Hey guys,
I got my Xperia in early October last year, and it was my first encounter with Windows Mobile. Like many of you I've had mixed feelings towards this device. I do think it can be a great phone - if you put some effort into it and with the help of the xda-developers.
But I took some time and wrote down everything that has annoyed me over the past year with WinMo and the Xperia. I thought it would be interesting to see if there are other Xperia owners out there that share my opinion
All That is Bad About Windows Mobile
So, is this article a load of cr*p or are my objections valid? Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!
/Lars
Ì think you summed up about everything I know I hate - and love - about WM. Amen brother!
i agreed with you, but i prefer winmo 6.5 over the iphone, the blackberry and the e71.
Totally agree, and I started in somewhat the same situation.
The X1 is my first experience with Windows Mobile phones, even smartphones for that matter, and I found it horrible in the beginning. The only thing that has made it even harder for me than you is I use Apple pc's so I can't update my stock-rom without lending someones Windows pc and sure as hell can't try stuff like switching rom's!
i agree about the xperia bits and windows mobile 6.1 - but windows mobile is changing - the 6.5.2 builds with the buttons at the bottom are a huge improvement on the 6.1 we have at the moment and the Marketplace will also change Windows Mobile for the better
Agreed on most of it (99%) and laughed a lot, but FRACKING LOL'D at this:

......but don't forget that there is a reason for the absence of those features... Why?...
...because.....
IT'S A GAMING MACHINE!
I agree too .. problem is there is no perfect device.
iPhone quite limits the software. No opera mini. No AVI playback.
WebOS and Android are still a bit young. We must wait. And in the time of X1, WebOS was not known and Android was just an infant.
WM plainly sucks, but most things can be fixed and it is actually possible to live with it.
Read the list but can't share all of it. I'm not very sensitive to GUI aspects because the critical items are one-timers mostly and you don't touch them every day. My point is that all the other fancy stuff on the market like iPhone and Android are basícally nice as well but they still are islands in a productivity kind of view. I need my windows/exchange connections and frankly, WiMo does the job. I need my particular range of software and I can get them for WiMo, I can't get that stuff for iPhone. An iPhone for me would just be "a phone" with web access but that's not what I carry that device for. I got my Spb 3 and got rid of the panelmanager (never found out what the heck I shall do with it anyway), got my street/air navigation stuff and my ERP system to run on it and I'm happy. I'm not after Facebook, I don't need strange themes every day, I don't even need weather because that's what I see when I don't stare at the screen but lift my neck (move muscles) and watch out of the window, the ones made of glas. Sometimes I think that I'm "just a happy customer" because that thing does exactly what I was expecting when I put my money on the table. Most of the things on your list I never even came across when using mine on a day-to-day basis. But I use my SE to do the job, it's not my job to do something an the SE.
Cheers - Susan
Well put!
+1 for "totally agree"...
all the frustrations ~and yet all the love too ...
Was my first WinMo too -and yes it took several weeks of trial and error(s)
Had it not been for XDA I'd have given up, but thanks to all the great people and stuff here (and my interest /patience /application) I now love my Xperia
Couldn't live without it
Thanks for all the excellent feedback! I was afraid the article was too long for anyone to be bothered reading it
Looks like you both agree and disagree with me, and that most of you have a love-hate relationship with WinMo as well.
@orelsi - do you follow Battlestar Galactica too? Frakking awesome show!
Great article. I agree with all of the minor irritants about default WinMo interface. Since I never really use MS built-in features and rely almost exclusively on 3rd Party (prettier) apps I don't really care about ugly touch-unfriendly interface.
However, for the uninitiated I can see that this could seem like a very large barrier to entry. I would have thought MS would have done to the old WinMo interface what they did with DOS and Win95/98. Hid it underneath a much prettier shell and NEVER see those old 3.1 style menus (unless a REALLY want to).
When people see my phone sometimes they ask about it and usually I can't recommend they buy it, unless they are pretty tech-savvy. Which I think is a little sad because I love my phone so much, and I wish everyone could get a device as capable as mine, but instead they settle for cruder devices.
Oh well, I am happy with mine, and maybe 6.5 and 7 will bring a little more for me to play with and recommend to others.

