why is there security on the g1/android - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

lets say you have all you stuff all pass worded with the apps you got the lock screen up. even the contact owner app to tell you call or email some one. so you think ur fone is fully protected right. oh and you have your wheres my droid app....i find your fone and just wipe it. i got a new fone fresh os ready for me to sign up and use your service.
thats what i think if i lost my fone. so is there an app out dere that can prevent/password home+power my fone and so no one can sell/use it?

Not yet...but you could ask cyanogen to implement a password-protected wipe feature? Plus just call your carrier and tell them to disable your IMEI number...phone will become useless

It doesnt really matter if the person uses the stolen phone, if they cant they'll just chuck it. Either way you're left without a phone...

If i found a g1 that doesnt seem damaged, i would never just throw it away. I would either sell it to some idiot or if i feel like i want maybe return it.

If this was implemented and the hard-spl was still on the device then the recovery image could be replaced allowing password-free flashing again

there is app that allerts you if someone puts another SIM card in you phone and it does work I tried it. SIM card checker

Yeah, my point was that password protecting the phone so it can't be reflashed doesn't help the victim, they are still without a phone. Tbh it sounds like more trouble than good to password protect the SPL and recovery. What if you forgot the password yourself?
SIM card checker sounds good, but again that's useless unless it gives you some kind of information that could help you recovery the phone.

IS MY PHONE BRICKED?!", I'd venture to guess that not many people are going to go through all the trouble.
besides, this is why you have the 5.99/mo insurance on your 400 dollar cell phone, you know, in case you do something stupid, like losing it. that way, all you do is call up your provide, have it put into a lost/stolen suspension, and then talk to the insurance carrier and get a new one. I think the $50 deductible is a low price to pay for being an idiot if you happen to lose your phone.

My girl dropped her first G1 in the toilet and lost her replacement. Each time Asurion charged her $150 deductable.
Whos your insurance provider? Maybe we need to move to Colorado...

I also dropped...er...threw it across the street in my drunken rage ignited by said lady...
I called TMO on her phone and told em it was a hardware issue: g1 just stop working....They had me troubleshoot, found i was still in warranty and sent me my replacement, absolutly free.
The warranty however doesnt cover water damage and she admited it was self inflicted thus, she was ineligible for warranty replacement and insurance was the only life saver.

Lost and Found Moral Issue

I lost my tilt a couple of days ago only to find it today after already calling it in to replace it under my warranty. My problem now is I already paid the 50 dollars to replace it. Should I send it back or give it to my brother who is begging for it. Can the company see that he will be using my "lost" phone even if he has his own sim card. Thanks for any advice.

Don't know where you're living, but in E.U they can block IMEI in the whole system. You also may involve in insurance fraud, too.
To my opinion, you should call the company to check if they want you to do, and don't forget to ask back the deduction fee if they tell you to send it back.
My phone's service was turned off and will be reactivated once the new phone arrives with my new sim card. But what my brother wants to do is put his sim card in my old phone so he can use it that way. but that seems pretty shady to me. I don't want to get in trouble with my phone company. Should i let him do it and just use the phone they send me or just return it? I already paid for the new one, so is it wrong?
if they have blocked the IMEI number (most do when a phone is reported stolen / lost) then your brother will not be able to use it.
also if they catch your brother using it you (and your brother) can be done for a few reasons:
Insurance Fraud
Using stolen goods (knowing they are stolen)
etc
so to be honest id just phone them and see if you return the phone if they can reverse the charge. alot less hassle than paying fines etc in the near future
You probably won't get away with it..
But if you could - by all means, screw the insurance company as hard as you possibly can.
Not that I advocate this behavior at all, but I have been in a similar situation and had no problem using a previously thought lost device with a different sim on what used to be Cingular.
Under what warranty did you replace it?
You agreed to ship the phone back to them if you did find it. There's instructions that come in the box. But whether or not you do it is up to you.
Two options -
A. Ring up the company and see which they want back, OR
B. Don't.
If you go with A. you might get your money back, but I doubt it. I also doubt they will let you keep both.
If you go with B. you will be comitting fraud and if caught you will be in legal trouble and I will have no sympathy for you. If your brother wants a tilt, he can go buy his own, do NOT give him the spare or you will be putting a LOT of trust in him. Do NOT use it as a phone or otherwise allow it to be used as a phone - it will get traced which will lead to legal problems.
Realistically, you should go with A. - it's the right thing to do, it's less risky and the handset should effectively be useless to you anyway.
I love how you title this as a moral issue, but your only question is if the company can find out about it. Doesn't sound like you have any moral concerns but rather "will I get caught" concerns.

