Looking to Track my phone. - G1 Apps and Games

My wife's purse was stolen in Wal-Mart last Sunday. My first thought was "Why didn't I install a tracking program?!?!" Well the purse was found under a cloths rack and the idiot left the phone and her wallet in it. He stole her change purse for work that wad about $50 in it.
I have Gmaps/Latitude running but I used to have an app on my phone that allowed her to txt me with a special command that would cause my phone to get a gps fix and txt her back with a gmaps link. Can't remember the app name though. More importantly, I know there are several apps like this out there.
Which one is best? I want to be able to beat someone's @$$ if one of my G1's is stolen.

Use - Mobile Defense
its free on the market and its amazing!! try it !!!
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.neevo.mobiledefense

Mobile defense and SMS COmmander are both pretty decent. Mobile Defense is free right now though and offers real time tracking with speed etc. It is the one that I use and now it doesnt show up in the app drawer which is pretty cool.

I also like Pintail.

Got Mobile Defense. Works great, Thank you guys for the help. I will be sure to attach a copy of the assault and battery charges if anyone steals my phone. Now I can safely say "I wish a M-Fer would..."

SMS Commander and GPS Tracker are the best out. U can lock your phone with SMS Commander so the thieves can't look at your personal info plus you can receive a gps fix on the phone by sending it a text message.
With GPS Tracker you can send it a text to start GPS tracking and you can set it to update to as little as 5 second intervals so you can watch on a computer screen where your phone is every 5 seconds. Best of all..its FREEEEEE! (Not sure if SMS Commander is still free tho-I think the dev started charging for that app)
I hadn't come across Mobile Defense before reading this thread but I d/l'd it and testing it now..It seems like a really good app so far. Thanks xda'ers for putting me onto this app.

Mobile Defense is only available to people in the US (or with US Market).
GPS Tracker is now seriously useless for tracing stolen phones as it sends a notification every time it sends data to the server making it nice and obvious to thieves.
Any others available ?

mobile defense!
i wish a mofo-er would

ive been using mobile defense before it got popular.
but the text thing.... i also use sms checker. it will send you emails and text messages to a number of ur choice with the coordinates if the simcard was removed and replaced with another. the app where u text the safeword is phone finder.

If we are not in USA, is there any other programs that is like Mobile Defense?
I always have 2 concerns with this type of software
1) If the phone never goes on wireless or does not have a data plan, then mobile defense is useless
2) the sim checker software is good, and it does give you the sim card line no. which was changed thus you can call the person to get back your phone

Am I an idiot, or is there not an option on MobileDefense to remotely turn on GPS? Kinda hard to locate it within 13000 ft. Im all for mass ass kickins, but not EVERYONE deserves one

Activated mine with Mobile Defense, but when trying to connect from the web site it fails. I got two SMS messages and the MobileDefense service is running. Could it be because I am using cyan's rom with enhanced mms?

You have to keep "Enable GPS Satellites" turned on in the settings.

AIM from the tilt

Sorry if wrong area, can someone point me to where I can get the AIM program for my tilt? I did a clean install and didn't want the bloatware, and of course that meant the AIM wasn't installed. I would like that one part back on the tilt.
IM+ is supposedly the best utility. However you have to pay for a license so I don't really know I don't think it's worth it.
I hate IM+. Slick is way better, plus it's free.

Well that sucks....get your $$ back!!
Anyone know what it could be? Have you tried Slick?
Tried Slick some time ago. Felt the same way like starstreak about the AIM release for WM6.
it's built in a cheap way and u can't even enter messages with the jog wheel.
I tried IM+ as well but since that cost money I downloaded slick after the trial ended.
slick is quite ok..easy to handle and it has everything a good chat program should have.
The only thing that I didn't like that much was the design...but who cares if it works better than the original AIM
ATT Tilt IM CAB
I think this is what ya want...
The problem with OZ is that it uses SMS instead of data. So it's only good if you have an unlimited SMS plan.
Thanks, I'll try it once I get home.
Yes, that is true, but if it allows me to connect on the first try, then that is fine. I'm already paying $4.99 for 700text and I don't get that many sms messages so this should be fine as a backup.
UPDATE: Oh slap me! I switch to tmobile. lol. The AIM program works only on the ATT network. Does anybody have something that will work on the TILT with the T-Mobile network?

