Are there any translators in the android market that don't need to access the internet for translation? I'll be abroad in a few months and I plan on using prepaid sim cards, so I'd rather not use all the $ on data. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Not that i've seen. The translation software and language pulgins that I've seen on standard pocket translators are very very large and they generally cost lots of money. The size requirements alone would probably make it difficult to effectively fit an offline translator on the G1.
Search the market for DictionaryForMIDs or get the installer from dictionarymid.sourceforge.net/android.html . This one has a lot of different free dictionaries.

Saw that someone had posted about HTCMail being available to French users, but it seems to be available "in Europe" generally (German, English, Spanish, French, Italian - NOT Czech, Dutch or Russian yet)
Go to http://www.europe.htc.com/, select your language from the top right of the page (if not English), then click on the HTCMail tab. You can then register; the first stage of this is an IMEI check to ensure that you're using a Kaiser/TyTn II/etc.., then you can go on to choose "[email protected]".
The first two months are free, after which time it will automatically terminate your account if you don't sign up for a paid account (starting from €14.99 a month)....only ***** is that you can't download a copy of Outlook 2007 unless you pay some money.....
Still, it's gotta be worth a look for a freebie (lovin' the OWA2007 interface )
Oh, and you may want to backup your existing Exchange ActiveSync settings and associated mailbox on your Kaiser; the sign-up process downloads an HTC app that you install to your device that configures the Exchange ActiveSync/Direct Push....AND DELETES ANYTHING YOU ALREADY HAVE!!!
Like I said, it's worth a look...hell, what's another email account when you've got 9 already
Cheers,
Mark.
Interestingm, going to check it out
why is this better than livemail?
How much do you have to pay to get Outlook 2007?
Is it a full version that you can keep even if you terminate the account? Might be a ncie way to get a legit copy of Outlook cheap since HTC are skimping on that cost too with the latest phones and only supplying trials not full versions as they always have in the past.

As far as I can tell, you don't get to download Outlook 2007 until you've paid to subscribe; no doubt the T's & C's contain details of whether you can retain the software if/when you terminate. At the starting rate of €15-ish per month for 3 months, a copy of Outlook ends up costing you €45 (about £34, give or take)....assuming they let you keep it (would they even know/care if you did????).
There are other offerings on the market - although not all of them use Exchange 2007; there's Mail2Web (Ex.2003) which in its' most basic form is free but you don't get Outlook unless you subscribe for about $10/month. There's also the Exchange 2007 hosting provided by XDA forum member @DeniaL (get the details in this post) which looks pretty good too. Other members undoubtedly have experience of others, so I guess it's a case of going with whatever option fits your needs....."you pays your money, you makes your choice"
As with any of these 3rd party mail solutions, I wouldn't use them for any business mail (as one of the two people in my company responsible for all aspects of IT security, I'd probably have to fire myself if I starting forwarding/storing corporate e-mail on an external server )....I use Mail2Web (free edition) for aggregating all my other POP3 mail accounts, but I may switch to the HTC offering if it pans out (it seems to be a fair bit speedier than Mail2Web and the OWA client on HTCMail is almost identical to the desktop version of Outlook 2007).
All this is just my opinion, so the usual "YMMV" applies - if you don't have Direct Push already, you can try it for 2 months free to see if you really need it....and if you do, then you can decide whether or not you wanna pay for it!!
Mark.
Have searched extensively in these forums but have not found what I needed.
I need to essentially duplicate the functionality of Nokia Maps (as available on the N95) on my Tilt. That means:
* Maps can be pre-loaded for travel in areas with no data connection;
* Maps available for (at least) all of Europe;
* Free, until and unless you need route calculation/navigation (which I don't)
In the US I use Google Maps which is great, but when I'm in England/Europe I'm on a pay-as-you-go SIM which means outrageous rates for data, which is why I need something that can be 100% pre-loaded. I only use it when walking so don't need all the routing features.
Unfortunately Nokia is no longer offering a Windoze Mobile version of their mapping product after having bought out smart2go, otherwise that would have been perfect.
Any recommendations/links would be greatly appreciated.
- Oliver
There's Tomtom and iGo and the maps for both aren't free. You're not going to find a pre-loaded maps program, because it doesn't exist afaik. The only free GPS programs are those which require data.
free gps software
You can try to see if you can compile a copy of roadnav or navit. Those data + softwares are truly free. Plus it helps to improve openstreetmaps data that is free too!
I've read pages of GPS threads and I can't figure out what I should use. Some say TT7, some say Google Maps, etc. I want one that works that I don't have to pay a monthly fee for. I don't mind a one time purchase. I want GPS navigation.

