The tutorials over at the unlockr are pretty descent. I've had many conversations with David and he is pretty adamant about making sure his videos are accurate. I would start again from the beginning. I tested his tutorials when I unrooted my phone and went back to stock, then rerooted, installed a custom radio, ROM, and theme, then followed his Hero tutorial. The information is sound and worked well for me. This leads me to believe that you aren't following the steps exactly.
And no...... wiping your phone does not take away root access. What ROM are you currently running? Have you installed Cyanogen's recovery image? Have you upgraded your radio and SPL?
No I am trying to get it now but the terminal emulator wont work for me all i get is permission denied
no wiping does not take away root access...
just make sure you have followed instructions to the bone, i personally like this tutorial.

I'm not understanding what you are trying to "get" in terminal emulator. Are you still on the RC29 (DREAIMG.nbh) ROM after you did the root steps? If that is the case and you are getting permission denied when you su, then it seems as though your rooting was unsuccessful. You might want to check your steps again. If you mean its the ROM you are trying to get in terminal, just download the custom ROM to your computer, rename it to update.zip and flash it. No need for terminal to do this.....Flash the ROM you want and all your troubles will disappear with a fresh install. Its like a do-over haha
Also, you left several of my questions from above unanswered...the process of troubleshooting works best when you provide requested information....
And as Tarantino5 ^^above^^ me pointed out, your title leaves a lot to be desired. I brief statement of the problem is all the title need include.
i got it working...thanks for all your help...and sorry about the title i was just worried about my phone...thanks
Sounds good, glad it worked out...could you please edit your title so it has a [SOLVED] it front of it similar to the other threads? Its just a small way of keeping track of whats still unanswered...thanks

Hello Xda-Developers..
Well to make a very very long story short.. I got major phone problems. It started when I decided to Mod. My phone and followed a guide on Youtube to Mod/Jailbreak your phone. And I must admit it worked.. But it took a toll on me. Ok this is exactly what I did.. I moved the Dreamin.nbh file into my SD card.. Held down the Power + Camera button and everything seemed ok. Basically I followed everything step by step and it worked ok.. When I was finished rooting it I installed Jfrek-Rc33 followed the steps to do that.. When I got it on I was very excited.. after. While of reading about it I decided to go and get my old Apps back on my phone.. I went on the market and I couldn't find any of them.. I looked into downloading it online and I still couldn't... Did I do something wrong?? I looked around and didn't find anyone with this problem. I am now running RC-29... so where do I go from here =(... I'm regreting doin this -cries-
PROBLEM SOLVED
How did i solve my problem...?
1. When i modded my phone i rooted it normally and installed a version of JF-RC33.. Turns out this version wasn't compatible with the Market and i could not see a bunch of apps that i previously had with no problem.. So i downgraded to RC29 again and re-rooted my phone following This Guide.
2. After i followed that guide i installed CyanogenMod V4.0.4 Witch turned out to be pretty awesome.. And exactly what i was looking for.
3. Fingerlickin asked me to install a recovery but i had no idea.. What this "recovery" would do.. Until he explained a little and its actually something like a windows restore point just for your G1 witch you can get by following this guide and its majorly recommended.. .
Note: I didn't really understand the Recovery guide.. Until Fingerlickin guided me step by step.. (lol) With the installation of CyanogenMod you should have an APP called Terminal Emulator.. Click on it.. And type SU and hit enter. After that it should ask you if you want to allow this and just hit "Allow" When you move on the next screen type flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img and hit enter again. Next hit home and reboot in recovery mode by hitting Home + Power button... and there should be a couple of options different than before and just hit ALT + B or scroll to "nandroid backup". And tada! you created a restore point =)
4. Next i installed the RaDio from This website this "radio" is pretty much the "drivers" for your phone.. .. Anyways after installing the recovery you can install zip files into your phone without renaming them.. So just download that file put it into your SD card and turn your phone off.. Turn it on in recovery mode (home+power) and hit Alt + A or scroll down to "apply any zip from sd" and there you go! got your Radio on and you should be all set =)
So following those steps is how i fixed my problem.. Of course thanks to Fingerlickin for his awesome patience with me lol.. as you can tell. Hopefully someone uses this little guide i put together and if they have the same problem they now have something to turn to for a solution =D. Thanks again to Fingerlickin.
.. OK bye now. *walks out and closes the door*
going back to rc29 removed you root, follow the root process again but instead of installing JF, use cyanogen 4.0.4 (stable) when you're done we can look into what ever problem you are having with the market which I am unclear what that problem is at this point but it doesn't matter.
Sorry to be soo uninformed about this.. But by reroot do you mean download Telnet + Terminal Emulator.. And do that process again? But right now while running Rc29 I have the Wifi tether for root users.. and its working wouldn't that mean that I do have root?.. Just wondering >.<
As long as you keep using RC29 you have root.
You also have an invite on gtalk
You can use this guide here to help out with your rooting woes ^_^

