Stuck On G1 Screen - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well i haven't found any 1 with the same problem as my friend. I rooted his white G1 and for weeks it worked perfect now it'll freeze and there is no way to turn it off but by taking the battery off so he does that when powering on its stuck on the G1 screen and unlike others i know it isn't bricked. Reason being i can access (Home+Power) and i think (Camera+Power) but if i wipe and re-flash or flash new theme same thing happens. Any one know whats going on and if there's a solution to made this stop ?
Edit : Forgot to say he has everything the same as i do. 1 click root, danger SPL, lattes radio, RA-dream 1.2.2 recovery IMG. Except this doesnt happen to me.

did you say flash a new theme? themes sometimes do that to roms. they make them unstable. well at least a handful do. does the same problem occur if you just flash a rom and no theme?

Well first it was with Hero on the phone so he believed it was that. Then i installed a donut ROM with a theme and the same keeps happening.

some hero roms freeze as well, especially if you didn't set it up right with all your partitions and such. My suggestions would be to flash over a rom with NO theme and see what happens. Then you can go from there.

What if i flash a ROM with no theme and same keeps happening ? What then ?

hopefully that won't happen, but if it does, I would suggest you reformat the sd card. from there, you can try different roms. every phone is different to certain roms. For example, some phones experience blurry screens when flashing a certain hero rom, but the same thing does not happen with another hero rom. There are a lot of variables to take into consideration. Worse comes to worst, you can try to unroot and reroot the phone, but I am not sure if that would even do anything.

Well thnx for the help. Ill do as told.

Well tazz9690 thnx for your help. My friend just left his phone charging over night and that seemed to have fix his problem. IDK how...

just so he knows... he can reboot by pressing menu+talk+power at the same time so he doesnt need to pull the battery.
reformatting the ext partition may help

Is it stuck at the android screen or is it boot looping? And don't freak.. rooting, if you've done some research isn't too bad.
It was stuck on the android screen. But I wiped the data and installed a fresh copy of cyanogen mod.
So you got past the android logo?
Yes, now I did because I wiped everything and then installed a new copy. So far it seems to be working. Fingers crossed.
Congrats my friend! Enjoy having root.. If you're interested in running hero.. lemme know! I'm running jacx1.5r2 and it's just speedy as all get out. anyway have fun!
Thanks a lot. I have a question is it better to run the cyanogen mod or the jacx rom?
That's a question that only you have an answer for. I don't personally like the xROM but that's because I've tasted Hero and can't let it go When it comes to the different roms if you really want to know how they run, flash and test! This is going to be the best way for you to see the differences between the roms. (also check the rom's change logs. they have information about updates and whatnot)
Last question, do I need to wipe the phone clean before going to different rom or just flash the rom?
Most of the non-hero roms you can flash without wiping. But if you run into bootloops, then you'll need to wipe.
Alright, thanks a lot for the help.

If you plan on trying any Hero roms makes sure you update the new Radio and SPL. And please god make sure you do the RADIO FIRST then the SPL. If you don't do it that way you will have a $400 paperweight.
And my opinion, stick with non-Hero for now. Not saying they aren't good but I have tested all of them for a day or 2 each and even with a class 6 sd card and trying different swap values and sizes they always have some lag. If you are a casual user then I suppose you would be fine, but I have a business to run and cannot afford to miss any calls or texts. I need the web to run and be able to go home without and lag, or to get a quick email out in under a minute. Some people here say its just as fast but I have to disagree for the most part. When the dev's can get these new sets of hero rom's to be fully stable/optimized maybe I will try again but if you rely on your phone like I do then you may want to stick with cyan/xrom/jf for now.

