HOW TO: Downgrade ANY G1 (GLOBAL ANY) (CRC1) - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HOW TO: Downgrade ANY G1 (GLOBAL) (CRC1)
I’ve made this guide so No more new questions are being raised for CRC1.
I know I’m Hypocrite because I did it as well.
I’ve gathered all various posts into this guide so it’s in one place. This worked perfect for me I’m running JACxHERO 1.2 at the moment.
I don’t take any Credit nor am I responsible for bricking your G1.First you format your SD like so:
Format F: /FS:FAT32 /A:4096
The next step is to get your CID from your SD card.
Go to the market with G1 and download Terminal Emulater.
Open the app and type: cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
Here you receive a number like " 0353445355303147800208D254008A6E"
Convert the number like this:
03 53 44 53 55 30 31 47 80 02 08 D2 54 00 8A 6E
6E 8A 00 54 D2 08 02 80 47 31 30 55 53 44 53 03 <-- reverse of the top code
Final: 008A0054D20802804731305553445303 <-- the fisrt 2 (6E) we replace by 00
Now your ready to make the goldcard via the link below.
This number you fill out HERE and wait for the almost instant email.
- download HxD Hex Editor and install
- open program and go to "extra" and then "open disk"
- choose physical disk and then the removable disk. that is the same as your memory card. I've you don`t know with one it is. just remove the card and restart the program and you will see witch one is disappeared.
- uncheck open as readonly !!!!!!!
- go to "extra" again and the open disk image.
- open the goldcard.img witch you have created from Viper BJK website.
- press ok (512 is fine) en then "select all" and "copy"
- go to the removable disk tab and select offset 00000000 till offset 00000170 go to "edit" and then past write.
- save it
- now copy dreaming.nbh to the root off your memorycard.(RC7) <-- RC7 works best for DREA110
- turn of your phone and restart by holding the camera and the power button.
Download the Hard SPL:
SPL
Download the Recovery Image:
RECOVERY
1. All files must be on the root of your SD card.
2. Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
3. After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
4. Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
5. If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
6. Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
o mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
o cd sdcard
o flash_image recovery recovery.img
o cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
What To Do Now That You Have RootNow that you have root, you will want to apply "Hard SPL" to your phone. HardSPL is what will allow you to apply flash images from other regions (like UK on US phones, and vice versa), create full backups of your phone, install the latest build from the Android source, and usually resurrect your phone if it is "bricked". You have already downloaded the file to your SD card, so now you can apply it.
1. Power off your phone.
2. Start up in recovery mode by holding home and pressing power.
3. You will now enter recovery mode. You should see an exclamation.
4. If you do not see a menu on screen, press Alt-L to show the menu.
5. Press Alt-S to apply the update from the SD card.
6. After the update is complete, hold Home and press Back to restart.
And now, the last step! You are still running an old version of Android, but you want to upgrade to the latest and greatest update! You can do this, and not lose root by downloading modified versions of the updates.
1. Download the image.
2. Rename it to update.zip.
3. Copy it to your phone's SD card.
4. Turn your phone off.
5. Start up in recovery mode by holding Home and pressing Power.
6. Press alt-W to wipe your device. (You need to do this, or the device may hang at the flashing Android screen)
7. Press alt-S to apply the update.
Now that you have done this you can Flash ROMS that don't use ext2,3,4.
For the Hero ROMS
"WARNING YOU MUST HAVE CORRECT SPL AND RADIO"Requirements:
: some knowledge Root, Creating Partitions, Flashing, correct radio and spl etc...
: Root see how Look up in the Post
: SPL & Radio get it (HERE)
: 3 partitions fat32, ext3 & Linux-swap see how (HERE)
: Cyanogen spiffy Recovery 1.4 Image, get it (HERE)
: G1

