I user my Kaiser (Vodafone v1615) as a riggers remote with a theatrical lighting control system.
It uses wifi to connect and I was wondering if there is anyway to boost the performance/range of the wifi? (it uses a web browser to run the control interface)
I no longer use the device as a phone, it is purely used as a remote so I don't mind if any of the other functionality is impaired or if the battery life is shortened.
I guess that I need to try differnet radio versions or ROMs, can anyone point me in the right direction please?
i vaguely remember reading here on xda (emphasis on vaguely) that the wifi performance is NOT affected by the radio ROM version.
also, have you set your wifi Power Save Mode for "Best Performance" as opposed to the default "Best Battery" setting?

I think you are vaguely correct.

Hi, I am fairly new to XDA Developers, I am still trying to get up to speed with the best practice for playing with ROM's etc.
So other than setting "best performance" (first thing I tried), are there no other settings that the ROM cooks can play with? For example, there is already the best performance versus best battery life slider; has no one tried to allow whatever parameters are set for best performance to be "turned up to 11" to quote a certain metal band?
Any help is much appreciated. (My new phone is an unlocked HTC Topaz, if anyone can reccomend the best beginers route for ROMs etc for that I'd be gratefull- I had SPB shell3 on Kaiser which I loved. I like the Diamond 2 interface but prefer some of the SPB stuff)
Apologies for going off topic & off device.
Honestly, don't you think that would have already been done if people knew about it?

Like I said, I'm new to this forum and there seems to be many thousands of posts on what are essentially similar topics; making searching for answers a bit tricky for us noobs.
I try to search old topics on this subject but sometimes the best way to get results is simply to ask.
No worries if there's no positive answers to my query, just thanks to anyone who took the time to have a think about it.
I'm currently waiting for my old phone number to be ported to my new account on my Topaz and then I might be brave enough to try a few custom rom's on the Kaiser. (any reccomendations for someone who likes the SPB stuff?)
wifi riggers
I use my phone for exactly the same thing... in order to boost wifi i just bought a cheap router, placed it in the auditorium and then conect both devices to via dhcp... because the router has no internet connection i remove most of the security and set the router to only allow the mac address of the two devices.. has worked like a charm in all the theatres i have travelled to..

I am looking for a quick and easy way to switch from 3G to Edge (Yes I have a Tilt on AT&T) from the today screen so that I can conserve battery life most of the time but get to 3G quickly.
I thought that phoneAlarm could do it by profile but it doesn't.
Freeware would be great since I am not looking for anything profile, time or location based but at the point I am open to whatever.

Thank you sir.. I have been on the board for too long trying to figure out some flashing things and got lazy.
I have working this issue from the phoneAlarm end as well since it seems to have decided to stop working on me for some reason

Have a great weekend!
I did some more testing and the plot thickens (or at least becomes more complicated) I read here that the Tilt changes bands differently than other WM6 phones (although I have not yet figured out how) so I think that may be part of the problem.
I flashed _Alex_ ' s ultra clean ROM and the only thing I installed was phoneAlarm. The phone was connected to MEdia Net in 3G. When I switched to a profile that did not have 3G (selected as GSM in the options) the connection disconnected and reconnected, but it remained 3G.
The same was true in reverse if I selected a GSM profile and reset it would start is EDGE. If I changed it to 3G profile it would disconnect, reconnect and stay EDGE.
I started checking the comm manager (I am using a 10 button comm manager) and the 3G selector would change with the profile although the band switch would not occur.
What is funny is that if I used the 3G selector on the comm manager the band switched with no problem, following the same behavior patter of disconnecting and reconnecting.
I don't know enough to really dig in any further but I will keep googling how the Tilt changes bands and hopefully one of the more technically adept folks will have something figured out or can give me an assist.

3G and edge use the exact transmitted power! (Always on connection is the main problem!) An Ipod uses Edge which is slow. But what the hey, you have a question and it will be answered here...

That is interesting, because I get significant improvements in battery life if I spend the day on EDGE vs 3G. In fact, my battery rarely lasts more than 3/4 of a day with light phone usage if I am on 3G! This experience would see to be pretty common and I have even seen something that says 3G uses up to 4 times as much power as EDGE. This was supposedly the reason why Apple made the iPhone EDGE not 3G.
I am not bashing you and there may some electrical engineering reason why they use the same transmitted power but real life this translates into something different.