Unable to flash Anything else

i have done quite a few searches on this and yet have found nothing so i hope i dont get reamed for posting this.
if someone has a link for this answer id be very thankful.
if not then PLEASE SOMEONE EXPLAIN!!!!!!!
at the moment i am running drizzy hero rom. to do the update i did use the one touch root. on a second phone i did it manually. on both i added the hard spl and am running the RA v 1.2.1 recovery. I liked this ROM and wanted to see what bugs it had. after a few days i wanted to switch and try a different ROM I have dl most of the ROMs available and already have them on my sdcard once i did this no ROM would load except for Drizzy(new Vision v2.8). after trying a few things and accomplishing nothing i decided to redo EVERYTHING. unrooted my phone rooted again applied recovery made sure radio was to date and spl. and still nothing i cant even run the original jf1.5 that i was using before deciding to port. this issue is occuring on both phones. 1st phone was again done with one step root and the 2nd phone was done completly manually. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to try these other roms SO PLEASE SOMEONE HELP. if you need more information on what i did with these phones ill gladly tell you step by step on what i did.
sorry for that.
I was using my G1 and also had a friends. On my g1 i used the one step root. I used the Instructions from The Unlocker.com. It uses flashrec.apk and also Amon Ra's recovery image. After that i went over to the How to Load a Custom ROM. same site. It asks you to check the Radio and the Spl. The radio is 2.22.19.26I and the spl used was the HARDSPL 1.33.2005.
Once i finished that i went and formated the sdcard to Fat32+Ext2+LinuxSwap also converted Ext2 to Ext3.Then I did-Move Dalvik Cache to SD. last 3 steps to speed up hero. after all of that I loaded 4 ROMS CyanogenMod ROM, jACXHeroSkiv Hero ROM v1.8, Drizzy’s NewVision TouchFlo ROM, and JF v1.5 Cupcake ROM. I have only flashed Drizzy's until last night.
I was unable to flash any other one and when i flashed back to drizzy I had problems loading it back but eventually loaded fully the issue was running the startup wizard it kept crashing. after a reboot it was ok.

did you do a data wipe? you need to wipe going from hero to cupcake/donut
When I first did all of that I did. Am I supposed to data wipe everytime I switch the Rom?

when your using hero rom's, yes.
if your upgrading cupcake roms (ie cyan 4.0.4 to 4.1.9.2 ), no
If its not working, WIPE
you cant go from hero to cupcake without wiping and not expect a lot of problems. they cause too many issues.
hero roms use the data partition differently
also remember to wipe /system/sd/ to clear all of that out. pull your /system/sd/ to your computer first though
thanks you guys it helped alot

[Q] Some hero rooting/rom questions.

Ok so this is my first post here, and I'm sort of a noob so I'm sorry if these questions are too noobish...
First, I rooted my HTC hero last night, but I tried to install the rom (fresh 2.3.3) before wiping so I got stuck in this perpetual loop of the startup screen, had to wait until the phone ran out of battery and then did a wipe of data/ext and rebooted. Everything worked fine from there, and it seems to be working normally, BUT I'm wondering if this means everything installed correctly, or if I should just go through the process again.
Second, when I connect my phone to the computer I notice that I have the .zip of the image still in my phone's root. Can I delete this or is it necessary for the phone's function?
Third, are there any other roms people would suggest? I like vanilla android (not a sense fan), and I heard of a rom called Darchdroid. I was wondering how this stacks up to fresh 2.3.3...I'm looking for the smoothest experience possible (not a fan of the minor lag that happens in fresh)
And fourth, if I decide I want to get rid of Fresh and try a new rom, what is the procedure for wiping my phone clean and installing the new rom? (sorta noobish I know...)

a bit noobish myself, but I think I can answer a bit regardless, anyone feel free to correct me...
1: if everything is working, great! if you dont feel comfortable, and dont mind resetting everything up, go ahead, do it again, cant hurt. whenever reflashing/new flashing, Dont Forget to make a nandroid and wipe! (and you can rename the backups in USB disk mode so you know which ones are what, otherwise go by the embedded date in the autogen'd title. in the nandroid folder on your SD card btw)
2: as far as I know, leave it?
3: HUGE fan of Darchs work, cant go wrong... keep in mind it does not have VisVoicemail in it, fix flash needed.
4: reboot into recovery, make a nadroid backup, WIPE!, flash the new one according to cookers intructions! done! (if ya dont like it, buggy, nandroid restore back to your last good one you did like!)
well I reinstalled the rom and wiped first...and everything is running way smoother than last time. I don't know what in the world happened or what was going on but I'll take it as it is

[Q] HTC Hero looping on the boot screen. How can this be fixed?

