boosting antenna reception - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heya all ! I'm a little pissed at my phone , had to wait 5 hours in a line yesterday to get my parking card. My phone had a no signal for the entire time while other students blackberries and iphones had full signal
i have 4 bars on my lg shine and some older phone
i had 1 bar on my g1 and now 2 bars after sanding the antenna ( yes i'm crazy uh )
So anyone know any other trick to boost this wonderful phone antenna reception ?
( I'm using a rogers rooted phone )
thx in advance

Did you update your radio?

"sanding the antenna"
Dude, not sure you can blame the phone here. Good luck, hope you can get it working better.

HELP!!!
Basically I have the same issue. I get like a phantom signal on my phone in my office so I know it works but I would like to increase the phones signal reception so that I can get that signal and keep it. I saw someone mentioned updating the radio how is that possible?(I just got my phone two weeks ago I have read a little on jailbreaking buy haven't tried it because I saw no huge reason to do so.) Also is there any other way, other than updating the radio? (And no I cannot get a repeater in my office). Thank You So Much.

See my sig for the download of the newest radio.
PS: It's called rooting, not jailbreaking.

I'm in the same boat and I have the newest radio. I get 0-1 bars AT HOME. Its rather annoying to get such a poor signal inside my house.

I already have that radio, is there anything else I can do?

You can try the even newer one in the dev section. But I'll wait till HTC/T-Mo has an official update.

HELP! Radio not working anymore.

Hi everyone,
I woke up today and when I looked at my phone there was the X on the signal bars I thought maybe because I was in my basement with little reception. I go up to have breakfast and it did not change... I restart several times it did not work. I also did a nandroid restore of an old install of cyanogen mod, this also did not work. I flashed a bunch of radios and it did not work either...
Can anybody help me or know what is going on?
Thanks!
is the radio turned on? i mean is it NOT in airplane mode?
I feel so stupid now. The problem was my sim card, my service. Mods please lock this thread.

LOL this is the problem if you own a linux based device - u have to do a lot of plumbing work. I find your's funny because yesterday I flashed my phone like so many times before I realized it was my (linux) router that had the wrong rom(w/l driver) which gave me wifi hiccups. I also have a linux satellite receiver. My main aim in life is to live in peace with my linux devices at without having me interfere in their lives and vice-versa. My first linux device experience was the razr - now the domain and forums related to the razr is completely useless like a post-apocalyptic planet, compared to how informative it used to be at one point.

[Issue] New Radio 2.42.01.04.27

I am using the new Sprint radio 2.42.01.04.27 along with Damagecontrol v2.08 ROM and having issues with my battery life especially where I work! I have very poor signal at work and the battery seems to drain faster than it used to with the earlier version of the radio. But where I live I have full signal and the battery seems to hold well!!!
I just want to make sure it is not something I am assuming or if there is something I can do to keep the same radio and improve the batter life???
Anyone else on here experience similar issues please feel free to share.
Thank you!
Edit: I just realized I should have posted in Q&A section, is there a way I can change it?
probably because where you work the signal is low( like you said) and the radio looks for the HOME network, and because it keeps going and going, and switching from ROaming to HOME , this will eat your battery fast.
I have the same problem
I have this problem too. It annoys the crap out of me
I have this same problem. -99 and lower dbm at work. What I do is put it in airplane mode unless I need to make a call. If that's not a viable option, I would suggest getting an extra charger. But I even had this problem when my phone was still stock, so it's not ROM specific.
You could also try differents radio from this page. http://geekfor.me/category/radio/
This has always been an issue for me for just about all of the phones I have owned for the past decade. Low/weak signal causes your phone to constantly try to get a better signal, which in turns eats your battery. Don't think this has anything to do with the radio version whatsoever.

I believe if a Radio increases your signal...that means you get better signal in places where before you could not, which means less roaming right?
just my 2cents
So far none of the 2.1 radios are that great on my hero. I have since gone back to the 1.5 stock radio and all seems really good.

I have the same issue at my house I would recomend that you turn off the mobile network while your at work unless you need it. I keep a toggle on my primary screen for easy on and off. It helps my battery last when I have no need for the mobile data I just turn it off but it still allows you to make and receive calls and will help improve your battery life. Hope that helps you out.
Forgive me for my noobiness. I searched on wikipedia and other places and isn't a lower -dBm better than a higher -dBM?
So -62dBM is better than -100dBm or am I wrong here?
Thanks for not flaming!

