Hey guys im looking to root my G1 (UK) am i safe to do it even though ive recently updated and my build number is CRC1? im really wanting my phone to appear to have the hero interface so am i correct in thinking that i just need to root it, apply Cyanogen's Recovery and then run the latest JAChero ROM? thanks - Adam
You'll have to downgrade to RC7, then root, then update your radio, then update your SPL, then update your ROM.

If you follow that guide you won't have any issues. Just take your time to read it all first while you download the required files. Familiarise yourself with the steps then just take your time with it.
Quick update, everything went well and im more that happy its like having a new phone - Thanks guys
- just wondering can i now format my memory stick to get rid of all the files i put on it or are there things on it that will stop my phone from running root and roms? - Thanks - Adam

You can go ahead and format your SD card, there is nothing on there that gives root "permissions". Make sure you only format the FAT32 partition though and not the EXT partition because you will lose Apps 2 SD if you did that step already. If you didn't partition your SD card yet in preparation for your Hero build, and have no idea what I'm talking about, you can still format it and not lose root or ROMS lol
I have a crc1 version, but i don't know which version if UE or US. Immagine US because is from there. The procedure is the normal one, installing the RC29 or RC7? Which one of thos i have to install, the RC29 or the RC7?
Thanks a lot in advance.

hey guys i'm trying to root my phone first time
i've moved DREAIMG.NBH, recovery.img and update.zip to sd card and then turn off my phone. Then i hold camera button and press power button to entry bootloader mode and i got the message checking.......and then "not allowed"
where's the problem,
i have CRC1 firmware 1.5, Germany T-mobile
^ try doing the .nbh file by itself first, on your SD card that is formatted to Fat32. Then reboot, delete this file from your SD, then add the other files to the SD card. Follow the guide, it will not fail you.
with that said, you should find cyanogens image file... it is pretty awesome. ver 1.4.
nothing again,
i did as you said and again i've got messag. when reboot "not allow"
here is spec:
DREA110 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.96.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
whats the next, can u help me?
did you get the correct .nbh file (RC29 is for the US only, RC7 is for the UK)
Did you format your SD card using your computer to FAT32?
Did you copy the correct .nbh file to the SD card (that was blank... no folders, nothing on it)?
:edit added:
Just saw the other info you posted... have you already installed the new radio and SPL? I do not know if the order of things matter.... but it does not follow the instructions for rooting. If you have already done that, you may need to look for the more experienced people on here to chime in.

RC8 or RC9 are just updated RC7 w/ the root exploit fixed ( its like RC30 for the US)
You may have to try the GoldCard Method

Could we get a developer's take on this issue?

Like he said, its just not possible. The things that need to be modified reside on root-only access folders. So without root access, we aren't allowed to touch these directories and files required to move everything to the sdcard. Its one the incentives of rooting your phone.

Instead of throwing JF's on your card as update.zip just put the hero 3d on as update.zip and flash. Have to make sure to have the new spl and new radio if your going to do any hero build. And read drizzy's page to see the requirements for setting up your sd card. Easy stuff.
Is the spl and radio all the same from any source?

You need the new radio and spl to load hero.
http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
Here is the radio and new spl. If your going to do this make sure you FLASH RADIO FIRST and then spl, otherwise you'll end up with a paperweight. After you flash the spl you phone will stay stuck at g1 screen. You will then need to take your card out and put it in a card reader and load up your rom and flash and you done.
honestly man, if your rooting/flashing for the first time, i would go with a stable build for a little while that you wont have to partition, linux-swap, etc. at least for a little while just to get used to it...
i know hero is tempting and the devs have done an AMAZING job of optimizing the hell out of it. but if you looked at the threads to root and thought that was tricky then just get used to it for a while before moving to non-stable/experimental type roms.

I have jf 1.5.
I dont have root anymore.
I want jf 1.51
and I want root.
I cannot format my card to fat32 vista won't let me.
Just follow this again, and you will be fine. I have lost root doing various things playing with my phone. Everytime, I have had to start over and drop the phone back down to RC29 and redo it. Follow the directions to the letter and you will be fine. Then grab the JF 1.51 and apply it.
alternatively, you could just download Harry_M's kernel and it will give you root back again. You just need to rename to update.zip and flash (at least that is what I did). Although, I must warn you, I was running a stock adp1 at the time...so I'm not responsible if it doesn't work right.
I lost root with the crc1 update, and this fixed mine.
Here is the file.
Use ubuntu for partitioning your sd card. Can't go wrong with that. Tut in my sig
after you root it "install recovery" dont flash rc33, just flash cyans 3.9.2 and upgrade ur recovery to 1.4 and your radio also.

I was just wondering the same thing. The guys question was how does he get root back. He never said he wanted to switch ROMS.
I just have one question before i start hacking. I have a 4gb card, but im about to get a 16gb card soon. You think I should wait until i get the 16gb card and hack it??? And would the phone still be rooted if I were 2 change the memory sticks??? Would i have to partition the 16 gb card also??
Waiting is up to u. As for any memory card yes u should partition them. If u can get a class 6 card its faster so it will help reduce the lag. If u dnt wait it will be hard without unbuntu to pull the apps and dalvik off the partition
Also no if if u switch the sd after root u will not lose it.
Edit: I'm late.
ok, soo im going to wait. any recommended roms i should try???
try reading a how-to,
cynagon is usually the rom to go with,
i think there is a database of all the roms that compares them too

Are you just trying to format to fat32 on your pc or are you wanting all the partitions (fat32, ext2/3/4, and linux-swap). Have you tried any of the commands in terminal? Have you tried Ubuntu? There is a tut in my sig on how to do it.
Try using a card reader instead of the phone. My wife's G1 does this for some reason. Mine doesn't however, not sure why cause I have a card reader and it was easier to do that than to figure it out.
Well I was looking at the ultimate noob thread about how to root. I pretty much want to use themes on here and also use custom boot logo's and things like that. But no matter what computer I try it says to insert a disk. I don't have a card reader on my computer. I'm just trying to format it to fat32 as of right now. Then after I do that I should be able to follow the instructions to root my phone.

Nevermind guys, I noticed under "build number" it says CRC1. I have tried to format my sdcard on my computer and it says enter disk, I've tried rooting it through other videos I've watched and nothing. I guess I won't be able to get it to work after all. Thanks though guys for your help!
i recently upgraded my OS to android 2.3.3 from a website i found on here. it works fine and all but i was wondering since i have never really done any rooting or anything, and i was wondering how i would go about possibly adding a different ROM to my phone or if i have to take my phone all the way back to stock before i do it? Also since im a noob and all, i will need step by step directions on how to do it. i already have odin3 on my computer and used it to get my 2.3.3 update. is there a way to over lay 2.3.4 or any further update they might come out with and how would i do that? also my 2.3.3 update didnt really take any of the bloatware out or anything. i know taking it out makes the phone's speed faster and all, that might be something i'd like to look into doing. really any help from you more experienced ppl would help me out awesomely.
if u need my phone's upgrade info it is:
Samsung SGH-I897
firmware is 2.3.3
baseband : I897UCKF1
kernal : 2.6.35.7-I897UCKF1-CL273832
build number : Gingerbread.UCKF1
are you trying to format it via usb while it is still in your phone?? lol you dont 'have to' format your sd card to root device... you can format it after installing a custom recovery,
it just says to format it at first because if you flash a custom rom, there will be files on your sd card from 1.5ota and might mess with rom... so just format it after you flash the custom recovery
