I've had my Kaiser a few days now, here's a few problems that i've had... anyone had anything similar?
- Windows Live Today addon stops working... can't scroll left or right
- HTC plugin goes fuzzy... can go into programs/settings, but nothing actually loads up when clicking on it
- After using the phone, the screen goes dim... so i have to manually reset the brightness
- D-pad stops working after using the phone (can't scroll through TXTs/Emails etc)
In most cases i have to reboot to fix :S
I was hoping WM6 would be a lot stabler... but so far it doesn't seem all that great :S
Hi,
I haven't had the problems you have, not even heat yet as has been discussed. Perhaps it's because I am not taxing the unit yet.
However, I have not been able to synch my PC to the Kaiser to yet. Synching pictures, music, TV is not an issue because Windows Media Player is working. It's the Contacts, Notes, Tasks that I cannot synch.
When I open the Windows Mobile Device Center the Connection Settings window opens up with the Allow USB & Bluetooth Connections radio buttons. When I hit OK with both Radio buttons selected (USB & Bluetooth), that's it, the window closes and there's no Windows Mobile Device Center that opens up. Task Manager shows no open Windows Mobile Device Center application but does show a Windows Mobile Device Center process, wmdcBase.exe.
What am I missing here? Please help, 4 days & I still do not have my Contacts in this phone.
This is a duplicate post from lower down.
Cheers,
Phil

Screen goes dim and the start menu does not work. This is because of the password pin set on your phone. If you deactivate it, it should be fine. It's definitely a bug on the Kaiser. There are registry hacks for this, but I have no idea how to get around it.
regarding the screen dimming, I assume this is with the HTC ROM.
My phone has been fine with the latest two AT&T ROMs (the first ROM had this prob, the screen would dim after 10 seconds). You can temporarily fix the problem by resetting the Backlight timeout Settings.. Backlight... Battery Power tab) to something like 1 minute. It will keep getting reset every once in a while though... You can also turn off the backlight timeout completely (unchecking the box), which seems to work longer.
BTW it seems to be a problem with the HTC Home plugin. When I installed the original AT&T ROM but didn't install the HTC Home today plugin, the problem did not happen.
I have seen the D-Pad problem in Outlook only - that is, hang up a call, then d-pad doesn't work to navigate thru email. Once email is open the D-Pad works... Solution is to kill (click x button) Outlook.

Same here, screen dims and startmenu does not work. Issue is I can't deactivate pw (corp security pollicy for pushmail client).
Could someone elaborate a bit on the possible reg hack that could fix this?
Thanks...
Hi
I made a small app that helps overcome this issue by making the phone usable again after a phone call.
You can get install instructions from here with a file a few posts down: http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=258974&view=findpost&p=841951
Hopefully it will be fixed by HTC soon so it's just a short term work around.
Regards
Phil
Thanks
That works, thank you very much for your effort!
We'll wait for the HTC fix.

You need Outlook installed to sync those.
Add this - SMS goes bust!
Details are here:

i had a 3g connection with google maps running in background (gps was accurate within 10 feet) and was playing namco's ms. pac-man on the tytn ii rom when device locked up mid game. Power button would put phone into standby, but it was locked up besides. i had to soft-reset.
Cool, do HTC release updated ROMs via their website?
Also, ive had the home plugin going fuzzy and locking up quite a few times now.... definitley more problems introduced since i enabled the 'lock' feature :S
No call button??
On the dialpad is no call button only videocall button???
Am i blind?........
With my phone the 'ok' button (not on the keyboard) doesn't always respond (well). Either to confirm a adjustment or to minimize/close an screen
I have found a pretty simple workaround for the issue with the screen going dim and the start menu not working after a call.
What appears to be happening is that the device is actually locking the screen yet the keypad to unlock is not displayed. So the start menu and such think they are locked. I found that if i simply power my device off and back on the password screen/unlock screen shows up. Unlock it and you are fine from there.
Not really a fix but it will save you a reboot.
Hmm im getting lots of sync problems with Windows Live :S, also my phone 'says' it's connected to 3G/H but then randomly doesnt send texts :S
Really starting to annoy me now!
I've been playing with my Kaiser and these are the last remaining bugs that I can't figure out:
1. No Data while using Voice. See thread in this forum for other's complaints.
2. Phone does not wakeup when a email is received. I tried following other's advice by installing Spb time, and enabling "Wakeup Tweak" and this had no effect. Phone plays notification sound, but still is sleep.
3. Phone locks keys and sleeps while talking. On my 8125 with WM5, the phone would turn off the display, but would wake up with any key press while in the call. This is kind of handy in case I want to see another call come in, go to speaker phone, mute, etc. Right now, I need to hit the power button.
4. Menu's in messaging are really annoying. It would be wonderful if there was a way to modify the menu's in messaging. In SMS/MMS the New Menu Item is actually another menu where the first item is "Multimedia message". There are other things I find annoying.
Other than these annoyances, I think the phone is really doing great.

