See what second part? Your ext partition. When you need to ask a question you need to be specific and give details.

Before I hack....

I just have one question before i start hacking. I have a 4gb card, but im about to get a 16gb card soon. You think I should wait until i get the 16gb card and hack it??? And would the phone still be rooted if I were 2 change the memory sticks??? Would i have to partition the 16 gb card also??
Waiting is up to u. As for any memory card yes u should partition them. If u can get a class 6 card its faster so it will help reduce the lag. If u dnt wait it will be hard without unbuntu to pull the apps and dalvik off the partition
Also no if if u switch the sd after root u will not lose it.
Edit: I'm late.
ok, soo im going to wait. any recommended roms i should try???
try reading a how-to,
cynagon is usually the rom to go with,
i think there is a database of all the roms that compares them too

When I try to format the disk on my computer, it disconnects and it says "There is no disk in drive G, enter a disk and try again". Also, when i connect my G1 to my computer, it says "Scan and Fix", or "Continue without scanning" and when i try to Scan and fix, it also disconnects the G1. What seems to be the problem??
Can't i just format the card using a card reader, then move onto rooting it???

Just do it in windows with it inside your phone...
[EDIT:] Didn't read enough. Yes you should be able to use a card reader to format.
Ok, this is my last concern, and i will stop bugging you guys. Soo far, i've successfully rooted the phone, flashed the radio(it now says 2.22.19.26I), and i flashed SPL. Everything with the phone is fine. My question is, do i have to flash the radio and spl everytime i want to flash a rom??? or do i flash the spl and then flash the rom???
never mind guys. im officially running cyanogen on the phone. looks good soo far. thanks 4 all the help

If you've already flashed the Radio/Spl, then all's you need to concern yourself with is roms, since the Radio/Spl stay even after the recovery alt w. You are done flashing the Radio/Spl, until Donut?

G1 to Hero Firmware?

I haven't messed with root or any type of firmware in a while.
I have a G1 with firmware 1.5 CRB43 and kernel 2.6.27.24.
I was wondering about that new HERO firmware that was released recently that is supposedly really fast, is it possible to flash this onto a G1? Does anyone here use it, if so how do I upgrade to it.
I find the android development section really messy and hard to understand, there is so many versions of everything and its pretty overwhelming - if anyone could help it would be appreciated

Yes this is possible. I'm currently running JACxHEROSki-v1.8 with no problems, other than typical HERO issues. [No Blue Tooth] Make sure you do your research.
I. 3 Part partition your sd card. (FAT32, EXT3/EXT4, Linux-Swap 64 or 96MB)
II. Install latest Radio
III. Install latest SPL
IV. Wipe Phone
V. Install Hero Rom
VI. Bliss!

you're last step is so optimistic. you might want to include though that if there was a cupcake rom installed and a2sd was previously running that a wipe of the ext3 is needed as well.
@gt5oh
you need to wipe your ext3 partition any time when switching between a hero and cupcake rom. or at least the app_s folder and dalvik cache
Ive never had my SD card partitioned - I have a class 6 8gb card - how do I split it 3 ways like mentioned above?
(no wonder I get so much lag, everything is running off my phone memory and not my SD card..)

Im sure you can also find a guide inside of these forums as well, but I used this one. Very simple, with pics too. If your thinking about running HERO, just make sure your Linux-Swap is around 64-96MB. I run mine at 128MB linux-swap and I have no HTC loading screens or lag what so ever.
wow that first guide is huge..
My phone is already rooted, I have an older hacked version of the 1.5 firmware - where should I start from if I want to go to the new Hero firmware (Whos firmware should I DL there is a million threads?)

Dude, I saw .exe and I was like . Im thinking to myself, where did he get these from. Most ROM, SPL, RADIO, AUDIO, THEME etc are .zip
those were on engadgnet, are there any roms based on that new firmware yet? its supposed to be really smooth
Im pretty computer savy and I still cant figure out where to get started on updating my phones firmware to a fast Hero build.
I need to get the ball rolling and everything I read just confuses me more, there seems to be a million ways to do everything - does anyone have a solid guide that worked for them?
you're making this so much harder than it really is
partition your sdcard (fat32, roughly 500mb ext3, linux-swap)
(if it is already partitioned wipe your ext3 partition with mke2fs -j /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 )
put the hero rom on your phone. i hear the newest jacski is good or akiarah
wipe your phone
flash the rom
reboot
give it a while to boot up, then give it a while to start the setup wizard (basically go make a sandwich and eat it)
set up your phone
yay you now have hero. (if you're me, 30 minutes later say screw this and go back to cyanogen's rom)