That does it!!! I'm finished...
One of the 10 key Comm Managers works. I don't recall what thread I got it in but it works fine for me.
HTC changed the old way to change the band in tilt. Now It isnt enought to change a registry key and reset the radio device. Now are needed dark and undocumented api calls to htc libraries. Bandswitch and commmgrpro(bandswitch + profiles) do it correctly.

Thanks - I will pass this along to Bruce, who is the phonealarm creator, and is trying to fix this in his next release. Another reason I love the product!!!
Shameless plug for them but it really is an awesome product and the support is great! Worth every freakin' penny!

Uh, you wanna cite your source for that one?
I think HTC have been changing things again as my new Touch Dual, with latest bandswitch does not swap, it will allow the change and it even shows it in the system settings, but remains on 3G

If Apple could have made it 3G they would have. Steve Jobs was quoted in an interview that the reason the iPhone was not released with 3G originally was that the hardware to make it 3G was not out long enough to be tested thoroughly at the time the phone was being built and tested, not the time it was released. Once the decision was made to go Edge, Apple couldn't release a much better phone within a quarter or two so the incentive to get it out sooner went away. I have it on good authority (rumors in the media also confirm this) that the 3G iPhone will be released Q2/Q3 in 2008. Also, given the popularity of the iPhone and Cingular's small but growing 3G network at the time of release, Cingular was concerned that not everyone that bought an iPhone would have been in 3G areas and would have complained about performance. This is why Cingular has seemingly accelerated the roll-out of 3G-ready areas faster over the last few quarters. This comes from a few friends at Cingular.
If a new 3G iPhone will have battery life as long as the current Edge iPhone (removable battery would be the bomb to carry an extra one or extra capacity, it will be a very compelling unit, despite the inability to add 3rd party apps. And to bring this full circle to the thread, if a 3G iPhone allows 3G to be turned on/off, look out Windows mobile....oh, and removable storage capacity, too, and GPS..., and a good IM program...
Try these Comm Managers. They both work perfectly fine on my tilt.
None of these work on the Dual as it moans about permissions when installing.

Go to Settings>System> Memory>Running Programs and Stop the Comm Manager application. Then install the Comm Manager.
That should do the trick.

I am currently using the dutty black 3G and that works perfectly. What I have done is link comm manager to a button so I can access it quickly and switch as needed. Changing comm managers does not address the phoneAlarm issue since phoneAlarm changes reg keys (according to Bruce) and with the Tilt (and maybe the Kaiser) it takes "api calls" or something else I don't fully understand.
If there is anyone who knows how this works and would be willing to share with Bruce over at pocketMax so he can build this into a update release that would be awesome!

Hey folks, is there any good wifi locator or scanning software out there? Not having much luck finding any. Looking for something better than what's on the Fuze.
many

Wow I should've used the term "pocketpc" in my google search, thanks! Do you have preference?
anything to increase my wifi signal strength? lol other than the blackstone radios and stuff cause my device is CID locked or whatever lock its called. i have tried a few of the normal Raphael radios. almost all are battery killers and dont really help my wifi.

Have you tried PeekPocket?
Check out PeekPocket and AiroMap
I use Wefi and Wififofum2. Never got trouble with them
Very Good ONE !!!
http://rs254.rapidshare.com/files/84910367/Pocket_WiFi_Radar_1.3.CAB
that Pocket Wifi Radar is trash... Gets stuck up with WEP/WPA protected network and hangs... It would be logical to move on. Or al least to have a setting to try to connect only to free networks.
I will try that PeekPocket
Thanks guy's! I really like the looks of the Wefi and Wififofum2, thanks gloom.
So my setup. SGS I9000 with JPY 2.2.1 and speedmod K13c.
I have 2 wifi routers, tried to setup one as a repeater but that didnt go well. And I have no idea which mode it is now. But this is what I have:
2 wifi signals (same network, different IP 192.168.1.1 as gateway 1 and 192.168.1.10 gateway 2) on the same channel with the same name (different mac) . This is kinda the only way those 2 wifi routers like each other and worked well before.
Android sees (or should) only one wifi with the stronger signal. And this worked AWESOME some time connecting to the stronger signal almost instantly when it was available (not sure if it was on the stock kernel or there was something else to it too like the 2.1 ROM)
Now it sticks to the signal it gets first. Both routers have strong antennas means I can see the most of the time both (in a third party APP, like wifi analyzer) .
Problems start on the toilette.(Dont judge me ) There I can still see signal from the first floor, but the better router is like 2m away. AND IT WONT SWITCH TO IT. I kinda have to put the phone into my pants and hide it with my hands so it looses the connection and connects to the better router. Also when I go up.
(Its not nice, but I guess better as to run a third party app, I dont like to have it running)
My Hero doesnt have the problems (maybe cuz his wifi antenna is weaker )
So to my question. Leaving the setup I have now. How to change how the android wifi behaves? Meaning it wont stick to the soo much weaker signal (before dying making me "retry" press on every site few times and soo slow)
and makes the switch to a better signal.
Thanks for any answer
(Sorry if doubleposting, am too old for searching. (Nah kidding I did some research before))
Configure your repeater properly, that issue have nothing to do with your SGS. Actualy your SGS act precisely how it should, due to your actual setup.