Lower is better. I stole this from a non android phone related blog but I'm sure it applies to all phones:
Full Signal:-70 or lower
Optimal Signal:-70 to -75
Fair Signal:-75 to -85
Poor Signal: -85 or higher
The values may not directly reflect the quality referenced but it clearly shows that you want a lower -dbm.

That's correct numbers closer to 0 are better therefore -62 is better than -100
Also for future reference. Every radio will give every person in a different location different signal strength. Duh I know they are obviously on different towers. What I mean is, if i switch radios, one will give me a better strength compared to another. For some the original 1.5 radio worked best, for others (like myself) a 2.1 radio worked better. Its really a trial and error thing. But be careful, flashing radios is the one thing that will brick your phone if not done right.
One question the OP could of asked is.. What radio does someone in "his location" use and get a better signal with?
Dang... I currently have -48dBm... but still not at full bars... At work though, at home I think I get -90dBm and about a bar or none at all...
A "Roam Only" option might help here. Is there such an app for Android 2.1 yet? There was one for Blackberrys and it works a charm in weak signal areas.
(When used, your phone will roam on the Verizon network only. The data is slower when roaming, but the battery draining issue is solved.)

Need Radio Help

Hello,
My name is Brian, I'm a member here obviously.... Had the username BFielding a while back, registered in 2007 if I remember correctly, but can't access or retrieve password for that account, different email now, so now I'm BFielding80...
Heres my problem... I can't get SH!T for help on this site, maybe because it's so overloaded, or maybe some a$$hole said dont help this person.... IDK
All I know is I ask a question and they RARELY get answered.... I'm at the point I'LL ****1N PAY U TO ANSWER MY QUESTION, I'VE BEEN ASKING THE SAME [email protected] QUESTION LONG ENOUGH...
I need radio help. I'm rooted, I run all the ROMs, always Froyo based.... I've never updated my radio from what it came with.... I have radio 32.26.00.24H_4.04.00.03_2
I haven't updated because I don't want to kill my AT&T 3g.... I've read that the TMo Froyo radio will kill my AT&T 3G so thats why I left my radio alone.... But now I'm reading that the newer radios are compatible either way, so I want to upgrade it.
I know I can go back if it does kill my 850/1900, but I would rather someone to just please just recommend me a radio as well as link, I'll adb it myself...
I need a radio for best 3G and battery life would be a plus, but 3G is more important, in my area I drop to edge frequently...
THE PERSON WHO HELPS ME WILL RECEIVE $10 US DOLLARS VIA PAYPAL
Thanks,
Brian
Well, I don't want your money but you should be fine flashing this new radio (32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04). Some people say they get improved battery life and some don't. Most seem to get better reception.

There is where you will get the newest radio image, it is identical to the one found in the Desire 2.2 update. You do not have to update HBOOT if you do not want to, though I could be wrong on that one, though I didn't have to when I did.
If you do not want this version of the radio as some people have trouble with it you can flash the radio that was uploaded by enomther:

Heh, no that is all right. By the way, I kept editing my post a fair bit, sorry.
So there are two 2.2 radios you could flash. The newer one does give you better reception though, I use the 4.06 one though, if you were curious.

The ROM shouldn't affect your reception to my knowledge. You may have different APNs set and that could cause issues but even that is a stretch.
What 5.06 radio? 4.06 or 5.08?

you should not see any major difference between the two radios when it comes to battery life. i've been using 5.08 since it came out, i have a much more stable signal and battery life is the same for me.
you can also downgrade ur radio whenever you want... just flash the old radio through recovery... you'll be ok
Fastboot is, IMO, the most reliable way to flash a radio. I would rather not leave a brickable upgrade/downgrade up to a script, but that's just my paranoia kicking in. lol.

Just installed it over Alien ROM. Download speeds are comparable to .30P, upload speeds are a bit better. One noticeable improvement though is that it takes less time to achieve a data connection when the phone wakes up.

I believe it's because the ATT baseband version has been optimized to work with the ATT towers.
For sweets and giggles I flashed this on my phone running CM7 Pre Beta 4 on AT&T and I am getting .5mbps faster download and upload all around.
*NOTE*
Seeing as how we all live in different areas of the world everyone's results are going to differ tremendously. What works for me might be sweeter for someone else. So this is just a little word to the wise.
I am NOT telling anyone to flash this on their phone. I am simply saying IF you decide to flash it, you'll most likely get way different results than I did.
It's not my fault nor the guy who made this thread if you sweet your sweet up

I haven't done extensive testing but when I first flashed this the reception at home was MUCH improved. Never ran any speed tests to get numbers.
Here at work where signal is quite poor due to radio equipment my signal is also quite a lot better. Speed tests were great from a relatively dead zone in the office too. Awesome!
I'm using a Bell Atrix on the Rogers network.