Yep, no Hero rom is stable enough if you actually need your phone out in the wild to function near perfectly. If you rely on it for anything business related then stick with cyan or xrom.

temp pulled

One of the users reported something happen with their phone, I don't know if it's related but until I figure it out for sure I've pulled the build.
Until I can be sure guys if you updated with the latest version please flash back to a different nbh and use a different build.
Personally I've had no issues with this but I want to be sure.
As CP0020 posted here; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=664941 we think it's just from flashing the NBH so many times it may have worn out the nand. It's the same failure I had when my phone died. However as we are still unsure I'm not comfortable continuing development and releasing. If anyone wants to take over where I left off on this they can.
Awesome. Downloading now.
does gmail work? can i sync my contacts?
EDIT: i saw in your txt file to use market to setup account, not wizard

Here's what I'd call the Beta of the new eclair sense build.
This must either be installed to sd card paritions or using the ext2 file. DO NOT try to install to your nand.
I still don't have the google apps figured, though apparently the people with the g1 port don't have it going either
This is not a port of the G1 build but our very own.
As with all Hero based builds you must be using a 320x480 nbh.
What doesn't work;
bluetooth, wifi, google apps
As always I AM NOT responsible if it breaks anything
Enjoy

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere, and I apologize if it has, but can I run an SD card build on top of my NAND somehow? And then switch back to NAND w/o data loss if I don't lke it? Thanks.

you bet, use the installer, install to sd..
when you want to switch back, in the options just change the installer settings back to system on nand and data on nand and exit without installing anything..

cool, i will try this out. I dont have partitions on my sd. I assume i need to do this first. Can i create a partition without wiping my sd card?
This has some real potential. It seems a little slow but I'm guessing that has more to do with my crappy sd card than the build.
I'm interested in seeing where this build goes.

It runs fantastic on nand.. with some optimization I expect it will run really well. Also there's no swap or anything running with this build, that would make a huge difference no doubt.

Saving Files and Apps after flash

Now that I am enjoying my first ROM, I am getting ready to re-wipe and flash in my second ROM attempt as I taste some different flavors of new OS. My question is, will I lose the contents of my SD on a rewipe? Even more in detail, will I lose apps that I was able to save to SD with my current ROM?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Just make a back up of ur SD to ur PC and u should b fine and if ur apps are on ur SD already then no you won't loose them the only way to completely wipe ur SD card is by formatting it via PC or recovery or in the os itself under SD/ card & phone storage and u have to remember the apps u choose to install to the SD from within the rom on a full system and data wipe yes they will b deleted if you have them backed up threw a program like titanium back up on ur SD then full wipe or not they will b on ur SD and if your asking can u flash a different rom and still have the apps you have on your current rom show up without installing them again then no hope this helps good luck

that's tons of space!
The backup will be done on the internal sdcard. so you won't need the external one.
lol I thought it was too but I was not for sure. This will be my first time doing anything like this so just trying to make sure I do it all right. So it sounds like the 8GB should be fine then to back up my stock stuff and then get to rooting and doing a ROM. Thanks! Gonna order the 8GB card now. Can't wait!

you shouldn't need to order a card for backing up. the captivate has about 13 gig's of internal storage. You just need to make sure you have enough free space on your internal card to make the back up.
Yeah but I thought it would be much safer if I did the backup to a SD card. That way if something really goes bad I would have that to restore from. Do you think it would be safe then to just use the internal?

That's all I have ever used. Once the backup is made you can copy it to your computer for safe keeping.
And as far as I know you can only backup to the internal sd.
Ah ok sounds good. Man I have a ton to learn. All new to this.
So which ROM would you recommend? I just want Froyo for my Samsung Captivate but I want everything to work also.
go for the cognition 3.00+ or the ultimate rom in the forum. most stable bug free fast and good battery life.

My vote goes to Serendipity, if you can handle 3-4 updates a week(which i think is a good thing) and you really dont have to update, just a few minor tweaks in between versions. Link is in my sig