You may not have 3g in your area, or your provider requires UMTS which you
can enabled by installing the Kaiser Tweak program.
2. Phone does not wakeup when a email is received. I tried following other's advice by installing Spb time, and enabling "Wakeup Tweak" and this had no effect. Phone plays notification sound, but still is sleep.
I like this effect since it doesn't waste battery. I'm not sure how to fix this one

Turn off fast sleep, use kaiser tweak to disable.

1. I guess from what others are saying you have to be in the HSPDA area.
2. I guess I never realized it but mine doesn't either, be nice if it were an option but I don't know if it is.
3. These are reg settings, install the reg tweaks sticky above
4. I don't quite understand what you looking for or what is the problem.
Thanks for the reply exstatica.
I have kaiser tweak installed.
For #1, which option is this exactly, I'm not seeing what option you explain.
For #3, I have "Fast Screen Off" = Disabled (Advised)
jallenclark,
If you go into Messaging and then your Outlook E-Mail account, you will notice the Menu has "MMS Options" as the last item in the menu. On 8525, WM6, "Send/Receive" was the last option. It was nice that this was the last item. Why "MMS Option" need to be on the Email account, I have no idea.
If you go into Messaging and then you MMS/SMS account, the Menu Has a New Menu Item, then two sub-items. This isn't out it use to be.
I wish there was a way to modify these items.
I think it is near the top of the tweak program, it is called Fast Sleep.
I see what you mean about the Send/Receive and I agree completely. I am sure it would be possible to switch the order of the buttons but I don't know how to program it. I went from 8125 and it was similar to this the send/recieve was 3 up on the list.
I had 0.3 of KaiserTweak, current version 0.4 has the option you were talking about. Duh moment on my part
The Kaiser has voice and data at the same time as long as you are in a 3g area.
I can stream live TV from my media center pc using webguide4 and as long as the icon shows the "H" symbol for HSDPA then I can make and recieve calls while the video streams. The audio on the video is muted until I hang up the phone but the video is still playing non the less. If I do not have the "H" icon then this will not work.
This is not a problem with the phone it is the way the technology works. Be thankful, this is only with GSM providers. Meaning that this is not even an option with the best service area with Sprint and Verizon.
I get over 100 emails a day in my line of job, if the "feature" you describe existed (wake up on email) the first thing I'd look for is how to turn it off... My Hermes did the same BTW, you hear the sound, but the units remains in standby mode.

Not quite sure what you mean but if you are wanting a send a sms you can always set one of the softkeys to "New SMS" meaning you only need to click one button to compose a sms.

fast sleep makes my tilt (kaiser, 8925, varioIII) respond incorrectly.
fast sleep is a good idea conceptually but while it saves battery power, when i wake up my phone in call or after the call is over, It makes most of the home screen and the soft buttons unresponsive. I can usually fix this by putting it to sleep and waking it up one more time. Sometimes when this happens the backlight comes on only very dim. I dont see a setting for the fast sleep while in a call. Here are some steps i have tried to resolve this issue.
tried to remove all items from home screen
chose to not show owner info or notes when turning on device.
Changed power settings to not turn off device.
changed backlight to always stay on for testing.
told the device to not lock after no usage.
problem existed before i unlocked the device.
Any Ideas?

I'm still annoyed that unlocking the phone (as in, unlock when it comes out of suspend with a pin, not sim unlocking) requires you to hit UNLOCK when you type in the pin, instead of the old way where the phone unlocks when you hit the last digit.
I'd still love some way to change it back.

Is it just me or is the Tytn II's speaker behaves differently to the original Tytn and D810?
1. Go to the phone keypad, try dial a string of number quickly, the speaker will start to pop as it can not play the key sound fast enough.. This has never been a problem with my 838 Pro or D810.
2. Make the Tytn II to play a sound, after it finishes listen carefully for a noise that appears to be the speaker turning off, it seems like after a sound is played the speaker's power is continuously on for a few seconds before switching off. Again this is different and unnoticeable on the 838 Pro or D810.
happens to me too.