AIM sign-on, sign-off and refresh buddy list use SMS messages too. Use it as your own risk.
I am using the older version of Agile and I like it (the latest version is not a freeware anymore).
yuck i'd only do a data-only AIM and just find a wi-fi hotspot.
missing the point. the IM+ seems to fail alot for the AIM. I need something that I can connect quickly and disconnect when done.
I use Agile. No issues whatsoever.
You can also get palringo which is a freeware. Works well. This is what I used before getting Agile.

this slick is sick sick sick ! just crashes sometimes not sure why.. just quits with no error
but its quick and got way more settings then other free ones.. could use bit more but I'm not complaining
if anyone figures out crashing part.. hit me up..
thanks
I <3 Agile Messenger been using since beta, it lets you use the pointless ptt button (pointless for me anyway) and send voice links thru whatever messenger your using. It also doesn't disconnect you when your in a phone call which most others seem to do.
http://agilemessenger.com
thanks for all the other suggestions. Since I paid for the IM+ I really didn't want to give money to another unless I HAD to. Yes, I did try the IM+ before buying, and it did work when I used it. Just there are times when it won't AIM connect for like 5mins for no reason. At least with the sms AIM, I know I can send out in case the IM+ don't work.

anyone use the oz messenger cab?

anyone use this at all, from the time that i upgraded my rom, even when i first got my phone w/ the oem tilt rom, it has not worked. I changed the settings on my phone because initially the internet wasn't working, but not it works fine, i'm using palingro...but i at least want to try the oz because there are some things that bother me about it.
and by the way, i'm connecting using the att network, not wifi...as that is the first thing it says when its having trouble connecting. but honestly, no matter what i change in my phone, i'm still getting the "communication error. please try again or check your settings. IM is not supported over wi-fi connections" error.
any help/ideas?
gotten quite a few views, any input guys?
heya sim,
I use the OZ cab, both stock installed on the phone and installed with custom rom. I have experienced the situation you detail. It seems to happen when I close it down a way it didn't like or do something internet-wise with another program.
Fixing it usually only requires a quick turn off then turn on. It does get annoying sometimes when it happens.
Also I would like to add it doesn't seem very responsive as far as receiving messages goes either. Like sometimes I will get a message on my computer at roughly 12 in the afternoon and will not see it on the phone until after dinner. I have even had a couple experiences where I didn't receive messages until after the program had been restarted.
I will be trying another messaging program soon that doesn't use up messaging on my phone, this is part of what I believe makes it slow is the fact it uses messaging instead of internet.
any recommendations? / questions?
oh great...you mean to tell me that the oz messenger is sms based and not internet based? jeeze...i REALLY dont wanna pay for agile
yes this is what they told me at AT&T, There are a few out there that use internet via data connection (3g, hsdpa, etc.) agile being one of them...isnt it free tho? The same goes for Fring, and i believe IM+ you have to pay for but uses data connection aswell.
Yea, i use the OZ one, but only as a way of checking my current buddy lists in AIM and Yahoo. Its very unreliable for actually carrying a conversation. Also, its very clunky to use if you log into 2 or 3 messengers at once. One of the features about this phone that really made me want it (instant messaging on the go) has been pretty lackluster to me. I have yet to try any different messenger suites yet.
Ill let you both know for sure how the others work in comparison as I intend to try a couple other non sms bases ones
OZ messenger is LAME.. go to Palringo.com from your phone. Download it. Way better and its free push to talk built in.
you guys wont be disappointed with Palringo. You can have your AOL, Google Talk/Jabber, MSM messenger, yahoo. It signs in really quick about 2 seconds, gets all your friends, no drops in connection, Beautiful software and best of all its free.