Call them. There is such a thing as Karma, if you don't call them you very well might really lose it and they won't give one back.
Regarding moral issue - this is EASY PEASEY - trade places - you are them and they are you - should THEY return it to you? You reported it stolen/lost - they replaced it you no longer own the other one - you must send it back.
Another analogy - you call your insurance company and say you have filed a police report that your car was stolen and then find it in your garage - can you cash the check and get another car and drive two of them? Nope - you are going to get caught filing a false report to the police and do some serious jail time.
The IMEI number is unique to the phone - you are going to get caught if you play fast and loose - don't pretend that it is a moral issue when you only want to know if you can get caught.

I guess it really depends on who your service carrier is.
If its ATT/Cingular, I wouldn't return it. I'm almost 100% sure that they can track what phone you're using but not the IMEI number of that phone. The reason I say this is because I have a habit of switching or getting new phones every few months. I purchased the Tilt used from a HoFo member. I recently had problems with it and had to RMA it. They asked me for me IMEI number and I had a feeling it was past the year mark but they said that it looks like you've only had the phone since Sept so it would be covered under warranty. The thing is I got the phone from the HoFo member in Sept, but he said he had been using it for a few months prior to that.
But I could be wrong. You could always call ATT/Cingular and just be blunt about it and ask them if they can track your lost phone via IMEI because you have an idea of who might have it.

For all our European counterparts. In the E.U. it is very much illegal to use a "stolen" or "lost" phone. They also block IMEIs and CAN track them. For the life of me, all I've been able to find about whether the cell phones companies track or block IMEIs or phones is that we don't do it here the US. At&t and at&t's insurance companies have told me is "sorry, we can't track or block the phone from being used again." To me, the reason is obvious. If the phone is stolen, at&t gets a new customer and you have to buy a new phone.
You make your own decision and you make it at your own risk but search away and maybe you'll find the answer you're really looking for.
I doubt you'll spend the rest of your life in prison..... Hell maybe.... If you really feel bad about ripping off a mutli-billion dollar corporation that is already ripping you off. Huh.... Tough choice....
Ring the carrier, tell them to cancel warranty replacement as you have found the original and to refund you the $50 and reactivate the existing phone with either the old or new sim card. I believe under your statuatory rights (at least in the UK anyway) they would have to oblidge as you have the right to cancel a service (in this case the warranty replacement) within a reasonable amount of time.
Try it and save yourself $50 maybe....
This is no moral dilema at all. Just ask yourself "What Would Jesus Do?"
There's your answer.
Do the right thing. Call them and ask what you should do. That way there is no more guilt or fear.

Lying to T-Mobile to get your bricked G1 fixed?

So, I just got my G1 back after it stayed for a week in this Chinese repair shop. The Chinese men were not successful.
I'm just about to leave for the T-Mobile store. After I figure whether the warranty is in effect, I will come up with a clever reuse to trick the T-Mo man into sending in my brick for repair.
What's the best lie to tell?

Pretty much, just leave out the "I was updating.." bit. Blame the phone. "It said there was an update available. I hit OK, and it went dark..."

EDIT: Missed your reply. Well, I don't have a store within an hour of me, so I would always wind up calling. If you have the choice though.. Might be easier to pull it off without worrying about the look on your face. Not sure of any other downsides, since I never deal with any stores.

I literally just went through this if you've had you're g1 for less than a year just call tech support and they will send you a new one free of charge (you might have to pay the shipping depending on your insurence plan) good luck.

I think he's implying that you might need to pay for shipping on warranty swaps if you don't have insurance. Not that you need insurance for the warranty itself.

