Hello there guys, I searched the forum and can't find any section/topic/stickie for new members to introduce themselves so I thought I'd start a topic here saying hello.
Deed-elvis here, (AKA Laurence in Real life ), I currently possess an HTC kaiser, Which I've owned for 2 Years after buying brand new, As well as a recently acquired, second hand, Sony Experia X1. And what Started me rolling is a now defunct Imate Jam which kept ended up constantly Hard resetting itself. Currently I'm in between The X1 and the kaiser as my main phone of choice and The reasons for this will be made clear in the not to distant future on these boards
I've searched XDA Devs every so often for Little titbits here and there before, Like the slide2unlock app, And I also had the kaiser in bits not just once, but twice in order to replace the touchscreen. What Had happened was that I bought the device when it came out in 2007, however after flying back from Amsterdam to Scotland not long after I bought it, The Screen cracked & Expansys Weren't willing to replace under warranty . SO I kept the device as something of a Dust gathering paperweight whilst I reverted back to my Imate Jam. it wasn't until 4 months later I found that they were retailing appropriate screens on Ebay. Once i had the screen, I googled around Like crazy for methods of stripping down the kaiser. I found one and got to work:

The second time (around the end of last year) I slipped on a small rocky outcrop and my kaiser took a dent to it's front casing, afterwards, the Kaiser screen that I had replaced lost a bit of touch calibration as stylus taps were being recognised totally out of position. so I replaced it again.
Also the confidence from doing this has led me to "attack" other broken electronics. For Example, i had a Canon SD600 Point and shoot digital camera that I took on a ski holiday and cracked when I fell on my arse trying to look graceful on 2 planks ( it was in my back pocket), so without even a manual or even googling. I ordered the appropriate LCD screen and Went about replacing that as well:
And that now works too the experience with both of these has taught me a great deal about how modern Electronics are designed and put together
Also I realise that the Kaiser Has it's its issues with Image processing (AKA redundant graphics processor ) through HTCclassaction.org. but It was through there (and loads of movie format experimentation) that I managed to get wind of corecodec's coreplayer and turn it into a movie and podcast playing powerhouse with the added benefit of a 16GB microSDHC memory card (as well as an Audio adapter that can only be found on the far echelons of Amazon and Ebay, and not locally in the UK ) :
The Kaiser was, and still is, very good to me for reasons that I will go into in future postings where I will compare and contrast with the X1. I also intend to take the Kaiser on installing custom roms so I'm still doing a lot of reading on SPL's and hard resetting, I'm not gonna dive in and ask questions willy nilly without looking at or searching out stuff that's already been posted.
But currently, the Kaiser is in "rude" health
let me be the 1st
welcome
second! welcome nice post lol, ive changed my e65 (nokia) case.. you can find good videos about how to do it, its a really nice experience (if everything works offcourse XD)
Oi welcome here laddie!!! You certainly sem to kow your way around electronics. I too, am a huge Kaiser (TyTN II) fan. I have had mine for almost 2 years now. I still have my imate K-Jam (hence my nick) and my Nokia 3650. All three are in almost pristine condition because I am a stickler for looking after my thinng. I have always carried my phones in their cases etc.
Anyway, welcome again. This is an amazing forum full of very useful and interesting stuff. Some people here are geniuses and very helpful, and some, alas, are not so helpful. Some are downright rude, so just ignore those. There are enough of us here that are willing to help anyone without being nasty.
On a separate note, you are indeed very fortunate to live in Edinburgh. It is my dream to go to the Edinburgh Tattoo one day!!!
Regards,
MAC
Thanks for the welcome folks , here's to many more contributions between myself and these forums from now on
Back into the IT thing
Hi all,
Welcome Elvis! I just started today, after getting a tytn ii phone. I studied IT and worked with various computer businesses, way back in the day, about 9 years ago and made a career change... be a mum... so when I got this phone, it was... whoa, I have to remember all the programming, gadgetry, etc which I faintly remember from before. I use to program in C, but man, I need a revamp! This site is awesome, and I am just buzzing that there is such a community out there, supporting each other without any expectations (however, donations are a kind offer of your appreciation, and I support this whole heartedly, so when I get some money, I will donate as much as I can! for reals!!). Now thats cool! Once I get my game plan on, hopefully I can add something useful to this site.
Just wana say cheers to the xda team here, and all the contributors, its an ingenious and helpful site.
Bring down all the monopoly hoggers out there...
And to all the noobs in here (me included), dont give up.. its not rocket science, seek and you will find!
Take care and God bless yall.
Welcome
Awesome not replaced screen yet and am dreading it lol, mines got red specs where crack in screen but keeps soldiering on

