, one labelled, FUNNY, one labelled MOVIES etc
Thanks for the input. What's your opinion of the screen coming from samoled? How is the ringer volume compared to the Samsung?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I got mine today, just sold my Galaxy S, still have my iPhone 4.
Screen is almost as good as iPhone, nothing like Super AMOLED sadly.
Biggest issue for me is speakers are terrible.
Kev
Oh okay thanks for the info. I had an ip4 so if its close to that I am cool. I hate to hear the speakers suck. That's big issue for me. Especially since I can't add my loud ringers I usually add if speakers suck on the phones I get

I thought the HTCs had Dolby Surround or whats it called How can they be worse than the competitors?
I may be mistaken but Dolby Sound and SRS only work when headphones are plugged in. Maybe someone can confim.
i Can confirm that both SRS and Dolby mobile work through headphones and through the speakers, when putting on Dolby does make it sound slightly louder and clearer for me!!
That's great to hear

As far as I can make out on my Zune software I can not group videos into playlists so there does not seem to be an easy way to get it to auto sync unless you pick the ALL option.
Still messing with it though.

Agreed, the screen is nowhere as good as the Galaxy but if you have never had a Super Amoled then I dont think you will be disappointed.
Speaker volume is very low compared to my Galaxy also. I thought the grills at top and bottom were speakers but they are just for show.
The speaker is next to the camera on the back.

This is not true, without the Youtube app you can't play Youtube Videos from the website. The App contains necessary Code/Drivers which allow you to play Youtube videos whethere going through the App/Link or from IE.
Also the Front Mounted Speakers are still being questioned. HTC seemed to have advertised the phone to Reviewers/Critics as having "Front Mounted Stereo Speakers" however atm they are either not used (software update required from M$) or HTC were lying. I'd like to hope it's teh first one but you never know
The Screen on mine is brilliant when the brightness is set to High. When on Auto it seems to keep screen brightness on Medium which is a bit rubbish and doesn't show it off very well. Get it on High and you'll notice the difference. It's (very) hardly noticable from the HTC Desire's when they're side by side, but the fact it's massive far outways that.
Thats was my point about it being just a player engine (codecs etc). I was comparing what I know from Android for a youtube app and was suprised it was not a full in app experience.
But being able to play the videos at all is a big plus.
Agree on the screen, set on HIGH it looks very nice and anyone will be happy with it but I am not sure what impact the battery is going to take. Side by side with a galaxy S though you do see the difference but if you never had a super Amoled then you wont care at all.
What is a score with Low - Med - High anyway, wheres the slider for brightness. Seems like a miss that should have been easy.
Russ
Ah apologies I misread you on the YouTube thing. I've left my screen brightness on high for a few days now and I must say I haven't even noticed a difference in battery life, although tbh my battery life is terrible anyway. Why HTC chose a 1200 instead of a 1500 is beyond me.
Waiting on my new HTC HD7 arriving this afteroon, been using an HTC HD2 with hacked Android and love it apart from the bugs etc...
Have 14 days to decide weather its worth it or if i need to switch carries to the Desire HD...
Hurry up DHL!!!
Did you already try to install on your HD7 some .CABs developed for WM6 ?
There are a couple of apps (SPB Wallet, iGO8) I couldn't live without, and losing them under WM7 would be a big problem.
Thanks

For the last week or so I've been playing around with streaming local media from my pc hard drive straight to the Chromecast by running the "Mongoose" server on my pc AND in the last 24hrs I've been messing around with Koushik's "AirCast" app.. I've had good overall results so far using both, with the exception of just one BIG annoyance. No matter which method I use to stream local content, whether it be from my PC hard drive using the mongoose server method OR playing local videos that I've got stored on my phone using Koushik's new "AirCast" app, I keep getting a single, thick, black bar along the bottom of the screen on every single movie. This happens on multiple TV's and I've tried several different movies and a couple of different file formats...it happens regardless. I've tried messing around with the TV settings on each TV and while it may zoom in on the movie or whatever, the black bar is still there. It looks like a typical widescreen movie, but with only the single black bar at the bottom of the screen...NO black bar up top at all. Again, this is happening on multiple TV's, with different movies, using different sources(sd card, phone's internal memory, PC hard drive). What's the deal? I've fooled around with settings on the TVs and I still can't get it to display correctly. I can actually get it to look right when I play a movie that is MEANT for "fullscreen" mode. In a fullscreen movie, it obviously looks right...it takes up the full screen. The only problem there is that most all of my movie collection is in widescreen format..I only have like 2 movies in fullscreen format and that's typical of most movies out there...it's harder and harder nowadays to find a movie in anything OTHER than widescreen. I shouldn't have to resort to just watching fullscreen movies...that shouldn't be the answer to this issue.. Can anyone else with this problem point me in the right direction.....? ......or is this just something that Developers(Google, Koushik, etc...) will have to work on? Thanks in advance!!
I've included a picture I took of what I'm talking about with my TV...