Install Radio FIRST
Download the Radio Update
Rename it to update.zip
Remove your SD Card from your phone and place it in your SD Card Reader
Put the update.zip at the root of your SDcard (root = not in any folder)
Insert your sdcard back into the phone
Turn off your phone (Hold power and press Power Off)
Hold the Home button and then press the power button (Keep holding power)
You will now enter recovery
Open up your keyboard and press Alt-S
Let it finish the update
When done reboot by pressing Home and Back
You should be able to access your Home screen (If its stuck on the Google G1 screen dont panic, just remove your battery for now)
Installing the new SPL
Note: To update you must have a PVT board. To Check go into fastboot (Power and Camera and check) Thanks persiansown
Take your SD Card out again and plug it into the pc
Remove the update.zip that you put in there
Download your current Rom or any other ROM that you want. I suggest CyanogenMod 3.6
Download the SPL Update
Rename the SPL Update to update.zip
Remove your SD Card from your phone and place it in your SD Card Reader
Put the update.zip at the root of your SDcard (root = not in any folder)
Insert your sdcard back into the phone
Turn off your phone (Hold power and press Power Off) or put your battery back in and turn it on
Hold the Home button and then press the power button (Keep holding power)
You will now enter recovery
Open up your keyboard and press Alt-S
Let it finish the update
Now it will reboot on its own back to recovery
Reboot again by pressing Home + Back
Your phone will be stuck on the T-Mobile G1 Screen (Again DONT FREAK)
Remove the battery from your phone
Remove your SD Card and plug it back into your computer
Take the ROM that you downloaded and rename it update.zip
Remove the update.zip that was on your SD Card and put this new one it
Put the battery back into your phone
Enter recovery (Home + Power)
Press Alt+s to update
Let it finish
Press Home + Back to reboot
Thats it! You now have your new SPL and Radio
If your in a boot loop you need to re-format ext3, but how?
"Thru Phone terminal"
: Boot into recovery home+power
: Go to console ALT+X
In Phone Console:"type"
(press enter)
#
# mount -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /system/sd
# rm -rf /system/sd/*
# reboot recovery
Download your desired ROM rename as update.zip and your off.

Wow rooting CRC1 seems complicated. W/e happened to just formatting your SD card to FAT32 then loading the DREAIMG.nbh in hboot?

It seems alot cause I've putten it all in one post including going to HERO
And the CRC1 doesn't root as easy as the RC7,8,30,33,29 versions

these root instructions are for non-us/uk phones?
Im pretty sure that the G1 can be rooted from CRC1 w/ the DREAIMG.nbh, there was a thread about it in the dev section
Hes using the goldcard method, which you must use for certain htc dream's

These instrauctions are indeed for non US/UK phones.
This method uses the goldcard method via an Hex Editor. I understood you can also use adb to push goldcard, and you can also do it if you have WM device.
I wanted ppl to know this ay cause it's easy and worked in 1 time for me without problems

You might want to edit your title as to now confuse the US G1 user's into thinking that they should use this method versus the other, much easier methods already posted and stickied.

^^^Yep....

i really want to make my G1 CRC1 rooted...
but sorry, i can't understand nothing about this mentioned above!!!
can some1 make video tutorial for this and post it on youtube?
thx

Which G1 do you have? US and UK G1's can be rooted by the normal method.

i have
Unlocked T-Mobile Germany,

I have tried naming the file DREAIMG.nbh , DreaIMG.nbh, DREAIMG.NBH, DreaIMG.NBH. It always says "not allow". I have tried downloading the file from two different sources. Still no joy. Could there be something wrong with my G1? Does anyone have a download location of a confirmed working image file?
and last thing: i was wondering if i downgrade my g1 will it simlock it and i have to buy a new unlock code?

