Rooted and do not have green android icon anymore - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i recently rooted my phone and when i try to upgrade anything on my phone from xda it cant. it is telling me that the updates are cancelled. when i first rooted my phone it had the green android icon but now it just comes up android in blue, is this a problem.

Sounds like you flashed a ROM with an alternate boot image (Cyanogen, maybe?). One of the most common mistakes that people make is assuming that the phone is not doing anything during the initial load, which takes a long, long time.
Do you have adb? If so type adb logcat while the phone is booting during the "blue logo." If you see the phone is loading up a bunch of stuff (and the stuff doesn't repeat itself), WAIT! After a while you will come to your home screen.

i do not know what adb is sorry for being so new to this. is this an application or etc... all i know is that i downloaded jf updater and everything changed to the way the phone was right before i rooted it.
thanks for helping

The blue android text during boot up is because you flashed an ADP ROM, this is normal, don't worry.
When you say an update what do you mean? Do you mean a ROM (update.zip) or the update t-mobile just pushed out? I assume you're talking about the latter, don't worry about that update, you don't need it.
Btw, what's with the green text? Kinda annoying to read...

sorry about the green. the rom upadate.zip and a update from jf updater. how do i correct this problem.

I'm not really sure what you're asking. To root just follow the guides in the development section..

sorry for any confusion
sorry for the confusion, if have already rooted the phone. I was just wondering what upgrades would you all advice me to get. For instance what are some good applications that everyone is using.

Good applications is really a personal prefrence. All I can say is play around and find the ones you like.

tell me what u are looking for. loking for a hero rom? they do run a bit laggy but it looks nice
or do u want speed and a different look.?
apps are a personal preference but my fav apps are phandroid, tech buzz for android news. atrackdog is a must have! use it daily to find updates for ur current apps since the default update notifier doesnt always work. ringdroid to make ring tones. and opera min..internet browser built for speed. u might think its gay at first but its speed is awesome and u just have to get used to it.

Personally, I would recommend you start by picking a good ROM to put on your phone (I recommend Cyanogen's)...then tweak and hack away XD

When you buy the phone it should come with cupcake, if not it will tell you that there's an update available and prompt you to download and install it.
Yes, you can return the phone to it's stock "unrooted" firmware whenever you want.
Btw, it's called "rooting" not "jailbreaking"...
ok so is your g1 rooted.. do u like it.. do u think i should... i am a guy in his 20's and i am not mr tech but def. am into tech stuff. so i know somewhat. but i just feel like i should for the third party apps. etc etc.. and if i root it.. will tmobile or google still tell me when there is a update avaiable

Yes, My G1 is rooted. To be honest I was kicking myself for not rooting it sooner, I love it. I can't really tell you if you should do it or not. The great thing about it is you can experiment with different ROMs/firmwares as much as you want or you can just flash one you like and keep it for as long as you want.
If you have root you can
1) Flash ROMs like Cyanogen mod which are optimized for performance.
2) Flash themes to change the look of your phone...
3) Move apps to your memory card so you have more space for them
If any of those appeal to you then you might want to root. Be prepared to read up a bit first, it helps if you know a little bit about linux too. I'm 15 btw, this rooting stuff isn't very hard ;-)
if i root the fone to the youtube video i showed you.. is there anything else i should install or anythign
and if i root the fone.. and like 5 months from now somehtign silly and little happens when i am on the fone with tmobile support when the guy is walking me throuhg somehitng and i didnt tell him its rooted is everythign gonna be different .. and where do i find unrooting directions etc

*Don't* use that video, it's very outdated. There is a much simpler "one-click" method that will do that same thing.
You will always be able to recovery your phone if you are just flashing ROMs. If you're flashing SPLs (your phones bootloader) then there is a possibility you could brick your phone. In that case Tmo should replace your phone as long as you say that it wasn't bricked because of you rooting it. Btw, you really shouldn't worry, G1's are hard to brick.
Download a stable cyanogen rom, flash reboot , check to see all is working, power down, restart into recovery and make a nandroid backup for just in cases, reboot, download cmiupdater to stay up to date but just stick with stable builds unless you what to be a guina pig. Sit back and enjoy a great os, laugh at your friends with crappy iphones