This may be a stupid question, but do you have to return the old one?
I just got off the phone with them, and they told me they can't do anything since I bought the phone from craigslist. He gave me HTC's phone number and told me to call them, since they will be able to do something. I'll call tomorrow morning since they're closed now, and see what they say. The T-Mobile representative said he doesn't know how much they'll charge or if they'll charge me at all. Hopefully this works out.
I had a similar situation since I also bought my phone off craigslist. HTC kinda gives you that threatening if they notice anything was modified on the phone you get charged bit. I was fortunately able to downgrade the phone to an RC29 (are you sure you shouldn't be attempting to throw that on instead of 7) then I upgraded it up with normal rc33 then cupcake. They took it and replaced my mainboard (my phone was overheating and unable to charge a battery fortunately the T-Mobile star gave me one of the stores batterys from a display device which gave me enough time to downgrade and get back up to cupcake) and didn't charge me anything so I lucked out. Goodluck!
I just got off the phone with HTC. Before I bricked my G1, it was RC29. They sent me shipping instructions and everything, and said I should be paying only for shipping, and $39 or less for repair. Hopefully everything goes well. I'll post my results.
Sometimes you can lie and say you bought the phone from a tmobile authorized dealer and they will swap it out. Just say it was a t a booth in the mall. This has worked for me in the past.
Also for the info on TMobiles warranty policy, if the phone was bought from them or a authorized dealer they will replace the phone for free, if you tell them the thing won't turn on they will not make you go thru more then taking out the battery and SD Card then putting the battery back in. If you tell them the phone will power on they walk you thru a bunch of steps. On a couple of my exchanges the rep sent me out a new phone, battery and wall charger.
You do have to send the broken one back, they send you a shipping label with the refurb phone they send you. Within the first year of owning a new phone with TMobile, insurance is only used if the phone is lost/stolen, water damaged, you broke it on purpose or you tell them strait out "i was flashing the newest JACHero ROM and blam it bricked!"
just call and say your phone isnt working. thye will try to wipe it, tell them its not working. they will send you a box with the new phone. you send back th eother one. dont say **** you dont have to. just keep it simple. DO NOT TELL THEM ITS ROOTED.
Well I'm going to ship it to HTC today, and they should be replacing it for free (I hope). I did go through HTC with this, not T-Mobile. T-Mo kicked me after I told them I didn't buy it from them. I told HTC I bought it from a private seller and they were like "ok that's cool."
I too once freaked out (not to be confused with my earlier freekeout) when my JFroot-to-cyanogen-to-hero theme went AWRY, and bricked at the g1 logo....
I sat there thinking of how much I screwed this one up, and promptly realized that insurance covers anything....and yes I will say, ANYTHING.

so without hesitation i made my 13 minute drive.
waited 10 minutes for a tmobile rep. explained that i booted up my phone this morning and it never booted after 2 hours of pocket time....also threw in that ive been on hold for a good hour restarting and trying differnt tricks...
without any hesitation, she typed up a few things, checked in the back and i was onm my way....
she said that if anything happens to bring it back, and if the next 3 brick aswell, then they will automagically give me a NEW phone....IE DIFFERENT model...as to keep who she repeatedly referred to me as a good "customer" happy
so im psyched. they don't know how lucky they were. and my new (seemingly) faster dream are back at it...

But idk i have something i pay for insurance its 6$$ a month i know i have it cuz i pay for it on my bill and it says can be fixed ...theft,stole,broke,etc.
so theres it it got stolen!
What should i do?can someone help i really want it back!but its hard to find in a mall with billions of people!
Is T-mobile going to recover this?
Can somebody tell me what i need to do?because im not fixing to pay another 400 dollars for the phone.

I guess hindsight is 20/20, but don't leave your personal belongings unattended if you don't want them to get stolen.
You could always try calling your phone. You could have tried calling a security guard to assist you if the thief turned up in the vicinity.
But since this occurred a while ago the best you can do now is just to file an insurance claim with Asurion.
Personally, I would be more worried about identity theft rather than the cost of replacing a phone. I suggest you immediately go change your Google Account password.
Did you have GPS and your "My Location" enabled? If so, track yourself down. lol
Find your IME and have your phone permanently disabled. Should be on the box.

