Almost Bricked HD - Touch HD Windows Mobile ROM Development

Hi everyone,
I've got a HTC Touch HD from Telstra, been using it for a long time. Recently the USB has stopped working correctly. I can charge it fine but can't get it to connection in Activesync mode or as USB Storage.
I have ruled it to be the phone:
Tried two PCs, even the PS3 doesn't detect anything is connected (Just shows phone is charging)
Tried XP, Vista and Windows 7 (fresh installed).
I have hard reset the phone many times.
It is under warranty, I have flashed Dutty's Extreme rom onto it and want to simply put a stock rom on it (preferrably Telstra) so I can send it away - or see if that fixes it.
I can't install any unsigned roms as I need USPL (via USB), I can't install signed roms as if I put them on there I get '00028002 Not Allow'
Where can I got next? I can still put BLACIMG.bbh files on the storage card but can't get any to flash.
It has SPL 1.54 and Radio 1.14.25.24.
I really want to flash it with: Duttys HD WM6.5 R7.
Thanks.

Previously you could flash cooked roms, but now you are unable to flash any, correct?
When in bootloader does it still change from 'serial' to 'usb'? Have you tried another usb cable?

Yes I could flash cooked roms, only by using USPL.
In bootloader when I have the cable plugged in it is blank where it should say USB, I take it out and it says 'Serial'
I have also tried the cable from my old Touch Diamond (which both cables work fine with the Diamond).

What happens when you try and run either USPL or HSPL?

On the computer? It can't detect USB. Both computers don't even get to the stage where it installs drivers.
The PS3 would even say 'Unknown USB Device Connection' but it doesn't. I just get power through USB to charge it, that is it.
Is there a rom I can flash to my phone via the storage card in the state it is in?

Unfortunately you cannot flash through storage card unless you have USPL on device.

Sad face. lol.
Can I get USPL or HSPL on through the Storage card... wishful thinking here.
Can I send it to HTC and pay for it to be repaired? Will they even touch it being a modified phone? Maybe I'll just send it through Telstra and see what happens.

USPL & HSPL both require usb to be installed and cannot be installed through SD card as phone needs to be in bootloader.
You could send phone to be repaired but I'm sure the cost would be high and going down warranty route wouldn't work either as you've voided warranty already by using cooked rom.
Have you followed correct guide for installing drivers?

maybe it's something as silly as "Enable Faster Data Transfer" under USB to PC settings :/ just had problems connecting mine until i unticked it, even though i never turned it on or off, seems to work sometimes, other times not :/

Here is your only choice though.
After upgrading to new ROM, try it again whether it can connect to pc or not?
Connect your SD card to PC through microSD card. Copy all files from your SDcard to new folder in your PC. Then, right click on the microSDcard disk-->full Format by FAT32 (this step is very important).
After formatting SDcard, copy back all files to SDcard . Rename .nbh to BLACIMG.nbh (for Blacktone) and copy it to SDcard.
Insert your SDcard back to Touch HD. Turn off your device by Power button.
Go to Boot loader mode. Push and hold Vol. Down + press Power button.
After that your device with have a white screen with text " Press to power button for continue upgrade" press power button and it will start upgrade Rom.
You can check this video for more practical actions on youtube.(this video for HTC diamond2 but it's almost the same with Blacktone just different in rename step)
Hope it helps and cheer

But that's the thing I can't get any rom to work through the BLACIMg.nbh storage method
I think I'm either going to have to stick with the current rom, have no usb transfer.
Or pay up to repair it
EDIT: I already tried the "Enable Faster Data Transfer" and that didn't help Thanks.

Where is your MicroSD card ? Connect your SD card to your PC via MicroSD card.

Right,
you don't need anything installed on your phone to run uspl.
Put blacimg.nbh on your sd card with a card reader.
Now with the card still unplugged put your phone into bootloader mode.
Now connect it to your computer, does serial change to usb??
Now insert your storage card.
Now run crackwhores USPL GUI and fingers crossed it should start flashing.
If that doesn't work let us know!
Also, what cable are you using, the one that came with the phone or a normal usb one??
Cheers,
Jake

No usb connection
So if i don´t get the usb connection in tri-color mode i´m in big trouble right?
I got the same problem
Mine is only saying serial on three diffrent computors... this is not good, i went to buy my self a new phone.

If i were you i would try 2 things.
There was a temporary spl which you would run from inside the OS and then that would give you access to either uspl or hspl.
If that wouldnt work, i would buy a usb replacement kit from ebay and install it myself tbh.

