The short answer is if you are switching between ROMs (like going from hero to CM builds, JF to CM, or some combo) then yes you should wipe. If you are upgrading the same build to a newer version (like going from CM 3.6.8.1 to 4.0.1) then no, you don't have to wipe.
It sounds like you should upgrade your recovery image at the very least to cyanogen's recovery 1.4. Come on, everyone's doing it.

hey guys,
My g1 is stuck at the TMOBILE g1 screen.
i loaded this theme.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=541841
and it worked great but then i saw this theme and liked it better
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=520629
so i loaded it just like i loaded the first one. but it got stuck at the Tmobile g1 screen. so i tried to re load the other theme and its doing the same thing. i tried wiping by booting into Home+power button. but its still doing the same thing. can anyone help me out?? thanks.
What rom are you running? The first is for CM and the second one won't work on the newer CM roms. What you will prolly need to do is reflash the rom you want then make sure the theme you are flashing will work with the rom.

Uhm No, He said it worked fine with the first theme, for a cyan rom. His SPL has zilch to do with this unless it is a Hero rom/theme. But it is not, it is a theme for a older cyan rom. Repartition is the word i think you meant to use, and what is a "htc rom"? Don't get someone confused with bad advice please, we have enough problems in the Dream forums already.
And to help the OP, see what rom the theme you want to use is made for. And if is just the theme or the entire rom, as some themes are. If it is a small size like 10-20mb then it is just the theme in which case you want to get the rom it is made for and flash it (step 1 get it onto your sd and rename it update.zip, go into recovery and wipe, then flash the update.zip, reboot and go through the initial setup step get the theme onto your sd and rename it update.zip DONT WIPE!!! then flash update.zip). If it is the full rom+theme then you only need to go through step 1. Hope this helps with your troubles.
I looked this problem up on google and it brought me to this page. I am running CyanogenMod and tried to use this theme (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=541242). Now I am stuck at the "T-Mobile G1" loading screen. I tried taking out the battery. Doing a "wipe data/factory reset" and restoring the latest backup. Nada. I'm very frustrated. What can I do? (Also big thanks to everyone in this community who help make this phone so great)

What version of CyanogenMod are you running? You should make sure you have the newest which is 4.0.3.1, so what you need to do is wipe, flash cyanmod 4.0.3.1, make sure you download the correct version of that theme here is the link and flash it. Just make sure you DO NOT wipe before flashing the theme. You should be all set after. PM me if you need more help.
How many people are going to have to ask you lol...? We want to help but you gotta tell us what CM version you have.

Flashing is changing the rom. You can find roms in the android development forum. I would suggest you use cyanogen mod 4.0.4 and then goto the themes and wallpapers forum and find one that works with it.
First thing you need to do is download the cyanogen mod 4.0.4 rom from android development forum. Put it on your sd card (if you cant boot up your g1 then goto recovery (home+power) and then goto console, hit enter, then type ums_enable and hit enter then you can plug it into your computer and load the cyanogen 4.0.4, rename it to update then on your phone type ums_disable and hit enter) then unplug your phone and type recovery and hit enter. Now hit wipe and after its done hit apply update, when its done reboot your phone. It will take 5-10 mins to boot up and after you go the the initial setup you can plug it into your computer and put the theme you choose on the sd card, delete the cyanogen mod (update.zip) then rename the theme to update and reboot your phone into recovery, hit apply update and after its done reboot your phone and it will take awhile again. If you do it all right your theme will be applied and you will be all good.
Ha this is going to sound funny but no one has mentioned it yet and I know there are some impatient people out there.
Are you waiting at the G1 screen for at least 15 mins? After a flash it can take upto 15 mins on the G1 screen to boot.

once signed in go to market get Telnet
once its downloaded
be on home screen and do this
hit

Enter
then after that type
telnetd
then hit
Enter
then go to telnet app and from there click connect
then flash recovery.img
(i know your past these steps i post this for refernce an incase you didnt)
now that you are in recovery
make sure you have latest radio.
which can be found
/G1-radio-2_22_23_02.zip
go to apply from sd card
once it flashes its gonna ask to reboot then reboot once reboot you can flash a rom(if requies danger SPL then flash that after radio, then reboot again, then flash ROM
I don't know what happend.. But my phone doesn't have any bootanimation anymore.. I tryed installing a lot of new ones to see if that was the problem..
Using Root Explorer..
But it seems like nothing i do seems to work.. It just showes the LG loading, and then stay for 4 sec until it boots the homescreen..
What happend, and how do i fix that without installing rom again ?
i dont know if this will help.
In the 1st link you will find a random boot animation.zip. CWM and then install it
In the 2nd link you will find all the bootanimations for the o2x (exept honeycomb animation) included in a folder called "bootanimations". Take this folder and put it in /data/local/bootanimations/ (Its a .rar file so, unzip it first before place it)
i think that should fix the problem and in every restart you will get a different bootanimation (10 in total)
PS: This is not my work, all credits goes to the owners of "randombootanimation" script, and ofc to those who make those animations
R.B.A.zip
bootanimations
Ill try and let you know.. Thanks for the fast reply.. =)
Didn''t work.. :S IDK what i made.. Nvm then.. =) I boots fast enough.. But just wierd.. :S
Hi,
I did some stupid things will trying to flash with Odin.. I remembered I pull the cable during "setup connection" as I thought it has hanged... I cant remember if repartition was selected.. Came from the world of HD2 where things were much easier.....
Now, I cannot boot, cannot go into download mode, 3button trick does not work, cant charge, does not respond to usb jig.. So, it means it simply would not respond to anything that I do.. I asked my friend to charge up the batt for me so its not the batt prob..
Before I send in to the service centre (out of warranty period.. ), would any kind soul here advise if theres anything that I could try to do first...
You may try at first this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310
if this doesn't work you can try this(for me it looks a bit difficult)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19003060#post19003060
And if neither the first nor the second of this two ways will help you'll have to send it to the Repair-Service i think.
installation of roms
have galaxy s. i have rooted it n installed boot recovery. i m having prbl in installing roms it shows error Unable to varrify whole file signature. file signature not varified. wat can b the possible solution
Well the 1st method I have tried b4 but it doesn't do a thing to the phone..
The second is too much for me.. Soldering and stuff are just not my thing.. Tried that in school and ended up damaging the circuit board!! Sounds too much work..
Thanks for the help but I think I will just send it in at a fee.. To play safe..
Thanks again!

I learnt that U have to use the right kernal for the individual roms. If not, this error will pop up.. Each kernal have slightly different recovery..