Phone: HTC Hero, CDMA
Carrier: Sprint
While others have reported of this problem, the solutions that worked for them dont work for me. Im really stuck.
I know, its an old and slow phone, but I was hoping to go to CM7 to get better performance out of it. Well, I must have done something wrong in the process. My current android version is 2.1-update1. I used z4root to root it and used the clockworkmod ROM manager to install a recent nightly after backing-up my current ROM. Installing the nightly failed, something to do with the zip, but my phone had already been wiped and rebooted in default factory mode. I tried doing the install again with the same nightly and a more recent one, but it kept failing due to a problem with the zips. After one of the reboots, the OS just wouldnt load; seems to be looping on the 'HTC quietly brilliant' screen. I am able to boot in recovery mode, but cant figure out how to get past this looping issue.
Ive tried booting using the back-up I created with no luck. Ive even tried going through the RUU process (cant post a link cause Im a new member here), which results in an error message stating that theres an incorrect bootloader.
I did figure out that I was trying to install CM7 using the wrong zip; had the GSM version. Ive tried installing CM7 with the correct zip, but, after reboot, it loops at the animation with the android on the skateboard and the blue arrow around it. Not sure what it means that the two different OSs loop at, what looks like, the same points.
I probably did something wrong, but Im hoping somebody with a better understanding of all thats involved can let me know if there is any way for me to fix this. Thanks in advance for the help.

I *think* your error, in general, was using a bunch of "easy" one click methods and not properly learning (READING) about what the proper steps are. Here is my advice (assuming you are still rooted) -
1.boot into recovery (power off phone, hold home button, press power)
2.wipe data/factory reset
3.mounts/storage - wipe system and boot
4.restore nand backup OR flash ROM/gapps (from the same thread)
5.reboot, and be patient, bootup could take 5-10 minutes.
Good Luck.
You are the man (or woman)! I believe the formatting of system and boot is what did it. Really appreciate the help.

It is important, as Il Duce said, that you definitely do a good amount of reading when you want to get involved in rooting your phone. You are opening yourself up to some great innovation and fun, but you can also cause yourself a lot of headaches.
Recovery is your friend. If you can get into that, at least you know things are ok. I like to wipe (or format) system, data, cache, and boot 3x just to make sure that clockwork recovery cleaned everything and there are no dingleberries from the last rom I was using.
Flashing the correct type of rom is even more important. Don't flash a gsm rom to a cdma phone and NEVER flash a gsm radio to a cdma phone. Once you delve into the reading aspect of XDA, you will see that is the sure way to brick your phone.
Some roms take longer than others to boot up. Let it run its course. Sometimes it will reboot right after installing. At some point, you might want to make a nandroid of the new rom you are running and go back to your stock (2.1 update 1) and update your PRL, baseband, etc. (if you haven't done an update in a while).
Have fun, that is the most important part and we seem to have a lot of it here in HeroC XDA land.
You know, I put in a fair share of reading about how to update the ROM on my phone and I was under the impression that it would be fairly simple. I figured that since this has been done for quite a while and all these tools have been developed, I wouldnt need to know what happens on the back end during a root or ROM install.
But I did get myself into a bind that I wasnt able to figure out on my own. And with the help of this forum, I was able to get past my problem. Im glad to say I now have a phone that is functioning very smoothly with CM7 and the apps I need.
Next step for me is figuring out how to save my apps to the SD card so that I can install from there if/when I update my ROM in the future.
Thanks again for the help!
Get titanium backup FTW.

[Q] FASTY III problem/question

HI!
Just recently signed up so I can't seem to post this question in the FASTY III forum....I kind of understand why xda has this policy about new members not being able to post int he developmental forums...but still...
I recently moved from FASTY II to III...ran into a bunch of issues but I managed to resolve most of them by going through the forums. What I am having trouble with is my inability to get to the Recovery menu. I have tried to go there thru the shutdown menu, by doing the button holding trick, and even from ROM Manager... none of those seem to work for me. Very frustrating... All those mentioned attempts only bring up an ATT screen which wont go away until I reboot the phone into a normal start....
So why am I unable to enter Recovery mode?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I have been having the same problem recently, but not just with this rom. I have flashed many roms to my device, but it appears that almost everytime i try to flash something now, the same exact thing happens as the OP. any information on what is wrong or how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
When you boot up...do you guys get a scrambled screen that looks like white noise?
that's caused by froyo bootloaders on a gingerbread ROM.
Not all That familiar with fasty though...dunno of the jump from 2 to 3 was froyo to ginger, just a guess.