I get the popping. It sounds like its making the speaker clip. I didnt get it until i changed to a cooked rom. IMHO, all cooked roms have bugs....but i would gladly settle for all of the worst bugs in the cooked roms over using the att tilt rom which was loaded with bloatware, fastsleep, proxy, crappy camera, crappy softkeyboard, etc.. etc.. etc... I really dont think its the speaker. I think its the rom. Backup and try a different one if you feel like testing.
Thanks,

I am running the stock tilt rom, the only thing i have loaded that deals with the sound at all that i know of is the HTC home plug in.
Randomly - at least i can't pick up a pattern, my phone is changing from sound on mode to silent/ vibrate/ sound off mode.
the plug in will still show that sound on mode is selected, but the icon at the top of the home screen shows vibrate and i have to click it to turn the sound on.
Other than casper - anyone have any ideas of how to fix or stop this?
as a side note, i have found one of the shortcomings so far of switching to the full PPC phone as the lack of sound profiles.
thanks - this forum is amazing.

No idea. That always happened with HTC Home Plugin installed on my E-Ten, but I've never found a solution. I have no problems with it on my Kaiser.
EDIT: Is it happening when you have an active appointment?
If you set the HTC home profile tab to AUTO, it will change it to silent for when your calendar shows busy.
Try a) setting phone to ringer on (with the volume icon at the top) and then b) setting the HTC profile to Ringer on.
Then try setting it to vibrate etc and it should change and then stay there.
Otherwise there are a few good profile apps you can install.
Here's what i think. Unwired's post is spot on. The HTC Home plugin has the lite profile tab that let's you choose, "sound on", "silent", "vibrate", or "auto".
"Auto" will toggle automatically between "sound" and "vibrate" based on meetings in your calendar. When you are in a meeting, it goes to "vibrate". when you aren't, it sets it to "sound".
now, this function seems to work well on the Kaiser/TyTN II. BUT, in previous incarnations of this plug in, esp in the "cooked" WM6 ROMs for older devices like the Hermes/8525/TyTN I, this didn't quite work well. It was a well documented Notifications Queue-related bug.
But, again, the Kaiser doesn't seem to have this issue. At least no one has reported it. So, double check to make sure you don't have the "Auto" mode selected. And if you still see the "random" behavior, you would be the first person having such an issue on a Kaiser that I've heard of.