I use an app called Pinpoint or something like that. You send a text to your number (you would use someone elses phone or e-mail or something obviously) with just the word "Locate" and it bounces back with the exact location. Unfortunatly the thief will likely notice the text and shut off the phone. However if you keep your phone LOCKED then you won't have to worry about it. Another unfortunate possibility is that the thief will also more then likely pull out your sim.
In regards to the "keeping the gps locate off to conserve battery" do this.
Download and install Locale. Set up a rule with a high priority (move it to the top) that when you recieve a call from a specific number it will turn on your GPS. Then track it down that way. There is also Latitude with Google, Loopt, etc that can give you an idea of where your phone is as long as they didn't clear or wipe your data. But as I said... if you keep your phone LOCKED they can't do that in the first place. Which buys you some time because they will have to research to find out how to wipe the phone. Since most people would use a computer at HOME... you might be lucky enough to track him down there. Just make sure you have a 'black and white' with you and be prepared to give evidence that it's your property. The G1 box has the IMEI and if you don't have that call T-Mobile (if you got it from them) and they can give you the IMEI over the phone.
Hind sight is always 20/20, but you will get a new phone and being careless is a bad habit. And bad habits are hard to break. So you'll likely do it again even though you say that you've learned your lesson. So take precautions next time (if there is a next time).
1) NEVER LEAVE YOUR STUFF UNATTENDED.
2) Have security preventions (such as system lock) on your device.
3) Have some software to recover your device should you not do #1 and/or #2.
I've been doing the theft and investigations line of work for about 6 years and I have caught 8 people and helped recover about 20 lost/stolen equipment. I'm so confident in recovery (as long as the preventions are already in place) that I've risked my Tilt by setting it out as bait just to see if anyone would take it WHERE I WORK. It turned up missing in less then an hour! I tracked it down the next day with the coordinates that it sent me.
It turned out that one of my supervisors found it and took it home. BUSTED! The next day he resigned. So... trust no one. Keep your **** locked, backed up and on you at all times! Even at home! (Caught my girl sneaking through it a couple of times ).

next time have your own mind and make a better decision. android gets stolen and you need to locate it, Yes theres an app for that....
It is always nice to see so many helpful people who never make mistakes.
Anyway call your provider and tell them your phone got stolen. That way they can put a freeze on the SIM (and IMEI if you are in Europe). Then deal with insurance and get it replaced. Not a big deal.
Personally I have locale running but would not bother trying to recover a stolen phone. It is not precise enough to track down the phone in realtime. Sim Checker could prove useful but I am not sure it would be worth the effort if the phone is insured. Remote Wipe would be the direction I would go. The hardware can be replaced but the personal info on the phone I would just as soon not get into a stranger's hands.
You still have to pay even if the insurance covers for your stolen phone. That's what i heard? Not entirely sure though. Next time be more careful.. I never leave my phone out of my sight .

[Q] Odin3 One-Click Downloader - Is It Legal

Here is why I am asking......
All of a sudden my phone would not connect to my PC. SO I took it to the service dept for AT&T. I knew tihs was going to be a huge mistake.
The girl bricked my phone and told me I would need to buy a new one for $365! I was freaking out and scoured the web and found this site!
I dowloaded Odin3 and my phone is working great!
First I want to thank anyone and everyone for the knowledge to get my phone working.........this was a lifesaver!
After she bricked my phone, I bought a GO Phone for $20 to hold me over until I could fix it or get a new one.
If I was able to do this, why wasn't AT&T able to do this?
Before I call Customer Service and chew someone out I want to make sure this is something they should have been able to do.

Nope, perfectly legal. I can't really see why it wouldn't be. The only reason they want you to buy a new one is because they are very greedy and will do anything to get your money. That's weird though, since usually they replace it for free if it's something like that
Mind you any damage that occurs to your phone while in a ATT representative is their responsibility, there for, they needed to replace. Given you where going to get a refurb probably xD. Odin is Samsung's own software. How ever it does void your warranty, In theory anyways.

Well.......I did sign a waiver that they were not responsible if something did happen.
First I shouldn't have signed the waiver.........but the fact that I did......and was able to fix my own phone.....why didn't they fix it......
The phone was a refurb and I was willing to pay for another refurb but she told me I couldn't since it wasn't under warranty....
And my other issue......I work in support in IT.......I am responsible for getting a user working..........whether I fix it or replace it.
This cellphone crap is a SCAM!