In the same situation
I too, tried everything under the sun for my Telstra HD but cannot get the USB connection to work before. Here's my short thread. I'm pretty sure there isn't anything that can be done flashing wise through the SD card because of our SPL 1.54.0000.
After a week of stuck in this situation I was going to take my phone to a shop and have the usb port replaced. I'm sure it will cost an arm.
In terms of replacing the port myself, has anyone tried? Is it tough to do? I thought soldering skills were involved.

Once you open up device warranty is voided permanently. If you paid for a replacement usb port and something else happened you could still return under warranty, but once opened option of warranty is forever closed!

As of now, its the only route because the lack of original spl has already voided my warrenty... =(

Ha. Today must be my lucky day!
I was a breath away from spending $75 to have my HD ripped apart to replace the usb port yesterday. But all of a sudden the port once again works and is recognized in bootloader mode.
All I did was hard reset once, used as normal, and plugged in via usb to charge with power on (just to see if it might work this 187429th time) and the usb menu (activesync, disk drive...) came up. I retried. It didn't work (just as I thought). Went to bootloader and it also didn't work. Restarted, usb menu was up again. Rebooted bootloader a few times and suddenly usb came on.
I will proceed to flash hspl 1.56 immediately.
To the dudes that still can't connect: DON'T GIVE UP YET, KEEP TRYING!

One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned

DESPERATELY NEED HELP.
Every time i connect my wizard to my machine using the USB cable, i get the following message in baloon.
"One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it."
It appears as "Unknonw Device" on windows device manager.
This started happening when i changed my ROM to AMP.v2.Vanilla. Prior to that my wizard was connecting fine. I have been trying to resolve this for days now but no luck.
Following are the things i have tried.
1. Un-installed Activesync & re-installed.
2. Soft & Hard Reset the device.
3. Tried going in bootloader so that i can install my preivous rom, but the machine still doesnt recognize the device and gives the same message as mentioned above.
4. Removed all the USB controllers and re-installed in the machine.
5. Tried on different machines but same results, so its not machine specific.
6. Tried with a new cable to so its not the cable, it has to be the device.
Anyone who can help with this. I am sure i am not the only one having this trouble.
Any kind of help is appreciated. Just need to connect and go back to my preivous rom.
FYI: I am running WINXP SP2 on my machine.
ROM: 10.0.0.10
Radio: 02.69.11
Protocal: 1.1.13.30
Thanks in advance.
Nick.
You can flash in bootloaders mode, its not necessary to activesync.Get you phone in Bootloaders (tri color screen) by holding down Camers button and either Soft Reset or push Power On button,it'll go into bootloaders, hook up the phone with pc via usb cable, watch small usb appear at the bottom of the bootloaders, its good to go and run the RUU in the Rom,it'll start to flash and upgrade.Solve the activesync problem afterwards.
Thanks for the reply mate but i have already tried that.
I went into the booloader and connected the usb. It does show USB at the screen, however my PC doesnt recognize it and the RUU doesnt run. It says to connect the device.
I am not at all worried abt the activesync. Syncing is the last thing i'll think. I just want to connect and go back to my previous rom.
Any other suggestions.
Please see attached screen shots.
This sounds like a hardware issue on your phone. I doubt this works but go to start -> settings -> connections -> usb-pc and either check or uncheck the box then close that app.
If that doesn't work Search for the thread on flashing from the miniSD card. But again, this sounds like the usb on your phone has failed.
I have tried checking the USB to PC and unchecking it. No help with that.
One more interesting thing is the phone does get charged with the USB cable, just doesnt connect.
Will check the thread for flashing from minisd.
Thanks bunches.
hmm,
Hard reset your phone and uncheck the option 'allow network connections' or something in the phone settings...> connections...> usb to pc
This error occurs when there is an “open port error” before upgrading ,You can reset the device and run RUU again. If you still encounter an “OPEN PORT ERROR” again, reset your computer and try again. disable or stop any antivirus/firewall running or any other such program which might be hindering the flash, don't surf the net.
Kill 'WCESCOM' altogether,in the Task Manager, stopping activesync.

hmmm, you got a connection problem buddy, the mini usb port of the phone is broken or damaged, you cannot flash with sdcard method, untill you already had made a backup of the rom earlier and saved it on the sdcard.
Get the mini usb port of the phone repaired or you can try to wriggle it a bit and check if it works and try to hold it there in that possition till the flash completes.
IS there a place i can get step by step process of flashing through SD card?
For all the forums, i am not able to understand anything./
Even the mtty doesnt work, it doesnt open the usb port.
No Luck as of now.....Am very desperately waiting for any Saviour....PLEASE
No other way out, except to get the freakin mini usb port repaired or replaced.