yay, such a good helper.
First: As I said. The two wifi routers wont work well together. (means I dont have a repeater)
Second: The question wasnt about my setup and how to "fix" it. It was how I can tweak the wifi settings. Now I know there are apps that can do this. I asked if I cant change something in the settings.
Anyway thanks for the reply

Sound you get me wrong...
My point is you can't acheive what you want, since it only work (the way you need it..) with a repeater. About tweaking your wifi setup, i think, you'll have a better answer on a dedicated "wifi" forum, according to your hardware.
Do some google search on DDRT or tomato.
I just give you a fact, sorry if you're not happy with it
Well I would take it as a fact if I didn't know everything is possible . Was thinking about some settings change to how to prefer a network.
Anyway might not be possible NOW, so I did it with Wi-Fi manager and 2 network Widgets and changed the name of the network. If anyone has a better idea I am open for it . And thanks again.

Hi,
My diamond's wifi works only if I set the power mode to Best Performance which is then only available in some ROMs. If power mode is set otherwise, the device can only connects to the router but when there is a network activity, the wifi connection drops.
As a result, I can't use wifi other than those with this setting.
The goal is that I wanted to use wifi on XDANDROID. It seems like XDANDROID also suffers from this problem.
I've tried flashing many other ROMs including a stock ROM as well as using MTTY but this problem is still present. I've also tried many Radios too.
I'd really appreciate if anyone has an idea of how to fix this problem.
Thank you very much.
PS. My problem is the same as described in this thread. However, it is very old and it's also in different forum so I think it's better to create a new one.
Just a question to all the Kaiser users out there.
Do you use the Kaiser with only Android installed as your main phone?
Those that do, have you had any "bad" experiences while using the phone that are NOT caused by network discrepancies (i.e.: dropped calls, bad signal, etc.)?
I ask because I do use mine as my main form of communication on a daily basis, and I had my first dropped call today due to a hard lock. This is after almost a year of use, on the same phone, in different parts of the country with only a couple of days of non-use for screen replacement (scratched/damaged touchscreen).
I know we're all hanging on to old technology for different reasons, wether it be cost, availability, or that certain "wow" factor that comes from completely changing something that was never meant to be changed. I have become fond of my Kaisers for obvious reasons, but if I cannot trust it when I need it I may need to move on.
Thoughts?

Man, you still didn't manage to get WiFi to work ?
Dude my kernel !!
and because of exams i cant get that repaired !!
IDK if your kernel is the issue or not because the radio rom also has a lot to do with some aspects of the hardware controls (phone, wifi, audio, camera, etc.).
Other than checking your wifi.ko file with root explorer or some other text viewer, the only option is to change your rom. I have had a 99% success rate with my Kaiser using only Scoots kernel with 25mb of cache, the 8/29/11 rom from sourceforge and LauncherPro plus (from my personal stash). I have the kernel setting the clock to 500MHz on start up and I usually end up underclocking to 480 for a week or so to check stability against the previous weeks settings.
My camera works, my wifi works, bluetooth works, tethering/hot spot works, but video doesn't (not like I'll EVER use this thing for videos)...

Hi!
I use it as my main phone. After the imap push deactivation i hadn't got any hard lock.
But i use gmail sync, and sometimes i got a screen of death. But it's very very rare (maybe one in a month). I think if i didn't use anything thats related to 3G network, this lock up wouldn't appear.
This is my work phone so it must be stable. I'm satisfied with it.