In February 2008, during Mobile World Congress 2008 (a global event for professionals, not consumers), Microsoft will unveil publicly Windows Mobile 6.1 that is a minor upgrade to current Windows Mobile 6.
However the really big deal will be Windows Mobile 7. The first phones with Windows Mobile 7 will go on sale in 2009 but already now you can learn (almost) everything about it (including hint that it will support multi-touch!):
Windows Mobile 7 will use touch gestures, similar to how the iPhone does. You will be able to flick through lists, pan, swipe sideway, draw on the screen. A lot of emphasis has been put on making navigation easier and doing away with scrollbars, including a new scroll handle that allows for multiple ways of finding items extremely fast.
Windows Mobile 7 will use motion gestures, something the iPhone does not. It will not use an intricate and complicated series of gyroscopes and accelerometers. Instead, it will use the camera on the phone to detect motions and create appropriate actions. You will be able to shake, twist and otherwise manipulate the phone and get things done. The phone will be able to perform actions when placed face down on a surface, and it will know when it is in your pocket or bag.

I just got my tyn 2! Next year WM 7 And new phone!! Omg I cant believe this..
Will there be an upgrade for tytn II/Kaiser/Tilt users?
Seeing how it uses multi-touch, nvm....
Wow, it looks very nice. Just got the Tilt and already would like to see what's in store for 2009.
those pictures on engadget are really cool looks like there is finally some good news from the developping team @microsoft they sure looked around at the iphone and all the other touchschreen controlled phones and really improved that new kind of interfacing with ur phone but knowing microsoft a bit it will all be released in 2015 or something or all the good things will be left out when finally released
with wm7 a tilt really needs to be tilted lol
Darn... stupid 2 year contracts... now i cant get a WM7 phone till Almost 2010

Sure you can. You just gotta renew for 2 more years!
Got 2 lines and one is eligible for upgrade in April 2008. I'm gonna wait until the WM7 rolls in.
If the kaiser is to run this monster they would HAVE to upgrade the video drivers for sure
Looks really neat. Love the shake thing.
Don't hold your breath. The first phones with WM7 will be out in 2009, two years after the Tilt/Kaiser comes out. Manufacturers rarely release new WM roms, especially for devices that are 2 years out of date. Chances are WM7 will have new hardware requirements, such as more processing power, RAM, ROM space, and possibly multi-touch and/or an accelerometer. Lets hope for WM6.1, that seems much more reasonable.
Just hope most of the software for WM 5/6 will be able to run on WM 7.
It scares me with the type of re-investment I will have to make to upgrade all my purchased software to WM 7 compatible versions.
This does not mean I am against improvement to our beloved WM operating system.
My two cents:
It is deemed rather impossible that the WM7 will be working on most current WM5-6 devices without a hardware sensor built within the device no?
if no guesture can be tracked through a sensor, how does the soft knows what to do.
bottom line, WM7 will generate a full new range of PDA phones simply to replace WM6 ones. No "upgrade" seems to be possible.
IGNORE post. just red that WM7 will use the on-board camera instead of gyroscopes etc.
well since we cant have the actual WM7, mayybeee, just maybee, someone skilled enough can make an exact theme for WM6...
Looks like I'll have to book another Hong Kong trip for 2009 to pickup a cheap HTC WM7 device any excuse will do though. (getting an unlocked Kaiser for half the price the vendor locked ones sell for here was worth the trip alone.)
Has anyone heard of the android os being put on a wing? If u know anything about it let me know or email me a link [email protected] I have a g1 but also have a wing and like android system better than windows if u can help thanks

I had the G1 phone for about a week after having the Wing for 2 years ... I took the G1 back and got a refund. While the interface was ok, and it has alot of potential .. the battery life was horrible and the lack of features for business use (exchange server, connecting to outlook) made it too much of a teeny booper phone instead of something for a professional.