Yo guys, I have had this Kaiser since January, and I must be honest it was a dissapointment, but then I stumbled across this site, and I started flashing my phone with different roms, and yeah I must admit, the dissapointment dissapeared for a while, and now, my phone's keyboard broke, and I can't do anything, its stuck on ECFG, so when i goto word or something, it types ECFGECFGECFGECFGECFGECFG the whole time.
Just want to say was an awesome time here, by the end of next month I'm gonna be throwing this Kaiser against the wall, theres just too much thats wrong with it, even out of the factory.
1) crap GFX drivers
2) crap battery life
3) my touched screen stopped working for a while
4) way too fragile
5) and now this.......keyboard stuck on ECFG...
6) During a phone call signal strength is 100%, but seems like Mic is cutting out everynow and then. Have to slap it while talking to the other person so they can hear me??!?!!
Thanks a lot for XDA otherwise i wouldve threw this phone out long ago.
Any reccomendations on what phone I should get next?
Thanks
...iphone?
Send your Kaiser "disaster" to me...
sell for parts, fit there is any parts left of it
The next phone i am getting is HTC_Raphael
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Raphael
A few kaiser people move to HTC_Diamond
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Diamond
They are just about the same except
HTC_Diamond
4gd on board rom
no microsd slot
no keyboard
fm radio
480 x 640
HTC_Raphael
512mg rom
keyboard
micro sd slot
fm radio
480 x 640
HTC_Diamond is out but i think HTC_Raphael is coming out this month
too bad the rapheal looks really thick... but you are right about the kaiser being extremely delicate i have had a few problems also.
Sell it man, don't waste it on the wall. You can easily get a good amount for it broke. Lots of people would be willing to take the chance at fixing the keyboard. I did that with about three wizards and made a profit.

SHHH! Dang I was in talks of getting it from him for free.
iPhone would be nice, but you lose so much when going away from windows mobile. the xperia is looking pretty nice.
What are you people doing to these phones to make them "fragile"? Using them as hammers?
I'm not the "kindest" to my phone, screen isn't scratched, couple of dings where it was dropped from waist height, mostly to carpet, couple of times on concrete.
Tilt mechanism used 3-5 times a day and it's still as tight as can be.
I just can't figure out how people hose these phones.
I agree my phone is pretty durable. Climbing out of my SUV a couple times I've Hit my Holster and it released my phone and it fell to the parking lot. Still as strong as ever.
I dunno then maybe my phone fell off the aeroplane or something on the way to South-Africa lol, oh another problem I'm having with the phone, even though my signal strength is 100% etc. I'm hearing the other person loud and clear, but they can't hear me at all at times. I have to slap the phone every now and then and then they can hear me? I mean wtf.
This is the most problematic phone I've ever had. My phone barely has any scratches too, yeah, dropped it a few times, surprizingly I can almost see any scratches on it. There are absolutely no scratches to the touch screen.
I'm a business man, I need my phone 24/7, and it needs to be working 24/7. Like even if I shower, I put the phone about 2m away from the shower, just so that I can hear it, and last night my phone rang, I dried my hands, my hands were a lil wet, and I touched the phone to answer, and the whole keyboard/front buttons went completely bonkers after that.
Now my previous phone was completely splash proof (Nokia N80ie) and I have dropped that thing millions of times, and I've never had a days crap with it. Yeah after a while it looked like the phone just came out of world war 2, and yet it still grafted.
So ja..... my lil 2 cents

