Connecting Android to Windows PC to use broadband - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to connect the Android in a similar way to WM's Activesync and use the PCs broadband connection to download stuff from the marketplace or just to download emails to the device etc?

well gmail already automatically syncs whether it's attached with a usb port or not to a computer. HTC Sync is available although I haven't tried it myself. You can find it on Rogers ROMS, most hero ROM cookers have removed it on their hero ROM.

You're welcome I think there's a reverse tethering application or modification that you can use to tether your computer's connection to your phone but I'm not sure about it.

Im interested also that would be helpful to be able to connect it to my pc and use its internet since all i have is edge and not 3g in my area!

Just get a cheap wireless router, they are on ebay for under $10.
Connect WiFi cleanly and not deal with tethering and software.

MSN messenger on AT&T Tilt

Newbie here
I have just gotten the AT&T Tilt.
It seems to be working fine overall, however when I am trying to connect to MSN (Live) Messenger through a WiFi connection, it apparently is not allowed, as it says "cannot connect via WiFi connection)...? Is this normal? Is there ANY way to get arround this? I just don't know if I'll keep the PDA plan forever and it would be easier for me to just connect via tha WiFi wherever available.
Thanks in advance.
(I did a search already and did not see any posts regarding this so I assumed no one has this issue...or cares...?

I have the Kaiser (very similar to the tilt) and Messenger works just fine against WiFi. What version do you have?
I was fairly certain the AT&T ROM for the Tilt removed Live messenger.. did you download it from thread on here or something?
The att ROM did remove windows live all together. You would need to install it. I have a feeling he is trying to use the OZIM program which doesn't use data, it uses text messaging. So when you are connected to Wifi it won't connect.
hmm...actually I didn't download/install anything onto the phone yet. It is an AT&T Tilt with no mods (yet)...and when i hit "instant messaging", it has the three messenger programs as icons (AOL, MSN or Live, and Yahoo).
If I do want to install it, where can I go to get it and would that installed version also be using TXTMessaging or data?

Tilt 'HTC USB Modem' driver needed (for Windows XP)

Hi
I am missing the original CD that shipped with my AT&T Tilt Package. Would anyone be kind enough to upload the USB Modem drivers available on the CD please.
I have read the Wiki and I have looked over the forums for it, all I could find were the Vista Drivers for the same, but not the XP divers.
Thanks for looking.
do you have the latest version of Microsoft Activesync installed? If not, you should download it from Microsoft.com and it should be ready to sync.
I do not need ActiveSync
Hi
I already have ActiveSync 4.5 installed. HTC USB Modem drivers are different, they allow the kaiser to act as a dial-up modem that we can connect to a laptop computer.
Although we can use the 'Internet sharing option' in Kaiser for the same purpose, I just wanted to experiment with this alternative.
I am sure the drivers are available on the AT&T CD, I just need someone to upload it here.
IntShrUI
Hey, I have a Tilt too. I was messing around using the Tilt as a modem. I have the drivers, but I couldn't get the Tilt to dial right. I found on this forum a program called IntShrUI. It is in the Windows folder of your Tilt. Just run it and follow the onscreen instructions. You don't have to dial anything. Just plug the Tilt into your computer, click connect on the Tilt, and the internet is up. I can give you more info, I am looking for the thread. I can upload the drivers when I get home too if you want to go that route.
Thanks
Your method of connection is good, but I do not have a data plan. I guess it works if you have a data plan or something.
What I am doing is, I am making a voice call over the GSM network to a free dial-up number. The speeds are VERY slow, about 7-8kbps, but it does work.
Oh and if the number we dial isn't free, then we will be charged for the duration of the voice call. I know its low tech, but its free for me and it actually works.
Thanks for replying.
Sorry, I misunderstood. I used to do that too. Just making a data call to my ISP to get the internet. I will attach the drivers from my AT&T CD. The folder is labeled Vista, but I am pretty sure these are what I used and that they work with XP. I will test it when I figure out where my dumb USB cable went.
Thanks again
Thank you for the drivers jeff. After tinkering a lot with the WModem application, I believe that the HTC Kaiser cannot be used as a conventional dial up modem.
The only way to overcome this problem is to use 'Internet sharing' in Kaiser and specify a connection there itself. The only disadvantage here is, we cannot use the dial up services like NetZero that require us to use their custom dialers.
If anyone has a solution to this, please make a suggestion.
Has anyone tried the Vista 32bit driver on XP? Does it work?
Vista drivers do work
Yes, the Vista drivers work under xp. The kaiser is unrecognized as 'HTC USB modem'. However, as I pointed out earlier, the Kaiser does not behave like a conventional dial up modem. Only if you have GPRS, 3G etc. you can use this method.
I'm in the same boat. I couldn't get those drivers to load.
It's unreal that you can't find USB drivers for this phone anywhere on the Internet for XP.

i don't mean to criticize or anything, but you have a $400 phone, unlimited internet for the phone is like $20, why not just do that? or do pda unlimited for $50 and you get unlimited sms too, i just don't get shelling out a full paycheck for a phone and not the extra few bucks to optimize it

I had no problem getting these drivers to work on Vista and XP. All you need to do is launch Internet Sharing while your phone is connected to the PC, and when the driver prompt comes up, point Windows to the folder where you stored the drivers.
Under Windows XP SP3, I do not even get prompted for drivers, everything loads automatically.
XP 8925(tilt) ICS usb driver
I'm trying to get my 8925(tilt) connected for ICS on my girlfriends' parents' computer running XP sp 1 via usb.
It tries installing a 'generic IRNDS' (something like that), but doesnt work. I couldn't find a working driver, even when I extracted the vista drivers to a folder and tried setting it as the driver for the 8925 in the device manager. All to no avail.
Does anyone know where I can find the XP driver for whatever usb device it would be consider for ICS?
i've got all the tethering plan yadda yadda, I just need it to work, the phone is faster w/ 3g than thier ... !dial-up!!!
Needless to say we watch a lot of Jurrasic Park on VHS in full Dolby Stereo at that household. ha, no really, i need some help with this. please holla back.
@explorer82: go to Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections > Add a new modem connection.
Select "Cellular Line" as a modem, input the number, user, pass etc.
Than connect to your computer and activate ICS on your Tilt. This should do it.
@rubicant1982: as mentioned in the 2nd post, you need to install Activesync (free download from Microsoft) to be able to connect to Windows XP.