Unable to root German G1 running Donut
Hi guys,
I am also running into trouble while trying to root my German G1 running Donut, after formatting my SD Card using FAT 32 (many different formatting actions tried - from phone, from windows explorer menu, from command line prompt).
Then I obtained a goldcard.img using the reversed cid (replaced first two characters from reversed version with 00) and wrote the image to my sdcard (connected through a card reader) using HxD.
The card was then inserted into the phone, the latter being then powered-on while pressing the camera button. At this point I do get the "rainbow" screen, it then shows a grey screen which first says "loading...", then "checking..." and then "0028002 not allow".
My sdcard is a 2 GB SanDisk, might there be a problem with this brand not being supported?
Is there anybody out there experiencing this issue with the G1 Donut using the goldcard method? I thought that the goldcard was supposed to fix these issues.
Or even better, *is* there anybody out there who has managed to root a German (or Continental European) G1 running stock Donut?

Any Ideas??? i am 100% sure that the format of my SD is FAT32 but not sure about the file i download. i tried many.

Hi,
I wanted to root my Dutch G1 and I followed all thes steps. When
I put DREAIMG.NBH on my SD Card and restart my phone with camera+power buttons I get this;
"Loading", then "Not allow", and then it goes to the Rainbow-screen
DREA110 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
I saw a lot of people having this problem, does someone know an solution for it?
My phone;
T-mobile G1
Firmware version 1.6

Kernel Version 2.6.29-00479-g3c7df37

Bytheway, this is what I got using an 4GB SanDisk Micro SD. I saw somewhere else that I had to use an 2GB SD, but with that one I couldn't even put DREAIMG.NBH on it, because I ad to format it again

I have the same problem as CoolSebas.
Also a Dutch T-Mobile phone.
I bought it new and unused last week, the store had one left for sale.
With the 2 Gb SD card that was inserted in the phone I have the same problem as CoolSebas: right after pasting the part from the Goldcard.img Windows prompts me to format the card, so I couldnt put dreaimg.nbh on the card.
Besides the already slotted 2 Gb card there was also an 8 Gb extra SD card, and with that card I also get the "not allow" message after booting.
Exactly the same kernel, android and build version as his G1.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I solved the "not allow" issue.
It comes down to: rename DREAIMG.NBH to DREAIMG.nbh
Then it worked.... sigh.. that cost me 6 hours of trying and rebooting.
Hope it's to some use for you guys.
For the Dutch guys here, I did exactly what it says here: http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_message/33821624#33821624

Heel erg bedankt allemaal!
Als ik de instructies van dit topic volg, en ik WIPE m'n telefoon, dan start hij opnieuw op, net zoals bij een gewone recovery (opnieuw opstarten, Google-account invoeren, etc.). Daarna zet ik de telefoon uit, en start hem op in recovery-mode. Ik druk op Alt+S en TOT dan lijkt alles goed te gaan, ik krijg namelijk dit;
Installing from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
E:Can't find update script
Installation aborted.
Press Home+Back to reboot
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Update]
OMG!!

The RGB screen is normal for that bootloader. Is the file named DREAIMG.nbh on the root of your sdcard? If it is, and all goes well, it should flash the RGB screen, then another gray screen will come up with instructions with how to flash the DREAIMG.nbh to your phone. I think the instructions say something like press Volume Up to flash the img, and some other stuff... if the DREAIMG.nbh doesn't work, try renaming it to DREAMIMG.nbh and seeing if the bootloader recognizes it then.
it was named as u said, but i get a quick grey screen then it goes to the RGB. i tried renaming it as stated, and got the same result.
Not quite certain why the bootloader isn't seeing the nbh file. I'll go look around, but maybe someone will post the answer here before me.
Btw, do you have the US phone or the UK version? The UK version requires RC7 not RC29, that might be why, but ehhh, sounds unlikely if you've been following the instructions...
EDIT: KK! Found a likely solution. After formatting it (your sdcard) from your phone, you still need to format it one more time in Windows. Make sure you format it to FAT32, not FAT16, not FAT, but FAT32.
Once that is done, I would re-download the file (some people said that re-naming the file made it not visible in bootloader and re-downloading it solved it). Make sure it is named DREAIMG.NBH (ALL CAPS, but also make sure you can see file extensions in Windows so that you don't rename it to DREAMIMG.nbh.nbh). Do that and let me know how that goes.
format ur sd card too fat32 thats probably y