Just curious. Was this an Official ATT store or an authorized dealer/reseller?

My experience with local ATT service is 80% of them don't know how to use android. They really DO NOT know what they are talking about half the time. And just pure lazy.... I don't know if ATT has Odin, or offers it to them. Even if they do it will be on the few tecs each office might have.

Lol i have this problem 100% of the time....
i usually wind up schooling them, giving them my number, root their device and oddly enough the first thing they always ask for is free paid apps -___-
weird but its happenned a lot of times ....even when i was with verizon haha

T mobile won't replace my Note 4 because it's rooted?

I see a bunch of people who say they get can get replacement phones from t mobile with no hassle even if their knox counter is counted
Long story short, doesn't matter if it's stock or a custom rom, a few of my calls go straight to my voicemail and my phone doesn't even ring or give me a notification someone called. A few other people here had that problem and told me to just get a replacement. I don't care if it's a new or refurbished device but when I called t mobile and asked for a replacement they me to factory reset (which I did) and try turning off VoLTE and everything was going well until I had to open my big mouth and told him I rooted it. He said I am covered by the manufacture warranty if it's not rooted, since I told him it's rooted will they write a note on my account saying my warranty is voided? Do you guys think because I mentioned root, he assumed my device is still rooted?
Should I just call again and try a different person? I don't wanna lie and then have them charge me $699 if I don't tell them I rooted my phone on my 2nd try of getting a replacement....

simple. factory it back dont root. so its not lying. your device isnt rooted anymore. just dont tell them you rooted. Thats like shooting yourself in the head and praying your still live. Ignore the asshole who told you about noting your account. rooting doesnt break the phone. its already defective. it makes me so frustrated to hear any rep giving the customer the middle finger when they dont understand squat about root. If you are within the 14 day buyers remorse period i suggest you call into that department and get a new one sent out.
If you want to see if that person documented anything on the computer about your root comment call in and ask about the day you where helped by him. ask if the rep can read/look into the comments if there is any notes about your "return status". Try it a couple of times if no rep mentions about any root comment and void warrenty then you are good.
You my friend are definitely a noob. You never ever admit anything. Never. And the proper fix would be for you to call tech support and tell them your phone rings once before voicemail and you wish for them to extend ring time before voicemail. That will fix your issue.

Your Warranty Is Not Void ...I'm not sure the validity of this but it makes sense per the consumer protections on warranties.

Just called and the rep said the last thing the note says was to factory restore and see if problem persist. So I guess I'll call in a few days, it's likely a hardware problem anyways

I had the same issue when I activated my note 4 with Tmo. Wasn't receiving calls or texts. Called customer service then they ended up creating a tech ticket. Because they couldn't solve it themselves, they told me give them 48hrs. And it'd fixed. After about 13hrs they had it fixed. So give them a call explain your issue DON'T AND NEVER MENTION ROOT. Be persistent don't hang up until you have an answer. And they'll fix it..

I can't blame them for not wanting to support every newbie that miss flashes or flashes a crappy rom and can't get his dialer or modem to work or some other silly bug.
Like "let me experiment and then let Verizon bail me out with a new phone everytime I can't find my way out of the mess I created"
A simple factory reset should fix all, but some destroy even that ability.
Yes they can reflash but it shouldn't be under warranty.. Should be a fee to bail such folks out... Sorry that's not popular to say but if you owned Verizon, would you do the same?
Buy a car and tear into the engine and screw it up then try to get warranty to fix it!
But I agree, if you own your phone and are willing to sign a disclaimer releasing them from warranty they should remove restrictions.
That still makes them vulnerable to folks messing with the network though.
As long as they can't tie the problem to your mishandling your good.

That's not true my first note 4 was rooted and it shows that on their end I didn't even bring it up. The lady told me to restore back to oem spec if I wanted to keep my warranty. I did and called back the next day they sent me a new phone.

The only way that happens is if you use the mytmobile app. Which is still your fault. We all know it sends back info to them about root status.
