EDIT: Solved. Followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532419 and everything works now.
So I followed haykuro's "Rogers, heres your real root" thread here to try to get my Rogers G1 rooted.
Since my G1 is 1.33.0009 (for some reason), I started with flashing the SPL. Downloaded the spl, renamed it to update.zip, copied it into sd card root, started the phone in recovery mode and tried flashing it. I got the following error:
Installing from sdcard...
Finding Update package...
Opening update package..
verifying update package...
E:No Signature files(5 Files)
E:Verification failed
installation aborted
Apparently somebody had the same problem and replied in haykuro's thread but nobody answered it. So I guess I should start a thread here to bring this up.
I am completely new to g1 and all the flashing stuff. Please consider me a noob who just read some of the how-to posts in this forum.
Any help is appreciated.

I am selling my Dream to get a hero, but the buyer wanted the phone back to factory defaults and unrooted. So I followed a guide from this site to restore the phone, but now I get an error that installation aborted when I try to update to 1.6. Can someone point me to a trouble shooting direction?
where exactly on the unroot process are you?
Also are you installing the official 1.6 update or a modified one?
Ok. Posted this in general and now here.
I have an unlocked N1. I have wiped, restored and am now on 2.1
when i restart i get the over the air update..it downloads and verifies and then doesnt install and i get update was aborted message.
what am i doing wrong.
thankyou.
getting super frustrated here.
Ok...so now I am trying to go from ERD79 to FRF85? and I still fail.
Ideas?
firmware 2.1
build ERD79
I recently bought a nexus one from vodafone, which came with vodafone's version of froyo FRF91 pre-installed. I wanted to get future OTA updates direct from google so I unlocked the bootloader, and downgraded to ERD79 using this guide:
(can't post links, but if you copy 'how to upgrade your nexus one today' into google, it's the first result - this is the guide i followed)
This all worked fine and i'm now on ERD79, but I cannot upgrade any further than ERD79. When I search for OTA updates using the "check in" command, it finds none and still says my system is up to date.
I also cannot update from the sd card using the update.zip method, as I get the following error:
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
I have done this before on another vodafone nexus one using exactly the same method and it worked fine. On the first phone, after downgrading to ERD79, the froyo OTA update began immediately. The only difference was that in that case, the phone did not have froyo to begin with, this time vodafones version of froyo was already installed.
If anybody has any clue as to why the phone will not download an OTA update, I'd be really really grateful if you could let me know!
Thanks
If you unlocked your bootloader - why wouldn't you just flash a custom ROM?

I unlocked it in order to get install stock froyo, so I would immediate future updates from google, rather than having to wait for vodafone to release their own version.
Why don't you instal Geo411m's rom? It's almost stock...(I really like it)
And as soon as the new OTA update is available you will find it here (and most likely it will be rooted asap)
What file did you use when you renamed to update.zip? From what i did. I downgraded to EPE76 then downloaded signed FRF85B. from EPE76 it said my system was up to date. but when i manually updated to FRF85B and checked the system updates it auto downloaded FRF91.
I used "PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_1.01.1700.1_ERD79_release_signed.zip" with fast boot to get ERD79 and then attempted to use "signed-passion-ERE27-from-ERD79.a487b405.zip" on the sd card to update. Then i get the error.
Appreciate the help guys,
Have you tried this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717870&highlight=FRF91+downgrade
Second post. is the PASSIMG.zip. place in sdcard and boot into bootloader.
This takes you to EPE76.
then download FRF85B
http://www.mediafire.com/?j5zejudgngm
rename to update.zip. boot into stock recovery (triangle with android) then hold power and hit volume up, select update.zip
Ok I tried that and I got an error 'main version is older'.
I am downloading "PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_1.11.1700.1_EPE76_release_signed.zip" now to try and do the same with that, or is that the same file that was called PASSIMG.zip in the thread you linked?
Have you looked into this thread?
http://android.modaco.com/content/g...-online-kitchen-optional-root-insecure-himem/
Yes i have that thread bookmarked but it's not helping me much right now unfortunately
I managed to get onto EPE76 by flashing the boot, recovery and system .img files using fastboot. But when i try to update to frf85b with the sdcard method i get the same error:
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Ok, I tried updating with the sd card method using RA custom recovery - it gives the error:
E: No signature (575files)
E: Verification failed
Installation aborted
Solved this now. In case anyone else has had this problem, it is related to the vodafone froyo versions having HBOOT 0.35.0017. Follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726258 to change that and go back to a version that allows updating
Hey,
I've been looking everywhere and I can't seem to find someone as unlucky as me... lol!
Thing is that the 3 button combo has never worked for me, but clockworkmod USED to.
After I flashed to Cog 2.2, it is giving me this error:
-- Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole file signature
E:signature verification failed
-- Applying Multi-CSC...
Installing Multi-CSC
Installation aborted.
Now, I have read that some people have flashed with Odin to JF6, then reflashed to JI6 to end with Cog 2.2 and the clockworkmod works for them... BUT, since I can't do the god damned 3 button combo, that's not an option for me.
Any ideas? I'd like to go back to 2.1, I don't know why but Cog 2.2 is painfully slow on my captivate, even with the OneClick Lagfix... clockworkmod was my only option and now I found that it stopped working for no specific reason.
Now, I understand that the recovery moves into clockworkmod when you choose "resinstall packages"... and I was thinking that, maybe if someone shares the update.zip that clockwork creates, one that WORKS, maybe I can try that and see?
This became frustrating after almost 2 hours reading and googling everything I could think of
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Clockwork MOD does not work with Froyo...your only options is to flash back to stock using the one click odin for JF6 and then root and install clockwork mod. From there if you have your backups saved then you can get back to 2.1 with the way you had it setup when you backed it up..
Well, that would be awesome!
CAn I do that without being able to do the 3 button combo? Or the next option is to wait until CLockwork supports froyo?
Plug in your phone through USB and open one click Odin for JF6 then open a command prompt and go to the tools folder of the android SDK. Then type 'adb reboot download'. Of course you have to have USB debugging enabled and the SDK installed to do this.
LOL, read the Cognition FAQ's, first link on the thread... YOU SHOULD HAVE READ IT BEFORE YOU DOWNLOADED THE ROM...