stuckked at recovery screen

i dont have a Backup
should i install HardSPL?... (HSPL10.95.3000) ?
what is solution?
is this phone rooted? how can i understand it?
thanks
did you even read the OP to almost every single hero rom? you have to have the 1.33.2005 spl to flash most any hero rom, there is one (could be more, haven't checked though) that will fit on the hard spl.
to get a rom back on your phone and the phone to a working state go into the recovery console from the recovery screen and type
Code:
ums_enable
to mount your sdcard to your computer and type
Code:
ums_disable
to unmount it after you put a rom on there that does not require the 1.33.2005 spl. such as cyanogen's or enomther's roms.
thanks a lot, it was not written at Fatal1ty's page, so i thought it's simple
i know tried
#ums_enable
/dev/block/mmcblk/ #
and connected to Pc, installed drivers ((http://dl.google.com/android/android_usb_windows.zip)
it still doesnt show the Mass Storage disk in My computer (windows)
there is a disk F: but when i click it it says put a disk in driver etc..
it seems i need a microsd card reader?... otherwise i dont see sdcard
ok i restarted it and now i can see as Mass Storage.. thanks
i have now HSPL10.95.3000 and RADIO-2.22.19
i think it mean i can flash any rom now
If you haven't rooted your phone, cause you said how do I know if it's rooted, you need to root it in order to flash a custom rom.

[SOLVED]Main Version Older, G1, Continental European, no root, really stuck

Long Story Short (you can read below to see the progress):
PROBLEM SOLVED, you can use the 1 click method shown here http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-root-a-t-mobile-g1-and-mytouch-3g-android-phone/ but you need to use the LATEST FLASHREC you can find here http://zenthought.org/content/project/flashrec, and from the flashing on everything is nice and dandy! my phone still has the ORANGE logo but I will have to wait a few minutes for it to boot. I am so excited!
HOPE IT HELPS PEOPLE!
I am trying to root my Continental European G1 with this guide
(being continental european I can ONLY use the GOLDCARD tutorial? )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547557.
1. I enter the command into terminal emulator and it outputted this:
2842454c455841521000001ed8009368 that looks like this
28 42 45 4c 45 58 41 52 10 00 00 1e d8 00 93 68 which transforms into this
009300d81e000010524158454c454228
2. I send an email to that address, the goldcard.img came attached.
3. I open HxD Hex Ed, open the goldcard image(located on SDCARD removable disk), copy the hexadecimal code, then I open the REMOVABLE DISK with readonly unchecked, (up that list there is also my partitions names, in this case SDCARD, but I modified the removable disk, as it is stated in the guide). I paste the code copied earlier from 000000 to 000170, I hit SAVE, everything savy so far.
Pictures Uploaded below
4. Read below, my phone is DREA20000, I download RC7 DREAIMG.nbh, update.zip and recovery.img and copy them all in the ROOT of my SD card.
- now copy dreaming.nbh to the root off your memorycard.(RC7) <-- RC7 works best for DREA110
Click to collapse
,from the global root guide
Restart Phone with Camera Button (step 2) pushed, I enter the update console, I push action to start the update and I still get