Dang, thats right. I forgot that on the Wizard you can only flash a previously saved rom image. Can't just flash roms like you can on the Tilt.
Yep, basically, you have to get the USB port fixed as you are stuck where you are currently at on the Wizard I'm afraid.
Thanks guys. Have given my Wizard to get the Mini USB Port changed. I have my fingers crossed. Hope it works.
What exactly happens to the mini usb port?
I am having the same problem syncing.
The phone hooks up, charges, and makes the "connected" sound when I plug it into the usb port, but NO activesync...DOH!!!
Honestly, i couldn't figure it out.....no one seems to know whats the cause. The phone is bricked. It wont even start now... and its lying....
I am using an LG KS20 these days.....
Let me know if somebody happens to find a solution for that.

Dear NIce_shire,
i am having the same problem and i got it resolved just by holding and tightly pressing the mini usb in my device. Its basically the problem with mini usb port of pda (Hardware) not a software one. Get it reparied from market or do it by urself. Good Luck!
USB link?
Hi mfrazzz
I have the same problem - USB link stopped working after a Radio upgrade. Definitively not a h/w USB miniport problem. Even when I get the Wizard G3 phone into bootloader and the USB word is at the bottom in the white line, flashing ROMs does not work as the RUU reports Error message stating no USB link (BTW, ActiveSync also reports no mobile device present and doesn't connect).
Is this a bricked phone then?
Thanks.
DesperateDan
PS The set is an MDA Vario and I had successfully installed S.V.I.s Manila 4.5 Beta (IPL 1.01, SPL 1.01 shows now, but was IPL 1.01, SPL 1.06 prior to installing Manila and Radio was 1.12.10 and I upgraded it to 2.69.11 and then the bloody thing stopped working and the USB link can't be enabled again)
Dear all,
I was facing the same issue of "USB device malfunctioned" and got it resolved yesterday. Its not because of software neither coz of cable (i did changed lots of cables but faced the same issue), its just because of mini USB in device. Its working perfectly alright now, it may not be replaced even dont need replacement at all. It needs minor soldering, even you can do it by urself. Just open 4 screws at its back (two under the camera cap one is below stylus placement and 4th is on opposite side) and open it. No need to be worried about......

Can't flash Kaiser HardSPL in any way???

Iv'e tryed to flash HardSPL to Kaiser... Downloaded various unlockers/flashers, even SD card solution... When trying to flash over usb with some Kaiser-HardSPL.exe - after entering tricolor mode and when progressbar appears it always stuck on 0%, and nothing happens... Update utility shows error (Rom update utility encountered communication error or smth.) and sugests me to do recovery. Tryed everything - SoftSpl1.56, Softspl1.93, SSpl-kais...
Other method i've tryed - SD card
Iv'e followed instructions, formatted card, copied those two files (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=420683) to sd card, but after resetting Kaiser it only shows "Loading..." and hangs... no restart, nothing... just "loading..." on screen...
Bootloader menu shows following versions:
KAIS130
SPL-3.29.0000
CPLD-8
somehow... after trying another 1000 -th time... it just flashed...
Have exactly the same problem, tried all other solutions! any idea on what the last method was that worked?
When flashing via USB it will hang at 0% (and fail w/ 260 error on PC side) if the SD card is left in. I've made that mistake more than once.
Remember to remove SIM, too.
I don't have sd card and I've got the same problem...
Any ideas?
I have the same problem. I want to upgrade Hard SPL 3.24 to newer version. I always get 262 error. Also tried all possible ways (MicroSD uses FAT32, but I didn't formatted It, because I don't have SD adapter).
Sometimes It's shown that flashing complete, but HardSPL version still is the same.

Are you using sspl to upgrade? sim and sd out? usb cable or sd flash? Do you already have a hspl and are just upgrading?
If you're on an original spl you must use sspl to do it.
If you're upgrading then you can use the kaisdiag file by cmonex and an sd.

