I dont know...it loaded up fine but i dont know if anything is gonna happen later... the sd card is empty though...
what? your asking 2 different questions. wiping will make your fone start fresh. like wiping your butt will clean everything. if you dont you'll run into problems. its not like before where you didnt need to due to the devs only changed minor things. now the roms that are out is rewriten everytime adding different things and what not. so it will conflict whit things on your fone when your adding a new rom.
Sometimes it won't matter, sometimes it will. If it's working fine, then no big deal. But if you start getting random force closes and things like that, wipe, then reflash the rom.

I've been flashing various ROMs, but continuously am running into force close/waits, lag, apps shutting down, but only random reboots on one of the ROM's and it got fixed. I get fc/w's on android.process.acore, calendar storage, alarm clock, you name it, I've probably had it error out on me.
I'm wondering how I can clean up my phone entirely.
I don't know what a ROM writes, or doesn't, but I think I've got something in there that escapes a wipe and a flash that seems to be interfering with the system.
I'm not the only one in the Cyanogen's Experimental thread, nor the lastest stable thread that has had this issue. I haven't been keeping up on the other ROM threads, so I can't say if anyone has had these issues with other ROMs or not.
The Mod on Cyanogen's thread has recently threatened bans for non-ROM -related posts, and to be honest, I don't think this is the ROM because it happens to few, but not all. I'ts not a ROM related question, since it shouldn't matter what ROM I'm using, if I'm rooted, I just want to clean off my phone entirely.
I'm also wondering f these issues could be hardware related, perhaps a different manufacturer of a chip or something.
So, how do I really scrub the thing?
From what I understand, going back to a stock, unrooted phone and going through the rerooting process should "unclutter" things.
I followed this how to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=491350
I think I solved my issue
Going back to an unrooted phone doesn't deal with anything on the apps2sd partition that might be messing things up if I go back to it.
I ended up deleting the ext4 partition on my card and recreating it. The last time I cleaned up, which didn't do the trick, I just deleted everything I saw. I don't know if there was something left in lost&found or something hidden, but that's what I did.
I also flashed from RC29 instead of JF1.5.1. The first time I thought it would be easier to flash to a ROM I had on my PC that already had Terminal Emulator and Telnet already on it than to download the two apps. I don't think anything would get left in place from that, and I think people have had success with flashing CM's from JF, so I doubt it was that, but who knows. I did both just to be sure.
I also didn't enable any swapping, but i can't imagine that swapping would create acore force closes. ???
So, flashing from RC29 and starting from a freshly created ext4 did it for me.
Well i haven't found any 1 with the same problem as my friend. I rooted his white G1 and for weeks it worked perfect now it'll freeze and there is no way to turn it off but by taking the battery off so he does that when powering on its stuck on the G1 screen and unlike others i know it isn't bricked. Reason being i can access (Home+Power) and i think (Camera+Power) but if i wipe and re-flash or flash new theme same thing happens. Any one know whats going on and if there's a solution to made this stop ?
Edit : Forgot to say he has everything the same as i do. 1 click root, danger SPL, lattes radio, RA-dream 1.2.2 recovery IMG. Except this doesnt happen to me.
did you say flash a new theme? themes sometimes do that to roms. they make them unstable. well at least a handful do. does the same problem occur if you just flash a rom and no theme?