Hmmmmm i dont know about delicate.....im not gentle what-so-ever and my kaiser has seen concrete pavement many a time..... Aside from the scratches on the case, it still works like new
I have a dead kaiser also, but mine was self destruction.
Work gave me the ****s, so I literally threw the phone as hard as I could on the floor.
I stayed in one piece, but was completely dead.
I have another one know, but I'm also starting to lose my patients with it.
Running Dutty's apr/29 rom.
My main problem with the kaiser is, no matter what rom, when it's time for some hardcore use, like making ****loads of calls, sending msgs etc.., it tends to fail at the most critical of times, and I have to soft reset with furious anger
Thats my main gripe with the phone.
The sad thing is, I have 4 more kaisers sitting here.
I think I'm gonna sell one for an iphone, and one more to get a touch pro.
Or you could just give them to me. I will use them for good, I promise.

Have you tried the ROM in my signature?

OK.
So I've been trying to decide which phone to buy for a few months and it has finally come to a head because my Cingular 2125 (Faraday) has finally broken and I'm stuck with using my incredibly old SPV C500 from the UK (aka HTC Typhoon).
Which is best? Tilt, centro or duo?
My concerns with the tilt are the size of the thing and also the tilting mechanism. It just seems a bit flimsy to me and I'm going to want it to last for 2 years.
Recommendations anyone?
ROFL!!!! OMG Ouch my Side. Ow Ow Ow. Pantech Duo.... LOL!
As for the Tilt, I'm going on 9 months and my Tilt is still as strong as when I got it. I also made it tighter by getting a Hard Case from Sedio.
But if you really want I pretty looking Palm device. You could buy the Centrino.
pollock, my wife has/had the Pantech Duo. THEY SUCK! She absolutely hates it. She hates it so much that she is willing to pay the $175 contract cancellation fee just so she can get a new phone. That's pretty bad. I have no input on the Centro. My Tilt is freakin' awesome. I want the Touch Pro myself but the Tilt is by far, hands down, without a doubt, second to none the very best phone I've ever had! Bar none.
scratch the pantech duo...I have both the centro and the tilt and if you don't mind the video problems then i suggest the tilt...
I agree with what's said above...the Pantech Duo blows!!! My wife also has one, and although she sounds fine when I talk to her on my tilt....the few times I've talked on her Duo the person on the other end of line sounds like they are in a barrel or something. Very hollow-sounding crappy speaker.
The Tilt is the 3rd WinMo phone I've owned and it's the best to date. I use the gps at least once a week (TomTom has never steered me wrong), the camera is pretty good for pics (it's replaced my Sony 3.2mp and my Kodak 5mp cameras)...however video is very sluggish and choppy in low-light situations, Audiomanager works pretty good to stream music over bluetooth to my Pioneer headunit in the Xterra.
I must say, you pretty much have to be willing to do a lot of reading about how to hack/reprogram a WinMo phone in order to be happy with it. They are all extremely buggy and need attention. For example, I can flash a new rom and set everything up....have it running great for a few weeks to a month, then out of the blue things start to crash and not work anymore. You just have to be willing to mess with it a lot. It almost becomes a hobby flashing roms and reconfiguring your WinMo phone.
With that being said, I'm still very happy with it and all the functions it can perform. I also want the HTC Touch Pro. In my opinion you should wait for it. Faster, better interface, video output, and supplied working video drivers.
I heard a rumor it's coming to ATT this fall? (fingers crossed)
I had Centro before Tilt and I can safely say that Centro's battery life is very crappy. Keyboard keys are very tiny for many users, they weren't for me tho. Only thing I missed about Centro was threaded SMS and it has been solved since WM 6.1.
Centro doesn't have any Wifi or GPS either.
The other 2 phones don't even compare.. And how does the tilt seem flimsy, mine works just was good as the day I bought it in Oct.
I just got back from Vacation with my Tilt and I think I will write a review of how it performed in Vegas. You will see, oh yes you will see.

