Hi to all,
recently i've reinstalled my win xp, everything seems to be working except the AS. When I try syncing the phone with "faster data" enabled, AS does not recognize it, thus it does not connect.
I suspect Comodo Firewall taking part in this problem. I did look for its logfile, but no success (does anyone know where it is stored?). I also met some solutions out there (http://mobiledeveloper.wordpress.com/2006/11/15/activesync-and-comodo-firewall/ for instance), but it did not help.
Any help?
PS: I tried switching Comodo off and AS still does not work. Running XP slightly changed with nLite, don't you know which processes AS needs to be running fine?
When you connect your phone through USB with your PC and wan't to sync with Outlook you should never choose: Diskdrive with faster data, with this option the SD-card becomes a drive in Windows Eplorer and the phone it not reachable by your PC anymore.
This is, as it says, for faster data transmision as in faster draging and dropping music, videos and/or other software.
When you wan't to syncronise with Outlook through Active Sync you need to choose the top option when connecting your phone through USB: Active Sync syncronise with Outlook.
There is no such option as diskdrive with faster data. There is only AS with faster data synchronization.

Don't you get this screen when you connect your TD2 through USB?:

Choose the top most option which is green in this screenshot.
omg of course i do. Try going to All settings - connections - usb to pc and look at AS option (there is "faster data synchronization" right beneath it). That is what i am talking about.
I can very easily tell the difference between mass storage and activesync option.

If you have the second option checked then uncheck it.
(Disabled dit option when ActiveSync does not recognise your phone)
If you have the third option checked then uncheck it because with this one checked ActiveSync will never work!!! as i mentioned before.
OK, now seriously i dont know whether you are kidding me or i am not being clear enough or the problem is somewhere else, but for the third (and hope the last) time i am telling you, when i plug in my htc topaz with ActiveSync option enabled and "faster data sync" enabled" (not Disk drive, for gods sake), my AS does not recognize my HTC. Is it clear enough now?
yes: go to all settings - connections - usb to pc. There is enable faster data sync. I seem to have it enabled (never knew about it) and I have no problems. Might be a problem with the PC
the thing is i installed the same version of nLited xp as i was running before. Strange.
Yes i know what your on about, i had a similar problem.
I have vista and first time i tried to connect phone to pc it would not connect or recognise the phone. I then changed the fast sync option to not be used (i think i did this on the pc not the phone) then the phone was recognised and connected fine.
Maybe you have to change settings on computer and device? anyway the normal speed sync seems to be more then adequate.

Dear zimmicz,
I had the same problem berfore.
The point was that XP firewall was configured with "Don`t allow exceptions" checked.
You have to add AS processes to exceptions list and all will be OK.
Hope this help.

awesome thats exactly it. not windows firewall for me but my avg internet security.
so i presume for the op it will be the same thing. try to find your firewall and try disabling it first and see if iy works. if it doesnt then you gotta try and find which rule is blocking it. if you dont have one try just disabling windows firewall and seeingif that does it like for him.
im glad you found that out cause i would have never suspected my firewall for something like that
I have a related issue:
Normally when inserting a USB cable with the phone unlocked I would get the HTC customised option screen asking if I want to use ActivSync, Disk Drive or Internet Sharing. If nothing was pressed it would default to ActiveSync in a second or two. If the phone was locked it would just connect via Activesync.
However I tried using the Internet Sharing option when the option screen came up once. Now, whenever I connect a USB cable the phone always opens up the Internet Sharing Screen without asking first which to use. Even if I go to Start/Settings/Connections/USB to PC and tick the box for 'Ask me first about USB connection type when I connect the device to the PC' the phone always opens up the Internet Sharing screen.
It seems to have lost the ability to call up the HTC customised option screen to 'Ask me first....' when this option is selected and it always defaults to Internet Sharing - even if I have ActiveSync radio button selected via the USB to PC config screen.
Anybody know how to reset it to normal behaviour (I've tried soft reset)? I can set it to use any of the three options manually using the USB to PC config screen but the auto ask first option seems to be broken.
Cheers, Phil

Check your registry in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\ActiveSync and make sure UseDedicatedSyncConn = 0
If that doesn't solve it, you may have to hard reset to get it back.
Bruce, that key isn't even in the registry - I added it exactly as you wrote it and it made no diffeence to the behaviour even with the value set to 0 or 1.
Just to be clear I can sync via active sync fine - so long as I have manually selected the Activesync radio button in the 'USB to PC' config setting.
The thing which no longer works is the HTC Custom screen which used to pop up when you inserted the USB cable. Now if I have the 'Ask me first...' option ticked in the 'USB to PC' config setting it just fires up the 'Internet Sharing' application.
I did find an executable file in the Windows folder called 'HTCUSBToPCPopUp.exe' (68.9k) which I assume is the software that fires up the HTC option screen when you insert a USB cable - however when I double tap on it nothing happens. Maybe this file is broken or the Registry settings for it are corrupt (how would I find these?)?
Cheers, Phil.