No, but there IS an existing porting thread, already. Although, I'm the only one in it that has attempted to port anything... (As in, not just putting another phone's in our phones to see it run, but doing a full port by compiling the kernel for our phones.)

You can get Exchange on the G1 with no problem. A program called "MailShadowG" from cemaphore.com syncs your exchange/outlook in realtime push with Gmail/Calendar/Contacts - it actually works really well.
I switched from the 8525 Win Mo phone to the G1 and could never go back. I'll agree that the battery life is pretty bad though. But I haven't found it to be that big of an issue myself. The better browser, maps, gps, accelerometer, etc. all make it worth the upgrade. Will be nicer when OpenOffice or some sort of office apps are created/ported over to it.

Try turning off 3G, the GPS and the synchronizing to google at all times when you don't need them and that might help your battery life.
Not sure if this thread is still alive, but I just wanted to say that we've started a porting project at http://wing-linux.sf.net. So far we've got Android working pretty well on the Wing. No GSM, wifi, bluetooth or sound yet, but we're getting closer. Android 1.5 with full touchscreen support (and a mostly functional keyboard) is working.
We've also got an IRC channel on freenode.org for the project: #wing-linux.

This is indeed the most highly sought after and sophisticated programmer in all of history.
Is this a joke? I don't get it at all.
At least my phone works un-like iFonz
I wasn't saying anything negative. I really truly didn't understand your post. Are you saying that you are going to be introducing a whole bunch of new apps? if so, i am happy about that. But I am not sure if it is joke due to the image, which looked like a commodore 64, this is why i asked if joke
So what is this for?
I think you will come and teach us how to design in photoshop? coreldraw?
or maybe the designers Topic in off topic?... what is this for!!!! please!!!!! jajajaj lol sorry about that.
Okay this is my attempt at explaining everything at once, You see there is a problem, there is wizard who controls the world day & night and he has nothing better to do than to get developers to develop new software and everyday he switches them up like gloves. He's got a block on the skyways, the metro system, atm machines. Even your phone & international communications satellites. As you may beginning to understand, that this smart-chip is controlling everything from newscasts to the ethanol boom. Nobody is anybody and the cellphone has global control. I'm merely the wizard behind the magic, why? Because I was the first to put pen to paper. Then I went to mighty mount ararat and Found Two tablet PCs but when I got down and noticed everyone was using mac to edit "Artistic Nude" photos of their wives and daughter I decended upon them with a grave vengence. And only those that are traveling in my Arc will ever be saved.
In conclusion this phone does much more than control my schedule, it controls the world. It will change history.

WM6.5
I think I’ll stick with 6.1 until WM7 comes out. I took a look at the video and it still looks like a turd. I was just reading the sales numbers for Q3 all I can say is the ass clowns at Microsoft need to get it together very quick.
If Microsoft doesn’t get in the game and fast, it may be to late!!
Here is a link!

omg! that is soooo exciting.
i love new stuff... i am looking forward to WM7 but i can't wait to try something new before that.
what about android, no more discussion about a version to blackstone...
Interesting... Let's hope it get's ported soon
This is really exciting.. However it dosn't look that new to me which is a real shame.. Was hoping for a lot more..
if iwas to hazzard a guess as to what this 6.5 is all about, i would say that 6.5 underlying core maybe the core for WM7, they then strip all the fancy stuff off to leave a faster updated core that doesnt have too much to get messed up. I mean, if they banged out everything and it was too buggy it would be much harder to fix having it all in the mixing bowl.
So, release the basic core with the older UI and get yourself 6 months of free testing on many different devices.
Its a guess, but to me it makes sence, guess we shall have to wait an see.

