Is there a good PDF viewer available that does not need to upload the pdf to a server to convert it first? All the pdf viewers on the market I've seen seem to upload the pdf to a server to parse/convert it.
This isn't an option for some of the confidential documents I get.
repligo reader
have you tried repligo reader yet because i got it and i have had no problems with it so far
Thanks. I took a look at it. Unfortunately there's no trial version to try out before I buy. Definitely want to try it before I pay $9.
WinMobile has a free version, MobileXPDF. It's great for reading PDFs. Good exact scaling, good speed, bookmarks, pdf to text, etc.
I realize the Android is relatively new so it doesn't have that many options yet. Maybe I'll check out the one that's on the HTC Magic.

The one that comes on the Magic is ok.
I second RepliGo Reader. Was the first app I purchased, and it has been well worth the money. Can't you buy it and then refund it if your don't like it?

hmm. I wasn't aware there was a refund option.
I read a good number of the comments for Repligo Reader and it seems like it's missing some key features such as good scaling and bookmarks. Is this accurate?
OffiViewer - quick server side conversions, also does Office docs.

It has support for native PDF bookmarks, but you cannot create manual ones - yet. Their support people are really quick in responding if you need help or have suggestions. It does remember where you were at in a PDF, so I guess it has "autoresume" but not manual bookmarks.
As for scaling...In "reading" mode, the zoom scales text AND images pefectly. I've had no problems reading PDFs with illustrations, and depending on where I'm reading - the text can be pretty small, or big. Also, rotating it gives a REALLY nice reading experience.
Here are some screenshots of it zoomed in all the way, and also zoomed out a bit (all in reading mode):

Thanks for the details. It was very helpful. I think I'll give the HTC pdf viewer a try for a few days. If I think it's ok and I need the bookmark/remember feature, I'll get Repligo.
I'm actually not even sure I'll be comfortable viewing stuff on the G1 3.2" screen. I used to use my PDA with 4" VGA screen to read pdfs on my commute. Definitely a big difference.

The Ipad has a great productivity app called Penultimate that allows you to make handwritten notes and sketches and store them in notebooks for later reference. You can also take quick snapshots of the notes and sketches and send them in emails.
See cocoabox.com for info.
Anyone know of a similar app for android? I especially like the notebook feature where you can create notebooks and add items to those notebooks over time.
Love the G-tab!
The closest app I have found is Sketchbook mobile... but is more of a drawing program than note taking.
Haven't found a true replacement yet...
I've been searching for notes apps, but have been failing miserably.
Looks like Phatware made an app for Android called WRITE PAD, but looks like it isn't that great.
I started using FlextT9, which is a keyboard replacement that has tap, slide, voice, and handwriting style keyboard, which is great. Still tough to take notes quickly with it, though.
I've been looking for an app like the you described, or NOTE PLUS, which is for the iPad. It looks like it's EXACTLY what I need, but nothing like it is out for Android yet.
http://notesplusapp.com/about/version-2-2-screenshot
I hope once the Motorola Xoom, and the slew of other tablets drop in the coming months, we'll see a boom in tablet optimized note taking apps. I have my fingers crossed.
yea its kinda disappointing how little note taking apps there are for android - if you guys know of any please post their names here at least,
once that htc tablet comes out that also uses a pen - i hope note taking apps become more popular, love the g-tab so far (except the sleep of death problem) but the htc tablet was what i was looking for, so hope it gets some good apps behind it
like just trying to keep score for dominoes is hard to do on the android - had to use office to go excel to do it
- as always thanks -
I agree, it's very disappointing.
Right now, I'm using a combination of Note Everything and Genial Writing for my hand written notes. Genial writing ALMOST does what I want it to do, but it lacks the ability to draw pictures mixed in with the hand writing notes, as it lines up your text. It's ALMOST passable ... almost.
I use Genial writing with evernote and like that so far. I just share the written note to evernote.
I am developing a penultimate like app for android. I need users to try it out before I send it out to market. please pm me if you can help me fix the bugs, improve it.
Check out TabNotes. It's the closest I've found so far.