tethering w? tilt

Hey all , ive been trying to tether my laptop with my tilt...now i go into wireless modem and choose the usb type connection. is there additional software or a program i need to install to make it work (and i dont have the tether option on at&t will that make a different ?)
thanx in advance for those with serious replies.
Don't use wireless modem!!! Won't work right. What you want to do is find the program shortcut in ythe \Windows folder called Internet Sharing.lnk.
Copy it & paste it to your program directory located \Windows\Start Menu\Programs, paste the shortcut there.
Launch the Int Share proggie, hook up to pc via usb, select usb as connection type & MediaNet as the connect to. Press connect & activesync will drop out & you will be connected.
It works great...I'm wondering if AT&T can tell that I'm tethering or not when I do this. I really don't want to pay for tethering.

No they can't. I mean they can see how much traffic is going through but after all, you're paying $30 for internet on a tiny device! Thats the price of home DSL internet!
I've been tethering for ages
i've been tethering for a while (and also use data like crazy on my devices) i just make sure to disable to the proxy first...
also once i was in the ATT store making some adjustments on my plan and the guy noticed the high traffic use and was gonna force me to upgrade to PDA connect for $50/month. I just told him that i bought the device with that plan and why would u charge me more if they advertised it with the medianet package...
he let me keep the medianet package and warned me saying that if i get caught then they'll charge me per kilobyte... that day hasn't come yet..
why would i disable the proxy ? thanx for the replies they were very helpfull !

This really deserves a knuckle rap because it's posted about a thousand times. There are two cabs. Disablehiddenproxy.cab & Restorehiddenproxy.cab.
If you have a stock tilt you need to run disable every time you reset because the proxy is default. If you have a modded rom, just the opposite is true & you need to enable it to use AT&T proggies/sites.
READ & SEARCH!!!
Forgive me bra! Your right I should have looked harder .

Yes, I've been tethering ONLY when I go on long road trips, like from DC to NYC and/or DC to NH/VT. I have not been charged extra by AT&T (I'm on the Unlimited PDA Data plan... $40 per month) for tethering, but my understanding is (according to another post I found in XDA-Developers) that if WE UPGRADE TO WM 6.1, AT&T WILL BE ABLE to know when we are doing tethering and when we're not. If tethering... they'll charge us extra. :-( I really think it's unfair! So, these bastards are pretty much asking us to pay $40 for the unlimited PDA plan, which they misinterpret and misadvertise as our having "the internet in our hands"... which is true, but that means we can only get a certain amount of packets per second! By tethering, we're getting more packets per second and that's when they simply do not like it! BASTARDS! Well, those are my 2 cents. Please let me know if it's true about the WM6.1 upgrade and/or if anyone finds out based on real-life experience! (whether or not they got charge for tethering after upgrading to WM6.1)
what exactly will disabling the proxy do?

Umm....yes. It's in the owner's manual that came with your device. The program is Internet Sharing.
Hardware needed= 1xKaiser and 1xLaptop/PC
Software needed=Bluetooth on Laptop/PC
Method:
1. Enable visible bluetooth on Kaiser
2. Enable visible bluetooth on Laptop/PC
3. Go to START>PROGRAMS>INTERNET SHARING on the Kaiser and CONNECT
4. On Vista go to Network connections panel and choose Connect to PAN Buetooth network.
Should be done. Just beware of your data usage as you could run up a heck of a bill if you go crazy surfing and downloading.

When your PDA is connected to ActiveSync it gets access to the laptop's internet connection, so yes. Install ActiveSync and connect the phone. No partnership needed, guest is ok.

Not to be a complete smartass, but Bluetooth is a physical hardware radio device....not software ( via an internal card or USB adapter). I only mention this in the case the original poster ( who obviously didnt open his manual or do any sort of research ) thinks he can download a piece of software to make his PC have bluetooth.
Again, not flaming or picking a fight ....... just making sure he has no confusion

Diamond as Modem with O2

hi guys i just added the unlimited web browsing option with o2 on my diamond as we moved into a new flat and we dont have braodband yet.
o2 said i cant use my phone as a modem though, they dont allow you to connect to the net via your computer. i think she meant if i put the sim card into a usb modem.
But im wondering can anyone confirm whether or not i will be charged extra for syncing my diamond to my laptop and using the phone as my modem??
thanks
anyone?.....................
I don't see how they would know?
Other than the excessive downloading...
hey,
i do this all the time and they never know. do you have unlimited web on phone?
You can indeed connect your phone to your pc and use it as a modem to access the internet. When you connect your phone to your pc you should have the option to choose "internet sharing" mode which allows this. However although i have an XDA Ignito I am running a cooked rom and i'm not sure if "internet sharing" is available as an option on the standard o2 rom. Either way if you do have that option it wont cost you anything as long as you keep within the fair usage policy.
thanks guys, i basically used it yesterday and checked my charges today and no extra charges so all seems ok. i have the unlimited web, run a cooked rom with the internet sharing option on a diamond so works fine and is actually quite fast!
i think you are right if you use it a lot to download films etc they will find out, shame but never mind hopefully sky will hurry up and install our BB soon
Thanks again for the help!