----------------------------------------FROM HERE I STARTED, ABOVE IS THE UPDATE PROGRESS
Hello, since this morning I am trying to flash my phone cyanogenMOD firmware.
My G1 has the following specs:
DREAM PVT 32B SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.38.0000 (DREA20000)
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.16.19
28 February 2009
Model Number: HTC_Dream
Firmware: 1.1
Baseband version: 62.41S.20.13U_2.22.16.19
Kernel Version: 2.6.25-deb9915c
[email protected] #11
Build number: 1.56.73.2 PLAT-1.0_gms-135348 CL#11526 release keys
Does anyone has an idea, a tip, anything to flash my phone.
THANKS, Arthur.
did you try rooting with the goldcard method?
search for it
Thanks,
I can't find an older version of the QMat, the latest version is free, but to use the HTC Goldcard you need to pay 20Euros
EDIT
i found an older version of QMat, but it won't generate the img for my SD card(picture attached).
It's a LEXAR 8GB SD with the CID:
00510009531f4003424d3832314e4918
Could someone please generate a image file for me, or do I have to buy another model of SD card?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547557
i dont think this method requires QMAT
also, you should stop at where it says "FOR THE HERO ROMS"
because you could potentially brick your phone if you do the steps after that wrong
you should be fine with the hardSPL so stick with that till you feel your ready to upgrade ( i didnt upgrade till a month ago lol and my phones been rooted since may XD)
EDIT: if you can find the 1.5 cupcake update for your provider, you can flash that and try to use the one click method if none of the above works
Thanks a lot, I'm gonna start reading! and hopefully achieving smt ). I've got a big project to work on and the curiosity eats me to root my G1 ). Everything but working onthe project )
EDIT: Apparently the phone won't take RC7, because i quote my smartphone "Main version is older". What can I do?
What are the steps?
Newer DREAIMG.nbh which is root-ed?
Another way to install the recovery image so that I can flash everything from the recovery console?

ADP, no recovery?

Since yesterday I own a g1 developer version, when turning the phone on by teh power button all I see is a red, green, blue & white background with the following text..:
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-1.22.12.29
Sep 2 2008
Serial0
When turning the phone on by the power button & the home button I get a white triangle with a exclamation mark, from there, the ALT+L button gives me the following:
Android system recovery utility
E: can't open /cache/recovery/command
From here you can reboot the phone, apply sdcard:update.zip or wipe data/factory reset.
I've tried different update.zip version, but when de update is going to install the following error appeared (Some update.zip versions give this, some give a line 2 error)
"faillure line 1: assert file_contains(“SYSTEM:build.prop, en nog een hele lap tekst..
Could it be that I use the wrong update.zip? Anyone a suggestion? All I want is the phone working..
a good tutorial how to patch and upgrade your phone can be found on the cyanogen mod page http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ in the wiki section. There is a foolproof description especially for the develloper version, just search for it!
From what I understand ADP1 uses different recovery procedures than retail G1s. Check HTC's ADP1 site for more details and to download a recovery image.
wrong section dude
now that you have a dream, u might want to avoid asking questions in the dev area...u will get burnt to a crisp very quickly
the search button (and google) is your best friend...use them before posting
I've followed this
1 Download the DREAIMG.nbh:
2 Place "DREAIMG.nbh" on the root of your SD card.
3 Turn your phone off.
4 Start up in bootloader mode by holding Camera + Power.
5 Hit power button to start the update.
6 Once the install completes hit action(trackball down) and your phone will reboot.
The phone is installing the update, but after a reboot it gives the same color screen I've had before.
Sounds like your camera button is messed up/stuck. Try blowing some compressed air in there or something like that, see if that helps.
I don't think it has anything to do with the camerabutton.. When I leaving the .nbh file on the sd card, en I turn the phone on, it comes with the color screen.. If the camerabutton is active, he should start the update..
Alright, I´ve made some progres..
Trough this site http://www.htcforums.com/threads/3298-POSSIBLE-SCREEN-OF-DEATH I came hier https://android.clients.google.com/updates/partner/signed-kila-ota-148830.de6a94ca.zip
This zip file is nog up anymore, downloaded it somewhere else & renamed it to update.zip, placed it on a sd card. Booted the phone with the home en power button, -> ALT + L -> ALT + S.. This is the first rom which is going to install..
Installing from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Openen update package...
verifying update package.. takes a minute
installing update...
formatting boot
extracting radio image
formatting system
copying files
After this a manual reboot with back & power button, the phone shows a kind of chip met a arrow, automatic reboot, show a white box with a arrow pointing to a phone, automatic reboot & again the rainbow screen.
Well, tried a lot, searched the internet, but can't get it to wrok..