The temperature's been fine but I haven't been paying a close eye. If it were anything out of the ordinary I'd pick up on it though.
You can flash a different radio if this isn't working out. N_01.11.30P is fantastic as well, but I think this may edge it out. If I'm not mistaken it sounds like the voice quality of calls have improved by quite a bit.

I just flashed this radio after i posted my question. Reception was never an issue for me anyways, so don't know if it has changed. I played HD game for a bit and same result as others, my phone's temp went up to 40 C in less than 10 minutes. I have not seen any radio which can fix this stupid heating problem. With Stock Froyo, never had to worry about temperature issue at all, ever since I have flashed different ROMS and kernels and radios, I haven't found any which is as good as the stock bell froyo.
Voice quality seems clearer and download speed seems a lil higher though.
I just got off the phone with my wife and this call quality has definite, definitely improved.
I talked to her at work in a relative dead zone and the call was quite clear as well. Thanks for sharing this radio!!

Sprint htc one what are the real benefits of the 4.3 firmware ????

I got my new updated firmware that came out with 4.3 flashed on my sprint htc one flashed to straight talk verizon s-off with moonshine. What are the improvements that I"am supposed to see ????
I have had problems with all 4.3 roms and I have tried them all, my call signal most times shows zero bars when its full signal, sometimes it will go full bars but always goes back to none fast and the phone is never moved.
I thought flashing the 4.3 firmware would fix this issue but it did not.
Another thing is I use it on a verizon samsung network extender at home which its the old model the first model they came out with that was call signal only no 3g data were the newer model has 3g, but I notice it does this when I"am not home sometimes also but I have not really watched it while running errands in a good while. When I"am on the network extender when I call out or on a call received my phone will show full bars the whole time.
I think its working ok, but the no bars on my phone is annoying I mean I might as well not even have bars on my phone at all if they are not going to be accurate.
Anyone have any ideas ?

Another thing is I use it on a verizon samsung network extender at home which its the old model the first model they came out with that was call signal only no 3g data were the newer model has 3g, but I notice it does this when I"am not home sometimes also but I have not really watched it while running errands in a good while. When I"am on the network extender when I call out or on a call received my phone will show full bars the whole time.
I think its working ok, but the no bars on my phone is annoying I mean I might as well not even have bars on my phone at all if they are not going to be accurate.
Anyone have any ideas ?

Not convinced you actually know what you're talking about. For one, the firmware version is not 4.3-- that's the ROM software version, which is very distinct from the radio version that came with the 4.3 OTA. 4.3 changed how cell signal is displayed to match the available/in-use data connection as opposed to the 1xRTT voice/text connection. Besides that, if you're using the Sprint HTC One on Verizon, you're not going to get particularly good speeds even with 3G.
If you don't like the behavior, there's probably an XPOSED module or a downgrade to 4.1 to fix that.
I dont know where your getting your info, but there are firmware downloads for people that are rooted and do not receive htc / sprint ota updates for 4.3.
Check out the following and see for yourself...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46123838
Then see either full firmware or Full Firmware w/o hboot, boot, recovery (for s-off users (thx bigdaddy619 for testing!!!)
The phone is capable of running verizon 3g just as well as sprint 3g.
Unless you have a sprint htc one on straight talk verizon like I do then you have no idea of how verizon 3g data works on a sprint htc one and you are providing an uneducated guess, which straight talk verizon 3g data speeds are not any part of this posting.
Perhaps could it be you either work for verizon or sprint and just hope to deter people from flashing their sprint htc one or any other smartphone to straight talk verizon ????
If verizon was not so much of blood sucking company trying to squeeze every penny they can from their post paid subscribers and would compete with sprint and t mobile and even more on the prepaid side where sprint mvno's get lte and t mobile prepaids get lte and even at&t prepaids get lte even straight talk at&t gets lte, but verizon will not compete and allow lte, this will all be verizons undoing, because with sprints infusion of cash from softbank they will be building lte very quickly and when sprint merges with t mobile in the near future then verizon will be strong armed to either compete or be left behind and they will be put down like a dead horse and many people like myself will love to see the day that their greediness and cockiness comes back to haunt them and they will then pay for their arrogance...