TomTom 7 available here you only gey a free base map and there are no voices "you can downlaod a voice for free from TomTom on handset" then if you like you can buy the maps pretty cheap UK & Ireland £30, so one hell of a saving.
Hope this helps.
I know you siad free ,the free programs are not bad but they do not even compare to the ones you pay for. I have been using this for several years now,I travel a lot and they are very good about updates .

Google Maps does use GPS. It just doesn't work out routes for you and tell you where to turn left/right etc.
my vote goes for iGO8. Works very well on my kasier

Oh yes it does.
It won't SPEAK the directions, but it most certainly does compute turn-by-turn driving directions. You have to "advance" to the next turn by hand (pushing the button) and it doesn't talk, but it does and will compute routes and use the internal GPS.
Its also more complete and up to date than the "packaged" solutions out there in my experience.
The disadvantage is that it requires an active data connection where the "prepackaged" stuff with the maps on an SD card do not.
Mines goes to igo8 also,
it may or may not be free, unless you look for it...
but its probably the best GPS software ive used. Its feature packed and super smooth on the kaiser.
Google maps would be nice if we can download the maps and keep them in sync through alternative data connections maybe in another year or so...
It depends with your country and the map also,.
i live in indonesia - surabaya, and the only map for surabaya that best is in ".img" so thats why i use Garmin Mobile XT and sometime Navitel, both are great,.
but if you want a better menu display, just try iGO,.
all cant be free, unless you unlock it,.
So what ones dont need a active data connection? I know google maps needs a connection but i need the maps on my device.
CoPilot Live 7 for me, worked fine on Kaiser.
Gmaps most certainly does tell you when to turn etc. No it doesnt have an annoying female voice that says it, but it pops up on the screen. Works great for me, hell w/ street view, sometimes when we cant find an address at work, we just hit street view and look at the front of the building.
You mentioned something about connection: If your not paying for data your not really using your tilt anyway.
Can't believe nobody has mentioned windows live search mobile. This is one of my favorite apps and does a lot more than just gps-enabled turn by turn directions.
I highly recommend it. It's no TomTom, but it's free and it does the job.
I will second the comment about Microsoft Live Search. They actually got something right! It's a very convenient program. I don't believe it speaks directions but it does do the turn by turn directions very well.
I personally use iGuidance on an iPaq for long travel navigation but it isn't as user friendly as Live Search which is what I use in a pinch and to get a second opinion on occasion. iGuidance you will have to pay for, and the mapping is very good and it will speak the directions as a normal GPS will do. But Live Search is very cool because you literally just say where you wanna go and it will look it up and take you right there. iGuidance also doesn't have very many Points of Interest but Live Search is full of POIs.
iGuidance will not require you to have a data connection but you will need a few GB of space to load all the maps. Live Search takes very little space but will require a Data Connection to download the maps as you go.
iGuidance ~ $100
Live Search = $0 (but need data connection)
Hope that helps!

If you travel a lot, or in area that have very poor connections a dedicated GPS software is the only way to go.....
IG =$100 but good for several years and if you change devices you can install on them, IG space requirements will depend on how big of a map you want to load ,1 gig will do the whole U.S.
if you have a good size contact list, with IG you can pull up the contact and it will take you there...
Live search + $0 but it relies a decent connection , and if you are a heavy user of your data plan , well it could put you over your unlimited plan..another dowside , updates can get slow if your not in a G or e network..
IMO spend the money on a dedicated GPS software..on use live search as you need it...

Does that actually work for you? When I tried it, it always stalled trying to download the maps.
Plus it's nowhere as good as Google Maps or Live and basically the same function (downloads maps, shows your position).
Unfortunately, I'm currently seperated from my Kaiser so I haven't been able to try it. But, being overseas my options are limited, and Google Maps and Windows Mobile Live doesn't cut it. Christian72D has had a lot of success with this program though:

Free and working
Did you ever try NAV4ALL? It's totally free and works in a decent way too. It doesn't have the easiest interface of this world but it does work.

Enjoy.
I'm an ancient Near Eastern studies student so I study a lot of classical languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Coptic, etc.). I've used a couple flash card programs on the PC, does anyone recommend a good one for Windows Mobile? A great feature would be if it could sync with a PC program, since that would make it easier for me to create flash cards in non-Latin scripts (like Greek and Hebrew) and then just sync them to my device.
I dont know of any that sync but lingvosoft (i think thats how its spelled) has a WIDE array of language software for windows mobile devices, i like their programs, they provide free demos that are full versions of the program, and they have everything from flash cards to full speaking translators... I've only used the flash card program for bulgarian, but I was impressed...
I hope i've been helpful...