I have had this option checked for a long time until three days ago I found my device could not be connected to my laptop. I tried many ways to get it fixed and finally I unchecked this enable faster data sync and things became to be normal. I have another laptop where I can well connect my device with enable faster data sync being checked.
I do not know why one of my laptop began not to be able to connect my device with enable faster data sync checked.
Hello,
The problem is due to firewall on your pc.
Make sure "Windows Mobile-based Device Connectivity" is marked as Home/Work (Private) and Public in your Windows Firewall.
If you are not using Windows Firewall or disabled it, there may similar options in your 3rd party Firewall. Just make sure Windows Mobile Device is fully allowed.
Thanks...
Best Regards

I'm not quite sure this is the appropriate place to post, so forgive me if it isn't.
I remember some time ago, when still on my magician, that somebody had made a program so that, when connected to a pc via USB, the phone would be seen as a usb pen drive, directly accessing the sd card. I also remember it was only for WM5.
But I switched to Trinity, so now I'm looking for it through all of the forum: I hate to be the lazy b*stard, but I've been searching for the past hour to no avail: every time I key in usb, half of the threads in the forum show up, obviously...
So anybody remember what it's called?
Thanks for any help or indication
WM5Storage
After install you must goto settings> Comunications> USB to PC and uncheck that setting for WM5Storage to work properly. Hope this helps.
Thanks a lot for the quick answer you guys - you're simply great!

Just give me a error... "failed to disable RNDIS to use Serial"
you might need to shut down any background apps that are running. I had WisBar advance running when I tryed and it would not even bring up the screen. When I shut Wisbar down i was able to change the setting. could be a background app or today plugin that is interfering with it.

I think it's probably AvtiveSync, which is almost always runnig in the background, that is causing the error when you uncheck the USB>PC setting.

I solved this problem by deleting (temporary) my com connection to my bluetooth device (GPS).
DHCP client and RNDIS versus USB connection
As i tweak so much over time on my system, my DHCP client was turned off.
That's why my RNDIS device could not connect.
Through my local PC it needed to connect to the network DHCP server. CE seems to do this through XP's DHCP client services.
Turning these services on created the "advanced network connection" to work.
Big advantage to connect like this instead of turning off the RNDIS module and connect through 'normal' USB, is that my PC will now recodnize and automaticaly change from my private phone to my work phone (WM6.0 and WM6.1)
Network capability of my phone is achieved by having the right ip address in the 'external NDIS module' (networkcards). I had to do this manualy. Don't know why but; hey... Without network, still all Active sync options can be used, like installing or removing software, opening the mobile registry etc.
So: 6.1 can turn off the advanced network capability. My 6.0 with a lot of tools cannot.
But They both work better with my PC if I leave it turned on and turn on the DHCP client of my local PC.!
I hope this helps. It was a lovely solution after 5 hours of reading threads.

I have recently reinstalled windows on my computer, and have upgraded to Activesync 4.5 as the other versions are no longer available. When I sync my pda with activesync, I put it in its controller and it syncs email etc... fine.
Then I do something on my desktop and leave it there - I work at home so I want it constantly syncing with my outlook
About 5 minutes after sync, it disconnects, and I have to take it out of its cradle and put it back in again - very annoying!
I am not sure if I have missed some "turn off if inactive for" setting, but I cant work this one out...

same problem with me
I also encounter the same problem after I migrate my BA to WM6, any help guys ? thanks++++
same problem
anyone have any ideas?
I've got a similar problem with my hermes.
Funny, my old angel doesn't have this problem tho.
Anyway, try turning off the 'advanced network functionality' and see if that makes it any more stable.
Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC
Other 'fixes' I've seen mentioned are:
Soft reset the phone
Uninstall, reboot, reinstall ActiveSync
Delete the association between the phone and computer, reestablish
IMO, activesync is a nasty hack that needs to be dragged out back and shot. Start with a clean code base, or make it a strictly backup solution with plugins for extra things, like syncing with outlook. That's how Palm does it, and I never had an issue with my old Palm Pilot not syncing.
Problem solved
turning off the 'advanced network functionality' in Settings-connections-USB to PC solved my Activesync 4.5 - Connection keeps turning off problem.