Sometimes this happens, but i am usually still able to use the rom after i wait for awhile. Recently it just gets stuck at the ATT logo screen and does nothing else.
HERE is a package containing JUST the ginger boots.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD PHONE/PC CONNECTION, FLASHING BOOTLOADERS IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRULY HARD BRICK

i just tried it with a solid connection and it almost instantly said failed in the red box. now i cant turn it on or get to download mode so im pretty sure it is hard bricked. is there any way you can help me with this?
EDIT: False alarm, i can still get to download mode so i can ODIN back to stock, but i do not know if i should risk it again
Whew that was close.
You can flash to stock using a bootloader less package, that way if it fails it can't hard brick.
Then if that works, find an entire stock gingerbread package with bootloaders included, and flash that instead of just the bootloader one click. this again, will involve risk, but full Odin package seem to work better on some phones than one clicks do.
I tried to flash the bootloader again and it succeeded. i then proceeded to try and flash Fasty KK4 v1.1 and once again i was stuck at the ATT logo. For some reason with every rom i flash, when the logo pops up, it starts dim and then get bright. After it gets bright, it stays that way and it is a real pain not being able to use custom roms anymore.
If you have the GB bls just make sure you follow LL's instructions in the OP for Fasty. I had the same issue, but it was me mistake for not following the istructions properly

i DO get a very colorful white noise screen whenever it boots up ...the screen goes away once it fully reboots....I wondered about it but just assumed it was a quirk of the FASTY III package...
Is Rom Manager a froyo based app?
No, ROM manager is poop. Not implemented on galaxy devices properly, and won't work past eclair, and even them it was severely limited to just downloading an update.zip to your sdcard...which you could put there manually with out having to root...
FORGET ROM MANAGER EXISTS

Really? Rom Manager helped me a lot until this Fasty III installation....even in my previous rom Fasty II it worked fine and did great for backing up and restoring backups....saved my asss a few times with those restores lol....But if this program doesn't work for fasty III what comparable program can I use?
Also I still can't intorecovery mode...nothing works...I even tried using ADB and Droid Explorer....nothing seems to get it into recovery mode...
Am I going to have to flash back to stock ROM and try reinstalling fasty iii again? This seems all so tedious lol...
OR is there a way for me to flash back to Fasty II without having to go back to stock rom? or without having to access the recovery screen?
Thank you^
All that backing up and restoring you did with ROM manager can be done in cwm recovery and that's what you should use from now on. No app needed at all.
Follow the instructions I've already provided in this thread. You'll either need Odin to flash the gingerbread bootloaders,
or to go back to a froyo firmware, first flash a froyo kernel with Odin and THEN the froyo ROM. stock isn't needed.
Recovery in a gingerbread kernel is completely inaccessible with froyo bootloaders.

Thank you for the info!
Looks like fasty III is a GB based mod after all...I guess I should read up more on the rom before installing lol....I did not expect the dev to go from froyo to gb -_-
I was thinking of using your previous post for the one click gb bootloaders only....but it seems a little iffy and I can't afford to hardware brick the phone lol...
Makes me wonder tho...is it really THAT risky to flash bootloaders? It would make things simpler if i could just flash the gb bootloaders and go from there....
the whole flash should take less than a minute, where the actual writing takes only a few seconds...but if you were to lose communication in that awful window then it would be bad day.
But that is a small window, and if you have never had connection issues you should be ok if Odin tends to be iffy, you van try heimdall I've heard that works better for some.
Still haven't tried flashing the bootloaders because i'm scared of the possibility of hard bricking my phone... If worst case scenario was to happen and it gets hard bricked....are there any options to restore that phone? or is it just paper weight after?
Also until I flash those bootloaders there is no way to back up my phone or anything?
Thanks for all ur help btw!
another issue i am having is that the phone seems pretty laggy after installing this rom...even with tegra overclock premium and tweaking it up to 1252mhz 1275mv 1100mv setting...it still seems laggy when opening sms etc....is this just the results of a bad rom install? also battery life seems crappy....even after doing the battery recalibration...of course i couldn't wipe the battery stats since i cant get into recovery...
Hard bricks are recoverable by a hardware modification known as unbrickable mod, search for user Adam outler, or go to mobiletechvideos.com they both offer this service if you're not a soldering expert.
Battery recalibration does NOTHING the stats are reset everytime you charge to 100, and besides that they don't calculate your current battery level, just what's been using it, its what's used in settings> about phone> battery use. It has nothing to do with extending battery life.
oh lol...i have been reading all these threads where people are talking about how much their battery life improved after they did the recalibration and stat wipe ....well anyways I am going to attempt the bootloader flashing...I hope everything goes well! after that I want to try reflashing the fasty III ROM...
Do you have any recommendations as far as a good ROM for teh captivate? One that doesn't lag and has good gps & battery life? I would appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks!
