themes - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im using cyan 3.9.6 and I can say the battery is a lot better. Wondering, will themes make my battery usage high and drain fasteR?

cyan 3.9.6 is not a theme,
A theme should not effect your battery, Personally i use kspec oreo theme

It depends on the theme as some of them include extra widgets, apps etc that could run as a system process and thus use up a bit of battery. I previously used the kspec oreo theme as well but I like the speed offered from the default theme.
Also Cyanogen himself has changed the lockscreen so it doesn't use the battery graphics anymore after finding out that it eats up battery when it shouldn't. Functionality over form, and I like it.

Best 2.1 ROM for battery life?

What would you guys recommend as the best 2.1 ROM for maximizing battery life. I'm using CM 5.0.8 right now, but I can practically watch the battery percentage drop as I use it. Is there anything better out there? Would Froyo be better?

i can recommend the beta v3.0 of xillius200's senserom. but you should wait a bit because he is still fixing the home reloads.
you could use the hero rom with another launcher (launcher pro or adw)
the second best battery result i had was on "gammafly" pretty amazing. already had lost faith in froyo but now my phone can take up to 30 hours with some few videos and browsing / chatting
anyway best is donut or cupcake
Buy another battery lol and use them both

[Q] Best settings for build.prop

Which lines should be edited?
Or are there lines which should be added? (if it is even possible...)
The only line i've found, which could/should most likely be edited, is the dalvik.vm.heapsize. Which value do you use for it?
I'm running on stock froyo 2.2.2
Thanks!!
Use either 24 or 32, depends if you plan on running large apps or prefer to have a smooth home and never runs apps that need a lot of ressource.
Actually what I remembered was that the Heapsize was deciding how much could an app use before the Android system would do his "clean" so setting to 24 would give you a smoother overall use but you may lag or f/c when running big applications and settings it to 32 would somehow drain a bit more battery and maybe a less smoother home even if I doubt you can really see the difference.
Anw I think the best setting is 32.
Just tried it with 32M. In quadrant and speedpi there is no in- or decrase of performance.
Subjectively the system (like the drawer) feels a lil bit smoother.
A big benefit is the quick switching between (big) apps. Just launched angry birds, pressed the home-button and opened the browser. After a while i relaunched angry birds and it was that damn fast open.
Regarding to what you said about battery life:
Are you sure, that a bigger heap is consuming more juice? As the garbage collection has to run less often.
just my 2 cents.
any other ideas welcome

So are you looking for a better/faster benchmark?
I'm just looking for the best overall experience (as for longest battery life).

Then heap size is probably one of the last places to start.

Depends on the live wallpaper itself, I'd say read the comments on the one you might be interested in (in the market) and see what people say about its impact on battery life
from experience, id say it doesn't affect battery life all that much, but puts a MAJOR drain on performance, i used to use the microbes live wallpaper, and the ui was slow and laggy, after losing it, was buttery smooth but i guess that it does depend on the specific one you use
You know you can check this down to an exact percentage with multiple third-party battery apps, right?
i am using Koi fish live wallpaper...very sligh impact on the battery...but i always use live wallpapers...it never showed up in the battery graphs in settings
Post 2 and 4, your assumptions don't provide any information on the topic. if all the comments on Market only provide, "works great!, nice, sucks, thanks!", how does that help with diagnostics? and do provide you screen shot of a graph showing the wallpaper running...
@ coffmad and viny2cool,
I'm using a very minimal animated wallpaper. when you touch something on the screen is the only time it moves. and when it moves, again, its minimal as far as animations are concerned. so i'm thinking no significant battery drain.
Another thing I always wanted to know is, when you have an app on the foreground, does an animated wallpaper work in the background?
I was wondering the same thing. I have used a live wallpaper before on my phone (Epic 4g) and found it to take about a 7-10% hit on battery life through out the day. I decided it was too much do to the amount that I use my phone throughout the day. But I've thought about putting one on my TP. If it's less than 5% then I'm in.

Will using a different launcher (Nova) consume more battery?

Just wondering, I don't dislike Sony's launcher but I feel there's too much wasted space and the icons are so big I feel like I have a toy phone.
I have been using Nova (prime) and have not seen any decrease in battery life.
No, nova consumes very little battery so you won't even notice any difference
Sent from my Xperia Z2
Nova is king for that AOSP look/feel but more feature rich. Highly recommend over stock... Which is good to be fair but too bold and didn't utilise the homescreen space to the best degree

[Q] Any study on black/dark themes and AMOLED in terms of battery?

I understand in theory black/dark themes are better for battery life with our Nexus 6 AMOLED screen. Is there any study / testing with results?
Every time I apply a dark/black Layers Theme it seems to make my Nexus 6 less smooth and I don't notice much battery difference. Some themes seem to make it worse.
My N6 runs smooth with black layers theme and I get at least extra 1-1.5 hrs SOT.
Google amoled screen battery life.
This was the first link but there are plenty of others....