Questions
1.can I update to cupcake without having to setup my phone?(i dont have data plan)
2.Whenever I try to download something on the market, it just says 'starting download' and never starts
3.Can I develop apps with the current android sdk that will work on firmware 1.1 AND 1.5?
I do not have a data plan, and I had to go to a T-Mobile store and fight with the people there until they finally let me use a SIM card to set it up...and I do NOT want to go through that again
also, I'm a C++ programmer with 3 years experience, but no experience at all in Java...so will it be hard, or easy to start developing apps for android?
PLEASE help me with this, even if you can only answer one of the questions it will be GREATLY appreciated since this phone is more complicated than a rubiks cube!

Yes, you can update it and it won't ask for a re-avtivation, dun worry buddy !
The market stuff is crazy sometimes ! Just reboot the phone, and everything will be ok ( make sure your wifi connection is strong enough )
Since I am only a highschool's senior, I can't answer the last question ! Sorry
When you start a project using eclipse with the SDK installed correctly it will ask you 1.1, 1.5, or API.
Search the forums about activating without a dataplan there are instructions on how to do it.
You need the current sdk for cupcake, there is also a ndk for making native c apps too now, so hope you make something good
thanks for the replies.
I rebooted the phone and the downloads worked thx
do you know how to install the cupcake update? I went to setting and system updates, but it said my phone was up-to-date

Since you are on a modded rom, you cannot receive updates, pick out a new rom and go into recovery and flash it, since I am going to assume you are on an old recovery, you are gonna have to rename it to update.zip and put it on the root of your sd

You can manually install the update using the threads here, or at t-mobile.com/forums ( go the development section ). The update feature of the phone sucks badly, don't trust it
btw, u make me feel old (
I found on google that if you place update.zip on your phone and boot by pressing home+power, you can update it like that, but will that make me have to setup my phone again? I dont have a data plan, so i'll just stay with 1.1 if I have to
I haven't really started with android development yet, but I've given it a look over. I'm coming from c#.net and most of the syntax is the same, as they are both have roots in C you shouldn't have a problem there. So it's mostly just learning the platform and it's library. .net is managed though like android.
Eclipse isn't really in the same league as Visual Studio though.

if you flash a rom that is based on the adp phone (cyanogen's comes to mind)
you can skip singing into your google account until you have wifi set up.
so if i just do the update.zip trick with the cyanogen thing I wont have to sign in with google at all??!?!

99% sure about this, I've been flashing ROMs, Radio and stuffs regarding my G1 for a while. At first it was kinda scared indeed, but as long as you get through the first time, the left is as easy as eating an apple pie . Ask me and I will answer if I can
all you do is
put the update.zip on the root of your sdcard (i.e. no folders)
power down your phone and boot into recovery with home and power
(optional but may be required if your phone doesn't boot all the way up.)
wipe your phone.
flash the rom
reboot and wait for phone to boot up
choose to skip signing into google
set up your wifi
open the market and you can sign into google on wifi and be able to download apps.
OMG IT WORKED! thanks to all of you
hopefully it wont crash in the future!

Help Me Please

I feel I've made a terrible (and stupid) mistake. I decided to unroot my phone from cyanogen roms. I read a how to guide that I guess was outdated because now I have android 1.0 firmware. The guidw was [how to] unroot by tubaking182 (absolutely zero offense to him, not his fault, I'm stupid, etc etc.) So I now have stock version 1.0. There's no check for system updates under about phone in settings so I can't do that. There are file manager apps that I could use to rename the necessary updates into update.zip, but there's no apps available like download crutch so I can download them. I also can't enter recovery. It gives me a triangle with an exclamation inside next to a image of a phone and that's it and I have no idea how to install an update without recovery mode. As I'm sure you've noticed by now, I'm the epitome of newb and feel free to laugh at my failure. I just really need someone to help me and would be eternally grateful. In all likelihood, I'll need step by step instructions on what to do. I know this is a lot to ask and I've really done nothing to earn this help... I really just need assistance. Thank you to anyone who helps me in advance
Not to be an asshole and say "Shoulda Coulda Woulda" but you really should have done your research before embarking on bricking your phone.
ItsAndroidsWorld had many videos on You Tube. Look for ones on how to root, then how to install the death spl, then look for the ones with Super D or FastTest .. as it seems as though they are probably the best roms for everyday use at this point.
I've found that using these videos via You Tube is the easiest way to go.
Good Luck.