Problem Installing SPL and Updating Radio

Hi Everyone,
I am sorry to bother you guys, but I am writing since I am having a hard time upgrading my g1 to the hardspl or any spl for that matter after downgrading and then re-rooting. As per the directions I have:
1. First reformatted my sd card to fat32 in Windows.
2. Downloaded RC29 DREAIMG.nbh file and placed in main sdcard.
3. Turned off the phone off and rebooted holding the Camera button and the Power button until the phone is in bootloader mode.
4. Followed the directions and installed DREAIMG.nbh; and then rebooted the phone via Call button, Menu button & Power button all at the same time.
5. Used t-mobile sim card with data to log in.
6. Then pressed “enter” and type “telnetd” and then “enter.”
7. Next downloaded telnetd from Market.
8. Gained access via telent and did the following
Code:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard
flash_image recovery recovery.img
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
The recovery image that I used was the Cyanogen AmonRa recovery from ttp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Dream:_Rooting
9. Step 8 was not fully successful in adding in the recovery image. So I downloaded AndExplorer from Market and installed it. And then I installed Flash Recovery as well, and used Flash Recovery to install the Amon Ra Recovery.
10. After that I rebooted the phone into recovery and did wipe and factory reset.
11. Then I Partitioned the SDCARD to 512mbs for ext2 and fat32 for the remainder. Then Partition SD Card > SD: ext2 to ext3.
12. Then I did USB toggle and loaded up the radio ota-radio-2_22_19_26I, Hard SPL, update-cm-4.2.15.1-signed, and signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.
13. First I flashed the ota-radio-2_22_19_26I and rebooted to apply.
14. Then Hard SPL and rebooted to apply
15. Then did factory reset/wipe.
16. Then applied signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721 followed immediately by update-cm-4.2.15.1-signed.
After doing the above 16 steps, I was able to boot in Cyanogen 4.2 and when I checked the radio, it still shows the original old 1.22.12.29 radio. And when I reboot the phone via “Power” and “Back”, in fastboot it shows the rainbow screen with the info
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
Radio-1.22.12.29
Sep 2 2008
Click to collapse
So it means that the HardSPL is not installing, neither is the radio.
I have tried repeating the above steps with installing the radio then DangerSPL and then Cyanogen 5, but the phone remained stalled on the loading Android screen for 1 hour. So I pulled the battery and followed the above steps to restore the phone back to Cyanogen 4.2.
So can anyone please give me advise on what I can do to get HardSPL and the latest radio to install. Btw this originally an ADP1 that I got installed with the Tmobile stuff. If there was an ADP1 image, I would definitely restore it to that, but I have not come across one yet T.T
Thank you in advance for your help everyone.
So no one has any idea on what i can do to install the hardSPL? I even went here ttp://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page#Dream.2FG1.2FADP1 and rebooted everything. And at this point I am running Android 1.1 with RC30 by jesusfreak with his recovery.img. Yet, I am still unable to install the hardSPL.
When I go through recovery mode and run the hardSPL installation, it the installation bar goes to 50% or so visually and then says everything is complete. And after that it tell me to press "home + back" to continue and it does the reboot and reboots back into recovery as well. So after that I reboot the phone and press "power + back" to enter into fastboot and it still shows the rainbow fastboot.
Sigh. So what is missing or what am i doing wrong. As i said I am still running Android 1.1 RC30 JesusFreak mod and I do not want to go up higher unless I am sure I can install the HardSPL.
Please any help would be much appreciate. Happy Holidays everyone .
I almost said flash the radio via fastboot *facepalm*
Are you sure you're using AmonRa's recovery? If you're using Cyan's you can't flash via 'any update.zip on sdcard' or whatever. It *must* be called update .zip and you must flash using alt-s, *not* using the trackball.