And I did I'm looking for a turn around to avoid switching kernels, there are many developers in here and maybe one had a solution.
Besides that, I'm not blaming you nor your custom ROM, so I really don't understand your all caps attitude.
Thanks for your work on Cog 2.2 btw coming from an X10, this a beautiful, brand new world
As an extra note, for some reason the phone started behaving more and more like it used to the more I keep using it. After a few restarts and some regular using, the painful slowdowns are almost gone.
Thanks a lot for your advice cachookaman, I'll try it when i have some free time... I struggled for a while to have the drivers working on my Windows 7 64bit laptop =/
I just rooted my g1,and I have the goal of running Froyo (cyanogen 6) on it...
There are plenty of tutorials online about how to do it, but they all talk about other programs and apps, or random radio versions you have to have...I'm just confused I guess
I'm wondering...
What files do I update or what sort of process do I go through to eventually end up on froyo
my phones freshly rooted using dreaimg.nbh method, running stock g1 android 1.0, baseband 2.22
any help would be great
Welcome to the rooted G1 community! First off, I would recommend downloading the ROM manager from the Android market. I find it much easier to flash stuff using it. But you'll need to partition your SD card, which the ROM manager has a convienient button for. As for getting to Android 2.2, try Cyanogen 6.0.1. But you'll need to get the newest radio and all that schnaz too
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
okay, so I go to upgrade my radio from 2.22.19 to 2.22.27
I download the .zip file, which contains .img files for radio upgrade and "hboot" 1.33.0013d (whatever that is?)
I have to rename the .zip "update.zip" because I put the phone into recovery and hit "alt+s" to "apply sdcard:update.zip" which is as far as i know, the only way to do it (if theres an easier way, PLEASE let me in on it )
anyways, it does its thing,
"installing from sdcard...
finding update package...
opening update package...
verifying update package...
E :No signature (2 files)
E :Verification failed
Installation aborted.
And I also searched the Market for ROM manager, there was nothing...which im assuming is because im still on android 1.0
any help??

Ok, here are some details....
Very first thread in Q&A is for setting adb and fastboot...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
SDK will on your computer and you need to connect the phone with USB....but you need fastboot compatible SPL to use fastboot...
On the short note it is as easy as downloading SDK and installing USB driver...for fastboot you need one extra file to be downloaded....links are in the thread....
Flashing radio and SPL can brick the phone so it is advisable to do it through fastboot...
Also you may want to update your recovery to some of the advanced ones, see my signature for that....
thanks a ton G1sanju, the guide helped a ton, but now im stuck again
I get to the point where the guide says to go into recovery and install the update.zip for cyanogenmod 3.6...
The problem there is that the link is broken and i cant find 3.6 anywhere, so i grabbed a .zip of 5.0.8 and followed the guide...
when i hit alt+s to install it, it gets about half loaded then abourts saying E:cant find update script...
I did some digging on google but all i got was some people who didnt sign their zip...
correct me if i'm wrong (please) but I assumed I didnt have to go through signing because I literally just downloaded the .zip, renamed to update, then threw it on the sd card, but if thats the case then what now?
Try some other rom like sparkmod, super e or super f
Keep on try new roms ton of them r avalible on xda.
And I don't think old roms like cyon 3 will work on new radio and spl so try cyon 5 or 6
And Good luck