Edit in excel (or notepad) then replace file.
If you want syncing then look for another software that lets you sync 2 files back and fourth.
*** WARNING: Originally Speechy was NOT meant to be anything other than simple voice to voice translation with amazing recognition but after tons of requests for other features, we kept the same UI but added-on as this is what our USERS wanted and we go according to what they want, even if this wasn't what we originally desired. ***
What is Speechy...?
A translator you can really talk to, literally. Say what you need and Speechy will translate by writing in the language you desire but also immediately speak out loud what you said for either others to know what you really want to say in a foreign language or as some are using it as a great tool if you're just trying to learn the language to prepare for your next trip.
Next time when you think you need to rent a Translator, Speechy is here!
Just remember, when you're at an Airport and no one speaks your language and you don't know the native tongue, you can say "How do I get to Terminal B" and know someone who speaks one of the pre-bundled languages can help you by listening to a voice or read the translation on your phone.
Did you know... you can now AIM your phone at a sign, magazine, or any form of a document with words and Speechy Camera Tool (SCT using a form of OCR) can actually scan the words, translate what it understood to the language you desire and even speak it back for you.
How is this DIFFERENT?
1). Mic/Recording Input
Simple! Our voice input function that grabs the audio you speak either close or whichever distance you may be and takes the input from the phone Mic. When using your "Mic", we've designed our own Equalizer that is built-in that actually has various functions and decreases/increases pitch, balance, volume and other aspects to obtaining the audio you speak in which it also breaks it up in to a bunch of "chunks" and sending it via Internet (Wifi Connection or 3G Required) in multiple parts to then have it run through a Speech Server where it is analyzed in each segment of your Mono input (Never Stereo).
2). Cloud Speech Server
When your multiple chunks are each processed one-by-one for better understanding, they are first run under another synthesizer to turn everything flat (Bass, Treble, Pitch/Frequency, etc...) and another technique that let's us better understand what you say, even if you have an accent to the best we can and as each few moments are separated, it allows us to promptly guess what each word is being said and if quickly it fails a built-in/server-run spelling database (Query's originally from Bing!) and if it is still valid it will continue on to check to see if it can find the next best thing using the 2nd Dictionary aka "Phrases" which uses a form of AutoComplete for quicker search which is why you may notice sometimes a little bit of lag time/timely response as it is doing it's very best to try and be 100% accurate.
e.g. "This is a test" may normally be recognized by other Speech Services as "This is a pest". In this case the word "pest" could be valid as it is a US-English Dictionary word but we have one last pass-through that has most common American English phrases that currently only has around 2,000+ but as people report more what they've tried to say and hasn't worked we can add it to the 2nd dictionary for accuracy.
3). Translated Voice Download
Once everything is assumed to be as accurate as possible it will then pass the string through the Bing Translator API and in this case grab the audio from the Bing Translator service and pass it through the App as a "Stream" to download it temporarily (removes every translation or application closing/back button pressed) but only to prepare for output in Mono or Stereo (where available).
4). Translation Output
Once the file is available it immediately streams back out at a specific pitch, frequency, mono playback but made a synthesizer that barely modifies the output a little more to make it louder and easier to understand/sound better on almost any device but more important if Stereo headset/playback is available where most App's just set Mono to Stereo for output but we playback in mono and modify it just a tad and again prepare it if Stereo should occur (Balancing the L/R Channels) but most may not even hear the difference in a loud room but the very least more clear.
Hope this gives you a better insight why a Speechy Pro exists for $0.99 where the free edition is available (1.2) but doesn't have all the features and also has Popup Ad's (60-second delay; Ad may not appear depending on the hourly usage from all the users... This means if 1,000 users used it in a 3-hour time frame or 333/Hr, we disable the Ad for 3-hours as a big THANK YOU but don't think we get paid big bucks, we get about 1-2 pennies per view as we use Smaato for Ads) that aren't really intrusive as you can still record/view/hear with it popping up. Once we hit a specific amount of downloads in the pro edition, we will only continue releasing pro but freely but at this time unsure when that will be but it will just pay for the lighting/power, A/C, Internet, and misc items that we needed to build this.
Thanks!

I am glad you obtained it without any issues. It seems the update is available but the icon is still red, opposed to the new Pro Edition "BLUE" color... Not sure why though but as long as it is V1.2, your safe.
We're already working on getting 1.3 out, we're working on the UI as that seems to be a big complaint.