Strangely, I was thinking the exact opposite. They're sticking with the number 6.5 because the core kernel will remain the same as 6.0/6.1 overall, but with a new, somewhat improved today screen and interface. PIE6, better touch control built-in, some other updated apps, friendlier today with potential plug-in/gadget type of support, but on the same core. Gives them a quick and dirty way to compete with the attractive new competition while preparing for 7 which will contain the brand new core that gives them a lot more flexibility to make it run smoother and have the must-have functionality that the other OSes now have. Honestly, I suspect this one's more likely as it's easier. It takes a lot less time to design a cool interface (not to mention they have the Zune and Danger teams available to help with this) than it takes to improve the kernel.

yay that's what forums are about, discussing!
i found both opinions very interesting. read the first one and convinced me of that right away, then the second one came and i'm all over the place. guys, the real thing is: microsoft is dropping the ball with windows mobile. they created an excellent OS to be used with a stylus than Apple came along with a (i hate to say that) great thumb friendly experience and a, sort of, cute interface and everything was messed up. and not just that there's also google and their android. microsoft got a history of learning opponents moves and counter attacking. i think before we expect we're gonna have a big surprise.
now imagine how funny would it be if even having the best hardware (blackstone) we will still have to put up with a ported version rather than a native one in the end?
i became a senior with this post

your right, it might just be a bodge job on the interface, i really hope not tho, the problem with WM isnt its UI, its the core that cant handle a decent UI, making good shells shouldnt be an issue, your right its an easy way to make it better, but even the TouchFlo UI overlays we have here are hampered by its crap core and slow responce.
Time will tell. the only thing we can be sure of is, either the core or its interface will be crap.
I think the core will remain Windows mobile 6, but with revisions. Hence, 6.5. Microsoft should at least do something about the performance and videocapabilities, since that's what the iPhone is all about.
Secondly, we've got HTC, SonyEricsson, Asus and Samsung with their shells. Microsoft should be more than able to fix up a good shell to run as todayscreen. After that's done, they should drop W.m. 6.5 development entirely and dev W.m. 7.'
In my eyes, WM 6.5 is a people pleaser. But the good stuff comes when WM7 is out.
I don't know why MS or other companies have stopped creating good home screen solutions.
Last good thing we know is Mobile Shell 3.5 but it is far away from perfect.
Symbian (N97) phones have nice solution with lot of widgets as:RSS, Weather, Photocontacts, analogue clock, facebook.
Android has good widgets and lot of them. You can create anything of your home screen.
Windows users (as most "business" ones ) need to search for "home made" stuff as upgrades for Mobile Shell or classic today screen on xda.forum or other sources.
Today screen of windows mobile (classic, titanium, touch flo, mobile shell) still are unfinished.
FLO does not have possibilities to put all widgets in one screen (you cant use rss, contacts, weather, clock... on one screen)
Mobile shell even does not have rss widget at all (WHAT A SHAME)
You can do that with classic layouts but you are unable to move around the screen (you are only able to vertically re-arange layouts)
I had the first HTC Canary... home screen was something innovative, something modern but now...
hmmm windows mobile 7 has no widgets for homescreen?
For Flo (aka Sense) there is CHT, all widgets on one screen etc...
Did you check out CHT?
Because of WP7. WM will never have the potential to compete consumer-wise with Android or Symbian - Android is what WM should have been, and Symbian does not require such complexity to achieve some potential.
WP7 has a take on widgets in the form of Live Tiles. I find they feel more organised than Android widgets, which vary tremendously in size, style, etc.

Indeed it's a small community now and a lot of ppl have moved on. But imo it's eyecandy adaptable and the progress on CHT is impressive. With enough work this can be great. Android is commercialized meaning more support which is why they have made so much progress. Symbian is linux based meaning beyond customizable but imo the n900 is the device that let's you do anything meaning it's god like smartphone. But that doesn't leave winmo out. It still needs more support and beleive it or not it's getting it. More ppl are customizing and a lot of mods have been released.
So who knows in the future maybe in a year or two this'll die out depending ont the support it gets. But winmo faithfuls haven't given up. Tbh I have an iphone 3g i just use this phone for customizing but I for one am impressed... :3
As for the business part of it I wouldn't rely on winmo it's actually not suited for it, the whole kernel is pretty buggy and god knows if you get an BSOD(black screen of death). I understand that other OS phones are pretty stable but winmo is tweakable so far I haven't had one SOD in 3 months thanks to chefs and all that.
@MrBeoTP2: hurr