mine ALWAYS drops my aim connection. i have no idea why. It keeps my google chat online constantly though, but not aim. anybody know of a sms based messenger for aim by any chance?
ok, i guess the problem w/ my messenger was the data package that i had with AT&T, now that i upgraded, i can sign on. only problem is, when i'm online...i'm not really online. it shows that all my buddys are off, when i check on another computer (different SN) if i'm on, its says i'm not. anyone know what the hell this is about? it seems like one problem after another w/ this....
plus i'm using the "OZ_Instant_Messanger_at_t_AKU_0.4.4" cab. thanx in advance
Agile
I have dumped Oz because it is slow to connect at times. At times it connects but it does not tell you so, that is you show up on a buddies computer but your phone still shows that it has not connected. Also, in this case if you quit the program, (stop it from memory) you are still logged on. Added to this is that you get charged for text messages!!
So, I have gone to Agile, which is data only. It connects fine too. It is pricey but it does the job. I am using it on a Treo 750. My service is At&T. It also does PTT etc.
AIM
The AIM client also uses data only and not SMS. So if you do not need the other message servers like Yahoo or MSN or Google etc. then AIM might be a good option. You can find it on this forum.
I had been using the OZ client on a trip earlier this month for the first time - did not care for the SMS integration of it at all. Every time a reply would come in you'd get a system SMS message. I've just installed the Palringo client listed above and it seems to work very well. Thanks for the heads up.
I use slick it's easy and free
yea wish i had read this thread prior to sending those 100 sms messeages at .15 cents each. Wait employee discount! oh **** not for sms. hahaha
gdit at&t!!
gonna check out one of these two you guys mentioned, that oz one does suck
and i have unimited data only.
I really wish I read this before paying for IM+. I like their service but have had a lot of problems lately when I flash roms constantly. Crap like always having to put in my resistration and then saying that my registration number is being used. I would understand if I stole the software but I paid good money for it.
I tried aglie and really like the GUI, but I'm not in the mood to spend that much money for another program.
I just downloaded palringo and from first impression really like it. The only thing I don't like is that it won't keep my always connected. Battery isn't an issue and neither is data.
I hear that. Im waiting and watching for something better.
BTW super rocks!
How about Fring?

same here.. been using it since i first bought my tilt and no complaints to day

Just got the tilt today and got some questions.

1. I bought from att and flashed it with the htc rom and now when I press the "@" it turns into "!" and some other buttons too but I can't remember which. how do i fix this?
2. Do I need a data connection in order to use the email or can I just use wifi?
I tried using wifi but it doesn't work. It says "the message could not be sent. check that you have network coverage."
3. what is the best gps to use with the tilt? I couldn't get tomtom to work because it couldn't detect my internal gps.
4. any awesome programs I should know about?
I don't know much about it but I would read a thread like this if your keyboard is messed up http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334911
thats perfect thanks man! but how do i install?
For TomTom, try this thread.
For email, are you using your own WiFi, or a hotspot somewhere? I find that when I am at home and using WiFi, I need to set my SMTP server to my ISP's, but if I am away from home and using GPRS I have to set the SMTP server to that of my mobile provider. I would guess it's the same for using different Wifi networks, since most won't allow you to send email via SMTP server A whilst connected to a network using SMTP server B. This is called relaying, and is to prevent spam mail being sent. Course I could be totally wrong, and your problem is something else!
Can you surf the net via WiFi? If so, try setting the device up for hotmail (just get a hotmail account if you haven't got one) and try sending mail from Hotmail. If you can do this, its more likely either a SMTP server problem, or go through the email settings menu, click on advanced server settings and see what the network connection is. It should be "The Internet".
For a must have program....since you seem to be using the phone for internet connections, get Opera Mobile. It's free and a substantially better browser that the stock Pocket IE. Other than that, browse the forums, you will find so much! Have a look for my post in this thread. Lots of idea's for programs!