Well first it was with Hero on the phone so he believed it was that. Then i installed a donut ROM with a theme and the same keeps happening.
some hero roms freeze as well, especially if you didn't set it up right with all your partitions and such. My suggestions would be to flash over a rom with NO theme and see what happens. Then you can go from there.
What if i flash a ROM with no theme and same keeps happening ? What then ?
hopefully that won't happen, but if it does, I would suggest you reformat the sd card. from there, you can try different roms. every phone is different to certain roms. For example, some phones experience blurry screens when flashing a certain hero rom, but the same thing does not happen with another hero rom. There are a lot of variables to take into consideration. Worse comes to worst, you can try to unroot and reroot the phone, but I am not sure if that would even do anything.
Well thnx for the help. Ill do as told.
Well tazz9690 thnx for your help. My friend just left his phone charging over night and that seemed to have fix his problem. IDK how...
just so he knows... he can reboot by pressing menu+talk+power at the same time so he doesnt need to pull the battery.
reformatting the ext partition may help
I've flashed 6 ROM's in the last 2-3 days just to get a feel for them and see what i like. My question is whether flashing alot over a few days can mess with anything on the phone. I want to see how the ROM's are and see what i want to use (or make my own if i get the time to learn how) but i don't want to mess anything up.
Would if be a good idea to just do a hard reset periodically to make sure i get a good wipe, or am i fine just doing a wipe before any flash i run? I don't want to do anything like brick the phone, or make the market not recognize my phone properly.
I guess i'm just being overly cautious, but i want to make sure i'm not messing anything up. Wouldn't look good at work if it's ME who bricked my phone.
I don't think it will be a problem flashing many roms. What I did when I first tried different roms is that I make notes on why I liked/didn't like it. Some people on here wipe data/factory reset, some people don't. If some roms are upgrades from the previous rom you had, then you don't have to do a wipe. I usually wipe data/factory reset if I'm trying a whole new rom.
You can't really brick your phone as long as you are within the CDMA hero guides. Just don't go flash happy. Make sure you read the instructions.
I definitely am following the directions completely, even double check them just to be sure. I'm not new to flashing ROM's, was doing that on my old windows phones all the time, i just realized that i had never done this many in only a couple days.
I do a factory data wipe/reset each time i try a new ROM, i'm pretty sure I'll be fine, just wanted a second opinion.
Thank you
As long as you follow instructions you'll be fine. I'm on same boat been trying many roms but purehero is a keeper for me. Alysious rocks! !

Ok so this is my first post here, and I'm sort of a noob so I'm sorry if these questions are too noobish...
First, I rooted my HTC hero last night, but I tried to install the rom (fresh 2.3.3) before wiping so I got stuck in this perpetual loop of the startup screen, had to wait until the phone ran out of battery and then did a wipe of data/ext and rebooted. Everything worked fine from there, and it seems to be working normally, BUT I'm wondering if this means everything installed correctly, or if I should just go through the process again.
Second, when I connect my phone to the computer I notice that I have the .zip of the image still in my phone's root. Can I delete this or is it necessary for the phone's function?
Third, are there any other roms people would suggest? I like vanilla android (not a sense fan), and I heard of a rom called Darchdroid. I was wondering how this stacks up to fresh 2.3.3...I'm looking for the smoothest experience possible (not a fan of the minor lag that happens in fresh)
And fourth, if I decide I want to get rid of Fresh and try a new rom, what is the procedure for wiping my phone clean and installing the new rom? (sorta noobish I know...)

a bit noobish myself, but I think I can answer a bit regardless, anyone feel free to correct me...
1: if everything is working, great! if you dont feel comfortable, and dont mind resetting everything up, go ahead, do it again, cant hurt. whenever reflashing/new flashing, Dont Forget to make a nandroid and wipe! (and you can rename the backups in USB disk mode so you know which ones are what, otherwise go by the embedded date in the autogen'd title. in the nandroid folder on your SD card btw)
2: as far as I know, leave it?
3: HUGE fan of Darchs work, cant go wrong... keep in mind it does not have VisVoicemail in it, fix flash needed.
4: reboot into recovery, make a nadroid backup, WIPE!, flash the new one according to cookers intructions! done! (if ya dont like it, buggy, nandroid restore back to your last good one you did like!)
well I reinstalled the rom and wiped first...and everything is running way smoother than last time. I don't know what in the world happened or what was going on but I'll take it as it is
I have flashed a couple roms to my phone I take all the right steps flashing back to stock rom first and all. But any rom I flash after a day my phone starts vibrating and resets it self. Can some one help.
You need to post more info....what rom, what are you restoring after flashing, what are you doing when the problem occurs..
I was flashing cognition 2.3b6, even happens with regular froyo rom. When it resets I'm not doing anything. Just vibrates and resets.
Obviously something is causing your soft reboots.....this can be caused by many things but should not occur unless something is being modified such framework or you are restoring something from 2.1 that is not compatible with 2.2
After you flash to 2.2, what steps do you take, ie do you use titanium backup to restore apps and/or data? Are you applying any mods such as custom battery?
No I don't use nothing besides the rom. I even formatted my card.
Confused then....i have flashed many different roms including cog and have not had problems unless I do something that causes it
I would try a different rom....axura is great, the i9000 ports are nice as well.
Sorry I cannot help more
Before you flash, try wiping the dalvik cache. See if that helps.
Swyping...please read slowly!
don't know how to do that is that the same as the user catch.