How do I convert my notes to pdf for printing?
Another program that I am starting to like is Handrite. It gives you the ability to freehand draw and write but lacks the ability to categorize and tag.
I also like that you can type your headings and then write below.
Definitely worth a look.
Check out "PenSupremacy" It is a Penultimate clone.
It can convert your notes to PDF and send them through email,
and can share with other apps like evernote, facebook...

PenSupremacy is a very nice app. I downloaded it from the Market last night. It's certainly the best handwritten note taking app I've tried so far on the gtab and I've tried all of the other ones listed in this post. My only complaint is that I don't think the gtab's screen is sensitive or responsive enough (even with a stylus) to make it a true replacement for pen and paper when notes have to be taken quickly as in class or in a meeting. But it's only 99 cents and this is probably as close as you're gonna get to penultimate.
Try to use TabNotes.
I developed this app taking best of IPad app like Notes Taker HD or Penultimate.
There's a free trial version with all the features you can find in the full version (only limited number of pages and restrictive choice of papers).
I will be glad to hear about your feedback regarding it.
Eric
Sorry but so far everything has been a real dud. Nothing is optimized for honeycomb that looks even half way decent. Someone please make something.
Agree, I can't find anything that come close to working as a handwriting tool, I know I have a cheap stylus but I need to be able to rest my hand on the screen & then write, none of the apps seem to cope with this.
I am prepared to pay for a decent app, $0.99 is throw away money, if someone can actually come up with a decent app (like Penultimate or Bamboo Paper (Wacom)) then I will go for it.
Right now I feel a bit sad that I can't write on my EeePad.

Uh... memo, the ipad can't account for your hand resting on the screen either.

Pensupremacy and tabnotes are great apps. I tested them out last night and wow they were great!
Bought them both, btw.
There are a few apps on the iPad that attempt palm detection so you can rest your hand on the screen while using a stylus. See the end of the video on this page:
http://notesplusapp.com/
Integrating this sort of detection would greatly increase the usability of these apps.

this is not my app, but i never saw it here and a search didnt pop it up, so maybe some of you dont know it. i dont see why ms would bann it, but yeah, if you interrested in the story check his website:
http://smartypantscoding.com/R_I_P_-Imagewind-for-Windows-Phone
but i love the app!
design is perfect
function is always good to kill some minutes
basicly it will show you all pictures that are posted on twitter at the moment.
it does that with sleek animations and you can always digg deeper into the content.
where the picture can be viewed like you would want it on a touchscreen.
one more time i have to say, awesome design!
not like those "i just started programming 99cent apps"
this is really worth checking out, only available via xap sideload...
download here:

also dont miss the silverlight webapp over here:
http://imagewind.net/
awesome stuff!!!
this is cool! thanks. i dont like twitter but i like this haha
oh good i've found it, thanks! works perffect!
app slowed to a crawl
Have been using this app for around a month now and i must say its great fun, almost hypnotic. However yesterday the picture generation started to run slowly, then crawl, now it takes around 5 mins per line to populate.
So has anyone else experienced this behaviour from the app? does anybody know if the development is still going with the app or if there is a newer version than the one posted here?
FYI i have uninstalled the app and reinstalled to no avail and i have tried to contact the developer via the web page comments section but the Capture window does not work and so i cannot leave a comment.
Any help would be appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Creamy
I can't download the xap file.
There you go:
OK so I have no idea if SmartyPantsCoding is still supporting this, but the app has slowed down because it can't see most of the image URLs on twitter anymore.
Twitter has started shortening ALL URLs on it's service automatically using the t.co service. This means the app cant search the timeline for items with pictures in them (at least not without some re-coding) tho for some unknown reason, tweetphoto links still work. These might be the only links twitter doesn't shorten.
This sucks for us who liked the phone app (and the website imagewind.net) but it means Twitter can now get analytics info, which I gather they have now made available......
nice App
Thanks

Kind Regards,

Anyone happen to have a version 1.2 xap ? Ver 1.1 doesn't work, and 1.3 (above) doesn't support Twitter.
1.2 is supposed to do both Twitter & Flickr. I'm not sure it's past the url issues that broke 1.1, just thought I'd ask if it's out there. Thanks.
EDIT: The above xap does have an option in setting to switch to "unsafe" mode, which pulls pics from Twitter. Works flawlessly. My bad.
thanks, great find!
I've been working on this app for a month or so after seeing the sorry state of Honeycomb ready apps, I hope you guys like it!