1.) Get the keyboard fix, its in the CAB list, its under "Tilt keyboard fix".
2.) Try seeing what it is connecting to and if your wifi modem is letting it connect to it
3.) Probably Tom Tom the one made for the tilt. Its on here somewhere.
4.) CAB List has some . PM me and I will tell you some more in detail.

Removed app? google maps + turn by turn

Hi,
A month or two ago I downloaded a promising app off the market (sorry, can't remember the name). It used google maps and provided turn by turn directions with voice cues. After wiping I can't find the app - does anyone remember what it was called? It seemed a little slow / too big for the Dream, but was much better than the other free mapping apps on the market now. I've googled and searched the forums a few times w/o coming up with anything. Thanks.
PS if this post is out of line since the app likely violated Google Map's API licensing, sorry, it was free and I don't see the harm.

also interested in this app
I think the app you are talking about is 1-click-direction
Hmm... it looks close, but I don't think that's it. I could have sworn it had turn by turn directions, and the interface here doesn't look familiar. It's been a few of months so I suppose I could be forgetting, but really I thought I'd tested the turn by turn. No one else remembers seeing this? This probably would have been in end of May, or maybe early June.
It might be gNaviHelper, but I can't be sure - apparently I've used it before and my free trial is up. Is it worth $9?
I don't think there is any turn by turn navigation on the market yet. ANDNav2 would be the only app that has turn by turn but thats not fully functional yet in the US. There is telenav that has turn by turn, but its not available on the market you have to go to there website to download it. I use to have it and its pretty nice but after a couple months I thought it was a waste cause my JVC unit has built in navigation. If I'm wrong on anything feel free to blast me.

I'm with you on that one. Additionally it's only a 1 time +/- $35.00 charge. No monthly like Telenav.
Yeah co-pilot is the way to go.
I wonder if AndNav or something similar could be ported from navit, navit builds a data file from OSM data, but it halves the size of the OSM file and does turn by turn etc.
from what i can tell, co-pilot wants to take all of the california maps, even all the maps if i wanted them (1+gb) and put them on my phone?? it says not enough memeory but how do i get tit to save all that info on the sdcard??? did it tell me not enough space cuz the sdcard didnt have 1+gb?? cuz i just i didnt have room on my sdcard either. LOL! *slaps self with large trout* hahahhaa
I have been using nav4all, it seems to be a decent app. I can say that it is actively developed. I believe the developer is working on an android interface. Here is the link to the apk.

CoPilot needs about 2GB free initially to unpack the map data. After it is unpacked, it only takes up about 1.1GB of space.
depends on the map.....
Europe takes 1.9GB
the app is well worth it!

what i have installed for turn by turn is nav4all on the market its FREE too. you also have an option for a nice female voice. tho the UI is actually pretty ugly and u may have to get used to it. but it well worth it for being free.
If you live in the city, it really doesn't matter which option you pick, as long as you like it.
Unfortunately, if you're in (or going to be in) an area with very little GSM coverage, co-pilot would *seem* like the best option since it doesn't need a cell signal to operate.
The problem I've had is that co-pilot loves to forget that it has been registered. Unfortunately, it won't tell you this until you're trying to shave an hour off your road trip by hopping off the interstate and going through the woods...and don't have a phone signal.
Andnav2 works pretty well in the US. It is much better than the other options, and does not require a data connection for navigation.
Nav4all
it called nav4all

[Q] CoPilot Live 8 ?