Thanks for all your replies thus far.
As for feeling flimsy, I don't know, I just felt like the tilting mechanism was not very strong and I was worried that it would break.
I have searched the net quite extensively though and have not read any reports of that happening so if y'all are finding it reliable then I won't worry about that aspect of it.
I'm glad I could make so many people so happy with the suggestion of a Pantech Duo... a little laughter does a body good!
So how many people think I should hold out for a touch pro?
The pantech is a toy compared to the power of a fully operational tilt.
Also, did you actually mess with a Tilt or a dummy?
I had a tilt for a few days... had fun doing some mods, enjoyed walking around with the GPS showing me where I was so I didn't have to look at the street in front of me
A phone for me is a huge decision, I only buy one every 2-3 years and I use it more than I use virtually anything else so I want to make sure I get the right one.
I have had HTC phones for the past 6 years and they have never let me down so...
the centro isnt a 3g phone and its a joke on the internet.. also have you ever seen the keyboards on those its unusable to me its so small.. the pantech duo has call quality issues amoung other things pantech doesnt make good regular phones but they just want to jump in the pda arena with the big dogs and try to make a splash.. they are garbage.. BTW i keep up on the phones i work for ATT and we dont sell a phone that compares to the tilt/kaiser.. maybe the 3g iphone in an aesthetic sense..looks nice doesnt perform anywhere near the tilt/kaiser
Thanks Carpenter.
Working for AT&T, have you heard anything about the Touch Pro?
AT&T does not tell their employees anything, I keep calling reps asking for the release of 6.1 and all of them complain AT&T doesn't tell them. So if Carpenter knows something about the Touch Pro, he or she must have googled it. AND YES THE TILT IS BY FAR THE BEST PHONE.
hes right.. lol
Well guys, thanks for all the advice.
I really want to go for a tilt and have been holding out for walmart to bring their expanded inventory of stock back online in the hope that they will carry it again (Walmart are by far the cheapest place I've found for upgrades).
It looks like they are no longer carrying the tilt though. They previously had it for $199 with no rebates and no data plan requirements.
I am therefore going to have to go for the centro which walmart are doing for the princely sum of $0.00 for upgrades in my area. Even if it is only half as good as the tilt, it has to be a bargain when it costs nothing at all!
I hope I'm not too disappointed with it!

Hey guys,
I got my Xperia in early October last year, and it was my first encounter with Windows Mobile. Like many of you I've had mixed feelings towards this device. I do think it can be a great phone - if you put some effort into it and with the help of the xda-developers.
But I took some time and wrote down everything that has annoyed me over the past year with WinMo and the Xperia. I thought it would be interesting to see if there are other Xperia owners out there that share my opinion
All That is Bad About Windows Mobile
So, is this article a load of cr*p or are my objections valid? Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!
/Lars
Ì think you summed up about everything I know I hate - and love - about WM. Amen brother!
i agreed with you, but i prefer winmo 6.5 over the iphone, the blackberry and the e71.
Totally agree, and I started in somewhat the same situation.
The X1 is my first experience with Windows Mobile phones, even smartphones for that matter, and I found it horrible in the beginning. The only thing that has made it even harder for me than you is I use Apple pc's so I can't update my stock-rom without lending someones Windows pc and sure as hell can't try stuff like switching rom's!
i agree about the xperia bits and windows mobile 6.1 - but windows mobile is changing - the 6.5.2 builds with the buttons at the bottom are a huge improvement on the 6.1 we have at the moment and the Marketplace will also change Windows Mobile for the better
Agreed on most of it (99%) and laughed a lot, but FRACKING LOL'D at this:

......but don't forget that there is a reason for the absence of those features... Why?...
...because.....
IT'S A GAMING MACHINE!
I agree too .. problem is there is no perfect device.
iPhone quite limits the software. No opera mini. No AVI playback.
WebOS and Android are still a bit young. We must wait. And in the time of X1, WebOS was not known and Android was just an infant.
WM plainly sucks, but most things can be fixed and it is actually possible to live with it.
Read the list but can't share all of it. I'm not very sensitive to GUI aspects because the critical items are one-timers mostly and you don't touch them every day. My point is that all the other fancy stuff on the market like iPhone and Android are basícally nice as well but they still are islands in a productivity kind of view. I need my windows/exchange connections and frankly, WiMo does the job. I need my particular range of software and I can get them for WiMo, I can't get that stuff for iPhone. An iPhone for me would just be "a phone" with web access but that's not what I carry that device for. I got my Spb 3 and got rid of the panelmanager (never found out what the heck I shall do with it anyway), got my street/air navigation stuff and my ERP system to run on it and I'm happy. I'm not after Facebook, I don't need strange themes every day, I don't even need weather because that's what I see when I don't stare at the screen but lift my neck (move muscles) and watch out of the window, the ones made of glas. Sometimes I think that I'm "just a happy customer" because that thing does exactly what I was expecting when I put my money on the table. Most of the things on your list I never even came across when using mine on a day-to-day basis. But I use my SE to do the job, it's not my job to do something an the SE.
Cheers - Susan
Well put!
+1 for "totally agree"...
all the frustrations ~and yet all the love too ...
Was my first WinMo too -and yes it took several weeks of trial and error(s)
Had it not been for XDA I'd have given up, but thanks to all the great people and stuff here (and my interest /patience /application) I now love my Xperia
Couldn't live without it
Thanks for all the excellent feedback! I was afraid the article was too long for anyone to be bothered reading it
Looks like you both agree and disagree with me, and that most of you have a love-hate relationship with WinMo as well.
@orelsi - do you follow Battlestar Galactica too? Frakking awesome show!
Great article. I agree with all of the minor irritants about default WinMo interface. Since I never really use MS built-in features and rely almost exclusively on 3rd Party (prettier) apps I don't really care about ugly touch-unfriendly interface.
However, for the uninitiated I can see that this could seem like a very large barrier to entry. I would have thought MS would have done to the old WinMo interface what they did with DOS and Win95/98. Hid it underneath a much prettier shell and NEVER see those old 3.1 style menus (unless a REALLY want to).
When people see my phone sometimes they ask about it and usually I can't recommend they buy it, unless they are pretty tech-savvy. Which I think is a little sad because I love my phone so much, and I wish everyone could get a device as capable as mine, but instead they settle for cruder devices.
Oh well, I am happy with mine, and maybe 6.5 and 7 will bring a little more for me to play with and recommend to others.

So say we all !
Hi, I live in South America, I have a brother who lives in the US and I'll be travelling soon so I was planning on upgrading my S3 and after some research I was very excited about asking him to buy me the One Developer edition.
Today I started reading here about all the quality problems that plague HTC's incredible release (gaps, scratches/dents, dead/stuck pixels, speaker problems) and I'm a bit worried because if the phone is defective or breaks afterwards I won't be able to replace it, so now I'm thinking of buying the S4, which now I think is a safer bet, but sadly it was also a safer bet from Samsung's part and I really liked the more ambicious approach that HTC made.
What do you guys think? Would you buy the One knowing that you wouldn't be able to replace it in case it is defective or breaks shortly after buying it?
Thanks.

It's cos he's in a completely different continent that he can't send it back.... Did you even read the first sentence??
I have never heard of any of those issues. One dude did post about their speaker not working, but that's the 1st case I've seen of it. I read a lot of tech blogs and I haven't see them post about arising issues.
So I feel you'll be safe. But then again, I've only read about the carrier versions and not the Dev. Editions. Why do you feel the S4 is a safer bet? Have you not read about any issues with it? What about the 16GB version only have barely 8GB of actual usable storage? LoL!!
All the problems I mentioned are from threads here im xda, and it seems that there are lots of people that have them, especially the stuck pixels problem.
They are not problems of the Dev edition, they are of the One in general.
I have read about people complaining about S4 cracked screens, but there aren't many cases considering the amount of S4s sold and it also can't be said that they are caused because of manufacturing or design problems, I also have the (maybe wrong) impression that Samsung being so much bigger and wealthier has more capacity to overengineer and exhaustively test their phones, every review talks about the HTC having a better build quality, but that only refers to the case material and not the real build quality which can't be tested just by touching it.
The storage is one of the S4 main disadvantages, but now I have a 16GB S3 with a 64GB microSD and it's not so bad, only problem is not being able to have many 1gb+ games
You'll be fine. This website is only a very tiny fraction of the total user base, and then only a few people from this website even had major problems.
those people talking about stuck or dead pixels are being to anal. most of the time you will never even know they are there unless you use an app that tests them. 468ppi on this phone. ive seen the stuck pixels thread and if you really want to complain about 1 or 2 pixels then you have never owned an lcd tv there is an allowance in the warranty for dead pixels and 1 or 2 will not get you a new tv
Show me a phone a month after its release with absolutely -0- *****es about anything being wrong with it. Its impossible. Everything has some percent of problems.
Well.. ok, I think you convinced me, it also helped that 20 minutes ago my 2 months old S3 fell from my desk to the floor and this is how it looks now:

The plastic housing and all glass front is too fragile, I don't tend to drop my phone that's why it doesn't have a case, but with these phones you drop it once and you are done
It heard you talking about buying an HTC as your next phone. So it hurled itself off the desk as a half hearted attempt at sympathy. Ive seen it a million times. Dont fall for it.
You probably decreased the odds of having one of these problems just by opening a thread on XDA wondering about these problems! XDA is a small community and remember HTC said they sold 5 million of these devices. Just don't actively look for a problem. If you do, you'll find one

About Me...Take a seat
Im all about android, since you are reading this I’m willing to bet you are too. From a Motorola Brick to a Samsung Galaxy Gear, I’ll show you how I fell in love with android. Sit back and relax as I lead you on my journey…. I recently searched for T-Shirts, hoodies, jackets, anything that I can wear with an Android based design. My results netted almost none at all. I found maybe one or two t-shirts. I was pretty disappointed that I could not walk to classes at The University of Kansas wearing something I supported so much. Here is my story.
My first phone was a brick from Motorola at the age 14. My mom placed my first phone on my birthday cake so I immediately thought it was fake. I remember thinking it couldn't be merely anything but a hollow dummy phone. To my surprise it was heavier than what I had expected. That birthday marked the long nights of playing snake.
At 15 my second phone came into my life. It couldn't just be any phone though. It had to have a color front LCD screen and play polyphonic ringtones. My mom and I settled on Kyocera. A flip phone on virgin-mobile. This phone served all a teenager's needs at the time. With this phone I was introduced to Java given the web browser. At the time there was absolutely no development from a 15 year-old’s standpoint. I was simply happy could browse Myspace on my phone.
When I was 16 everyone in high school had the Motorola Razr (today's IPhone) but I wanted something different. I wanted something just as good and just as slim. I could afford it since I started work at a Sonic nearby.... Making $5.15/hr plus tips I was basically rolling in money. 220 dollars later I ordered the Samsung A900 aka "The Blade" from eBay. It was dope at the time. It had front facing speakers, music control buttons, and a rotating camera. I’m just realizing it now but was the first selfie phone. :cyclops: To stand out I wrapped the phone in a money skin from ebay. I was pretty much the cool kid on campus.
While I was around 17 years old I bought my first smartphone. This also might be my first time finding xda, I joined in 2008. It was the HTC Vogue aka The Touch. It was my first ever touch screen phone and it had windows! I was amazed I could simply copy and paste files just like my computer and it only had 3 buttons. With unlimited texting/data and my Acura Integra I was living the life of a teenager.
18 years old I was still working at Sonic but now as a shift manager. The pay was great for my age while still living with my parents. Once my upgrade came along I decided to get another HTC. The Touch Diamond. All I ever wanted. It was a windows phone, it has a pretty good camera, AND it had a gyroscope built in! Now I can brag to my friends about this awesome game where you can tilt the phone in order to roll a ball through a maze.
Onward came the Motorola Droid. At this point I was 19 and recently accepted into the University of Kansas studying Mechanical Engineering. I remember sitting in English 101 discussing a topic about how technology has shaped us. The guy sitting next to me noticed my Droid on the desk and brought it up to the class. He said “His phone is basically a computer. He has a keyboard, he can send and receive email, and use the internet. The best thing about it is he can fit it in his pocket.”