That's another possibility.
when the 'advanced network functionality' thing is enabled, it enabled the RNDIS part, which makes the phone part of a private network that exists between the phone and the activesync program. Any communication to the phone is then done over a 'network bridge' of sorts. If a firewall or other network security program is running and has not been told to allow that traffic, it will block it and the whole thing will not work.
For the record, I downloaded activesync again and did the 'uninstall, reinstall, doo-da, doo-da' dance. After it reapplied some USB hotfixes that I don't recall from the first time I installed it, my RNDIS dropping issues have gone away.
Of course, it would by nice if microsoft would post the version and build number so we know if there has been an update to it...
EDIT: ...and it looks like I spoke too soon. Sometimes the enhanced network function stuff doesn't kill the connection, other times it does. Bluetooth and USB-serial connections are solid. I'm about ready to trash this hack program and find a 3rd party sync application. This is getting st00pid IMO... Grrr...
Whenever I connect my Tilt (Original WWE HTC TYTN II rom 1.56.405.5 and radio 1.27.12.11 flashed on it) I sometimes get Activesync to connect and sync, and other times it just gets stuck saying "connecting" and the activesync icon is spinning and green permanently. In order to get out of that I have to pull the usb plug, but then the Tilt freezes and I have to do a soft reset. Then after that it connects and syncs fine for a few times and then it has the problem again. I have tried it with the "enabled advanced network functionality" checked and unchecked, and still the same issues. Although, I only tried it once with the box unchecked. Also, what I noticed is that when it is syncing and checking for changes on the device, it reads through my "favorites" like two times beofre it says "connected". I have other PPC synced on other computers and they never read completely through the favorites, once or even twice.
Any help greatly appreciated.

First, a suggestion: Bump your old thread. Don't start a new one!
What other applications do you have running in the background? You said it syncs for a couple of times after soft-reset, so, I am wondering if you have any other applications causing the problem.
Lots of things could be causing your problem. Here are some things for you to try:
1. MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure that you plug your device directly into the computer. Do not plug the device into a USB hub or other device. If you are using a laptop, do not plug the device into USB ports in your docking station. More technically, make sure that the port you are using is a Root USB device, not a Generic USB one. This make quite a difference in Vista, because locking your computer or having a UAC prompt while you are connected to a generic USB device seems to interrupt the connection.
2. Make sure that you have "Advanced Network Funcationality" enabled.
2. Make sure that you have the latest version of ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista). If you are using Vista, the current version is 6.1. This version has some updated drivers that seems to help immensely with stability.
3. If you are using Vista, make sure you have all the latest OS updates installed. There was a Windows Update sometime back in November of 2007 that fixed some serious bugs in the USB drivers in Vista.
4. If you have Windows Firewall Client for ISA installed, do a search on the Microsoft website for possible problems with interactions between ActiveSync/WMDC and the firewall client.
Hope this helps.
Cardyin
In my experience - a year with an 8525 and 5 months with the Tilt - having "Advanced Network Functionality" disabled, gives more consistent positive results when syncing to a PC running XP.
OK.
Sherpa: I have no other applications running in the background. I always close all apps before a sync out of habit.
Also, I am not sure how to bump the thread.
Cardyin: I plug directly into my laptop, don't use a USB hub or anything. I don't have a dcoking station either.
I have the latest version of activesync: 4.5
I am using XP SP2.
I have no firewall.
dgduris: I have tried it both with "advanced network functionality" enabled and disabled, same results.
Thanks for responses
Anyone have any ideas about this problem??
Are you sure you don't have a firewall running? I have a similar problem with ZoneAlarm if I forget and leave the firewall on High security. I have to switch it to Medium security in order for ActiveSync not to freeze up like that.
I am positive, and if it was the firewall, it would do it all the time, not just every four or five syncs.
Anyone else have any ideas??
Anyone at all??
I can't solve the problem but I could advise as to a quicker way to get it synced when it decides to play up.
When mine does the interminable "connecting" business, I click on the "stop sync" button. It usually takes 20 seconds or so to stop.
I then click the "sync" button (same button) and the device always syncs immediately.
I don't know why it does this - and it does it a little too often for my liking - but that solution works for me.
It's a lot quicker than disconnecting and soft resetting too.
1) You say you dont have a firewall... I assume you mean other than the windows firewall. Try turning that off and then plugging it in. If it connects then you know it is a firewall issue. You can manually add the sync apps and ports to the firewall exlcusion list.
2) Try disabling the device lock if you use it. I had a shortlived problem with a pin lock blocking syncing. I disabled the pin, synced and then re-enabled the pin and it worked fine afterwards.
Tried that too...