You can also use the one-click root method. the app is on the forums.

Does the One-Click-Root method still work? As I've read mobiles after August, Google had already patched the exploit?

i have heard that google has had the exploit long since patched, but that it is up to the carriers to send out the update. it will mostly be done away with when donut is released.
since he was running a JF ROM he would be able to do the one-click-root, but david and neoblade is right I've heard alot of people with new phones say it doesn't work.
Cyanogen has also patched it in his ROM's.
I didn't realize carriers already sent out the OTA's. Last I heard was that it would be sent along with donut like david mentioned
this is what happened.
i bought my girlfriend a g1 for her birthday and it had 1.6 installed already but i wanted to get root for her. so i downloaded this thing called dreamimg.nbh and installed it and the rom went back to 1.0
i rooted it but not with cyanogen's 1.4 its some crappy yellow writing root. and i cant get any custom roms to install and it says "android system recovery utility E: can't open /cache/recovery/command. also no apps that i backed up with astro will install on 1.0. terminal will not work. i type "su" and it says access denied.
please for the love of god help me get rid of this crappy root and help me get a custom rom.
I would suggest starting over. Read this thread and follow the rooting instructions exactly. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563679
p.s. That yellow writing isn't "root". Its the recovery utility.

ok so i am trying to register my new g1(from ebay) but i dont have a sim card that has a data plan. so i have been trying to get access to the adb mode to bypass the registration. this is what i've done so far:
1. downgraded to rc29
2. installed sdk
3. installed adb driver
this is where im getting stuck, when i go to the cmd to see if my g1 is connected, my computer says "adb is not a vaild command or program" So i dont know what to do next. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
oh one other thing for some reason when i click on the adb program in the sdk it opens for about 3sec then closes.....any ideas??
thanks
You could root your G1 and load a custom 1.6 ROM such as Cyanogen's 4.2.14.1 or SuperD v1.7. Or, you could even load an Eclair or Hero rom if you're curious
I followed this guide to root my G1 and load the RA Recovery Image 1.5.2. Be sure to watch both parts
[The kid that makes the videos also has many other videos of him demo-ing custom ROM's and a tutorial on how to install them.]
On many of the custom ROM's, there's a "skip" button when you get to registration to bypass it.
This page has many ROM's that you can download and try out. Caveat: wipe before installing a new ROM.
I'm not responsible for any damage done to your G1 as i have only shown you other people's creations and methods; i take no credit
he cant install them if he just downgraded.
you need to make sure your path is set up correctly. if you havent gotten it to work, the guys at androidoverdrive.com will help you