This is a really cool app! Only thing I would like to see is working video and zooming of images without jumping to browser.
Aside from that, my productivity has now gone down significantly while away from my desk. So I suppose you could call this a ... success?
Glad you like it! I'm not sure if I can do anything about videos not loading (I think thats just a limitation of not being directly in-browser), but I'm investigating not being able to zoom images and will aim to get it fixed!

I'm ok with not being able to view video's (I just click open in browser and then choose Youtube for the youtube links). However whenever I do that and come back to Reddita the right pane still shows the non-working youtube video, but the left pane loses my place with the links. So I have to scroll all the way back down to wherever I was (sometimes I don't remember how far I was down). Is there a way to come back to Reddita exactly like I left it?
Thanks!
Great App!
Edit: It does it if I follow any link out of Reddita

Thank you for this app, really liking it. However, here are some suggestions:
When watching a video in full screen and enlarging it, the video is not centered but shifted to the right or to the bottom (depending on the aspect ratio of the video)
There should be an option to resume playback
Could you add an option to disable the flipping of the application tile?
Oh yes, and the possibility to download videos would be great!
Keep up the good work

If he's pulling it out of the marketplace there's no reason to comply with the ToS
I think it would have to be either NetSurf or a terminal browser, like links, w3m, lynx or elinks. Firefox is a sinking ship and so is any forks of it and Chrome is obviously not safe, but the best fork of it would be Ungoogled-Chromium, which even then that's not saying it's foolproof, because of the massive codebase that comes with Chromium and the fact that Google is still being supported by proxy. Pale Moon is starting to head in the wrong direction also, and smaller projects like Otter Browser and Suckless Surf, while promising, suffer from small dev teams, little to no addon support and lack their own engines and instead rely on Goooooogle and Crapple instead. But even then, you would have to wean yourself off of the modern web and stick to websites like neocities or wiby.me if you were to use stuff like NetSurf or elinks.
Also, what about email? I'd try RiseUp or Disroot w/ GPG encryption using the Claws webmail client w/ KeePassX or KeePassXC for generating email passwords stored on a removable drive. Although I heard self-hosting is also decent. Which is better?

Thank you for posting this and letting me know about Brave Private Web Browser, I was using Google Chrome then Samsung Internet prior to this. And honestly, I feel like I really missed out for a long time, thinking Samsung Internet sucked when I knew nothing about how it worked. I prefer it now, but I'll start using the Brave Browser as my default browser from now on.

You're welcome. Welcome to XDA
Samsung is good for vids if you add some ad blockers from the Galaxy store. Just mind the download folder for unauthorized downloads.
Had a trojan preloader slip by Samsung somehow. It died in that folder
When in doubt try to back out of a bad website, if that fails close the browser tab, if that fails close the browser. If all that fails clear cache. If nothing gets it go full nuke and clear browser data. For over 2 years nothing has made it in again... I check the download folder at least once a day nonetheless.
Brave gets tarded with vids on the borders and I like multiple browsers anyway. The Samsung browser I have more configured for streaming vids. Brave is better for surfing, it's pretty much bullet proof; nothing has ever slipped by it.

Thank you for all your help, I'll be sure to remember that process in case I fall into a hole like that again.
Lol.

I'm spilling black coffee as I post
I feel a thread merge a-coming. Or post like the sharks fed; thread frenzy! Or like free ranging long horns graze... those other browser threads were getting like bathroom wallpaper anyway.