Anyone else use this navigation software ?
I used it on my Hero without any major problems. It took them an age to get a Froyo version sorted out. Put it on my Nexus One. Its now an excellent example of how to write totally non functional code! I am unable to download maps via the built in map downloader. A definite step backwards by ALK Technologies.
As for any kind of support, that's as useless as their software!
So, unless someone here call prove to me otherwise, stay well clear of this software. Take heed of the comments on the Market about it too.
Hmm works fine for me. You just need to turn on wifi before downloading maps through the app.
What exactly is the problem when you try?
My wifi is on permanently if i am at home or at the office. The maps never download. There is no indication they are downloading either, no progress bar at all. What phone are you running it on ? A Nexus One ?
Yeah a nexus one...
Once you pass all the setup screens and get into co-pilot (with no map), go menu get maps, or updates. Its one of those options. Then you'll see the progress bar.
For some reason or another the download is probably being interupted. Maybe you let your phone sleep and wifi turns off?
Ok will try it yet again. Thanks for the help.
CoPilot 8 .. utterly useless!!
Ok so today I tried to reinstall CoPilot 8 on my Nexus One.
This software is awful! Firstly I was unable to install the voice I wanted, just said File Error. Sorted that out by choosing a different voice. Then tried to download UK maps. Failed every time. Made sure Wifi did not go to sleep just to make sure.
Figured it was time to send emails of complaint to Head Office in the USA. Interestingly enough every single published contact email address for that company bounces... odd eh ? Have given up on CoPilot and doubt I will ever get my money back.
To every one else, think long and hard before you waste your money.
When you bought it through market you should have got a license/activation email from '[email protected]'
Send them an email and it'll automatically create a trouble ticket which they'll respond to.
I have lost count of the number of times I have "raised a ticket" with ALK. Interestingly the moment they reply (in any way, useful or not) they close the ticket. Pointless if the problem has not been resolved. They are very difficult to get in touch with (in a sensible way), perhaps this is deliberate? Given the very poor comments on the Market about this application I can understand their desire not to communicate with the many angry people who purchased this application and are unable to use it. I guess the next step is to send them a letter and if they still choose to do nothing I will pursue my refund through the UK small claims court system. Perhaps that will make them respond ? Its a shame because on my Hero the software worked reasonably well :-(
I've given up on that cr*p software
Works fine for me. My installation and setup process went very smooth.
Its great when it works properly. I had an issue with license keys after I had a N1 replaced and they sorted it out pretty quickly. If you reply to the email the ticket is re-opened.
Having said that i've seen many complaints on the net about them. If you bought it on a credit card just threaten to charge it back. That'll kick them into gear.
The pattern i've found is that anything 'easy' to fix they handle well, anything obscure or that might take some diagnosis or thought and they keep fobbing you off hoping you'll give up.
Luckily google market has a 24 hour refund period.. if you have problems in setup just hit the refund button. A bit late for you now tho i guess.

I am sorry you are having problems but it is not bad software. I was one of the REALLY early users and had to jump through substantial hoops to get maps installed. Once everything was running correctly though it has proven reliable and I have not had a problem since not related to me upgrading to an unsupported ROM.
Navigation is nice if you are in a well covered area for data but copilot has advantages in spottier areas. I use both depending on my mood and neither is crap.
Are there 2010 maps out for Copilot yet? I've run the latest auto update but I'm still getting 2009 ones .
It told me to turn into a wall yesterday
Could not disagree with you more, I have had a few problems with downloads and activations (I am a frequent rom swapper), and each time theyre customer support was prompt and courteous. Performing account resets or offering advice about side loading maps downloaded using the copilot desktop software (which downloads MUCH faster FYI).
But the real kicker is go off cell grid some time (like camping which i do alot). Google maps will fail on you as it requires constant connection to reload a map if you leave the map screen at any time, Copilot stores maps on the SD card allowing me to find that odd rural route to the highway and re-enable Google maps with all my layers. Its a real life saver off the grid.
I never had any issues with moving to Co-Pilot on the Nexus One (had it installed previously on my Hero). The only gripe I have with the software is that it doesn't disable the onboard speaker when routing audio to bluetooth end up with a echo, raised a ticket.. who knows if it will be fixed.
I've been using a modified 800x600 version of MotoNav that actually works very very well. I think it was yanked out of *gasp* a motorola.
The reg uses one of those 876x600 or something resolutions which will run but will cut off the bottom.