I just noticed having this problem as well. I do think it happens when I am in an active appointment, but it shouldn't be happening because I had the profile set to Loud not Auto. Any thoughts?
Check out the second post from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334704
rzanology says that the HTC Home 6 button version (the one that comes on the stock kaiser) will cause the Tilt to randomly switch to vibrate. So he recommended installing the cab file I attached to this post instead. The 2drawbacks to using the HTC Home cab I attached are: (1) you only have 3 tabs to work with (home, weather, launcher), not 6 (home, weather, launcher, favorite people, music and profile) and (2) the HT Home customizer by emunutz (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319308 ) does not work with it.
I'm affraid rzanology was right. i pout the 6 button version on my phone the other day and now i'm missing calls right and left. i wish there was a cab to fix this.
I have the ATT Tilt, original ROM and installed the 6 button home plugin. I DO experience the random switch to vibrate. It happens a few times a day and is really annoying! I love some of the extra buttons on the 6 button home plugin and would hate to go back to the 3 button plugin. If anyone finds a solution to this please please please post it back here!
Thanks
OK, so, on the stock TyTN II (unlocked Kaiser, not the Tilt), the HTC Home is built into the ROM and I don't have the issue. So, those of you who have the Tilt, the HTC Home was not installed by default and you had to add it? If so, then maybe its to do with the version being installed? Or did the HTC Home come installed on the Tilt by default?
My phone is an ATT locked TILT model, I had to install the HTC Home plugin. If anyone knows if there is a version of the home plugin that does not have the vibrate issue, please let me know. I just uninstalled the plugin and am trying a different build to see if that helps. Now I have to re-customize...bummer...
I used Kaiser.HTC.Home.v2.0.814.722-schen.cab on my Orange Tytn 2 and havent had a problem with it.
(On my old Hermes with the black majik rom it would sometimes switch to between profiles when I looked at appointments.)
i dont know whats causign it, it use to happen on my 8525 as well....drove me up the wall!!!!! Odly enough, when the cooks cooked it into their roms it never happened. I even tried using the same exact version as one cooked into a rom and it still happened!
I'm going to dig through the forums and try to find the version you are referring to, as long as its the 6 button version I'm all for it. the one I just tried HTC.Kaiser.Home.Eng.0409.6Tab.schen.cab still has the vibrate issue. I will post back if the version you are mentioning works.
I am experiencing this issue and I have an HTC Kaiser and am running the stock HTC rom. The way that I would describe my issue is that randomly (at least I can't determine a pattern) the PDA volume and ring volume become muted when I have the 'normal' ring profile selected in the sound manager tab. I do not use the 'auto' profile and it does not happen when I have appointments in my calendar. Any one have any ideas?
I appear to have fixed the problem <knock on wood> with the latest version of HTC Home as long as I eliminate the Profiles tab.
i have the same issue with stock HTC rom. weird. didn't had this problem till i played around with the htc customizer(which doesn't work), s2u2 and Indibar
I got mine fixed by uninstalling the older version of htc home i had. I downloaded the customizer and let the customizer download the latest version of the htc home.
The one i originally got must have been one of the older versions that had problems
real annoying problem, have yet to find any solution to this
i have the opposite problem...it's on silent and i haven't touched my phone in hours, then suddenly i hear my phone ringing! it is quite embarassing when i expect it to be on silent.
I'm having this problem with my Tilt (factory ROM), where it automatically switches to Vibrate, here's what I've noticed:
I had HTC Home installed for a few days without the problem, it seemed to start only after I used the profiles tab for the first time. I don't know which version of HTC Home I installed, but most of the files in the .CAB are dated 6/21/2007, a few are 7/23/2007.
Sometimes the icon in the title bar changes to the little PDA with vibrating lines, but even worse sometimes the icon still shows the speaker but if I click on it it's set to Vibrate, so I can't just rely on a visual check.
I've tried a few things to fix this, nothing worked yet. I used the Notifications tab in FdcSoft Task Manager 2.7 to look through all the Notification events, nothing jumped out at me. So I used the Services tab to temporarily stop the Notify service, but the problem still happened while the service was stopped.
I stopped the only two services with HTC in the name, HtcServices(HSV2 and HTC Generic Service(HGS0. But the problem still happened.
Another strange thing I noticed, when I open Calendar and create a New Appointment about 2 minutes in the future (with a status of busy), immediately when I click OK, the phone switches to Vibrate. Same thing if I edit the appointment for a new time in the future.
Still loooking... but I'm about ready to just uninstall HTC Home.
I tried the "dubai" version and the "chinese" version.
With no other programs installed, pressing the off button will briefly turn the screen off, but it will come back within moments.
Worse yet, the keyguard only guards the keys, not the screen.
Has anyone else experienced this?
At what level are you using the backlight?
If I'm correct you have to stay above 40%. It is an old WM bug.
hmm, the thing is, it's not just the backlight, but also the touch itself. besides, the problem was there without installing/changing any programs or settings.
when keyguard is activated, it only guards the physical keys, not the touch screen. this means i can poke around even when the keyguard is supposedly activated.
i have this same problem, keyguard not turned off screen, its all the time on even show is locked
version of software is 1.12-vfu

TomTom v7.450
Diamond ROM v1.37.405.1 WWE
Can anyone else confirm that their backlight never turns off whilst using TomTom, regardless of what setting/timeout they've got on the device's Power config page? Whether I'm using it on battery or mains the result is the same - backlight remains on continuously. If I shut TomTom down I then see normal behaviour and the light turns off after the set time.
Interestingly, if I install the very same TomTom CAB on my M600/Prophet it behaves correctly i.e. the backlight turns off after a time. The device remains continuously on, regardless of setting, but then that's what I'd hope for anyway as TomTom is no use if the device is not active.
Given the above, has anyone got any ideas as to why this might be the case, and what I might be able to do to solve it? I really want the backlight to dim as it will save a considerable amount of battery should I be using TomTom on battery... and it would automatically turn it back on when it comes to advised turns etc.
Incidentally, the backlight does dim/brighten in response to changes in the ambient light level so that's at least something - however I tried removing this setting in case that was the problem but it wasn't.
Mathew
I also use TOM TOM on my Diamond..and I think that is normal that the backlight is on when using the navigato..also if you use the Stand Alone navigator the back ligt stays on!
I can't see the use of the navigator with the device in standby..you should buy a car charger so your battery recharge during the utilization of navigator

I have a question, can this problem co-exist with the problem of backlight turning off too fast when making a call, or do these two problems cancel each other ?

this is a feature (and a good one) and not a bug. i bet you don't want that when driving, right before a big intersection yr screen go off....
for example, the igo (that's what i am using) give you the option to go by the device or all time on.