Right, all I have is the windows firewall. I will disable that and try a few syncs.
As far as device lock or pin, I have none setup on my Tilt.
But Thanks for the responses.
Seems like at least one other person is having this issue. See Sparrowhawks post...
Anyone else have any ideas?? I tried the above advice and still not syncing correctly.
I have tried all the suggestions here and nothing is working. I can get the device to sync only about 3 or 4 times, and then it just keeps saying "looking for changes". I have the AT&T Tilt, with the original WWE HTC rom flashed on it. The way I have to get around this is to click "stop" on my PC and then wait abut 2 to 3 minutes for it to stop attempting to sync, and then when I click on "sync" on my PC it connects no porblem. Or I have to unplug the usb cable and soft reset the device, what a pain!
Anyone have any other ideas please?
I just noticed something else that may help identify the problem.
When I connect the usb cable to the device I get a pop up message from my laptop telling me that my wifi connection is connected and signal strength is good. This message is on the laptop, and then the device will not sync and keeps saying 'looking for changes' forever.

You want to give a little bit more information?
Yes, that would help. What happens when you connect and what version of active sync do you have and what Windows OS are you running?
Step one: make sure you have activesync v. 4.5
step two: disable your norton or mcafee or whatever virus protection you have
step three: go to start, control panel, switch to classic view (on the left side) click on windows firewall and disable it.
it should connect at this point.
leave the device connected and disable one at a time when you hear that little activesync noise you've found the program that was causing the problem. Ta Da! let me know if that works. PM me if anything else.

Sometimes this is a simple cable problem.
Try a different USB Port on your computer, or a different cable. Also check that you haven't damaged the USB connection on your phone (some people do this by poking it with their stylus when trying to soft reset).
I had a similar problem, no idea if it is the same or even similar, but with mine RAPImgr also locked up and spiked the CPU usage to 50% (ie maxed out one of the cores - have a look in task manager). This only started happening with my Kaiser, wasn't happening with the Hermes....
Anyway, the way I solved it was to go to Start -> Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC and disable the "advanced network functionality" (ie uncheck the box).
If I had already plugged the phone into the computer, rapimgr would already be locked up and the only solution was to reboot (killing the process spawns a new one and when you finally find its parent's parent to kill, it takes out something vital which causes the machine to force a reboot).
For it to connect to my Vista box, I have to have this setting enabled. For XP I have to have it disabled.
Hope this is of some help.
I too was having this problem - i uninstalled ActiveSync from my PC and reinstalled it from the MS site - works fine now.
Hi,
I am getting a bit frustrated over this.
When I connect my X1 to my Vista x86 nothing happens (well the USB task tray icon show for about a second and vanishes again).
When I disable the "advanced option" in the USB/PC connection settings in the X1 I at least get a USB connection with something identified as "PocketPC USB Sync".
Any idea why this is happening and how I can get a real connection with the win mobile device center?
Thanks for helping me out!

I've once had the issues of not able to connect my Windows Mobile device with vista too, and it can get very annoying.. good luck with it.
You might want to try and disable the firewall and then connect the device. I had this problem with Sygate Personal Firewall (sygate was bought by symantec and personal firewall is now terminated and no longer available)
Thanks for the quick response guys!
I already tried disabling the firewall (nod32) but that did not help.
Also checked all services - everything is peachy in that department.
But still - no connection.
When I switch back to "legacy mode" (disabling the advanced option in usb/pc settings on the device) then the device will tell me that I need to install active sync 4.5 or higher and wmdc still does not connect.
This is really strange...and annoying and the same time.
Any more ideas or any way for me to debug what's going on?
Thanks for you help!
Have you intalled "Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1" on your Vista-PC?
The MobileDeviceCenter should be standard without the need to install...
At my Vista Home the X1 had no problems to connect.
Open the Mobile Device Center and delete all old connections of other PPC. Then start your PC again, Softreset your X1 and try again. This should help. I had the problems too, when first connecting, because he didn't liked my G900-connection which was first
After this I too could install my G900 again and no problems since yet (2 weeks).