yeah man no problem. good luck.
Don't do anything. In a day or two you get an OTA update.
You can force the update like people have mentioned, but as long as you can hold off for a day or two you dont need to.
BTW, at some point you will see the E or 3G icon downloading like crazy and you dont know why. It is downloading the update. Stay away from task killers and in my experience it is good to be around wifi.
Just relax.

[Rooting] In all honesty, is it really worth it? Im thinking about going back to stoc

**Edit: I was completely wrong.. I figured out everything, i know what i'm doing now lol.. thanks guys.
My first time rooting was a couple days ago when i had learned about the "1 Click Root" method...
I succeeded, got that latest ROM (to my knowledge) CM6 RC2 from the trusty (lol) ROM Manager.. which i enjoy a lot since im rooted and what not. I also themed my ROM a couple times to (what i think) are pretty cool themes..
But anyways, to make a boring story short (lol).. I absolutely hate (with a passion) wiping my data to my phone when i see or hear about this awesome new theme i want.. people say it is a must to wipe ur phones data to apply the "best" effect..
This gets REALLY old.. i had to do this like three times yesterday because i kept seeing new themes i wanted lol.. Re-entering passwords and re downloading all of your apps everytime you want a new ROM or want to apply a theme is too much work for how "great" rooting is.. Dont get me wrong, i love the new style of my phone, it looks amazing, but man! do i really have to keep wiping data to apply the things i want??
I now, noticed that all my contacts are not my phone. Only the contacts phones numbers on facebook that i had sync'd.. "My" contacts that i have in my phone are not there.. I imported them from my sim card and re-booted, but still not there.. Could this be because of my theme?
To what really made me mad was my camera, it keeps force closing.. Is this also because of the theme? I have the normal radio ending in 4.06.00.12_7.. I do not know if it didnt work before i applied the theme or when i rooted, i just realized last night it didnt work.. i do not want to re flash cm6 to see if the camera is working just because i do not want to "start" all over again.. with wiping and all that... if i have to, sadly, i will.
I had stock froyo frf91 before i rooted my phone.. in all honesty, should i just un root my phone and go back to the way it was? because if i have to keep wiping data, and starting over, im going to blow a fuse lol..
*** Sorry for my aggressive tone everybody, i just would like everything to be a smooth ride wth no wiping and i can apply themes as easy as 123 without losing data.. is there any ROM or theme that you could recommend?
please, someone help me... thanks xda community
I don't ever wipe when I upgrade to the next version of cyan, so I don't lose a single thing. People say to wipe if you have problems. But you shouldn't have problems which means you don't need to wipe. It runs perfectly fine for me this way with no issues at all, no force closes, etc.

Really? hmm.. ok thanks man.. but in rom manager when you downlaod something, it brings up an option saying backup and wipe.. do i have to click that or can i just cancel and just go ahead and reboot..?
The way I do it (maybe not the fastest) is to set up your rom exactly how you want it, nandroid, then install any mods that might eff up your installation. Once you've installed the mod and you're 100% sure mms/wifi/bt/gmail/etc are all working, you can nandroid again and use that as your base.
The only time you'd need to wipe is if you want to set up another rom so you could switch back and forth between different roms.
And by different roms I don't mean updates within roms, like CM6 nightlies or enom's updates, I mean completely different roms like CM6 as opposed to enom.