If it was a feature I would expect it to manifest itself when installed on both the Diamond and the Prophet (given the common application) - the fact it doesn't suggests to me it is a 'quirk' (not necessarilly a bug) with the way it works on the Diamond. As mentioned, the backlight used to come back on when being advised of any directions etc and would remain until well clear of a junction so if it is a feature it's an unnecessary one!
Sometimes it is not convenient for me to use external power - when riding on my bike for example. And in such circumstances the high ambient light level used to be plenty sufficient for me to see the screen on the Prophet without the backlight being on - this is obviously great for conserving battery power as the light ranks as one of the highest power consumers.
I might see if the TomTom menu is still customisable and, if so, include the 'Backlight Preferences' icon that was present in versions of Navigator prior to v6.

interesting! didn't know that...doesn't bother the on\off of the screen while navigating in town (lots of instructions)? not sure i'll want all this flickering
Solved it!
In fairness, it seems that it is a TomTom quirk.
Specifically, the application has always (since I've been using it from v5) had a built-in setting for when to turn the backlight the backlight off (or, more accurately, when to allow the device to turn it off in accordance with your time setting) - the options being: 'Always', 'When on a walking route', 'When not charging' or 'Never'. The default being 'Never'.
However, since v6 the button to change this setting disappeared from the menus however given it is possible to customise the TomTom menus and, even better, to include icons from previous versions of TomTom (assuming the feature is still supported internally) I did the following to turn my backlight setting to 'When not charging'...
- Create a file \TomTom\SDKRegistry\TomTom.mnu in the root of the device
- Inside this file put the following:
Code:
MENUBLOCK|BLOCK_MAIN|BTM_DONE|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE1|Main Menu|
MENUITEM|TASK_EXIT_APP|
MENUITEM|TASK_SET_BACKLIGHT|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE1|
- Now run TomTom and click the main screen - up will come a menu with two items in it - Exit and Backlight Preferences, the latter will allow you to configure exactly how you want the backlight to behave.
- Quit TomTom and delete the TomTom.mnu file - this will revert you back to the stock menus, but with the backlight setting (permanently) set.
Of course, this process can be used to configure your menus exactly how you want them however I don't know the keys for all the icons - only for those when I last dabbled in v5 - maybe if I can find some time I'll find the others (I haven't Google for them so perhaps these are now common knowledge) such as the MapShare functions that only came in v7.
The reason it the backlight worked as I wanted when installing the cab on my Prophet was because it still had my menu configs from v5 installed on it... d'oh!
I could be alone in wanting to be able to choose how the backlight is managed, but just in case there's someone with the same desire hopefully this'll be some use to you. It does of course beg the obvious question - why did TomTom remove this customisable feature?!
Cheers,
Mathew
youupy! drinks on you!
congrats and yes, i knew from the beginning that i can help you. dhaaaahh. lol!
Interesting, previous versions of tomtom allowed you to adjust the backlight settings within the application.
cant find it in TT7 though

On the contrary; they've handled it handle it very well.
Say you've got your backlight timeout set to 30 seconds then after this amount of time with no activity (direction instructions etc) it will turn the backlight off - you can still see the map outline in ambient light and, most importantly, can easily see the distance indicator to the next direction.
A few seconds prior to the next instruction the light will reilluminate, a few seconds later it will give the direction advice/distance etc and then once you're through the junction it will turn the light off again after 30 seconds.
Of course, when following a rapid series of instructions in, say, a built-up area then the backlight will stay on continuously - each instruction essentially resets the timer. It's only when out on the 'open road' with no isntructions for miles that you'd see the effect.
All said and done, when I've got access to external power I keep the backlight on constantly (that's where the 'Extinguish only when not charging' option comes in) but when I'm running on batteries I need all the power-saving I can get, not least given the limit battery capacity in the Diamond!

As mentioned they dropped the icon in v6 yet still supported the functionality internally - it's just that with no icon you can't change the setting hence the temporary icon-insertion method discussed above.