Well sometimes the Mobile Device center could stuff up or not work due to some issues such as installation of Mobile Device Center 6.1 went wrong. I have experienced that I think I didn't follow the procedures correctly and things just wouldn't work. Eventually I had to do some uninstall and reinstall many times to finally get it working.
When I first plugged mine it it installed some drivers but didn't show up in the Mobile Device Center; unplugging and replugging in caused it to work...did you change settings in between plugging in for the second time?
What I have tried so far (and nothing worked):
Uninstall / reinstall WMDC
Uninstall / reinstall Win Mobile Remote Adapter (yes, this does show up once I am connected with "advanced" USB mode)
Uninstall / reinstall "PocketPC USB Sync" (shows when X1 is set to legacy USB mode)
When in "advanced" mode I can also see a new LAN connection showing up in network overview.
The same X1 on a different Vista 32bit right next to this one will connect just fine. So it's definitely about a driver or config thing with this Vista.
This is driving me...well you know what.
btw, you did try restarting your comp when performing some of those steps, and you did try different USB ports right?
I know that you had to ask.
Yes I did. I have rebooted the system several times in between all those reinstallation tasks.
By the way. When I am in USB legacy mode and reconnect the USB cable then the X1 will show a messagebox telling me that it's connecting with the host and that the user credentials / user account (having to translate here) are correct.
But still NO connection visible in WMDC.
I had the same problem with my X1. I assumed that because my HTC Diamond worked the X1 would as well.
I finally installed WMDC from the SE install cd, and bingo!! al good. Hope it works for you...
Wow!
Even though it does not work (yet) it's showing some new signs.
Installing WMDC from SE disc fails at 99% progress and then rolls back.
There's gotta be some installation error log this, right?
Thanks for coming up with that suggestion. Really, I should try installing from vendor CDs more often instead of hunting down the latest version on the net.

maybe give event viewer a try and check under Windows Logs (not sure if it will be application or system tho)
just in case you aren't sure, in vista either type in "Event Viewer" in the start menu search bar, or type in "eventvwr"
Don't you just like vista?
That helped (to install SE's WMDC). The issue was that my HTC Universal was still connected to one USB port (for testing purposes since that device is not recognized either).
As soon as I unplugged the HTC I was able to complete the WMDC installation.
Unfortunately though it still won't connect to my X1.
Any more ideas?
what is your settings in Windows Mobile Device Center connection Settings?
Well here is my settings that is working with my x1:
Allow USB connections checked
Allow connections to "DMA"
This computer is connected to "Automatic" (this shouldn't matter)
Allow automatic device authentication checked
Allow data connection on device when connected to PC (this shouldn't matter either)
also, while this link was in the first link that I have posted for trouble shooting, just want to make sure you actually tried The offical Windows Mobile Device Center troubleshooting guide?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-center-troubleshooting.mspx
namely these steps:

If Windows Live OneCare is installed on your machine, it may be blocking the device connectivity. Please click here for the steps to configure Windows Live OneCare to allow the device to connect.
My device wasn’t connected during this installation.
While it is not a strict requirement that you have a device connected during the installation process of Windows Mobile Device Center, we highly recommend that you do.

I didn't have the DMA set (changed that now). Everything else already was like you described and it does not work.
This really freaks me out. I always hated my iTunes/iPhone connectivity but that honestly works much smoother. Of course I do understand that this behavior is non standard as I have experienced myself that the phone works with my other Vista machine but that does not really help me here.
Any update on this? I am having the same problem.
I'm having the _exact_ same problem too, but in Vista x64. I don't know why WMDC can be such a c**t sometimes, as I have never been able to 'sync' with my Media Center PC.
My only saving grace is that my laptop has Bluetooth, and syncing works great on it. I have never had success connecting the USB cable (with many options changed around of course) to either of these computers. Only Bluetooth syncing works for me...
Hopefully we can find the answer!
What USB cable are you using??? the one that came with Xperia??? Cos the one that came with my Xperia never worked out of the box, it could only charge...
I also got another extra cord which came in another box, that worked fine for both syncing and transferring data until today, now it says USB device not recognized, maybe I was trying the flash X1 with new ROM through SEUS, did the whole lower volume key and power button to get the 3 strips.
Now I am using the USB cable that came with my external HDD, that's currently working, hopefully it won't fail me.
so any ideas??? I don't want to keep changing cables...