Ok thank you.. what about for themes and what not...? it says i have to wipe as well....
Your problem looks to be trying to navigate complicated stuff with lack of skills.
There is a good reason to root "old-fashioned" way, without 1-click stuff: if you read all you need to read and understand (various guides that teach you how to work with recovery etc) to root, then you won't get lost when rooted. Now you're trying to do stuff without even knowing, how things work, and let me guess - you didn't read any guide, you don't know how to work with recovery w/o ROM manager and don't know how to load a ROM, etc.
My suggestion is - go to Development section, open the stickies with guides and start reading. Do the same in General section, and don't skip the Wiki either.
Root brings you full control of the system, and it's excellent - knowing your way you can do tons of stuff, theming being the least interesting/important. But to control, you need to know and understand more than "1-click stuff".
Or you can just go back to stock, if you see no added value in a rooted phone.

What theme are you talking about, I don't recall seeing any themes requiring a wipe.
The only thing I can think of is a pre-themed rom. If you don't know the difference between a theme and a themed rom, you should follow Jack's advice and read up.
Your mistake is thinking that because there is an option to wipe in Rom Manager, then it must be necessary. No it isn't. The option is there for the people who want to wipe, but upgrading from one CM to another won't need it, themes won't need it, etc.
It is your job to know when it is needed or not. And you get that by reading and understanding how your phone works.
just wipe the Cache and the Dalvik Cache, the only time you must fully wipe is if you get boot loop when flashing a new rom/mod/etc.

You certainly do not wipe to install a theme. That makes no sense! You would lose all your data all the time.

I'm still running stock unrooted. One off the main reason why i don't really want to root is because I know how customizable our phones are, and i love new things.. like you, if i was to see a new theme Or rom I'd jump on it straight away. I don't think I'd ever stop!!

Honestly that's exactly why I didn't root for 3 months. But once I found my exact setup now I just know how to setup each new ROM quickly. After that point now its just fun to tinker the phone and try the cyan nightly. It's really better to just root it. I was in the same spot as you I know what you mean.

I'm still running stock unrooted. One off the main reason why i don't really want to root is because I know how customizable our phones are, and i love new things.. like you, if i was to see a new theme Or rom I'd jump on it straight away. I don't think I'd ever stop!!

I still haven't stopped haha its great bro I'm tellin ya

Please help me to root my HTC Hero today..

I would like to get into the scene of rooting my phone now and exploring what it can do. Maybe there's not much it can do that I am expecting, but I won't know what its all about until I do it and get familiar with it.
So I was wondering if anyone could help me out and tell me the best/maybe easiest method to root my phone? It is the HTC Hero with software build of 2.31.651.7 and Firmware version 2.1 -update1
If I am able to root it, which rom would you all suggest I try out as a noob? I don't really want the Sprint TV or Amazon MP3 bloatware. I would like to be able to keep stuff like my gmail, Androidd market, Sprint GPS iff it matters. I would also like to be able to do some customizing in a similar way like with Launcher Pro Plus.
Am I able to root, and if so, can someone help me to be able to root my phone today?
Thank you for your help and time,
Whiteice

If you want to theme (i.e. decompiling framework and rebuilding) you need a DeOdex rom.
GMail and the Market are in every rom and I am pretty sure Sprint GPS is installable from its apk.
But once you have root access you can get RootExplorer and Navigate to /System/App (if its in the same spot as the evo) and delete the bloatware from your stock rom.
I would also like to know the root method of choice for the Hero.
I need to root someone elses phone.
Edit: These might be worth a look.

Unrevoked root method. Not sure if it works on 2.31.651.7. http://unrevoked.com
Universal Root App: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
z4root app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833954
But remember... I am far from knowledgeable about the Hero, so wait for someone more experienced to confirm.