Simple Rom Question

I don't have a usb cable to connect my phone to my pc, can i download and install a ROM, thru my cell phone phones internet connection since most of the ROMS are .cab files ?
Thanks Chris
Id suggest a little more research before trying to flash your phone. You can use the .nbh file on a non HC memory card, or through usb using the RUU (update program).
i used to have a xv6800 that i updated the rom before, so i know how to do it, just didn't know if i could do it with out a usb cable

i just read your link, about newbie flashing
I just want to make sure i read it 100% correctly.....the only way to to do it is via usb cable connected to my computer, i cant not due it thru my phone via internet connection on my phone
Thanks Chris
Hi chris347101,
Flashing a ROM over wireless (cell or other) is extremely risky and prone to failure, let alone the time it would take to download it to your device SD card over wireless - the typical ROM size is well over 128MB in size.
Best practice would suggest that flashing be performed over USB cable via a PC or using an SD card. I could be mistaken, but I believe the SD Card flashing process requires that your device has been HardSPL'ed - i.e. not the stock SPL.
HTH,
thank you for your answer, that's what i thought but i just wanted to make sure......know i just need to find a usb cable for my htc touch pro alltel

Hard SPL via MicroSD card

Hello all,
I'm having big problems syncing my phone to pc...is the above possible via MicroSD card...I know flashing a rom is but can I hard SPL it in the same way
Thanks in advance
I don't believe it is possible unfortunately.
What issues are you having? Have you tried updating (or even downgrading them depending on what you currently have) the usb drivers?
The probleme that most of us flashing new cooked ROMs & my device get stucked several times. Likely it is connected via USB, Otherwise I can not do any thing.
Also due to several ROM flash times the USB connection in HD (or other devices) might broken.
This why we need a way to install USPL or HSPL via SD card.
Can some one help?
Regards
What I don't understand is how can a usb port become 'broken' due to flashing several custom build roms?
I too having a problem with the usb port on my blackstone. It can only be charged but not synchronized with pc anymore. I had HTC pick up my phone to have the mainboard replaced. Luckily the phone was still under warranty, so it won't cost me much.
Can someone explain?
i had similar probs ...
went to regedit , local maschine, software, microsoft,
windows ce services and changed to (1) the key : hasusbdevice
after this no problems anymore
it seems that a program installation changes this number from 1 to 0.
i have win 7 32

This is not possible infortunately. However you do not need your device sync'ed with your pc to run HSPL. You only need to put device into bootloader and then connect it to pc. Bottom of bootloader should change from 'serial' to 'usb'. If not, you will need to update usb drivers. All this info can be found on this thread, no need for another

[Q] Help! Problem with... alot!

Need some help in getting a stock rom to work and flashing a custom rom once thats' fixed.
I decided to go back to a basic HD2 and reload my custom rom on a fresh system. I downloaded and installed a stock rom, went to install my custom rom (Elegancia v2) and a couple things happened. First the flash failed with an error that there was a communication problem, though I could see the device on Active Sync. Now it's stuck at the white HTC page when I turn it on so something is wrong with the stock rom is some way to prevent it from booting through. It did that yesterday but not today. All I"ve done is continue to try to flash the custom rom and fail.
A magic bullet would be nice here.
Ok sense you posted this in the T-Mobile Development section I assume you have a TMOUS HD2 and I also am going to assume you got your stock ROM via the official T-Mobile HTC HD2 upgrade. You can try to reflash the ROM by manually putting your HD2 into bootloader (muticolor screen). Turn your HD2 off and then turn it back on but hold down the volume down button as it is booting it will bring up bootloader. Connect your HD2 via USB cable to your computer and wait until the Serial in the white bar of bootloader changes to USB and your computer regonizes your HD2 (this should happen simultaneously). Right click on the update utility and click on run as adminastrator.
But if you keep getting the communication error you can try flashing via a SD card. You will need a SD card formated Fat 32 it is recommended to use a smaller GB card but if you format your 16GB SD card it should work. Make sure you make a back up copy of your SD card on your computer before you reformat it. To learn more abput how to do this go to this thread. It can tell you all you need to know to flash via SD card. Also when you rename the Ruu_signed.nbh file it is not case sensative so you can name it LEOIMG.nbh or leoimg.nbh it does not matter. Be advised though no matter wich method you use to flash you will have to reflash HSPL to your HD2 before you can flash your custom ROM.

Tried that and no joy. I can get to the bootloader and see USB at the bottom of the screen but it won't go beyond that. Such is life. Hmmmm when you have your HD2 plugged into the computer while in bootloader and it says USB in the white bar of bootloader. Go down to the bottom right of your task bar and click on the little icon to safely remove a device. See if it lists your phone as "HTC USB Sync". If it does not list it as this you need to either try another USB port or update your USB drivers. Try updating the drivers while your HD2 is connected to your computer and in bootloader.

I had the same problem. I was in the bootloader screen with USB showing at the bottom. But when I tried to flash something I'd get a connection error. I just unplugged the usb from my pc and plugged it into a different usb slot, and walaa it started installing the htc drivers. Also in active sync, check the connection settings and make sure allow usb connections is checked.
Thank you for sharing, like very much