You may want to read a little. 4.3 is not the firmware version, but the ROM version. The current firmware is a 1.x release, even still.

The entirety of your complaint is you complaining about "bars" and real signal strength/speeds. The actual data behind the bars are related to both, but you don't seem to have any idea what the bars are. They represent the strength of your data radio if you're connected to data, 1XRTT if you're on a voice call.

That's cute. You can't answer a substantive question so you accuse me of being a shill. Adorable, but wholly irrelevant.

Excuse me the firmware is not called 4.3 its just with the 4.3 update, if would have read that you would have realized that and not tried to be a know it all thinking you know everything which you clearly do not.

That's pretty ironic, all things considered. I've provided some of the information you were looking for (how and why signal bars may be showing as lower than before with the new firmware), but instead you've posted even more links proving you don't know what you're talking about. Neither the touch control or radio firmware version numbers are even near 4.3. Feel free to keep digging your own hole, though.

Your link proves that you don't know how to actually post links on this forum; besides that, you ignore the posts OMJ's made in the radio threads discussing what kinds of firmware are available-- and yes, those are hboot, radio, and touch. Nice try though.
As I explained jack*** its the new firmware that came with the 4.3, you work so hard to be as much of a jack*** as you possibly can be. The links show the downloads for the new firmware. Try not being such an a** you act like your such a know it all, well you can get off the high horse you think your riding and you know what you can do with your attitude, where you can put it...
You've given it a valiant effort Rirere, bravo to you sir.
Mods should probably scrap this now since the op has decided to instigate a flamewar instead of reading the threads he is linking to as "support" for his statements.

This post was not to ask your personal opinions on anything. The guy just set out to set himself as knowing everything and he does not. He could have easily read in to it and taken the high road but instead he chose to try to put down what I was asking. I dont need anyone trying to be high and mighty thinking they are better. He started things he had no right to post to begin with because he never had an intension on helping, only to try to put me down and act like he is a know it all...

I feel like a language barrier is making this worse than it ought to be..
He very clearly explained himself in his first reply to you. It might have started out a bit condescending but he promptly explained why he felt that way.
Your replies to him hint that you don't understand what he has been explaining. Try asking people to elaborate instead of name calling, it helps makes xda a nicer place to visit.

I never said anywhere on here that I dont have good signal I said that my phone just shows that I don't but in all actuality I have full signal strength the phone just does not show it unless there is a call in progress.
Anyone please do not post on this unless you can do so without an attitude and if your post is not about this subject then you should not be posting on this.

OK, here is me still being on topic.
Read his first reply again. He is correct. The signal bars you see do not represent the same thing they used to. If you don't understand what he meant, ask for more information.
If you are on a custom rom, try posting in that rom's thread, especially if signal is not displaying at all.
Hell, just post in that thread anyway since you obviously don't believe the information you've been provided here!
Based on what info you've given, I don't know how much more you'll get from anyone though...

I know for a fact that the problem is software related I dont need anyone to tell me that.
His comments were off topic, he was trying to tell me that there is no firmware update that came out for 4.3 which is wrong. Excuse me for calling it 4.3 firmware when it has its own number I dont need anyone acting like that trying to tell me things that I know are true.
I did post on elegancia rom but they the main guys run the gsm version of htc one and do not do anything on the sprint side some other guys do so the sprint support is not as kept up as the gsm stuff is.
I was only trying to figure out what problems were fixed in the new firmware if there were and fixes in call signal accuracy or anything like that.
I just dont need anyone acting like they know everything trying to tell me I"am wrong.
Almost every 4.3 custom rom for the htc one says they recommend that you upgrade your firmware which that guy was trying to tell me there is no firmware upgrade for 4.3 which there is and I posted the links for it. I dont need anyone trying to tell me something that I"am wrong when I"am not and I proved it.

You are asking us on the sprint HTC one forums about fixes for a rom built for gsm HTC one?
I have no idea how to answer you, try this:

Its not for just gsm, its gsm and sprint, you didnt read what I posted clearly. I said the main guys use gsm they have sprint guys that help out on the sprint support so the sprint support is not as quick to update as they have to contact the sprint guys on the sprint issues. The rom is for gsm and sprint.