So when I install a custom rom, does it install the Sprint APK file for me, and then from that point I choose whether to install it or not? If that is the case, does it do this will all the default files and that is how you choose what you want to keep and delete?
Thanks,
Whiteice

Most roms have their bloatware removed and usually gets put in a folder on your SD card so you can install what the rom dev removed.
If you install an OTA based rom it will usually have the stock apps with some of the useless ones removed.
But if you use an AOSP rom, like Cyanogen, there wont be any HTC or Sprint apps.
It's really up to the rom dev to decide what they want in their rom.
Once you flash the new rom you can use RootExplorer or ADB to delete those apps that you don't want.
Is that what you were asking?
Also I found another root method:
SuperOneClick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682

Yes I think you answered it. Now I just need to know how to root, and what to do when I root to load a custom rom. I also need to find out which rom would be best for me to start out with?
Again, I would like to be able to load some of the default bloatware and rid the rest and then load up some programs from the apps market.
Thank you again,
Whiteice

I would recommend rooting and exploring your current stock rom first untill you feel comfortable with installing a recovery, nandroid backing up, using the recovery to wipe/flashing the new rom.
When I first rooted my phone I was told to
spend a week reading how to root.
Root my stock rom.
Spend a week reading about new roms and how to flash and backup.
THEN try to flash a new rom.
Asking "Which rom is best" usually will get you flamed, It comes down to personal preference.
Here is the wiki of roms for the hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=CDMA_Hero_ROMs
First rom I flashed on my evo was a Fresh rom.
It's pretty stock with some tweaks done to it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681856
And hopefully someone will be able to answer which rooting method to use.

Ok, I like your idea about rooting with my stock rom first. I just need to figure out how now to root it.
I may be bugging you today if that is ok. You seem pretty helpful, and with doing something like this for your first time that you are not familiar with, well help is what I will need
I have also subscribed to your other thread you linked to. Hopefully something, at least for me, easy will come up to root my phone.
Thank you again for all your help,
Whiteice

Not a problem, I know where you're coming from. I was terrified to root when I first read about it.
I'll try my best to answer what I can.
And if Unrevoked works with the .7 version, It basically does everything for you so it's really simple.
If you can check your Radio Baseband version and it's one of these, unrevoked should work.
But we should wait for someone to confirm.
(Should be in Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> Software info)
HTC CDMA Hero, running radio baseband versions
1.04.01.09.21
2.41.04.02.02
2.42.01.04.23
2.42.01.04.27

Again, thank you for your time and patience. I really want to do this and want to do it right. If something would go wrong, I wouldn't know what to do.
My radio baseband version is 2.42.01.04.27
Will wait to hear back or see if anyone can confirm it working.
What is unrevoked? I am guessing it's kind of a "one click" type thing that will root the phone, or is it more then that?
Thank you,
Whiteice
*EDIT* So I read your link and read up on it a little. I have a basic understanding of what it does, but again, this is all new to me
You know, the more I think about it, the more I think it would be easier to ruu back to .5 and root from there. I know for a fact that unrevoked will root .5, as its the method I used. Also, I've heard good things about regaw's root, too.
Just follow the directions EXACTLY and you can't go wrong.

Whatever happened to reading and trying? More importantly just reading.

Okay, I wouldn't go off just radio versions...I would go off software versions.
I posted in the other thread of his and HAD recommended manually with ADB but now I would recommend using SuperOneClick. I've been searching google and it seems to be the more popular one. Have yet to read someone using Unrevoked.

I think you have to sign a "No reading" clause when you register here. Or at least just to post in the Hero section...

I appreciate it, thanks for the sarcasm guys.
The reading part has to do with how bad my ADHD is. Thus the reason why I am trying to find something a little easier and not so in depth.
But thanks again for the sarcasm. It's much appreciate being a noob and trying to find help.

ADHD, huh? Then you might be better off with a one click method. ADB method, while not difficult, requires a fair amount of reading and exact typing, or you get a hero shaped paperweight. Superoneclick seems to be the option of choice.

Yes, its very bad, especially when it comes to reading. It is very VERY frustrating when you want to be able to read something but you can't.
Back on topic, thank you for the advice. Now to try and find out which one click method would be best for my phone.
Thank you again for your help and understanding,

He must not have read it when he joined. Hypocrite.
My Evo made me Swype this from the XDA App.
Try the xda wiki page for the hero... has all good information linked in one place.