Yes, this is exactly what I did with mine, and it worked great!
Hey guys,
First of all, thank you for spending time on reading this thread, I really need your help.
I wanted to root my phone (G1) etc. etc. So I downgraded it but didn't like it at all! So I descided to move back up again (latest software version).
I spent hours on the internet searching for software, firmware etc. And I managed to set my phone to RC33 and firmware version 1.1 ... Now my phone is not what it used to be, I guess firmware version 1.1 is kinda old isn't it? Strange enough my phone says it already is fully up to date...
So my question is; could you guys help me out, with getting the latest firmware/software whatever?
Thank you in advance!
Well, what you could do is: Go back to the earliest framework specified in say the cyanogenmod rom, which is RC29. Use that to flash your phone to gain root. It will be very odd looking because it the lowest thing. But then you can flash the awesomness of cyanogen onto it and you'll be good to go.
Also what you said you wanted to root it, so you downgraded. That is but the first step needed. i wouldnt want to stay there either. So yeah follow that guide and you should be on your way.
Although I will admit that it is probably the best running firmware for the G1 thus far!

So in "short" you'd advise me to:
Downgrade to RD29 *again*
Get my phone rooted
And install the cyanogenmod Rom
Is that correct? Now I don't see all the applications on the Android Market, some disappeared, will they return?
In short, yes. I know it seems odd to downgrade to upgrade. But to gain root you have to use RC29. To gain root its not too bad. you have to use RC29 to do it. You just install that. start it up. And then download the app "telnet" from the market. and then run a few commands. from there you can upgrade back up. And yes you should see everything in the market. Yeah its kinda annoying but there are some great results possible.
A more in depth set of instructions is located on the Cyanogen wiki. I cant post a direct link due to my account status but google "how to install cyanogenmod" and its about the 3rd result.
Got stuck...

Okay, so here's what I did. I downgraded my G1 to RC29, rooted it successfully. Downloaded the latest cyanogenmod, named it setup.zip, went to recovery mode, did a factory reset and installed the setup.zip. Now my G1 won't get past the load screen (which says G1). What did I do wrong?? I can get still into recovery mode...
Thanks for the help so far!
So I came up with an idea, I need to add a new update.zip how to connect to the computer through recovery mode??
aww, noob threads are cute!

Thanks! That did the job. Why does this ROM feel so slow??
Thank you again guys!
There are a couple threads running around about Root, Super User, Side Load....
I'm not an expert...but I know a bit...It seems to me, The easiest way to get your True SU Root is
1. Run the "Side Load" Nooter Procedure. (this is the one with the SD Cards machinations) discussed in the Bible length Thread here, and step by stepped on NookDevs Here.
2. Run the APK "in device install" procedures (the SQLite stuff) discussed here.
3. Then, run Z4Root, found in the android Market.
As far as I know...this is the path to full SU Root.
I would highly ... highly ... highly .... did I mention highly .... recommend installing the Home Button Softkeys app....once you get all three steps above completed...
After all of these were done....I could drive my Nook in a fashion I am used to ... pretty close to my phone experience.
Z4root is attached if anyone need it. Thanks
Can you do z4root even if you already pushed the su.apk and other file? I also noticed it pushes busybox?
Thanks, I have it waiting in my Dropbox
Reading over the z4root thread it seems to indicate use on 2.2(Froyo) while the NC is 2.1 ... ???

I don't think it is correct to call this "sideload." It is important to keep terminology correct, for proper discourse and because of search engines. Sideloading really refers to apps, I think. Pokey calls his solution "nooter."

I'll start a new thread over in the apps section to discuss Z4Root..let's take this discussion over there.
nevermind i had the completely wrong app!
i tried to do permanent root but it didn't work. i tried temporary and it worked. while it was temp rooted i attempted to 're-root' with z4, it rebooted and i had lost root.
So looks like I have to do the temp root for now. I wonder if finding out why i can't perma-root will explain something to us about how the NC works. How does the z4 exploit work?
A quick thanks to this thread and all those who worked towards achieving root elswhere as well.
Received an NC yesterday, made sure it worked and then voided the warranty.
The procedure listed in this thread worked just fine for mine, done using linux and .apks from a Droid.
